Peter King is reporting some breaking not-news on SI.com. Not that Favre is retiring, but that he’s again saying he thinks he will. Peter King truly thinks Favre is done this time though … for reals … no seriously … he means it this time.
Speaking to Brett Favre Friday night from Mississippi, I got the distinct impression that he was going to retire from football, this time for good. But they don’t sell insurance for this kind of thing, obviously, as his flip-flopping of the last three years shows.
I reported today on NBC Sports that Favre told me he informed Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum that “it may be time to look in a different direction” at the quarterback position when they spoke Monday. A day earlier, Favre continued his poor play down the stretch — the Jets finished by losing four of their last five, ruining their 8-3 start that had them in Super Bowl contention — in a disastrous three-interception loss to the Dolphins. The Jets fired Eric Mangini as coach … and could have made Favre’s decision about whether to return in 2009 a negative..
Favre said that Tannenbaum said to him Monday, “If I ask you about your future now, I know what you’ll say. So I’m not going to ask you.” What Tannenbaum did ask Favre is to give his decision some time, that the Jets definitely wanted him back and he should take all the time he needs to decide.
According to Favre, the quarterback responded, “I’ll take some time, but it may be time to look in a different direction.”
One other factor may come into play, but we should probably not read everything into it. Favre said team doctors recommended that if his intention was to play again that he should have arthroscopic surgery to repair his damaged right biceps. Favre declined.
You shouldn’t read a certain retirement into that, however. Late in his Green Bay career, Favre had a similar injury in his left arm and he said it went away without surgery being needed.
“I’m going to do like Mike [Tannenbaum] says — give it a few weeks and make a decision,” Favre said.
He said nothing with finality Friday night. But he sounded very much, finally, like a former quarterback.
All I’m saying is that I’ve seen entertainer James Brown’s act, so I know about the whole “is this the end of the show?” routine … I’ll believe it when I see it …

In all honesty i really dont care if he said he retired then came back or whatever. Or if he does the same thing this year. The Jets should be working their team as if they have no solid quarterback.(please resign ratliff)The main reason these coaches dont want to come here is because we dont have a quarterback. We should start pursuing trades and free agents after the super bowl. Donovan is a nice, intriguing option if they loose early in these playoffs. David Carr could run an offence more confidently then Kellen.

1) big time coaches don’t want to come here because woody sucks not because of the qb situation. parcells went to miami last year with cleo lemon and nobody else.
2) i am even more tired of peter king than i am of favre.
3) there’s nothing wrong with one year of clemens or ratliff behind a good o-line and handing off to good rb’s. both of them are better than tavaris jackson and gus frerotte.

Just so long as Brett Ratliff returns.
I’m confident he would win any fair competition for the starter’s job.
-
Seeya Favre! dont throw any more picks on your way out and please dont cry brett or take 2 months to realize ur terrible

Sammy
Im convinced that you are Brett Favres mother with how much you defend him. Bottomline is that all the players come into the season wanting to win. Favre made monumental mistakes this season and he should be held accountable for them regardless of what his status is or should I say WAS.
Do you really think the players care if he is a HOF QB throwing pick 6′s every other game….ABSOLUTELY NOT.
-
Favre, get the hell out of here. You are obviously not wanted by Jets fans with working brains.
-
Sammy G loves Brett Favre more than he loves the Jets.
I don’t know why he doesn’t post on BrettFavresBlog.com

->Favre made monumental mistakes this season
The biggest of which was coming to this pathetic franchise at all.
->Do you really think the players care if he is a HOF QB throwing pick 6’s every other game
It was 6 TD’s in a single game, not 6 INT’s you should learn the difference before acting like your opinion is worth hearing
-
please be true, please be true, please be true, please be true, please be true, please be true, please be true.
-
favre fan u should probly learn the difference between 6 ints and what a pick 6 is. is this your first year watchin football. but if there is a man who has the ability to throw 6 ints that man is brett favre

Its funny how ower woner Woody Allen fired Mangini. It almost seems like he was listening to the players on the coach. I wonder if he knows that the players are suppose to not like the coach. Maybe he did his own impression of Jerry Jones. If Brett doesnt come back it makes Woody look like comical. We dont have a coach or a QB!!! All we have is alot of yacking!! PS- pick a coach ASAP/. Pick one that would sit Brett if need be!!

I heard that Kerry Collins could be available, and he could be a possibility?
-
Andre – you’re right, I’m only skimming over the drivel here and did read that wrong. As far as my first year watching football, it was my first year ever watching any Jets games, and that was the most horrible display of coaching I’ve ever seen, anywhere.
At least you finally got rid of that idiot, but it’s still funny watching the Jets fans flip flop constantly LOL.
You hate Pennington, no you want him back.
You hate Mangini, no you want him back.
It’ll be the same thing with Favre, you’re just in the hate stage right now.
Speaking of Pick 6′s, Pennington just tossed one, his second pick of the game and we’re still in the first half LOL.
-
favre fan,I dont think the jet fans are flip floppers, we re just very divided. some of us liked mangini others hated him. Some of us hate the human turnover machine others love him.

->I dont think the jet fans are flip floppers, we re just very divided. some of us liked mangini others hated him. Some of us hate the human turnover machine others love him.
Love? LOL where? From what I’ve seen the whole town is ready to not only blame him for the whole season (although “blaming” anyone for the Jets having a winning season does seem contradictory in itself), but for death, taxes, and war in the middle east.
Like I said, it’s just the hate stage you’re going through, before you all want him back again just like with Pennington and Favre. I’m hoping whoever your new coach is will release him, so he can go play for a real playoff contender like Tampa, and you can get back to your normally scheduled losing.
Then you can be happy, until you get to the “we wish we had him back” stage LOL.
-
Lord, I’m not a praying man but…if you can get rid of Brett Favre’s sideshow and have the Jets focus on football…that would be great.
Thanks,
Dan

Please go away Brett. It will have two benefits – No more Favre drama around NY (sorta, I’m sure it will continue when he leaves and more people take pot shots and him) and in addition Peter King will lose the only story he’s ever able to break lately – not like this was news anyway but still.
-
Hey Jimbo, all the “favre drama” as you put it was from the media, players, and fans. Favre is a professional, he did not contribute to this. He’s won a superbowl,3 mvp’s, etc…etc…etc.. this isn’t his first rodeo.
NY just didn’t know how to handle someone like that.
-
The Jets focus on football. What a great idea!
I don’t want Favre back unless he is really dedicated to off season work outs. He less than inspirational pre-game pep talk before last weeks game speaks volumes.
Brett……….All in
or stay in Hattiesburg. -
Favre fan what team do you like
-
This exact scenario is why I didn’t want Favre here and said as much before he arrived.
It seemed like a reckless decision made hastily by a non-football Jet (namely Woody/Tanny) and then they hypocritically fire the coach after saying Woody keeps his employees. What a sham!
The fans were duped once again for a little sparkle and less substance.
I didn’t “love” Chad Pennington, recently, but he was here, and he was ours, and we knew that he would give his all. Everyone knew his limitations, and we had 2 QBs that we wanted to take a look at behind him, and the season felt positive and good before Brett.
I know the coaching was iffy but Favre’s arrival did change the playbook. I can’t defend the defensive coaching either and I think since Leon’s arrival it is inexcusable not to give him the ball 8-10 times a game EVERY game. The D does suffer when the offense sputters though.
But in my opinion Favre was a bad decision for this team. Maybe not the organization because they wanted to rob people.
And whatever Favre was he no longer is. And I’m not insulting him I’m just saying he shouldn’t have been brought to the Jets. I do know that Favre wanted to win every game.
Would a 1st and a 3rd and 6th Rd picks gotten you Matt Ryan? Too late to speculate on that but the team does need a QB.
-
Oh and BTW Chad is losing against Batlimore presently. He did learn a new offense very quickly unlike other QBs.
-
How can anyone defend Favre? Are we watching the same game? Hands down the worst performance I have ever seen. Yes, Sammy G, there was a time where Favre was competent, but those days are dead and gone. He sucks, plain and simple, and he must go.
-
To section133 and Favre Fan: Favre did throw 6 int’s once in a playoff game, and came back. It was good he did then, not so good now. Favre, make up your mind!
-
LEAVE NOW YOU SCUMBAG!!!!!!
-
I WISH SOMEONE WOULD HAVE PUNCHED YOU IN THE FACE FOR ALL THE TIMES YOU SLAPPED YOUR TEAMMATES IN THE BUTT!!!
THATS RIGHT I WISH SOMEONE IN THAT CLUBHOUSE (ROOKIE OR VETEREN) WOULD HAVE BROKEN YOUR NOSE YOU FILTHY PIECE OF HUMAN WASTE
-
Leave this horseplay out to pasture!
-
Fonz…
Ummm. Never mind.
-
This goes to show you what the NFL is all about…
What have you done for me lately?
Does anyone care what Brett Favre did in Green Bay? I certainly dont… He is getting paid millions of $$$ to produce for teh Jets.
If you cant get the job done, get out.
-
You guys have issue more complicated that football. This is just a game. jets had a better season we should be happy. The coach was the problem 100 %. He had no clue how to motivate the players and keep them together. I hope favre goes bc jet funs are mean to a HOF. He should go away in peace and the jets do not have to wait another 40 years to win a superball.. I am a jet fun for 15 years but stop with the bad mouthing. The coach is gone. A new season is around the corner. GO JETS!!!
-
A carefual examination of every team’s QB situation reveals that the market for Favre may very well be zero. Name a non NFC North team that needs a QB? Sometimes HOF’s need to realize that the time to move on has arrived. Regarding the Jet situation, why is Ratliff such an afterthought? What part of his game sucks?

No HOF’er deserves to be treated the way Favre has been treated by his own teammates and the fans.
Favre leave this toxic waste dump as soon as possible.
