Billick Added and Shanahan Still in the Mix

NFL’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jets have reached out to both Brian Billick and are willing to wait two weeks to talk to Mike Shanahan.

Despite reports that the Jets would not speak with former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, they reached out to his representative Saturday … Shanahan’s attorney [said] … once that two-week window passes, then it’s possible that Shanahan and the Jets will talk. But the Jets reached out Saturday and were put on hold.

  1. it looks more and more like it was a mistake to fire mangini.
if he wouldve failed next year, then we could possible have 4 big coaches to choose from.
    shanahan
    cowher
    homgren
    dungy

but im tired of all this, i want us to have a long term coach.
i want us to have someone like cowher in pitt, fisher in tenn, shanahan in denver, andy reid from philly, belichek from NE, etc.

i thought mangini couldve been the one, but now i want that again.

  2. ronnie … so did i. i think one more year without brett would have answered that question … we’ll never know now.

  3. yha Mike Francessa doesn’t know anything … he just lambasted a caller for saying Billick was a possibility. ‘Ive never heard that.’ What a weirdo and idiot.

  4. Absolute mistake by Woody firing Mangini. He listened to the Joe Beningo’s of the world and now has created a mess for this franchise. The best part is he has Mr T running interviews but big time coaches want nothing to do with him. He can interview 1st time coaches but the Shanahans and Cowher’s of the world will not meet with this guy. I like him but he is clearly not respected as a football guy by experienced coaches with GM capabilites. Get back in the office Woody and get us a proven guy.

  5. I dont want Billick. His offense was a joke in Balt and he was supposed to be a O genius from Minn. Plus the guy is a complete basket case when it comes to the media. We need a badass. Not some sensitive guy with an attitude problem.

Wait for Rex Ryan or a big time coach

  6. Dungy’s probably going to retire.

Holmgren’s wife will make him retire, haha.

Cowher won’t coach with us because Woody’s an idiot for going on vacation while firing his head coach and letting Tannenbaum run the search. I’m a Mets fan, but when the Yankees needed something badly, Cashman left the Winter Meeting this year in Vegas and went out and did whatever he and the organization could do to go out and get Sabathia. Which is what the Jets should have done to go and get Cowher.

But in the mean time. We need someone like Spagnolo or Ryan from Baltimore. Someone who will command our defense to go out there and hit people.

  7. i hope Mangini is signed with the Browns, and his teams knocks us out of the playoffs, ( I know we ain’t playing the Browns next year, but you guys know how it works), So Mike T will get fired next year, for backstabbing his best friend and getting rid of the 2nd best QB in Jets history

  8. WOW after the Miami loss most every JETS fan were calling for MANGNI’s head now all of a sudden because no veteran head coach will come to NEW JERSEY we want MANGINI back…lets talk about BI-POLAR thinking…AND as i have posted the 5 game skid was not MANGINI’s fault totally…BUT you cant have it both ways with a front office with THE WIN NOW AT ALL COST MENTALITY….MANGINI is a great person and 2 of 3 seasons here were good…BUT THE SHELL SHOCKED play calling down the stretch cost him his job…I HOPE MANGINI goes to CLEVELAND and does well but to now go back and change our minds is rediculous…TO LATE NOW TO SAY COULD OF<SHOULD OF<WOULD OF…

  9. As much as I wanted Mangini and the staff gone, the lack of a a plan terrifies me. Several things stick out:
1-There is more to all this than we are told. Somebody (other than Favre) was not happy with Mangini for some time. The Jets don’t operate in a vacuum and are getting feedback from around the league.
2-While the Favre stuff is fun to argue about, there is weird things being said-Shein says the offense was ALL Mangini and Shotty had his hands tied, etc. What is that about? NO discussion of how truly bad the defense was-and it was.
3-Favre or not the locker room wasn’t happy game to game and you could it see each post game.
4-I really do believe we had an under qualified staff and now a purge by the same people who picked them. Clearly they didn’t want another year of “SOMETHING” whatever that is.
5-If we find out there was no plan and we end up with the BC guy or some third rate assistant I think the next 5 years will be awful-can you spell Kotite?
I’d like some answers from people with real knowledge of what actually went on. Then we will all be able to feel better about this mess.
Maybe we need a complete house cleaning and get Woody out of the way.

  10. Brian Billick is the ultimate badass. His teams in Baltimore were as tough as they come. The guy stuck around in one place and won a Super Bowl. People dont like him because his basic attitude is “Im Brian Billick and I know more than you”. Billick is a no nonsense coach who demands productivity. When things arent going right he fires people. You think Drew Coleman would still be on the team after week 2 if Brian Billick was the head coach? Mangini will be a good coach in this league but we need an established guy who can mix our veteran talent with some youth and possible free agent pickups. Mangini will be good though but unfortunately not now and not here. The guy needs to take his lumps first and learn from his mistakes. Billick knows what his team needs to do to WIN. He knew what his defense was in Baltimore and played and coached his team to put them in the best possible position to win the game. That is what coaching is all about. Its hard to have a juggernaut offense when you are in the playoffs every year and drafting late and when Terrell Owens in his prime axes a trade to your franchise. People are underestimating what a scumbag like Billick can do for your team. The guy is a douche but he’ll win you some games with gulie and then tell you about it. Its not right but I kinda like it…

  11. I like that Billick is a scumbag…I really do. That might work in Baltimore but the NY media will eat this guy up. Especially if he dosent win ealry……The problem is he was operating with one of the greatest defenses of our time and once it slipped “a little” his teams suffered. He was unable to generate any offense at all. This after being labeled a offensive genius for his work with the Vikings.

  12. TWO WORDS……….STEVE SPAGNUOLO!

  13. JAS and EDDIE i agree with you guys totally…WE need a coach that is going to be as tough as the NY media and fan base….Which coach that will be BEING HONEST i dont have a clue…BUT WOODY better bring in a guy that is going to say were going to do it my way win or lose and YOU ALL CAN KISS my @ss in the process…GET a coach who will make this team fearless of the media, opposing teams, and change this mentality of playing not lose and TO going for the juggler..WOULD LOVE TO SEE a couple of blowouts this next season….HAVEN”T enjoyed one of those in a while….

  14. GOD I wish BRIAN CASHMAN was our GM!

  15. The QB situation is the most daunting element of the job to prospective coaches. Though I don’t think Mangini should have been terminated at this stage, I have little use for the false narrative that Favre got him fired.

What got Mangini fired is he and Mike Tannenbaum not doing a better job with the QB position leading up to camp this year, which left the door open for the reach for the HOF star on his last legs.

Mangini hoped to begin his Jets reign with his own QB, after seeing Chad miss the majority of the previous year with yet another injury and shoulder surgery. He and Mike T. handpicked KC. If KC doesn’t have the goods, that’s on Mangini and Mike T. If KC has the goods, develops into a solid NFL starter, and might have sooner if he had the playing time, that’s on Mangini.

If Mangini bowed to the pressure to seek more immediate wins in his first year with Chad – who narrowly beat out KC in camp – it blew up in his face in ‘07 when Chad played terribly, apparently due to another injury. Mangini then threw KC in midseason – which almost never leads to success.

I think Mangini is a very smart guy who made some rookie mistakes that he will learn from. I also think that he probably practices what he preaches in terms of personal responsibility and will be a lot less likely to play the blame game than his self-appointed defenders.

  16. kc
OK we get Spags, OK, then what? You want to switch back to the 4-3, come on man Calvin Pace and David Harris don’t seem right for the 4-3, and if Harris can’t adjust than we have to give away Harris for a bad draft pick like Vilma

Don’t get me wrong I like Spags philosophy, ” Rush 100″, but Rex Ryan seems suitable for the Jobs, And Billick is good too, You guys wanted someone that shows emotion, well watch his bear commercials

And what happened to you guys, who were out to burn Mangini’s house down, I mean come on, You didn’t expect this, I did, Mangini is a great coach but also a young one

  17. ii KINDA like/agree with REX….but BILLICK is GARBAGE.

  18. good players will find a “position” to play wether its the 3/4 4/3 46……WHATEVER……..AND produce.

  19. Ronnie, above, makes a very important comment. He wants a long-term coach for the Jets and I agree. I was in favor of keeping Mangini and letting him learn from his mistakes in order to maintain coaching consistency. I agree that on several occasions, it appeared that Mangini did not have the best game plan, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt this season….especially since Favre and all that Favre brings was forced upon Mangini and the Jets.

The Jets need to find that long-term coach. The front office AND the fans need to learn some patience. It’s been 40 years with no results. At this point, I’m willing to sacrifice a few learning curve years if it leads to eventual, consistent success. Perhaps Mangini will learn from his mistakes and bring success to his next team.

One final thought, Mortenson just stated on ESPN that Billick is not in the running for the Jets job. Though I know we take what Mort says with a grain of salt, it just goes to show that nobody knows what’s going on with the Jets right now until candidates like Ryan and Spags are finished for the season and able to negotiate.

  20. TO PROVE my point look at TOM COUGHLIN in NEW YORK…When he got hired there was alot of mumble”N and GRUMBLE’n but look what he has done for THE GIANT FRANCHISE….

  21. Having said that, I think Rex Ryan is the best candidate out there, not only because of his expertise in the 3-4 D, but because his team has been winning with a rookie QB. I think he won’t be afraid to start a young, unproven talent and trust the D and running game to give KC, Ratliff, a kid currently on someone else’s roster or a draft pick or whomever time to develop.

  22. Would you have a said that last winter when he took a pass on Santana and decided to go with the young pitchers?

  23. kd bart..

Cashman got Sabathia withour giving up young players unlike the Mets. I actaully think Hughes is going to bonce back and have a nice year so unlike some Yankee fans I was happy to let Santana walk and hope the young guys pitched well.

  24. WISH WOODY COULD CALL JIM JOHNSON IN PHILLY HE WOULD BE AN AWESOME COACH HERE ANYONE KNOW HOW MANY YEARS HE HAS LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT IN PHILLY????

  25. nyckage -

You want the Browns to knock us out of the playoffs next year because you’re sad for Mangini? Go root for another team then, you flake. I like Mangini, but I will never root for someone else to knock my team out of the playoffs. That’s disgraceful. Secondly, Woody was behind the trade for Favre. He wanted to sell PSL’s. There’s no way it was Tannenbaum’s idea. Stop with the misguided anger. Direct it at people who deserve it, like Woody and Favre.

  26. PLEASE NO BILLICK!

He was suppose to be an offensive guru and he NEVER had an effective offense with the Ravens…NEVER!

    Rex Ryan for HC!

I would accept Shanahan if his responsibilities are COACHING ONLY!

His personnel decisions have SUCKED in Denver!

  27. kd bart…..ABSOLUTELY I would have.

  28. ryan, spags or shanahan…NO BILLICK..PLEASE trust me on this one guys..we dont want bilick,

  29. JOE S. SHANAHAN’s personnel decisions have sucked…1000-1500 yard running backs for how many years????Quarter backs that can be rated as one’s of the best in the league most seasons?OFFENSES that can score on every defense in the league….SHANAHAN with the right defensive co-ordinater would be awesome here in NY NO BONES to pick by me if he lands here in NY…JUST get him a good defensive coordinator who will make all the decisions on building the deffense appropriately….

  30. and yes, of course….shanahan ONLY if hes is NOT the GM, only the coach

  31. just for the record I felt MANGINI was let go PREMATURELY….but it HAPPENED and theres nothing I/WE can do about it………….TWO WORDS,STEVE SPAGNUOLO!

  32. Eddie DiGio

Billick was handed that Defense… he did NOT build it!

Get your FACT straight if you’re going to post!

BILLICK was suppose to be an offensive guru and he NEVER had an effective offense with the Ravens…NEVER!

  33. GANGGREEN,

    SHANAHAN is a Great Coach!

I think from his 2000 to 2005 draft NOT one player is still on the roster… NOT one!

I only want him if he COACHes… No other responsibilities!

  34. Joe B

I wasn’t really serious the about the Brown thing, only and idiot would assume I was serious, and yes it was Mike’s fault, he got the deal done, woody doesn’t know crap about football, what does he know? but Mike he pulled the trigger, and he couldn”t defend his best friend, I’m sure if he tried hard enough he could have kept Mangini, and look at the guys he got, Faneca and Woody, who are both old and let up at the end of the season, he got alot of old guys that can’t even go through the whole season, and Jenkins ran out of gas at the end of the season too, I will commend him Pace though

Woody is a puppet, he doesn’t know crap about football, and I expect him to sell this team in the next 10 yrs

  35. I am in agreenent with all of Joe S points today. Billick has no business being a coach here. I have stated the obvious reasons mulitple times already

  36. JOE S. How many players in the league (ON AVERAGE) with the free agency money being thrown around the league stay on any teams roster for 5 to 10 years…LOOK around the league NOT MANY….

  37. Just noticed Lorenzo Neal for the Ravens is so big he almlost dosent fit in his pads and jersey. The guy has got to cut done on the heavy reps. He ever hear of core training….Jesus He’s big

  38. Chad and Dolphins score 1st… 3 – 0

    Ha… HA… HA HA HA

  39. I love Chad but i dont think he can handle this defense for the whole game

  40. JOE S. just did a google search the average draftee stays on his team 3YRS damn thats seems awefully low to me……

  41. Sources: Pats to franchise Cassel. Love the Pats tying up 29 million at QB when their aging D is going to need help.

  42. The only relevent win that the Dolphins had all year was against the Patriots, and Pennington had 0 TD’s

Jello Puddington is going down today.

  43. LOL

  44. subwayfare, the only way the Pats are tying up $29 mill is if Brady isn’t ready for the regular season. Otherwise they’ll trade Cassel for draft picks to one of the 20 teams that could use a starting QB. And if they keep him, they’ll make a decision at the end of ‘09 on who stays and who goes.

  45. Agreed. Early rumors are that Brady won’t be ready and they’ll likely have to carry both through the ‘09 season.

  46. Rex Ryan: 1 Wildcat: 0

  47. What happens if Favre walks away? Will Cowher come back in the picture? If I can’t have “The Chin” then we wants Spags.

  48. Subwaye NE is going to trade CASSEL no doubt about it they just franchised him to get top dollar and draft picks for him Billy B ain’t no fool and who ever goes after CASSEL will have to sell their sole to get em….

  49. Doubt they’ll trade Cassel before they’re absolutely sure Brady’s injury is healed. End of ‘09.

  50. a quick question if BRADY is put on the IR before the season does NE save any cap money??

  51. ok guys stop treating Mangini like he was the next belichik. He sucked. Period. He took a team with 7 pro bowlers and were LUCKY to be 9-7. We need a bad ass coach and Rex Ryan is gonna be a great coach

  52. ben

I agree with you, but Mangini wasn’t gonna be a great coach, but he would have made the playoffs, without Favre , he would not have lost 4 west coach games with CP, Mangini is a good coach, but Favre messed that up

  53. LOL @ PENNINGTON INT!

  54. GANGGREEN-

My understanding is that IR’d players’ salaries count in full against the cap. But Bent is the authority.

  55. nyckage

I agree favre was a huge problem but this team was badly outcoached throughout the year and they had no emotion. They were horrible against the freakin chiefs! Unacceptable. Look at the passion of the ravens defense and there is no doubt we must get Ryan.

  56. Manaini will someday make a good ch. He is smart enough to learn from his mistakes. I just hope outrFO is smart enough to learn from theirs!!!!

  57. nyckage -

I never said Woody knows anything about football. If you’d actually read what I wrote, I said that it was Woody’s IDEA to go after Favre because he wanted to sell PSL’s. Obviously Tannenbaum hammered out the trade, but I can almost guarantee that Woody pushed him to do it.

  58. I doubt it Hangar, Mangini got what he deserved.

  59. LOL @ PENNINGTON INT PART 2

  60. Pennington against a defense like Baltimore is why I thought the Favre trade was a good one. Pennington cannot beat this type of defense.

  61. I hope Woody is watching this game.

  62. I would hope Rex can take some of these players with him. This defensee is just scary

  63. Whomever is the next coach is, I want an aggressive defense. Although, they do get burned at times, aggressive defenses make QBs uncomfortable in the pocket and force mistakes. Sutton’s brand of defense waits for one to fall in your lap.

  64. ben,

I agree with you on getting ryan, no doudt, but we would be watching the playoffs right now with the Jets vs. the Ravens if CP was here, Favre Makes a huge difference in a coaching plan, so Mangini isn’t that bad, and that KC game, our Fav guy made us look so bad out there, he threw like 3 or 2 int

  65. just to confirm, the pats cannot get cap relief by putting Brady on Ir as sub said, not that I’d expect them to because that would rule him out for the whole year.

  66. Chad is not getting any help!

    Those recevers SUCK!

Rex Ryan’s defense is taking away the TE’s… Chad’s favorite targets. Plus… the running game is not working against this defence.

But… Flacco is a rookie QB. Unless the score gets out of hand the Dolphins can still win!

  67. Joe B

OK point is Mike T screwed up big time with Favre and Mangini, yes Woody pressured him to do both, but I mean come on, he followed orders like a soldier to the end, at some point he needs to stop acting like Woddy’s personal B*t*h out there, and make his own damn decisions out htere

  68. Two down lineman, a LB rushing right in front of the NT at the snap nearly gets a sack and busts up the play.

    Get Rex!

  69. Where’s Joe S??? ChadsMagic, as he so proudly put it yesterday, is fading fast!!!! After the Dolphins get stomped out by Baltimore, I dont want too hear Chad’s name again!!!!

  70. drew

I agree 100 percent pennington cannot win these type of games which is why he’ll never lead a team to a superbowl. Keep in mind with pennington we would not have won the new England game. Favre didn’t work out at the end but chad would have been worse.

And btw can someone please start a bring Ryan to ny web site please

  71. To beat this defense you need to spread them out by going 4 wide. The Dolphins don’t have 4 recevers!

  72. Drew,

So true. Give Chad time and he’ll dink and dunk you to death. Put pressure on him and he doesn’t have the arm to make the necessary throws.

  73. {Where’s Joe S??? ChadsMagic}

The game is not over yet!

  74. It’s not Chad dumb, dumb!!!! It’s Baltimore, & there Unstoppable Defense!!!! Boo-Hoo-Hoo, I wish Chad was here!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!

  75. They could put Brady on pup to conserve a roster space until week six at the latest but there is no cap relief for that either

  76. Wow!!! Are you sure you’re not a Miami Fan??? Sure sounds that way 2 me!!!!

  77. Why do Mike T. and Mangini get a pass for not having done a better job with the QB position leaving the door open for the Favre reach?

If KC is a bust, that’s on them. If he’s a player they should have traded Chad and played him.

  78. You keep believing the game is not over!!! I say, it was over before it started!!!! Chad is “not”, I repeat, “NOT”, an elite QB in this league!!!! He’s good, but not great!!!! Thats the truth, but you have him as the Messiah!!! UBSURD!!!

  79. Meanwhile, the NFL Network is showing “The Top 10 Alltime NFL Coaches who Belonged in College”. Just turned it on. #4 was Bud Wilkinson. Three more to go.

  80. THIS BALTIMORE DEFENSE IS SCARY!!!

i dont think anybody on the jets defense would start on the baltimore defense.

The only question is revis at CB.

  81. If you notice Chad is taking 3 step drops and has no time to throw. Plus Miami’s recevers SUCK!

It is amazing what he did all year with this team!

    You people are just blind!

  82. They won 5 games in which they scored 17 or less points. That’s the sign of a great defense. If they depended on Chad to lead them to 24 points a game in order to win, they never would’ve came near 11 wins.

  83. Pick 6, that’s why we upgraded to Favre. I hope we get Ryan or Dungy. I will also go on the record by saying I will never say I want mangini back. I am glad he is gone. I am glad Chad is gone as well. I hope LC is next.

  84. Yesteday you had Miami winning with ease!!!! Now you say Its amazing what he did all year, and they have no weapons!!!! YOU’RE THE BLIND CHILD HERE, BRO!!!! Just say it!!!! I want too marry Chad!!!! Thats pick #3, dumb, dumb!!!

  85. Rex Ryan D: 3 Chad Pennington: 0

  86. HEY THOMAS JONES, IS IT TIME TO BENCH PENNINGTON?

  87. joe s

Yeah were so blind we can’t see the 3 interceptions chad has thrown. He’s terrible!!

  88. i see chad is back to his old ways 3 picks chad will never get you far in the playoffs with that water pistol arm go ravens ,from a die hard jet fan

  89. Heres a thought, why would Spags leave the best team in the nfl, the defending superbowl champs, the best D in the NFL, to go to the biggest joke of a franchise since the Montreal Expos, look the jets will end up giving the job to the only person dumb enough to take it, Brian Shottenheimer, who will fail just like mangini. Untill the jets learn how to draft, they will never win

  90. Dungy will never coach the jets hahahaha,

  91. So it’s all the wr’s fault!!!! Wah, Wah, Wah, Boo-friiggin-Hoo, cry me a river!!!! You then go on too say the Baltinore D is good, and thats why “CHADMAGIC”, CANT GET IT DONE??? Um, isi’nt that called football??? You should have considered Baltimore’s D, when making your assinine predictions!!!!

  92. LOL @ Joe S.

  93. Dear Joe S,

    ITS FRIGGIN OVER!!!!!

    THE END!!!!

  94. Chad down 20 – 3… I see another pic 6 coming in the next 2 drives. Chad is at the mercy of this defense now. He might even get hurt. Rex will be sending the wolves.

Lets give Chad a little respect though. Almost everyone had him for dead in the summer (me included) but he did have a nice year. He is also in the playoffs while were sitting here looking fior another HC.

  95. I respected Chad as a player and leader while here on the Jets. Still do. But this is why he was let go. This team won with ’smoke and mirrors’, just like Mangini’s first year. We had to go a different direction.

And not to bash CP, but did he really get 4 votes for MVP??? Give me a break. He was a factor for the Fins to go 11-5, but let’s not call him the savior. Adrian Peterson vs Chad Pennington….hmmm….who would you rather have??

  96. ouch….chad 3 picks =) where r the chad lovers???

  97. I agree the Favre move was worth the risk to win games that Chad couldnt. In the end we fired our coach and favre played poorly

  98. Joe S

Are we still under the delusion that “THE CHADMAGIC”, will deliver the Dolphins too victory, and we’ll all be sorry for letting him go, and Miami will be a powerhouse for years because of it??? I’m just curios if like 90% of the other Mindless people on this site, you’ll suddenly flip-flop your position!!! Please Respond!!!

  99. if the jets management doesnt open their eyes and take into consideration how rex ryan is basically beating the dolphins all by himself today, i dont know what will work……give the man the damn job and stop the senseless interviews!

  100. Wow, a stellar performance by Chad so far. If this game is any indication, please give the HC job to Rex Ryan.

  101. ridinmywave

ALL BY HIMSELF??? WOW!!!! Rex Ryan is’nt wearing a uniform, you know that, rite??? He does have guys like Lewis, Suggs, Reed, etc.!!! THAT MIGHT HELP, AYE???

  102. How can you guys be sitting here watching the ravens game and not be threatening mutiny if we don’t ger Rex Ryan look what this defense is doing…

    Wildcat Who???

  103. Check my post at 2:58….I saw that coming!!!

  104. Not to continue to pile on, but that’s Chad ‘dinking & dunking’ his way down the field. Unfortunately, the field gets smaller at the goalline (even though he’s done well in the redzone).

  105. Chad will throw another before this game is over. He is no match for this defense or our future HC. I am not jumping on the bandwagon either. I have been calling this for a week now

  106. gOOD CALL dREW, BUT STOP TOOTING YOUR OWN HORN!!!

  107. Haha yep he just threw his FOURTH pick

  108. Whooooops!!!

  109. In saying that…as much as I like K Rhodes…..Ed Reed makes him look like a scrub…Oh by the way we could have drafted Reed instead of B Thomas. I remember thinking hey we can get that saftey from Miami and then we took some kid out of UAB!!! Hilarious

  110. I know Kerry Rhodes would vote for Rex Ryan as HC.

  111. Learn how to draft? Three of the Jets’ Pro Bowlers this season were drafted in the last three years, and at least three more have immediate Pro Bowl potential (Brick, Keller, Harris). Not sure what else you want from their drafts, but from a guy named “JetsSuck,” I wouldn’t expect you to have any idea what you’re talking about. Another pathetic hit-and-run troll.

Also LOL @ Joe S. The Chad cheerleaders are mysteriously absent all of a sudden.

  112. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3809499

At least Cowher won’t be the coach of ANYONE next year either. Still this is why they should have waited a year to fire Mangini so they could get Shanny/Cowher/Holmgren

  113. largebarge……Sorry for the tooting…..lol

  114. Joe S. My problem is not that you aren’t a Favre fan, but that you think Pennington is great and you’re debating the merits of a personnel decision that ALREADY HAPPENED!

The ’should we get Favre and cut Chad’ thing, you know, already happened.

  115. Rhodes may not be Ed Reed but Ryan would put him in positions to use his skills a lot better than Sutton/Mangini.

  116. Joe B, Agree completely. We have to admit at how well the management has done with the draft.

  117. subwayfare??

Not to defend Mangini but Rhodes had great years in 2007 and 2006. He should have made the Probowl.

  118. Where did Joe S go??? I guess he could’nt take the heat anymore!!!! A little piece of advice, If you’re gonna make stupid predictions, and you’re proven wrong, don’t run away, just admit you’re a MORON!!!! We al make Idiots out of ourselves sometimes, just be man enough too admit it!!!

  119. The Newark Star-Ledger reports that offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has emerged as the favorite to be the Jets’ next head coach.
Schottenheimer, who interviewed Thursday, has apparently passed Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo atop owner Woody Johnson’s wish list. Spagnuolo interviewed Saturday and reportedly “wasn’t as prepared as one would think”. A Schottenheimer hiring would not impress a testy fan base or attract PSL buyers for the Jets’ new Meadowlands Stadium, which will open in 2010. Jan. 4 – 3:01 pm et

  120. {joe s

    Yeah were so blind we can’t see the 3 interceptions chad has thrown. He’s terrible!!}

Favre throws 22 INT’s and 3 against the Dolphins and 9 in the last 5 games and you want to anoint him King and kiss his ass!

The game is not over yet!

  121. Drew-

And he regressed badly this year and was clearly unhappy with the way he was being used. Ryan believes in pressure up front and his FS freelancing for picks.

  122. Hey-wheres Fonzie? probably on the bus to chads HOF induction.

  123. Prediction??? Joe S, will be chiming in soon!!!

  124. Read the same thing dbrick….This could become a nightmare if B Schott is running the show

  125. largebarge dont get your panties in a bundle….i didnt mean it literally…..lewis hasnt done anything today, suggs has applied pressure, and yes, reed is argueably the best safety of all time..or will be. but all those blitzing schemes are from good coaching, and putting the players in the best postion which would be most effective, rex ryan has been doin this for a while now…and longer and more effective than spags i might add……….

  126. agreed– i dk what the hell the jets are thinking, but i hope the ledger is wrong here

  127. look at the ravens rankings, their top 3 in in the NFL in run AND pass defense…some one tell tanni and clueless woody to turn the game on, and catch a hint, and stop with the dumb shannahan and billick inquries.

  128. WHAT THE BLOODY HELL HAS BRIAN SCHOTTENHEIMER EVER DONE TO DESERVE A HEAD COACHING POSITION AT ANY LEVEL???

I swear, if Woody hires that douche, I’m revolting.

  129. or someone write a damn letter to the jets fron office, lol

  130. ridinmywave

Don’t get me wrong, I like Ryan 4 the job, but past success is no guarantee for future success!!! Would’nt you agree???

  131. Shotty call those last 3 plays?

  132. I would also favor B Schott… Spagnuolo will flop as HC!

Rex Ryan is my favorate for HC

I would accept Shanahan if he coaches ONLY! I don’t think he wants to come to NY!

  133. I could see Schottenheimer as a cheap, probationary placeholder while waiting for the Cowhers and Holmgrens, who have stated a desire to sit ‘09 out.

I’d rather hire Ryan this year. The problem is the deeper the Ravens go in the playoffs the longer the FO will have to wait and patience isn’t their strong point.

  134. ill smack woody myself if he were to hire schotty, its hard to be a fan when the front office is clueless and unorganized

  135. large,

thats true, but considering whats out there….whio’s the best option?

  136. Hey Chad lovers, I have a question. When’s the last time Favre had 4 picks in a game? I’ll give you a clue: It wasn’t this season. Or last season. Or the season before. Oh yeah, it was back in 2005, the same year Pennington led the Jets to an impressive 1-2 record before getting injured AGAIN and wasting yet ANOTHER year for jet fans. Get over him, he’s a fragile bum and will never sniff a superbowl.

  137. I know everyone shudders at the thought of Schotty coaching but would it really be THAT bad? Sure I’d rather have Spags or Ryan but Schotty did almost get a job last year and you don’t know how much Favre coming here screwed up his plans on offense. They still scored over 400 points this year with his playcalling. And maybe he’ll make Callahan O-coordinator so they can have a power running game as the focus of the offense.

  138. The Jets would be lucky to have Spags. Seriously. It’s the right move, but that’s exactly why I don’t see the Jets making it.

  139. if the jets hire b schott it’s almost certainly to get through the year till cowher is available which is a pathetic move. Rex Ryan!

  140. ridinmywave

I agree, Ryan’s rite up there, but if what I read about Cowher is true, Woody is a DOPE!!! If theres even a glimmer we could still lure Cowher, I want him!!!! Rex Ryan, would be my #2 choice, at this point!!!

  141. I can imagine absolutely nothing, save a move to a different city, that would make me no longer a Jets fan. Brian Schottenheimer being the head coach is pushing it, though.

  142. Joe S

    IS IT OVER YET???

  143. I tried moving to a different city, several times. Didn’t help, still a Jets fan.

  144. barge,

i totally agree, cowher was definately my first choice and rex ryan was my immediate second….but woody was too busy sipping latae’s in france, then meeting with cowher so now its on to plan B….if there is one…..

    but 911 natsfan,

what makes you think spags is a better choice than ryan? not to knock your opinion, but ryan has been doing it for longer than spags, more effectively than spags, and with a defense similar to ours with the 3-4. the ravens defense is in the top 3 in both pass and rush. i like spags too but, just weighing the pros and cons……

  145. Eirias -

    My feelings exactly.

  146. I meant the Jets moving, but you probably already knew that.

  147. It’s over now!

Does NOT change my opinion that the Jets would have won 12 games with Chad at QB behing our OL & running game and we would be sitting here with a BUY this weekend!

You Favre lovers have to admit that he was a complete FLOP with the Jets and he alone got Mangini Fired!

  148. Whats worse is i have heard that B-Schott;s interview went well and Spags went just okay from a couple of sources. Ijust wouldnt understand what the attraction is to B-Schott. I also have a hard time believing this team will respond to a guy like him after the Mangini mess…..We need a beast

  149. i swear the jets front office is trying to draw the fans away, i see NO logic in hiring schott, yeah we scored 400 points last year….so that means we are not addressing any needs, if he did decent as an OC, then let him continue to do so and develope, we would benefit NOTHING from him being HC, isnt that the purpose of finding a replacement of your last HC?…….or do we change coaches like clothes because its fun?? i dont get it

  150. I love how Nance and Simms are gushing over the Ravens and Flacco….Not fornothing but they were favored to win this game.

By the way does Frank Walker get a late hit penalty every game?

  151. ridinmywave

I agree %1000!!! But, is Cowher truly out of consideration??? I just can’t believe Woody would let it end the wat it supposedly ended!!! THATS NOT “DUE DILLEGENCE”!!!

  152. I am NOW Convinced that Rex Ryan should be hired as HC of the Jets!

    Defense wins playoff games!

He can take the 3 – 4 personnel we have with a couple of new blood young players and turn it into a shut down defense!

Woody and Tanny Hire Rex Ryan!

    Favre retire!

Ratliff is our Tom Brady…. Give him a chance to win the starrting QB job!

  153. UHHH JOE S

    IS IT OVER YET???

    Sincerely, largebarge

  154. I am hoping this Cowher thing was a smoke screen. If not Woody’s and idiot for letting a inexperienced GM handle interviews with veteren established coaching candidates like Shanahan and Cowher while he is out of the country….If I was them I wouldnt meet with Mr T either. They know more than he does.

  155. Joe S

ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME??? RATLIFF IS OUR TOM BRADY??? YOU ARE A BAFOON, PLEASE KEEP YOUR MORONIC THOUGHTS INSIDE THAT MELON, YOU CALL A BRAIN!!!!

  156. I agree….You had me until you said Ratliff is our Brady….lol

  157. Is anyone really surprised of Chad’s dreadful performance today?

  158. Anyone else think Joe S.’s comments and syntax seem awfully familiar?

  159. Drew

Exactamundo!!! If its true though, and it happened just like it was written, I’ll be more than irate!!! BASS ACKWARDS!!!

  160. Please stop talking abou Cowher, he is not interested and not worth it. If the Jets are serious about competing next year, they must hire REX RYAN, but if the story is true that Schotty is the frontrunner than we are all doomed.

  161. did anyone see CBS focus on Rex Ryans whole body. He must be 6′6 400 lbs LOL. That’s what we need!

  162. It looks like we might have to wait a while for Rex. i think they beat the overrated Titans next week.

  163. Joe S., come on now. Ratliff looked great in PRESEASON against 3rd string defenses, you’ve anointed him to Tom Brady’s level?

BTW, the Fins fans just found out why those of us that were ready to move on from Chad weren’t crying when he left. Same old Chad.

  164. Good performance by Chad today. Maybe this will remind everybody how he stunk last year and had 17 TD’s and 16 INT’s the year before. Maybe he can lecture the Miami media about how priveleged they are to cover him. When he gets knocked out for the year, early next year, he’ll be the favorite to win Comeback player in 2010.

  165. Hey NE did not know what thay had in Tom Brady… a 6th round draft pick!

How do you know what Ratliff is unless you give him a chance to win the Job.

He impressed me with his accuracy in Pre-Season!

Favre is Done… Put a fork in him!

  166. I agree Drew, I see Balt. beating Tenn. next week. I think Ryan is well worth the wait.

  167. you think ryan will work wonders with our defense.

the baltimore ravens have a better player at every position on defense against the jets.

  168. swizzle 81

You just want too forget about the perfect, proven, Guy for the job, for an unproven coordinator??? I’m not saying I would’nt want Ryan, but too just discard Cowher so easily is not, “:DUE DILLEGENCE”!!! But what am I saying, ITS THE JETS!!!! Once Again, BASS ACKWARDS!!!

  169. f coward and shahand they want all the power mikes done a good job so far these guys are head coaches and thats it

  170. Call me crazy, but I agree with with Joe S., to a degree, give Ratty a chance, all the Jets need is a game manager, much like Flacco was today. They do not need a QB, who gets confused and throws to other team constantly or one with a wet noodled arm.

  171. Cowher is buy no means perfect, his game management skills are on the level of Herm and he was in a “system” in Pitt. They had structure from the top down, that is why there has been no drop off with Tomlin.

  172. Cowher said ” I am not coaching in 2009″!

Stop talking about him. He doesn’t want to coach in 2009.

and you can read into that… that he doesn’t want to coach in NY!

He is afraid of the pressure of coaching in this market!

  173. Shotty is the frontrunner of those who have interviewed. Thats 3 guys. Callahan, Spag and him. Lets wait until the other interview first, people. I believe they’ve asked for and received permission to talk to Ryan but have to wait until his season is over. They still have interview minority candidates which will probably be Rivera and Frazier when their seasons are over. They can’t and are not naming a coach tomorrow.

  174. in the beginning of the season we said if the farve trade didnt work out we would still be in the same boat because chad would still be here w/ no end in sight now hes gone brett is gone so we can start looking for a qb the only diff. right now is the coach is gone but that might be a good thing lets go get rex

  175. As I stated twice during the week, today we saw the other side of Pennington we know. He is a great guy and can play very efficiently against lesser teams, but when he has to go against a good defense he has trouble. I’m sure we will not hear from Hank and Nicholas for a while. What will their excuses be for this? Chad is healthy and throwing with more velocity than he has in years. But the results are still the same. The Jets needed to move on from him, and I’m glad they did. Now let’s get a coach in here that knows how to lead men. I said when Mangini was fired that Billick was on my list. Glad to see they are considering him.

  176. joe the pain,

Jenkins is on the same level as Ngata, Revis is better than any of Balt. corners. Harris is about the same player as Bart Scott. To say the Jets defense doesnt have talent, or Ryan cannot do anything with them is stupid. I guarantee if he becomes HC the Jets will have a top 10 defense next year, and a top 5 the following.

  177. Billick is a loser!

An offensive Guru that never built an offense with the Ravens!

    Inherited the Ravens defense!

  178. Just saw that the Jets may interview Russ Grimm. I like that.

  179. Joe S

Just like Favre last February, and Parcells a few years back??? These guys don’t know what they want!!! He said he was intrigued by the opening, but felt snubbed by the FO!!! The truth is $$$$, and Power talk, and “YOUR PREDICTIONS” walk!!!

  180. Good points Pete57, this year may have been a blessing in disguise, we get rid of Favre(hopefully) and Chad, solid mid round pick, address the areas we need help in, which Tanny excelled in doing last year, let Ratty and KC battle it out for QB, could be a surprise next year. But all big ifs, lets see how the coaching search plays out.

  181. Joe S

Until you admit you’re a blowhard bafoon, nobody cares what you have too say!!! What happened too us all being sorry about “CHADMAGIC”??? An expaination is in order!!!

  182. Swizzle, I’m with you. I didn’ think the Jets were winning the SB this year. We learned that Mangini isn’t ready. Our team has alot of talent that a good coach could come in and get us to the playoffs. So, I like what Tannenbaum and Woody are doing. They are very decisive and act quickly. With a good coach we will be a very good team next year.

  183. Jay Glazer just mentioned Ron Meeks will be interview for the HC job this week.

  184. Chad had that Magic all season on that bad Miami Offense!

Look what he did to the Jets last week.

largebarge if you can’t see that… I can’t help you.

Today’s game Just proves that Rex Ryan should be the next HC of the NY Jets!

I no longer bet on football because I can’t pick any one game.

So that explains my prediction on this game.

Before the Favre thing ever materialized I predicted that Chad would win the starting NY QB job and win 10 to 12 games.

In see what he did with this bad Miami offense this season… Chad would have won 12 games with this Jet offense and we would have a BUY this weekend!

    If you can’t see that… I can’t help you!

Rex Ryan for next HC of teh NY Jets!

  185. Ryan might have better players but he improved players like B Scott, Fabian Washington plus developed Ngata and this rookie FS Lehnord. If its not Shanahan or Cowher is has to be Rex!! Plus like someone mentioned before he is a beast of a man. I know that dosent matter but I do like my coaches big and fat!

  186. THE TRUTH to the matter at hand with our front office if that they want a puppet as a head coach and no veteran or upcoming assistant coordinators want to deal with that crap…WOODY AND MIKE T played PUPPET MASTER to MANGINI his whole term as head coach…WATCH this one the probable hire the HC from BOSTON COLLEGE because once again WOODY and MIKE T have the power to control him…

  187. Joe S. you’ve been repeatedlt spelling ‘BUY’ when you mean ‘BYE’… Just lettin ya know.

  188. how are jets crying now that mangini is gone??yeh he got screwed over with the most overrated QB of all time…but he was completely out to lunch we played 5 teams with less talent than us and lost 4?!?(should have been 5) sure it was ALL his fault but we didnt need to be in shotgun on every 3rd and short did we?? now that a team likes him we think hes a HOF coach all of a sudden?? and you cant blame Farve for the defensive breakdown that happened at the end of the yr… also i cant say who will or wont be a good coach…but clemens/ratliff have to get ther chance to play good QBs are developed…we better not bring in a matt cassel or derek anderson or leftwich….to the young fans out there, its not too late to save yourself the best team in the nfl is also in NY switch to a giants fan before it too late!!!save the youth!!!

  189. I love it when the Dolphins lose. Great job Ravens!!! Rex Ryan for the next Jet HC!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 INT’s ,nope still don’t miss Chad, LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

  190. to say the ravens have better personell up and down their defensive roster is stupid…to whoever said it.
rex ryan has been dealing with a banged up ravens defense the whole year, ecpsecially in their secondary. half of their secondary is missing, including their premier shut down corner mc calister. ryan has made a bunch of second stringers look like pro bowlers, and you say the jets dont have personell??? stupid lets see…..
revis is top 4 when it comes to corners in the league, we have probably THE best NT if not top 2 in the league when it comes to jenkins. ellis and harris are above average, we have kerry rhodes who has had pro bowl years consistently(excluding 08) and not to mention a huge LB in pace….and your saying we dont have the talent?? id even say the jets(not having any serious injuries) had a more talented defensive core than what ryan was working with this year! thats to show you how important coaching and defensive scheming is.

  191. thats so funny did you guys see chad today what a joke now he can but the fins thru hell over the next few years im glad the bum is gone

  192. Billick!! Finally a coach with some credentials to coach an NFL team. I’ve been asking for this gus all along. For all you guys who think this guy stinks, take a look at his ring finger. He was not “given” the defense, as he maintained and drafted defensive talent year in and year out. His big mistake was Boller, whom he couldn’t let go because of his ego and refusal to believe the guy wasn’t good. Other than that, he was an excellent coach for Baltimore. I would love to see a guy like him as the NYJ coach. Enough with these coordinators. Go out and get Billick!!!!!

  193. In my business if you earned something due to your performance or prurchase something it is spelled Buy!

Bye usually means good bye! Se ya! … etc.

I think the spelling bye for a buy week should be questioned.

  194. freeman

it was the ravens defense that one that lone chip, not billick’s supposed offensive wit. he got fired for a reason, stop living in the past. this is not a popularity contest, do your homework and take note to what someone can actually bring to a team, besides the fact you know his first name.

  195. At least Chad got into the show!

Favre didn’t have enough to go 2 and 3 to get into the show.

    Nuf said!

  196. Correction:

At least Chad got into the show!

Favre didn’t have enough to go 3 and 2 to get into the show.

    Nuf said!

  197. Joe S

    A true blowhard bafoon!!!

    nuff said!!!

  198. joe s

Holy crap let it go already.

  199. If I didnt know any better I woulda thought that was Favre out there having a typical game not CP!!!

    Favre Never Come Back Please

  200. section133 you buying your PSL?

I am in 121 and I think we are headed to the upper deck.

I can’t see spending any money on PSL’s plus paying $130 per seat per game.

  201. who do we get with are first pick

  202. Joe S

I’m in section 119!!! Please go upstairs, You give the Lower level a Bad Rap!!!

  203. tebow

  204. DRE KIRKPATRICK CB #1 draft pick if still availible for the JETS…

  205. KIRKPATRICK CAN PLAY WR OR CB WITH GREAT VERSITALITY

  206. you never know what Ratliff could be. need to see him play he may be great. and i am voting for Rex Ryan

  207. ridinmywave

You’re not a bright mind when it comes to the Jets now are you? I’ve been a fan for 27 years my friend, and it’s of my opinion that Brian Billick would be an excellent choice for the Jets.

So did Tom C win a Super Bowl with the Giants or was it the D-line?

Did Bill Walsh win any rings for his team or was it Montana and Rice?

How about NE Bill? Rings his or should he give them back because of Brady?

Brian Billick was the COACH of the Ravens when they won a Super Bowl. A Super Bowl!! Forget all this offensive genius garbage. He didn’t label himsef. The media did. The guy put together a top notch team and maintained a very good team for years. We could use that. If you want another coordinator with a big learning curve, well your mistake. But for my money, I’d like to see an experienced coach such as Billick.

Do my homework? You’re a clueless clown when it comes to football and our NYJ. Make sure you have your snack in your bookbag before mommy sends you on to school tomorrow. Hah

  208. Brian Billick inherited a Defense and NEVER built an effective offense with the Ravens!

He SUCKS! Don’t want he coaching the Jets!

    Rex Ryan is the guy!

Would like Shanahan if only responsibility is coaching! He doesn’t want to be in NY and neither does Cower!

Both don’t want the pressure of coaching here!

How about an experienced high quality experienced coach wanting to coach the Jets before we talk money! How about that for a change! The money should be secondary because they will get paid well!

  209. largebarge,

I have been going to Jet games since 1978 and in 121 since 1980.

Are you the guy that hanges over into the two seats immediately to your left and right?

I would hate to pay a PSL and have to sit next to you!

  210. I agree with Joe. After watching what the Ravens defense did to Chad, I would love to have him next year. I hope we are not going to have a re-peat of the dumb and dumber hire? I hope Woody is smarter than hiring Billick or the BC coach. If we are truely out of the Cowher hunt that I would love Rex Ryan!!

  211. Mangini was horrid. I don’t mind, if I watch the Jets and they lose because they get beat by a more talented team but, I hated watching us lose to garbage with the talent on this team.

Those of you who thought Mangini should stay – without citing our record, tell me what was good about Mangini’s coaching.

I think Shanahan would be a great coach for the Jets. He does an amazing job with the running game. We already have all the pieces. Our Offense would go to the next level with him. Get a strong D-coordinator, draft a dominant Linebacker, build up our secondary, and we will be back in business.

  212. SAME OLD CHAD! AHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
