Breaking: Can’t, Shanahan’t, Won’t
And then there were…however many candidates there were before, less one. Mike Shanahan is apparently no longer in the running for the Jets head coaching job, the Daily News reports.
The Jets held internal discussions on the recently-fired Broncos coach. They even tried to send a feeler to gauge his interest, but the organization is moving on. Presumably, Shanahan sent word to the Jets that he isn’t interested.

Shanahan was probably worried that he would have to deal with “anonymous sources” leaking stuff to the NY media every day….
-
lol, well never liked this guys coaching style anyway, now the only serious candidates we have are Spags and Ryan
-
Like I said earlier this could start to get humilating for our organization if this keeps up. Even if they never contacted Cowher or Shanahan they are top coaching canidates that “appear” to have spurred this franchise. What a difference from 8-3!!!
-
Cower put it right, the Jets are dysfunctional, and thats putting it mildly.
A fish stinks from the head down, and this all starts with Woody Johnson and his PSL’s, thats why he brought in Favre, and in doing so he sacrificed long term stability for short term WOW factor. Now it’s blown up in his face and once again we are a joke in the NFL.
I knew bringing in Favre would create a circus atmosphere, and now no established, big name coach will go near us (Cower, Shannahan, Schottemheimer, Holmgren) they will not want to be mired in the Favre soap opera. Our only option for a coach will be some no name coordinator.
This was not Mangini’s fault, he was put in an impossible situation, Woody Johnson (WJ) knew he had an inexperienced HC, one who was just starting to learn how to be a HC. WJ should have known that by insisting on Favre he was basically hamstringing Mangini. There was no way that Mangini could control Favre, and he could definitely not bench him, he could only just sit by and put up with it all. Maybe a coach like Parcells could have handled this situation, but not Mangini, and shame on WJ for putting financial gain ahead of the plan that Tannenbaum and Mangini had laid out.
If we fans had any brains and cojones we would boycott the Jets and not buy the PSL’s, if nothing else then just to let WJ know that we are not that easily bought.
-
I would rather have Ryan than Spags…..I keep hearing that fans didnt like that Mangini was quiet or not emotional on the sidelines (which is stupid) but if they want fire then they should all be pulling for Ryan. Spags is not a loud emtional guy especially if you compare him to Rex…..Plus his dad threw pucjes on the sidelines and put out bounties on players….The apple dosent fall far!!
-
Did Cowher says the Jets were dysfunctional? Did I miss something. When did he say that??
-
I am not crushed that we did not get the guys who chose not to coach here. I am not enamored with most of the other names I have heard so far.
I listed my criteria earlier. I am not sure who would be the right guy but I think guys will be hired later this year and next year who will succeed because they can identify the resources they have, figure out a system that harnesses their team’s strengths and hides its weaknesses, coach their players up, motivate them to play and practice hard, and play the right guys.
Rather than focus on the guys who don’t want to coach here, lets hope Woody and Tannenbaum don’t pay attention to the NY Media or fans and become one of the teams who hires an up and comer who succeeds because they do their homework and figure out who best can do the stuff listed above.
There will be long term assistants and college coaches who succeed at the NFL level. First time coaches and retreads.
We just have to find the right guy.

Good! Don’t like Shanahan at all. He was not what we needed.
-
Not getting Shanahan doesn’t kill me. If it was because he wouldn’t have full control of personnel decisions, his history in the area indicates he shouldn’t have it.
-
What kind of irresponsible owner fires a coach with no fallback plan? Woody, you upset me. Now- the best HC available is… Eric Mangini.
Way to go Woody. Don’t sell me this Spags crap. I like the guy, and he’s clearly a clever DC, but he is just as unproven as any other green HC.
I predict dark times ahead. Consistency wins championships. -
Bent do you just take all the comments and pick and chose the ones you don’t agree with and remove them from the thread?
I said it once and i’ll say it again in response to rambles comments. The only one creating the circus atmosphere is everyone except Brett Favre. (Media fans and players)
-
I am not that thrilled with Shannahan either, and it’s probably best he isn’t coming here, but it’s the perception of the Jets that sucks! As usual we are a joke in the NFL.
-
I posted the same thing on the last post NO VETERAN COACH WILL TOUCH THIS JET FRANCHISE…Now Woody has himself backed into a corner with the decision to bring FAVRE IN,THE PSL’S,and feeling the heat from the players and the fans he’s gotta be [nervous] right now…WOODY AND MIKE T must feel like mice is a COBRA’S cage…They best understand that they set this franchise back several years again from top to bottom with their I CAN BUY A SUPERBOWL mentality…AND the media is turning on them like a two headed snake from last year….AND the worst part about it is really what can they do to reverse the situation…. THEY MADE THEIR BED NOW THEY GOTTA LAY IN IT>>>>>
-
nobody wants to touch this disaster of an organization now. oh the pain! here’s a 1st-time head coach getting lucky!
and no to martyball!
-
Sorry Sammy G I have to strongly disagree.
That pep speech during the Miami game was priceless; “let’s just go out there and whatever happens, happens” and “let’s just play our game, whatever that is” are you kidding me? And if what is being written is true, that Favre isolated himself from the rest of the team is correct, it’s no wonder Green Bay chose not to take him back. We’re gonna regret taking him also, if it’s already not happened.
-
If we thought Mangini and sutton ran a bad defense we would have been in for a show with Shanahanon.
This should be a happy time jets fans he wasn’t we needed at all.
-
AS i posted earlier today on a previous blog here NO VETERAN COACH IS WILLING TO TOUCH THE JETS THIS YEAR…with the FAVRE merry go round, the psl’s,the ny media, and hostile fans why would anyone want to STEP INTO THE HORNETS NEST…Woody and Mike T are now backed into a corner and they have no one to blame but theirselves….THE I CAN BUY A SUPERBOWL and WIN NOW AT ALL COST has beacked fired in the FACES.Now the media has turned on them like a two headed snake, the players are pissed about FAVRE getting all the press and special treatment threwout the year, and availible head coaches are like SCREW U for the way they handled Mangini and the team this year…BETTER BUCKLE up your seat belt because this JET organization is on a crash course to the bottom of the league….
-
ramble what the hell does that have to do with a circus atmosphere. You are totally changing the subject.
Regarding isolating himself. Have you ever thought for a minute that maybe he didn’t get as friendly of a welcome as we may think? What I see from the lockerroom is a lot of jealousy of Favre. A lot of jealousy in the way the coaches treated Favre. We saw evidence that maybe didn’t get the warmest of welcomes. For example comments before the niner game by Coles, and now Jones, Rhodes, and the “mysterious anonymous backstabber”. I’m repeating myself, but if the anonymous source wanted to have dinner with Favre so much, I would like to know if he ever asked Favre to go out for dinner. I doubt it. It is much easier for a team to welcome a player, than one player attempt to blend into a team that resents him because they are jealous, and knew that all the success of the team would get attributed to Favre if they had a good season.
-
What coach cares about PSLs?
-
f shannahan he s@cked the last 8yrs he wants control same goes for coward go get ryan or spags in vthat order calm down everything will be fine
-
Hopefully Favre will be the next one who says he doesnt want to come back to NY, it will make things alot easier and the team will be better off in the short and long run.
Now that the so-called “big names” are off the table, Rex Ryan is the best fit for this team as of right now, a fiery guy, gets the best out of his players, plug Callahan in at OC, let Ryan hire the DC of his choice (he would have a ton of input in anyway and would keep the 3-4), keep Westhoff for ST and let Ratliff and Clemens battle it out for QB. With that scenario the Jets will be better off than they were when the season ended.
-
ramble914;
You are dead on in your comments. Never saw an athlete get a key to NYC and they still think he did not get a friendly welcome. What the hell do they want him to be anoited KING for crying outloud. Ridiculous, just absurd !!! Must be that Farve kool-aide again..
You are right, a boycott is good, although there are enough corporations that will participate in that robbery and he has enough billions that he can wait. I’m trying to get Woodpackers e-mail and a e-mail campaing would be a good place to start.
-
But they didn’t have a good season. All the stuff said about Favre in Greenbay is now being said about him here, but I digress, my real point that I was trying to make in my post above is the incompetence and greed of Woody Johnson and how it got Mangini fired.
-
kd bart The coaches that care about the PSL’s are coaches that want a happy fan base, coaches that see through the smoke on the FAVRE PR to get ticket sales, and coaches that see an owner who is more worried about lining his pocket with gold instead of the overall unity of the team(KISSING FAVRE”S BUTT)….CHAD P. and Magini are both victims of the PR game that WOODY and MIKE T are playing…The only thing Woody and MIKE T didn’t realize is that the MASS MEDIA is a two headed snake waiting to prey on the wounded….
-
lol @ owned bent.
Well I responded to a comment that ramble said, and I saw it post, then it mysteriously got deleted.
Oh well, I reposted so its all good.
-
NY TITAN is %100 correct!!! Way to go Woodrow!!! I honestly thought Woody had his guy already chosen for the job before hand!!!! WATTA JOKE!!! I cant believe that, “A Finacial Genius”, like WJ, would put his entire franchise at risk, by making quick, rash decisions!!! I keep saying it over, and over, the fact is, this team is very close too something special, and we need someone that’s been there, and done that!!! Not some overambitious, unproven, over achieving coordinator!!! And now that Cowher, and Shannahan are evidentally out, The only proven comodity left? Martyball!!! I know, I know, I’m an Idiot!!! But, who’s left? That’s the situation our fearless owner has placed us in, Thanks Woody!!!
GO JETS!!!!!!
-
Coaches care about wins and losses and what it takes to achieve the former and avoid the latter. They’re not worrying about PSLs.
-
Whoops, Sorry!!!
-
I’m not talking about how Favre was welcomed by the city, mayor or anyone except for the team itself. And thats where I think the root of the collapse came from.
Jones, Coles, Anonymous source, Rhodes, and probably a lot of other players that decided to keep disagreements “in house” and not backstab their starting QB in front of the national media.
The resentments and the jealousy of favre is now very obvious.
They wanted to have the spotlight, and they were reduced to secondary players, walking in Favre’s shaddow because of the media’s love affair with Favre.
They couldn’t handle it, and that’s where the collapse began.
-
AND to Woody and MIke I have this comment “WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND” NOW they find themselves on the hot seat…(THE SAME SEAT MAGINI SAT ON ALL YEAR WITH DEALING WITH BRETT) IF i were them(WOODY AND MIKE) I’d fire myself FOR SELLING OUT THE TEAM FOR FAVRE….
-
Mike Holmgren…enough said.
-
but of course that would never work because the Jets fans and probably a lot of players would resent him and be jealous of him because he won a superbowl with the most popular QB outside of the state of new york.
-
Story of my life Bent..always responding to things that aren’t there. lol
-
Bent,Woody and MIke aren’t looking for veteran coaches anymore because they got slapped in the face three times already(PARCEL’s,COWLER,AND SHANAHAN)…They are saying that to “SAVE FACE” TO QOUTE THE OBVIOUS,”ONCE BITTEN TWICE SHY.”
-
good now we can get spags for our coach and our defense would actually blitz more then 3 people and gholston can start instead of thomas
-
Not sure I believe Cimini’s story. He’s been known to cook one up now and again. The word that stands out is “Presumably.” As in, “I’m guessing this is what happened but I have no facts.” Where is the statement of fact in the story?
-
I think they had a harder time dealing with all the Interceptions rather then Favre’s shadow.
-
You know ramble, I can definitely see their frustrations with the INT’s. And maybe Favre might have a problem with the O-line allowing him to get sacked so many times, or WR’s dropping the balls, or the defense sucking it up. I sure had a big problem with all of that.
The only difference is Favre keeps it in house, he didn’t go talking to radio programs and national media. In fact Favre has always been loyal to his teammates in all 17 years he’s been in the nfl. I can’t think of a single time where he called someone out to the national media. I’m sure he would do it in practice or games, but he keeps it in house where it belongs.
-
SWIZZLE 81
i swear, i am going to call woodie johnson and don you the next gm.
this is not a catastrophe jet fans. get rex ryan in here and let him run the show.
since when do you need a franchise qb to win it all or succeed. the league has changed dramatically. the way to win in the nfl is the following:
1; stop the run
2. run the ball
3. DONT TURN THE BALL OVERjoe flaco, tony romo, tavaris jackson,
are these guys overall number one picks?
i don’t care what you tell me, there was no qb worse in the league over the last 5 games than favre. put in ratliff.. give him a chance . create a culture and a system and develop players over time. then you can plug in veterans from free agency.
it’s NOT HARD>
the jets have to stop plugging squares into circles, and develop an IDENITIY.this is all that needs to be done. i don’t give a dam who qb’s or coaches….create a CULTURE!!!
-
Ramble’s right….Favre was talking in the past tense in the week leading up to the Miami game. Whatever happens, happens? Yeah, I’d like that to be everyones attitude if I threw 3 interceptions.
-
Well it’s pretty bad when you’re 9-7 and former HCs won’t even give you the chance to interview them. Each day since the Mangini firing gets worse and worse in my opinion. I just have this feeling we’re gonna hire a bad head coach and blow everything again. We talked to Mike Tice and Joe Vitt last time, can’t wait to see who else we’re stuck interviewing this time. At this point I’m pulling for Spags or Rex Ryan.
-
Except Jevon Walker, he totally called him out in the media for wanting to renegotiate his contract, that was real big of Favre especially when he makes $13 million a season.
-
At this point how are we going to bring a new coach that would be an upgrade from Mangini. The reason for firing a coach is to get an upgrade. Anyone who we bring in at this point would be an inexperienced coach with no head coaching experience. Wow this sounds similar to three years ago.
Im starting to get the feeling that the Jets cant give this job away. And here we are back to square one with no plan in place and the realization that we will have to endure another couple of years with a coach ‘learning” how to lead a football team.
Mangini firing was a big mistake, and it was not his fault.
-
So Shanahan’s out. So what. There are still a couple of winning Super Bowl Coaches out there. We’re not done yet. As long as they do their due diligence.
What amazes me is this- Did they do any season ending exit interviews with the staff & the players? Obviuosly not. Wouldn’t it make sense to do that every year? Doesn’t every well run organization do this? Maybe I’m assuming too much. I would. Anyways, Brian Billick is still out there. I bet we pay better than Coors. And you can tell he has a sense of humor.
Fanhouse REALLY started a fire on the whole TJ story. I’m getting responses to my posts every half hour. I’m jvsiii3. We will get through this. It will take some time.
Man, Bama’s getting pounded in the Sugar Bowl.
-
I’d be more upset if Cowher and Shanahan were saying no thanks to the Jets in order to pursue the jobs in Detroit and St. Louis.. That’s not happening. I don’t think the Jets were too wild about Shanahan anyway and I still think there is a possibility that Cowher could be persuaded. Failing that, I don’t see him going anywhere else this season.
-
Ok good point, but Walker was doing some talking of his own. And notice that Walker’s best season was with the Packers with Favre as QB. After he left it was all down hill from there.
-
Sammy,
The thing I am most upset about is what I feel is the colossal blunder of bringing in Favre. I am not saying he wasn’t a great QB at one time, I just think he is way past his prime and the only thing Woody Johnson cared about was selling PSL’s not about the quality of BF’s play. Favre was the wrong move, especially for a young inexperienced HC. We had a good structure in place, we brought in the right FA and could have probably accomplished more with chad. Thats my complaint.
-
Ramble i agree 100%
-
Hey lets get Mike Ditka, can you imagine Favre playing prima donna with Iron Mike. Whoever becomes coach will need to tell Woody and Tanny one thing, and then do another for the season. I want a coach with backbone, and Mangini lacked it. I can’t believe I defended this douche bag during Spygate. He was a yellow rat. Anybody who defends Mangini is only deluding themselves like with Chad P. We needed a fresh start, now we have one.
-
Well I’m guessing that Woody was basing the decision based on Favre leading the packers to 13-3 last year. And he looked like a genius when they were 8-3 and all of you were talking about a subway superbowl.
-
And then the weels fell off the bus.
-
fell off the bus of the entire team, I agree.
-
Oh definitely the entire team.
-
So the disagreement between us is strictly in regards to favre.
My contention is that Pennington wouldn’t have won more than 9 games. He would have been incapable of winning against Arizona, Tennessee and New England games.
Those games Favre took it to a level that Pennington only dreams of. Unfortunatley it didn’t last the entire season.
-
Sammy
I disagree about Pennington.. He won 11 games this year with a far less talented team then the Jets had.
-
But with a much better defense.
-
its a totally different team with a totally different coach with an easy schedule and half of his games in 80 degree weather with 1 mph winds.
Mangini sucks. Seattle game, where was the field goal attempt, instead he decides to punt?
The coach lost his sense with the rest of the team. This team was easily capable of a 13-14 win season.
-
I’m not sure about that, maybe some other games we lost Chad could have won, Chad had a pretty good year, but who knows. We just can’t trust any more of our seasons to a QB who only has a few good games in him per season.
-
The Dolphins won 5 games where they scored 17 points or less. That comes down to very good defense.
-
you’re summing up his entire career with 5 games? This was clearly the worst 5 games stretch of his career, and he wasn’t 100% either. bla bla bla i know that’s not an excuse, but a lot of us know what he’s capable of, and I’m not convinced that he’s washed up. I still think the 8-3 Favre is still there.
-
Thats kinda my point, by bringing in Favre it put Mangini in over his head, like I said above, maybe only Parcells or Holmgren had the star power to handle Favre and all that came with it. I think it was asking too much of Mangini to handle this, and I blame Woody Johnson.
-
Went back and looked at the stats from the SF and Denver games. I wouldn’t say that Favre was primarily responsible for those two losses. I’d pinned those two mostly on the play calling and the defense. Remember the reverse in the rain and not going for it on 4th and 2 on the SF 37 first series of the game and the defense was awful in both games and never came up with a big stop in either game. Twice in the SF game, the Jets tied the score up and the defense allowed them to march down the field on the next series.
-
And I agree with you that Pennington would have probalby won a couple of the games that the Jets lost like Oakland and Seattle. But no way he wins Tenn and NE
Favre has always had problems with subpar teams. Last year they went 13-3 and 2 or those losses to the pathetic Bears. Other loss to Dallas. You’re going to get BS losses with favre, but you’re also going to get big wins as well.
-
It is a bad sign, if management says, “we will do whatever is necessary to get ______”. You don’t ever put your cards on the table. If you remember, this is the same owner who, at the beginning of the season said, “Mangini’s job is safe, no matter what happens”. I ridiculed that statement, as well.
Who cares if these retread coaches don’t want to be here. Their loss. We have a solid team of good guys. Laverneous can get out of hand but, there are no Plaxico’s or TO’s here.
I am scared to take a coordinator for the head coaching job. Although, they may become good coaches. I want someone who has made the final on-field decisions.
Do they know how to control the clock.
Do they know situational football. When to go or punt.
Do they know both sides of the ball.
Do they know when to kick an extra point or when to go for two. These are things that Herm and Mangini both struggled with.
These are the things you want in a head coach.
Management should put in the time and interview college coaches. I am sure that there are some excellent candidates, if they just do the research.
Get me a HEAD COACH. No time for learning on the job.
-
Even with an 8-3 Favre out there, I would rather have a game manager out there with a ferocious defense. He was still throwing INT’s at an alarming rate. I actually agree with the decision by Mangini kicking the field goal on the first drive of the Seattle game, thats the whole point getting points on the first drive. Its inexcusable for the offense to score the rest of the game.
-
Sammy,
I guess the one thing we can agree on is we are passionate Jet fans. Good chatting with you. Talk to you later.
-
that we are.
Cheers.
-
Harvlis, when is the last time a college coach succeeded in the pro’s, the last one I could remember was Jimmy Johnson, few and far between, if there was another more recent I couldnt remember.
I still think the Jets best choice now is to go for Rex Ryan, based on personnel and getting the best out of the players they have, he would be a solid choice.
-
I have a feeling Spags was the backup plan if they didn’t get Cowher. I wanted Shanahan but if he wanted personnel control I would have said no thanks since that’s what got him fired in Denver. If these coaches take a year off altogether I won’t be upset, but I will be if they take another job this year.
At first I wanted someone experienced but Spags and Ryan are growing on me….
It’s true that they are hotshot coordinators like Mangini but from what I heard Mangini wasn’t a great communicator and had trouble motivating players- I don’t think these two will have that problem.
-
Swizz,
You are right. I did some research and most top pro coaches came from pro coordinator positions.
I guess, what I am worried about is managements’ ability to choose someone who is well versed in controlling a game. After Herm and Eric, I am gun-shy.
-
You can add Al Groh to that list Harvlis, and your concerns are valid, especially with Woody having input. But I think with Spags or Ryan they actually been coordinators for more than a year, and successful ones at that and not just a DC for a year or position cocaches for a couple of years..
-
Well this is not good.
I get the feeling that Spags, might be the front offices #2 guy behind Cowher will turn us down as well. I’m not sure that he can handle the looming pressure of the Jets troubled history & fan base.
If he tunrs us down than we must get Ryan! If Ryan turns us down too, then we are sunk!!!
At that point I say go get Jim Fossel!!
Proven head coach with a trip to the Superbowl in 2000.
This guy has been actively looking for work and he will not turn us away. He wants to coach a team again in a big way. If he is given that “2nd chance” and a “2nd chance” in NY, I’m sure he will do anything possible to stick it to the press, the fan base, and bad PR surrounding him.
Let it be said that I know Fossel is a tool and I do not like him, but at this point why not!
If it doesn’t work then we “Sh– Can” him and try yet again. did get the Giants to the SB in 2000.
-
Not to mention that it wouldn’t cost Woody much money to bring Fossel on board. The money we could save on the head coach we could invest into bringing in an up-and-coming defensive coach. Like a Ryan or Spags.
-
Good lets get Ryan
-
Spags is a great DC but is woody willing to shell out the moneys to revamp this defense again???RYAN is the only rational choice at this point and we have players defensively that he can adjust to fit his scheme…WE need some major help on offense cause i’m not sold on brad smith,l.coles, stuckey,or J.cotch being the answers for a potent offense…BRING in some 6ft3 plus receivers with speed, and good hands and watch the difference it makes with any QB behind the center this year…
-
LOOK at arizona’s offense this year we should use them to role model our next offense I’d take FITZGERALD,BOLDEN,and even BREASTON over any receiver on our current roster right now…I know there all under contracts but just saying some teams know what it takes to build a potent offense correctly….
-
In addition to Ryan’s better fit with the Jets defensive personnel, he is also part of a team winning with a rookie QB so he could bring confidence to a KC or Ratliff. If just hope the FO doesn’t jump the gun and offer the job to Spagnuolo tomorrow. Sunday could present a good showcase for what Ryan’s D can do.
-
Breaking News: Spags, Rex Ryan, both Schottenheimers, Callahan, and Parcells have all taken themselves out of consideration too. Woody Johnson has now offered the head coaching position to Favre, who immediately said he would only take the position if they got a new QB.
-
Brandon, LMAO thats the funniest thing i heard today being caught up in this FAVRE,HEADCOACH,drama all day….Thank u honestly for the laugh I needed that AWESOME POST lolololololololol
-
I would like to think Ryan is our guy now that the FO has cast out Mangini. Not an apples to apples comparison but …..
Pats D under Mangini as DC
2005 = ranked 26thRavens D under Ryan as DC
2006 = ranked 1st
2007 = ranked 6th
2008 = ranked 2ndDoesn’t mean he will be a good HC, but at least the Ravens defense has been consistently good under his watch.
Spags would be my second choice, just not sure what he would want to do regarding any changes to our 3/4 personnel. Would also like to see Jim Schwartz considered, but he runs a 4/3. I would only favor either one of these guys if only minor tweaks would be required, if wholesale changes would be needed, I would rather look elsewhere for someone to run our 3/4 (obviously not Sutton).
-
two words……STEVE SPAGNUOLO
-
Get Marty!! Why is this guy not being considered. He wins games and thus makes the playoffs. Granted he has done poorly in the playoffs, but you have to get there to even perform at all. This guy is a master motivator. He would be a perfect fit for us with this team as it is currently built. Stop with the coordinators!
-
Freeman, the only problem with Marty is his son. Brian has proven that he can make any QB look bad. He would have to be part of the package, therefore, leave Marty for the Browns.

Geez, this organization can’t catch a break…
