Link: Jones Clarifies Favre Comments

ESPN First Take provides further clarification from Thomas Jones on the controversial comments he made in the recent Hot 97 radio interview.  Hit play to hear, or read the comments below:

“I’ve got most respect for Brett,”

“He’s one of the best quarterbacks of all-time. He’s a great teammate, you know, he brought a lot to our team this year.”

“I didn’t go up there [to] participate in Brett Favre questions, so when she asked me the question about interceptions, I answered it, as far as how I felt from the game — the Miami game.”

“[The interview with the radio station] got chopped up.”

“I’m not the type of person that goes out there and just throws people under the bus or make comments about people”

“Either I answer a question honestly, realistically, or I don’t answer it at all.”

“The only thing that I could give my opinion on was the interceptions. And that’s what I did,”

“As far as him coming out of the game, that’s not my call just like if I’m the game and I’m not playing well, and I have two or three fumbles, that’s not my call.”

“I’ll talk to Brett. Everything is cool with me and Brett. He’s a great guy,” Jones said. “We have a lot of fun over there at work. I answered the question. I would expect him to answer the question the same way about me if I had two fumbles and it was a situation where I wasn’t playing well and he answered the question the same way. I wouldn’t look at him any different. I wouldn’t be sensitive to the answer because we all know in this league you have to protect the football to win.”

“Bottom line, we make a lot of money in this league to go out there and make plays and win football games, and as a team everybody has to be accountable,”

“I have a great relationship with Brett.”

“We were driving and we were in position [on Sunday] a couple of times. . . . And it didn’t work out,”

“Nobody’s perfect, trust me. I’m not perfect by any means. Brett Favre’s not perfect by any means.”

“There’s not one person on that team when we win a game. Everybody on that team contributed. The trainers, the practice squad guys, everybody on that team contributed. When we lose a game, everybody’s included. Everybody could always do something better.”

“So of course when things aren’t going the way you want them to go it’s not a personal attack on that player as an individual performance. We get paid a lot of money to make plays.”

UPDATE: Bassett’s Thoughts — This is the more buttoned down version that Jets fans have been accustomed to hearing.  He explained his thoughts better without a DJ screaming at him, which must have been easier to deal with on ESPN than HOT 97.

Hearing just the tone of his voice at points, you can tell that he’s obviously strained about the situation.  Whether he’s upset about having to retract words (did Jones take the onus to set this up or someone else for him?) or is he upset about feeling like he’s become the posterboy for the “Brett must go” talk, I can’t tell.

My dad would always tell me that what comes out of your mouth even if it’s a joke, reflects what’s in your heart, and I believe that.  With that in mind, I’m still more inclined to lend credence to his thoughts from the HOT 97 interview than this more pre-meditated conversation.  He could have said “no comment” to the HOT 97 crew, but he didn’t … he talked about it and I’m glad he did.

On the other hand, I do appreciate the fact that he’s trying to undo some of the shockwaves from the comments and the fact that he’s going into the lion’s den of Favre apologists (ESPN) to do it, is even more bold.

  1. Cowher was right. Dysfunctional.

  2. I agree, this team is dysfunctional.
And for this BS they want us to pay PSL fees???

  3. I also agree, completely dysfunctional.

You can see the jealousy he has just by listening to his own words.

  4. i dont want to see the following people in a jets uniform next year

ellis, thomas, barton, law, e.smith, hodges, coles and favre.

sutton and schotty must go as well.

  5. When did Cowher say the Jets were dysfunctional, just wondering. I thought I heard it all…that’s news to me.

  6. ronnie

Can I add to ur list, with Kenyon Colemon, Brandon Moore( alot of sacks came from him) and maybe BT( maybe…………)

  7. Sounds more like T. Jones. I’m glad he qualified his remarks.

  8. His qualification basically says everything he said on the interview was correct.

-Bottom line, we make a lot of money in this league to go out there and make plays and win football games, and as a team everybody has to be accountable,”

-The only thing that I could give my opinion on was the interceptions. And that’s what I did

i don’t see any change here!!!

  9. IMO – they should seriously consider the following cuts

    Ty Law
    Drew Colemen
    Eric Smith
    Barrett
    Franks
    Favre
    Elam
    Poteat
    K. Coleman
    Baker.

Should draft the future replacements for –

    Ellis
    B. Thomas
    Barton
    Coles

  10. Again…… TJ was just coming off today like a man. He didnt want to make it like he went out of his way to bash Favre. Fact is he said what every Jet player and fan was thinking.

  11. You guys sure are eager to get rid of a lot of solid players. Barton, Ellis, Thomas, and Baker are good football players. Elam has potential and does not make any significant amount of money. There is no reason to cut a guy who seemed to make a lot of big plays for us this year.

  12. Atta boy, TJ ! Way to man-up ! But honestly, you didn’t need to. We all know exactly how you felt in your original quotes, and we all know that the media blew it WAAAAY out of proportion. I hate the NY media too !!

  13. Elam. Poteat, K Coleman and Baker are good enough players especially Elam and Poteat that dont make any money and make plays. Barton is a free agent so I would assume he will be replaced. If a guy like <Marty comes in a lot fo these players will stay. A new guy like Spoagniolo or Ryan it could get bloody in Jersey.

  14. Dysfunctional is putting it mildly.

A fish stinks from the head down, and this all starts with Woody Johnson and his PSL’s, thats why he brought in Favre, and in doing so he sacrificed long term stability for short term WOW factor. Now it’s blown up in his face and once again we are a joke in the NFL.

I knew bringing in Favre would create a circus atmosphere, and now no established, big name coach will go near us (Cower, Shannahan, Schottemheimer, Holmgren) they will not want to be mired in the Favre soap opera. Our only option for a coach will be some no name coordinator.

This was not Mangini’s fault, he was put in an impossible situation, Woody Johnson (WJ) knew he had an inexperienced HC, one who was just starting to learn how to be a HC. WJ should have known that by insisting on Favre he was basically hamstringing Mangini. There was no way that Mangini could control Favre, and he could definitely not bench him, he could only just sit by and put up with it all. Maybe a coach like Parcells could have handled this situation, but not Mangini, and shame on WJ for putting financial gain ahead of the plan that Tannenbaum and Mangini had laid out.

If we fans had any brains and cojones we would boycott the Jets and not buy the PSL’s, if nothing else then just to let WJ know that we are not that easily bought.

  15. Thomas Jones is an unprofessional punk carbaby to say anything about favre to the media. Jones had his best season ever this year with favre at the helm. He has already been on 5 teams in his career ( mostly average at best ) and by the way he ” stands” by his teammates, I’m sure it will be more soon. Favre played with the Packers longer then Jones’ whole career will last. He needs to show some respect for a true legend of the game. Favre has played through injuries his whole career and does not guit on his team because of an injury. It would be a Coache’s decision to pull him in that situation and maybe that why he got fired. Bottom Line Favre is the best quartback to ever play the game. ( Records do the talking ) and Jones will only be remembered as the player that direspected Favre.

  16. The only people that are creating a circus atmosphere is EVERYONE EXCEPT BRETTY FAVRE.

And yes that includes the players, the fans, and the media.

  17. I swear I love Tj he owned Dana Jacobson he is right in everything he said people can talk what they want about how Brett helped his touchdowns go up thats bull its called an offensive line he was a flat out better running back Favre had very little to do with that.

  18. even at 39 there are not many teams that will stack 8 in the box with favre behind center and that does help a running back. favre spent a lot of time on his back considering that 140 million dollar line

  19. 140 million dollar line? That’s not right. Add up the total of all the contracts for the five offensive linemen including even unguaranteed money and you only get to about $115m and that includes the years that have already been paid.

Besides, the line wasn’t really the whole issue. The primary pass protector (Ferguson) gave up three sacks and overall they were much better than the previous year. Part of it was that they went to so many spread formations, whereas many other teams will max protect.

It is true though, when healthy teams cannot stack the box against Favre like they did in the past, although they did to an extent while his arm was clearly bothering him and he was rarely throwing deep.

Sometimes, when they do stack the box, you can break more long runs. I think this is what happened over the second half where the Jets had more runs stuffed, but broke a few long TDs.
