Yes, I was a proponent of Flacco at the top of the second, or of sliding back and taking him later on in the first round (which is to say of doing exactly what Baltimore did). Even knowing how things worked out with Ryan- who was stunningly good this year- I would still do the same thing if given the opportunity. Not only does Flacco have better tools, but he ties up much less of the cap.

I agree that from a scheme standpoint Clowney should be starting alongside Cotchery, and that it's unlikely that a first round prospect would bring anything better to the offense. It's too early to lock into particular players at this point, but I would think BPA would be the obvious way to go, and that spot in the draft is often a good one for safeties, linebackers and running backs. Adding a DT who could rotate with Jenkins and eventually replace him would be worthwhile, as the Jets have a plethora of ends and could move back and forth between a 3-4, 4-3 (and even a 5-2) look.

seanmac, you know I wanted the Jets to trade up to the Rams pick to get Matty Ice and I was (and am) no fan of Gholston. But, I think Lombardi's assessment of the Jet drafts is pretty harsh. The Jets have added 3 Pro Bowl players (for whatever that's worth...Mangold, Leon and Revis) and an alternate (Brick) from the last 3 drafts. How much better could they have done? But, my criticism was that when you have a chance to draft a potential franchise QB in the first round, as the Jets have had the last 3 drafts, sooner or later the decision not to pull the trigger will hurt and the Jets could've tried to get Matty Ice or Flacco last year...the latter of which I think you endorsed.

As for the cap situation, Tanny has proven to be very adept at cap management and Favre's anticipated retirement as well as the rising cap and trimming of dead wood should give him enough room to sign a guy like Bart Scott, but not Ashomuga. As for the defensive players being overrated, that's hard for me to judge because I thought the schemes were so poor. For instance, a blitz can steer a QB to a particular side of the field, which on the Jets would be Revis' because he's the best cover corner...in that way the fact that Lowery/Law/Poteat are weak on the other side could be minimized. Also, as I said before, the Jets rarely brought pressure up the middle, which they should have done because teams started to let Jenkins penetrate deep into the strong side and countered weak...regular run blitzes would have neutralized that tactic.

On the draft, at 17 the strategy should be BPA and if Knowshon Moreno is still there, how isn't he BPA? TJ won't last forever and, as great as he was, he left yards on the field because he can't run wide effectively and turn the corner. Moreno is explosive and a threat to take any carry to the house if he turns the corner or makes it to the second-level. Because the QB situation will be in flux, why not make the strength of the offense, the running game, even stronger? I like Leon in the Kevin Faulk role and I'd like to see TJ and Moreno in the Dillon/Maroney roles. Leon is not as thickly built as a Sproles or Jones-Drew and he has not shown that he can run between the tackles effectively. But, he's a weapon that needs to be deployed. As for a WR that is a deep threat, why not try the second round for that (or later because the Jets should also go BPA in the second round)...the Jets might have their deep threat with Clowney, so I would be hesitant to draft a WR in the first round unless the Jets are sure that the WR would start, meaning the WR has to clearly be a better prospect than Clowney...at 17? A WR like that would go sooner.

Gang green - I assume you are joking about Dre Kirkpatrick. He is a fantastic prospect with size and speed and could indeed one day be a first round pick. Probably just as a corner though.

Of course, he's a high school senior and therefore won't be eligible for the NFL draft until 2012, but I am pretty sure you knew that?!?!

Jets should have traded up to get McFadden or Ryan? They would have no shot at Ryan because the Falcons were not going to trade the 3rd pick and pass up on a chance to start a new face for the franchise. And Al Davis was pretty set on getting his star player. If anything, Mr T should have traded down, if he had the chance, stockpiled picks, and get more talented players. I was not a big Gholston fan this season. I could see him being a good player but he needs a motivator as coach.

Igs, u are way off.......the true identity with a team starts with the line play, which the Jets have. What do I think the Jets are missing??? A big bruiser at RB - Jacobs, Leron McClain. A guy like this punishes the D and makes u pay. Look at the Ravens......they pound the ball 40 times a game and Flacco throws some key 1st downs and bomb passes. The Jets should take this identity of a powerful O-Line, Ratliff at QB, pound the ball and blitz by playing solid D, which is what this team's identity is..........Rex Ryan and his brother would provide this team with that identity.

Here a good question I am all for REX RYAN coming to the JETS but are D.HARRIS and K RHODES = to J LEWIS and REED i know defense is about scheme and putting players in positions to were they can be successful I'm just wonder truely does our 3-4 personel fit his scheme as well as it does in BALTIMORE....I think if REX comes we see more FA's hit this defense before it truely becomes a BEAST in the EAST....

Did anybody watch the Ravens destroy the Dolphins yesterday? Has Chad ever had a good day against the Ravens defense?
Need I saw more! There is only one candidate for the JETS- REX RYAN will blitz the JETS to respectability. We need a intimidating defense to earn respect.

Woody- HIRE RYAN !!!

Ganggreen I totally agree, his track record speaks for itself, and last year was no exception, and we even got to see he can still run effectively, he is probably the best and smartest fb in the game.....I see no one wanted to give tanni credit for the aquisition either, lol. I really hope he retires as a jet.
