D. Rose: What the Hell is Going on Here!?

eurotripitalianmassage2I spent the last 12 days backpacking around Europe (ah!  mi scusi!!! Ed.) and while keeping an eye on the site via my blackberry I have been pretty much been clueless about what has been going on with the team.

I didn’t see the Miami game but I heard enough from my friends to know that it was an abomination, but was Mangini really to blame?  The more I read about what has been going on with Favre and the way he played as well as him teammates reaction to his behavior I am wondering more and more if he was the real problem with this team.  I doubt if anyone has been more critical of the coaching staff then me. I will admit that I was not calling for Mangini’s head but rather a house cleaning of the coordinators.

I am left wondering what exactly happened to this team and will a change of Head Coaches fix what is ailing this group. To me it seemed that what was wrong with this team was Favre. His play was really pathetic and it looked as if he was mailing it in. I could tell early on that he wasn’t having and fun and he was not one of those “New York Players.” I am 99.9% sure that he will retire and I think that is a good thing.

Why did Mangini have to go? As a Mets fan I am quite familiar with collapses and I don’t feel that this one was as terrible as the Mets the last two years. I think that he could have stayed. It seems to me that the organization is siding with Favre after this year. I think that was a huge mistake. Many of the players seemed OK with Mangini and disgusted with Favre and his me first attitude. I think this was another quick rush to judgment by an organization that is scared to death that its PSL gamble will fail and Woody’s cash will disappear. So where do we go from here?

The next HC pick is crucial! We need to find someone who can stay for a while. If you look at the successful teams there is some continuity with the coaching staff. I would like to see someone with some gruff and intensity in the job, but I am leaning toward Rex Ryan.

I am sorry if some of this has already been covered but I am trying to wrap my head around this after a long 4 days in Amsterdam!

He didn’t have to go and I hate to say it, but the Jets have clearly been motivated by economic factors lately.

You want to know why B. Shotty is the leading contender for HC? Because NO ONE else would work with Farve again. Mangini is gone because he wouldn’t take Farve back. Period.

Same old crap for the Jets. We are forced to suffer one indignity after another.

  2. too late.

the first reaction around here was to blame it all on mangini. that may end up being a big mistake.

  3. I dont get why the newspapers think Jet fans want Spags. Check out this poll fans overwhelmingly want Rex.
    http://www.jetsinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187490

  4. Mangini was not to blame but he was also in over his head and his early success went to his head as well. He looked indecisive and unsure of himself, not good traits for a quality HC. I agree that Favre was mostly to blame, but like TJ said, it’s on the coach to do something about it. Not many people read into those quotes like I did, seemed like TJ was saying Mangini did not reel Brett in enough. Maybe not take him out, but how about not passing on 4th and short (and throwing bombs instead of short routes)… how about running your two best weapons (three including TRich) and picking up a first down. Those calls came from Mangini. I don’t know that he needed to be fired but he definitely deserved it the way he handled the pressure down the stretch, and how he handled the team. You can blame everyone else all you want, but the team was 8-3 and beat the 10-0 Titans on the road easily, and that same team crumbled under the watch of Mangini. He gets the boot.

And Nick — B-Schott is not the leading candidate. I have not seen that report anywhere but one place a couple of days ago by a reporter who knows no more than any of us. And what do you mean Mangini is gone because he wouldn’t take Favre back? That doesn’t even make sense. Favre is going to retire and Mangini would have loved to stay either way.

  5. To me, Mangini is a lot like Pennington. We all love him because of the promise, but in the end, he is not good enough to get us all the way there. I don’t think he will be a Super Bowl coach for a long time.

  6. Razor -

Remember how Woody didn’t give any reasons for Mangini getting the axe? Well I think that a large part of the reasoning for his removal was that he bluntly refused to play Farve next season. Yeah, it sounds a little insane, but that is the way the jets FO always works. Insanely.

Hope you are right about Shotty. I read it yesterday and damn near had a coronary.

  7. Did you happen to come across Woody Johnson while you were backpacking in Europe? The Jets wanted Bill Cowher, and he said no because Woody Johnson refused to meet with him personally. Woody’s excuse: He left the country like an escaped convict after the collapse, putting Mike Tannenbaum completely in charge of the coaching search, despite the obvious conflict of interest between him and guys like Cowher and Shanahan who want some control over front office decisions. Mangini and Favre and all the other players and coaches deserve a share of the blame, but the dysfunction starts at the top and trickles down.

  8. I don’t want to apologies for Mangini too much, as I spent the greater part of the season yelling at him from my seat but i think that he was just too young to handle the Farve situation the way he wanted too (which was to bench him). This is a guy that has been learning on the job. In time he could have been a great coach. He just needed to find his own voice.

  9. Welcome back.

I don’t share your certainty that Favre will retire. I think he’ll be back, albeit perhaps not with the Jets. What does everyone else think?

  10. According to Peter King he practically told Tanny to look elsewhere.

  11. On SNY today apparently Adam Schein said the Jets said Spags had a bad interview because he seems more interested in the Denver job. Once again the good coaches want no part of us…

  12. Bent…would welcome him back…with another team. Not so sure his heart was into this. All I know, is he did not want come here and he said so.

Again, let’s move on to the future. Still a solid team, decent schedule..(not sure why we go to Oakland again!!!)

Good selection of available HC’s and 3 young QB’s who deserve a chance…Good running game which will help them.

My pick is get a solid HC with a defensive mind, dump Sutton and make Schott/assist HC & allow him to open it up.

  13. Favre has to retire. We need to know if KC or Ratliff is worth a damn.

  14. Hangar -

Just wondering why you would want Schott back. What is it that you see in his game planning or play calling that you like.

This is a serious question. I’m not trying to be an ass.

  15. Bent what team would actually take Favre now? Coming off his previous year there was interest from a few teams but after that performance down the stretch I dont think any team other then the Jets would be willing to pay him 13 mill or even half that.

  16. Nick-
In 2006 we were pretty creative, maybe it was Mangini pulling the reigns back on Schotty. I am still wondering what happened to the 2006 creativity…

  17. I don’t know why people are turning down the Jets head coaching job. They can easily get a quality free agent QB. Both Brooks Bollinger and Patrick Ramsey are available. Problem solved.

  18. Man, we’re idiots. I don’t see one name on that list that is a definate to be better than Mangini. The Jets bent to media pressure to get rid of someone that got railroaded into playing Farve. When Farve played good, Mangini was ok. When Farve played bad, Mangini sucked. It was all about Farve and PSLs, not winning!!! Mangini wasn’t perfect, but who’s out there that will be an improvement…the next Rich Kotite???

  19. you are right on point D Rose, favre was the biggest mistake the Jets ever made since passing on Dan Marino, now we have put ourselves in the hands of KC and maybe Ratliff.

  20. I think Derek Anderson will be the QB next year.

  21. Nick…understand…

Schott did a good job in 06, one of the hotest OC in the league. I think we were all worried he may go….07 there was a cluster with Penny and 08 he was forced to use Farve. Because of Farve the O was very vanilla…what can you do with a prima donna who does not want to learn your O nor did he care for anyone but himself. Take the money which only the JETS were offering and run!!!

On another note, we all knew what he was about and welcomed him..I included ,felt he was a better choice than Chad..who was a true Jet & I liked enough to buy his # 10 jersey!!

I like what we have…need a QB will come out of the pack or we draft one….

after 40 years what is another 2-3?

  22. dunno why you get so down bout KC or Ratliff. We will never know how they play, until they play. KC performance in 2007 should not be held against him, as he was running for his life on most plays

  23. Hangar-
good points. I do disagree with one thing you said, I’m not sure everyone “knew what Favre was about”. If that was the case the signing was purely for PSL’s because the offense/team was clearly built to be low risk. Maybe mangement thought they could control Favre’s style.

I’m 36 and have seen 2 AFC championship games(both disasters). I really would like not to wait 2-3 years.

  24. DEREK ANDERSON?!?!?!? Check out his stats their horrific!!
How can you possibly start that guy over Clemens or Ratty?

  25. Craig
Older than you and also would not want to wait..

While I do not believe it was all about the PSL…I believe that played a good part into it.

I think there were a number of reasons..the main one being KC could not win the job!!! Penny beat him out and we all know Penny while loved was not going to take us to the big game..

soooo along came Brett!!! What anyone in the FO will admit ishe did not want to be here and when he took the money, he was hell bent on doing it his way.

This put evferything into a tail spin…O needed to be re-done… very plain jane and once opposing teams figured it out it was easy to defendand guess what our D need to be on the field more than expected..( no excuse for Sutton)..

Forget EM traiding Anderson here…nor would I want him. If you can get Quin , I’d open the book

  26. I’m not saying I would start him…..I have heard the rumor (talk radio). Also heard McNabb’s name thrown around.

If you think the fan base is going to be upset with Shotty as the coach, try going into 09 with Ratty or KC at QB…

  27. sorry about spelling..and all..
Horns are getting to me. need them to beat Ohio for my pool

  28. I dont want any part of Derek Anderson!!!

  29. Ill take a raw Rat and a jittery KC over a teams leftovers.
Look up “Favre and Jets 2008 season” in the dictionary. thats what we get with mcnabb or anderson.

and Craig- the Hangar is older and wiser (lets say due to experience) when it comes to the JETS. Trust me.

  30. What about Kerry Collins???

  31. oh no the barge is back, lets keep the favre talk down. or it will be CAPS ALL NIGHT LONG

  32. Hangar-
    Again good points.

One thing that does bother me , is, which I have seen several times on this site is the declaration that Pennington could not have gotten them to a big game.
He came within 2 FG misses (and Herms horrible coaching)of playing in a championship game.

By the way, this would have been the most talented offense by far Pennington would have played with. In 2006 Kevin Barlow/ Derrick Blaylock were the featured backs and they were 10-6.

    Sutton not good.

    I like Shotty as OC

    Westoff no brainer

I still cannot believe they fired Mangini with no plan in place……

  33. collins, oh god no. hes an older pennington, without slash and dash they unsuccessful

  34. I can’t talk about Favre anymore, I’m exausted with the topic!!! Besides I’m convinced he’s done!!!

  35. we all thank you

  36. craig

I agre wholeheartedly!!! How could the FO let Mangini go, with no plan in place!!! UTTERLY ABSURD!!!!

  37. i’m on that barge too!
get it instead of ship… barge…. whoa am i funny

  38. Everyone was calling for Mangini’s head a couple of weeks ago and now it was a big mistake??

We are a cursed team that noone will touch and whoever does ends up getting bit in the ass.

    –A tired Jets fan

  39. chrebookie

Please, for the love of God…….STOP!!!!

  40. I haven’t posted on this site in a while. I preferred to watch the season unfold. Now, I feel the need to speak up. The problem wasn’t getting Favre. It was a good move for a team that had pent a lot of money in free agency and went into the season with raised expectations. Chad is limited and that was evidenced in the playoffs this year. He will not win a super bowl.

The real problem is that Woody and the front office panicked. They saw what happened in Green Bay during the offseason/preseason and didn’t want it to happen in NJ. They decided to back Favre and not Mangini. Mangini deserves some of the blame but if the QB had been anyone other than Favre, he would have been benched plain and simple. He didn’t want to be in NY and played like a little p***y in the cold. So what do the Jets do, they fire a coach and decide to start from scratch. If they have t change their defensive system this offseason, I will scream. Bottom line, dumb*** move on their part.

  41. LMP23

I’m happy Mangini’s gone!!! I just can’t believe the FO let him go, with no backup plan!!!! Thats All!!! Mangini was clearly inept, and was outcoached countless times!!!

  42. largebarge

Seriously….I am a loser. and it keeps me up at night.

Mangini may not have been Vince Lombardi, but he was not Ray Handley either.

Please tell Cowher and the Jets are doing a cat and mouse game.

I have visions of the NY Post Headline… DUMB and DUMBER when they replaced Peter Carroll with Kottite

  43. Lareg..I agree..
    Bookie…I agree

Craig..2004…long time ago. Also keep remember, Penny did not score more than 7 points per game against a very good NE team…so what is to say he would have gotten us to the big one!!

Mangini will be good..he is smart and will learn from his mistakes..just like my kids!!! Said it before and will say it again, he shoule have fired his DC and had the Ba!!s to put Farve in place… I’m telling you he will not make that mistake again

  44. I think Favre will be back and pretty sure Jets Front Office would welcome him.

That said, I hope that he moves onto Minnesota. I believe Kellen Clemens can pilot this team from behind a solid line and running game.

Bring in Buddy’s Boys and pick up where Tangini left off, commiting to the 3-4 and drafting a bluechip DB and ILB as well as bring Vernon Gholston and David Clowney up to speed to become the playmakers we know they can be!

  45. craig

We’re all losers……Seriously!!!! We’re fans of this franchise, so what else can I say!!!! If you’re asking me if I think Cowher is still in the mix? I friggin’ hope so!!! I just cannot believe that Woody/Tanny, would let it go down the way it “supposedly” did!!!

  46. I’m very torn on Schott’s value as an OC (forget HC, I don’t see how he is even a consideration).

He had a great 06, he was innovative, creative, made the best of Chad, of rookie Leon with no other RBs to speak of and was as responsible as anyone for the 10-6 turnaround and playoff appearance.

In 07, he pretty much stunk, sure he had no O-Line which was a huge factor but what stuck in my craw was that he did nothing to change the offensive scheme when the season was in the tank and KC took over. He didn’t leverage KC’s mobility or arm strength (advantages over Chad) in fact he did the worst thing possible, he tried to make a rookie starting QB operate a precision, decision based, ball control, run 15 plays before you score, dink and dunk offense. Pretty much the last situation you want to put a rookie in with a crap O-Line. We should have been running the ball more, throwing down the field and moving the pocket to compensate for the line and taking advantage of KC’s feet.

Its tough to give the man a hard time about 08, I’m on this blog every day and I’ve seen the arguments about certain play calls in specific, critical situations but how much of that was Schotts and how much was Mangini ? Bet you anything Mangini called for those 3 running plays in a row against NE at home before Favre made him change the playbook.

Bottom line in 08 they were near the top of the league in points after having brought in a QB mid way through training camp. We were near the top of the league in running the ball and if Favre doesn’t throw 9 picks down the stretch all we are writing about today is who Mangini will replace Bob Sutton with.
The real question for 08 is how much of the offense’s success was Schotts and how much was Callahan.?

So its simple, hire Ryan (or Spags – 2nd choice) as the head coach and let him pick between Schotts and Callahan as his OC so either way we have some form of continuity.

As for QB I’m fine with going with the better of Clemens/Ratcliff (feeling very alone on that one) so bring in Garcia (or a comparable vet in case they both suck) and make it an open competition for the QB job.

With Ryan coaching up our defense, keeping the 3-4 in tact, we’ll only need to score 14 a game anyway.

  47. Hangar

I agree that he should have fired Sutton. I think they were looking to get Rob Ryan last off season and could not.

I really do not want to have the Penninton debate, but I will. He is a top 10 QB in the NFL. If Kerry Collins, Trent Dilfer and Rex Grossman can lead their teams to the Superbowl why is not possible to see Pennington take a team there. Also in 2004 he was playing with a non repaired R.C. Am I bias, yes, the guy has a ton of heart. But he can also play and win, that is why Tuna drafted him and signed him a decade later (almost a decade).

  48. very hard for Cowher to go back on his word now that he made his national TV message..

  49. Hangar,

Maybe Cowher will take a look at his 401k statment and sign on for big $$$$$$$$.

  50. Hangar

I totally hear you, but, I can’t help myself!!! I want Cowher!!!

  51. Thats the truth of it, $$$$ talks, Bulls@!$# walks!!!

  52. Craig
You or I yes… but when you make as much as he has and is..no. Like he said, one more year. he will still have his pickins… Buffalo, Green Bay, KC, Cinn, Chicago, Tampa, Minn., NO to name a few..

  53. can we just let Schoty try, and ultimatley fail. then bring in the chin?

  54. Hangar.
True that he will have his pick of teams, but noone has the dough like Woody. And his kids are in the area.

I dont care who you are or how much money you have it hurts to lose 30-50% of it.

I think Parcells went to the Cowboys because his ex-wife took half. When you have 20 million, 10 doesnt seem to be that much all of a sudden.

  55. Seriosly, this vacancy “should” be considered a very appealing job!!! The truth is, this team is very, very close, which is why I cant believe “none” of the senior prospects have declined consideration!!! I mean, there new facility alone is a major drwing point!!!

  56. Large-

I think the core is very good, but no QB is a tough sell.

  57. chrebookie

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! You dont throw away a season too ultimately get your guy!!! Cannot Happen!!!

  58. In addition to money, Cowher wants control and 4-3 defense. He wants to win!

Clearly, he doesn’t think he can do it with Tanny, Woody and possibly another season with Favre.

I’m glad, because Jets should continue to move towards 3-4 scheme dispite the crap that Merril Hoge’s said. After all we traded Vilma away and picked up Jenkins – enough said.

    No more waffling!

  59. Dear Barbella

Why do you say Cowher runs a 4-3 defense??? He was known for his 3-4 scheme in Pittsburgh!!! Did something change? And as far as control, GIVE IT TOO HIM!!! I like Tanny, I really do, but if you asked me, who I’d rather have in control??? Thats a simple answer, from me anyway, COWHER, 8 DAYS A WEEK!!!

  60. I dont know if Cherbokie was serious or kidding, but I think that may be the plan.

Stay with the same personnel, same coaches less Sutton and give it a shot. If they fail ..goodbye Shotty and Mr. T. Cowher is in as HC and has more control of the team.

If Shotty is a sucess say 10-6 his first year and then has a horrible 2nd year. In his 3rd year they have a winning record, but fail to make the playoffs…wait a second….this sounds familiar

  61. Listen, I know Cowher is an “Unrealistic” option at this point!!! So, what about Billick? I really like his style!!! Plus he could bring Mike Nolan along with him for DC!!! I’m just saying!!!

  62. freeman..nice post

  63. As long a Billick brings a time machine and that nasty Defense he had 9 years ago, I’m all for it…..Otherwise if Billick is the next Jets coach I will become Pats fan.

  64. I still can’t agree with those of you who want Schotty back. I’m sorry, but I think in most games we were consistently outcoached on both sides of the ball. Before the end of the season, I agreed with Bassett. That is, I would have been willing to bring Mangini back for at least one more year provided he changed both of his coordinators.

Sutton may be a nice guy, but he simply wasn’t good enough as a defensive coordinator. I haven’t heard anyone talking about bringing him back though, so let’s move on.

Yes. Schotty had a good first year, but since then, what has he done? There has been no consistency on our offense. Somehow his play calling was both erratic and predictable! Why have shotgun formations on 3rd and 1 or even 4th and 1 when you have both T Jones and Washington in the backfield? He never seemed to give Leon enough touches. And how often did you ever see Clowney or Stuckey in the game? This team was made to pound the ball with T Jones. But how many games did we all think he should have had more carries? Running the ball more would have made Favre even more dangerous with the play action. I’m sorry, but I simply can’t agree with Tannenbaum or those of you who still want Schotty back as the offensive coordinator or, worse yet, as head coach.

After 2006, Schotty was described as a creative genius. Well, after 2008, I think he was more like the people who make those paintings where the monkeys throw paint at a canvas and call it creative art. Please. I don’t mean to be harsh, but I really don’t like the idea of him coming back. The only thing worse would be bringing back Sutton, or maybe Paul Hackett.

Here’s my two cents. From my admittedly layperson’s vantage point, I am impressed with Rex Ryan, and think that he might just be the best person for the job. I like what he’s done with an already good Ravens defense. Of course, being a good coordinator doesn’t guarantee he will make a good head coach, but I think he’s worth a try. Personally, I think he might be a better fit than Spags, (who has dropped to my number two choice behind Ryan.) Maybe Rex can get his brother Rob here as defensive coordinator. Then I’d like to see Bill Callahan kept on to run the offense. (Not Schotty!) Remember several years back when Callahan was the coach of the Raiders and they ran the ball on us 20-something times in a row without us begin able to stop them from picking up first down after first down? Well, with Bill Callahan as our offensive coordinator, I think next year we could be the team doing that to other teams! With Rex Ryan’s passion and intensity, backed up by his brother to lead the defense and a “try to stop us”, smash-mouth running game behind Bill Callahan, we’d have a pretty darn formidable team.

As for our next QB, I really hope that Favre retires and/or doesn’t come back to the Jets next year. I’m all in favor of letting the winner of a competition between Ratliff and Clemens, (which would probably be Ratliff,) be our next starting quarterback. Both would make mistakes, yes. But I think one of them, especially Ratliff, could develop into the next Matt Cassel. Or better. And with a reliance on a strong running game and a scary good, turnover-creating defense, a newbie like Ratliff would certainly throw fewer interceptions than Favre did. And Ratliff or Clemens are both young and could be our starting quarterback for a long time.

Anyway, again, I’m not a football professional by any means. I’m only an interested observer and lifelong Jets fan. Yet, I think with Rex Ryan at HC, Bill Callahan at OC, Rob Ryan at DC, and Ratliff (or Clemens) at QB, we’d be ready to have a great year next year. But that’s only my humble opinion. What do I know? Maybe Tannenbaum would be right to bring back Schotty and Favre…

  65. PS – Sorry for writing such a long post!

  66. Craig

WOW!!! Why such hatred for Billick? Besides, personally, I dont think we’re “soooo” far off with defensive personel!!! We have talent on D, I think, anyway!!!

  67. Steve-

The Jets Offense did put up a lot of points this year.

Play calling always looks bad when you do not execute. Them not finding an identity on offense is a legitimate critism….Although at 8-3, I thought the game plan specfic route was working well.

You have to throw a vet in the QB mix.

BTW- Clowney was a Green Bay practice squad player and barely made the team. Everyone on this site thinks he is Wesley Walker. I am also intrigued by his speed, but come on. The guy has been in 2 organizations and has yet to really play. He did have a sick 1st NFL catch though.

  68. Large,

Have you seen the Ravens play the eight seasons after the superbowl……if Billick is an offensive guru. I’m Brad Pitt’s twin brother.

He could not develop a QB ( for 8 season)….and the year after he leaves they all of a sudden draft a francise QB… he was the problem and he should be thankful that he had a criminal like Ray Lewis on his team, to make the defense awesome.

  69. my post bout schotty, both sarcastic and real….

i would not put it past the FO to pull such a maneuver with schotty to get to cowher next year.
I think the realized they missed that barge (instead of ship- get it?, that one is for you large!) and they are just waiting for it to return.
if we cant get the man they really want, (and only they know who that is) then we hire schotty, let him do what he can. then throw the bag of money at cowher next year and tell him to “right this sinking barge.”

  70. chrebookie…

sadly I think you may be correct in your thinking, it is quite possible.

  71. Craig

I’m not giving Billick my vote!!! I actually voted for Rex, but who’s too say that Rex will be a master drafter, or an Offensive genius??? I just want the FO too explore every possible option, or as Tanny says, according too Woody, “No stone left unturned”!!!

    Chrebookie

    You’re a comic genius!!! lol!!!

  72. Largemarge,

You’re absolutely right. The Steelers have been running the 3-4 since Chuck Noll. I may have gotten Cowher confused with Tomlin. Regardless, I agree with you.

If we can get Bill Cowher and keep the 3-4 defense, then give him control. However, I did read Woody and Tannenbaum communicated there was wiggle room. Yet, Cowher pulled the plug on the interview.

I don’t think Tannenbaum’s experience or ego would clash with Cowher. Rather, he’s proven to he’svery capable of bringing in the players who support the coach.

  73. Rex may be great, but I remember another defensive coordinator from the Ravens that was also highly sought after….his name Marvin Lewis.

  74. Bookie
Your humor reminds me of my bother-in laws..not very funny…
no way they let this ship sink for 09. It is ready to sail with the proper leader…go get Rex!!! Bring in Rob and either Schott or Callahan run the O. I rather swim than sink 09..

  75. Mangini was supposed to be a smart defensive coach.
Well did he ever show this in the 3 years he was here.
You can blame Sutton but the bottom line is Mangini and the D showed no improvement. Why didn’t Mangini take over the D himself. Because he had no clue.
If you say he gave full control to both coordinators then he deserved to be fired for not realizing that both were not getting the job done.
Give Tanny credit the toughest thing to do is fire a good friend. Mangini was in over his head and would have cost Tanny his job also.
    Give Tanny a chance.
Also stop believing all the crap that is being written. The writers have no clue except in how to create headlines.

  76. Craig-

That’s true, we did score a lot of points this year, at least in some games. Yet, except for a couple of games, it really did seem like we didn’t play up to our potential. Yes, players ultimately must execute the plays, but I really believe that we had the talent on the field to be successful. (And much of the execution problems can be laid on Favre’s arm, especially the last 5 games of the year with those horrible interceptions.) So, it comes back to coaching. We can debate how much of the blame should fall on Mangini as opposed to Schotty if you like, but I think if you blame one, then you should also blame the other. Personally, while I am decidedly ambivalent about Mangini’s release, I still think Mangini has some promise, and wouldn’t be surprised if he does well in Cleveland (or his next coaching stop.) Of the two, I would choose Mangini over Schotty, but that’s just me. I could be wrong.

Yes. You are right to say that I guess I definitely fall into the “have an offensive identity” crowd. I think that the idea of changing your style of play on offense each week based on the opposition is not a winner. Of course, every good team will adapt and make adjustments, especially at halftime, but you can’t make a team that can play smash-mouth one week and then Air-Coryell the next. That’s like playing 3-4 defense one week and 4-3 defense the next. Just impossible. Do what you are built to do best.

Regarding bringing in a veteran QB: I’m open to different ideas. In the end, I’m not the GM. I have a different job. I trust Tannenbaum (more or less) enough to bring in some talent to compete at the QB position. However, I just hope that he doesn’t bring back Favre, (I’ve seen enough of him already,) or some other high-priced veteran. I’m willing to take a shot with the two guys we already have, and spend that free agent money in other ways. Give one of them a chance. (Especially Ratliff, as Clemens already had a chance and failed.)

Finally, regarding Clowney: again, I’m not saying that he should become our go-to guy overnight. But we need a speed receiver, and everyone talks about how good he looks in practice, so why not give him a chance? Give him the opportunity to make some plays. Let’s see how he does. Maybe you’re right. Maybe not. I don’t care so much about his history. People have been wrong before, or maybe he has learned and improved his game. Regardless, there’s only one way to find out.

OK. Time for work. Anyway, I just hope that Tannenbaum makes the right choices for this team. I strongly believe that following the Rex Ryan style of defense and coaching, along with a smash-mouth ground game behind Callahan, could be our best chance for success. But then again, I’m not the GM. I could be wrong. Go Jets!

  77. Craig,

My head agrees with you regarding Clowney, but my heart says:

    - He had a great preseason before he got hurt.

    - He would have had better stats, but Favre couldn’t throw far enough.

    - We desperately need a speedster and I hope it’s him, because I don’t want to spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on a wide receiver.

    - He’s an all around good guy who takes care of his little brother instead of getting drunk and shooting himself in the leg with an unregistered weapon – hahaha!

Please, David Clowney make me right!

  78. I still got my fingers crossed for Ryan Squared also.
I think our D would be phenominal.

But after the QB move this year, tell me its not in their blood to make such a move.

And I thought you could wait another 2 to 3 years?

  79. Steve,

    Great post.

In the future please dumb down your vocab.(ambivalent). I’m still trying to get a GED.

If history is an indicator of what is in store, the right decisions will not be made. Let’s hope though.

  80. bookie
can wait another 2-3 minutes for next year!!!… gotta go 4 am trip to the airport. Heading to Philly which I can not take this week. Fans are a pain in my A$$…Never thought I’d be pulling for the jints but am this week. lesser of 2 evils!!!

    All great posting….
    Go JETS…

  81. DB
I hope you are correct. He had an awesome pre-season.. So did Ratty. Maybe it will translate to bigger and better things for them and the Jets.

  82. Just read that Mr. T and Woody are flying out to meet with Russ Grimm.

Can someone explain to me how Woody would’nt reschedule his vacation to meet with Bill Cowher, but is flying out to meet Russ Grimm. He must like Scottsdale.

  83. Both Clemens and Ratliff suck! They’re much much worse than Pennington. And Pennington sucks.

    5 wins next year

  84. I have three big questions for 2009, can anyone answer them:

    1)What are our 2009 draft picks? 1st round, 2nd round, etc…

If the Saints resign Vilma then we get there 2009 2nd round pick, right? But doesn’t that mean that they then have to give up their 2010 1st round pick to the Giants as part of the Shockey deal? I highly doubt they will sign Vilma in that scenario. If they do no sign Vilma what do we get in return, anything? Or will we end up with nothing, just like with the Dewayne Robertson trade?

    2) If Sanchez and Bradford come out this year, is there any chance we will be able to trade up for them or that one of them will slip down to us?

    3) What is our cap space if release Bowens, Farve, Barrett and Baker?

  85. Hmm, I posted a brilliant analysis of what transpired while D. Rose was away for his benefit and it didn’t appear. Have I been banned? Or is Brett Favre hacking into the system in his ongoing, diabolical plot to destroy everything Jets?

  86. Watching the Fiesta Bowl hoping Jets can grab Ohio State’s James Laurinaitis or Malcolm Jenkins….

    …. WAIT…..

…. TEXAS just scored, but flags on the play?

    …. WAIT ….

Excessive celebration on the offense. Longhorns win.

  87. I wish I could tell which of these posts were based on fact and which were not. I would really like to know one thing: Was Manginni on board with bringing Favre in, and if so, was he not allowed to bench him?

The reason you have to be cautious about playing a rookie QB is because he might play like Favre.
This would be a forgivable offense if this was his first terrible year, but the truth is that Favre has had several terrible years and is the most over rated QB of all time.
I just wish someone would buy the Jets cause ownership and management is a six pack of Choads.

  88. i think we get a minimum of a 3rd for vilma based on how much he played.
i think we get nothing for dwayne.
and if favre retires we get a 7th back from green bay(while losing a 3rd to them)

about the coaches – ryan is the only one who has sustained his success, even thhrough some lean years. the balt d has been in top 6 for the past 4+ years…. mangini did not have that experience before coming here.

i wish mangini luck, he seems to have a great wrk ethic and he’ll probably learn from his mistakes…but he was simply awful with his play-calling and decision making the past 2 years with the seattle game being the worst coaching job i have ever seen, b/w thw horrific 4th down decisions (3 of them) + failure to use leon, etc.

  89. Alex,

The Saints wait ’til free agency begins (February 27, 2009), so they can avoid giving Jets a second rounder and thus Giants a first rounder. After all the trades and coditional picks have settled, Jets will have a selection in rounds 1 -7.

We can use DT, WR, RB and QB (Depends on who you’re talking to). Yet, I’m hoping for an Inside Linebacker to play opposite David Harris or Cornerback opposite Revis or possibly Safety to upgrade Elam.

I like ILB’s James Laurinaitis and Rey Maualuga; CB’s Malcolm Jenkins and Vontae Davis or S Taylor Mays… And possibly a runningback like Knowshon Moreno or Beanie Wells.

Concerning Saleries, I think Favre cost $13 Million against the cap.

  90. What number, 1st round pick do we currently have???

  91. And, Is there a chance we could get Michael Crabtree???

  92. I forgot to add second rounders:

Tannenbaum has been known to trade up (Revis, Harris, Keller). I hope he does again to grab ILB Brandon Spikes projected as a high second rounder.

If Jets stand pat with the 53 overall pick, I really like:

    - CB Victor Harris
    - ILB Dannell Ellerbe

    I kinda like:

    - SS Patrick Chung
    - CB Mike Mickens

Finally, I’d settle for a really fast wide receiver or offensive tackle.

Check out Walter Football.com. They have a really good database of mock drafts.

  93. Marge,

I’d kill for a fast wideout like Crabtree, but Jets pick at #17 and he’s projected to fall in the top-5.

    Check out: http://www.drafttek.com/round12009.asp

    Great Mock Drafts!

  94. Dean B

Thanks, Yeah I guess you’re rite!! No way he’ll be around come pick 17!!! And thanks for the link…..sweeeet!!!

  95. QUESTION….

How did New England find QB’s like Tom Brady and Matt Cassel????????????????????????????

The gave an unknown low draft pick QB a chance to lean on the bench and then gave him a chance to play in the regular season!

In both cases in NE it was because injury. If the injuries didn’t happen then these QB’s are a spec in the tolet after you take a dump!

Give Ratliff, Clements, Ainge and a new drafted QB a chance to battle it out for the starting QB Job in a system they already know. Brian Shott’s real system…. NOT this on the fly simple crap they created just for Favre due to his learning handycap!

Let the spec in our tolet rise to the top!

NO RETRED QB’s allowed on the Jets!!!!!

    Hire Rex Ryan!

  96. Jerry – If the Jets release him, he will have to negotiate a new deal and will not be contractually entitled to the $13m any more. No way anyone will want to give him $13m, agreed, but other teams will definitely have interest at a lower amount. The question may come down to whether Favre is prepared to pay for an amount that low.

Subwayfare – You haven’t been banned, no. You aren’t even on my watchlist! I don’t know what happened to your long post…it must just not have loaded properly. Sorry. If it had been blocked by the spam filter I’d be able to see it and retrieve it for the site, but it isn’t in the queue.

  97. Joe S.,

Good post. I agree, Marty Schottenheimer and Jets QB’s: Clemens, Ratliff and Ainge (and Mangini) have been handcuffed by Favre.

Drop the clipboards and get the party started!!!

PS: I don’t see a need to draft another QB in rounds 1 – 4. Late rounds okay. My opinion we’re stocked with QB tallent already and have too many needs elsewhere.

  98. Whoops! I meant, Brian Schottenheimer.

Probably, won’t matter if he leaves or Favre stays anyway – hahaha!
