Buzz: Brian Schottenheimer Leading Candidate Debunked?

Dan Leberfeld reports on JetsConfidential that the rumor about Brian Schottenheimer being the leading candidate that we thought was false, could very well be just that.

This report is untrue, according to a high ranking team official … Schottenheimer is a candidate, but he’s not the leading candidate. The source tells us it’s too early for anybody to be the leading candidate.

The problem with all these “high ranking officials” is that since by nature they’re anonymous, there’s no way to tell what their motivation is, which we here at TJB and all of us as fans are left to make conclusions based on incomplete data.

I’m no professor of journalism, but from my perspective while some beat reporters like to “break” stories and be the first to have a bit of news, it seems that they can fail to consider (or at least frame the motivation) in their articles why someone would have to give them an anonymous quote in the first place. What ends up happening often in my eyes is that in those instances the reporter just becomes mouthpiece of that motivated anonymous source or faction, rather than determining what was behind the leak and what’s really happening in the first place. I’m not out to fix sports journalism or anything, but if I’ve learned one thing in doing this blog every day for four years, it’s that.

  1. Is it true that Woody Johnson was out of the country right after he fired Mangini and when the Jets were going to interview Cower?? That could be huge and totally irresponsible if thats true

  2. They talked to Cowher’s Representative….

Carton is spinng this! He has selective hearing!

Carton was the Ahole who started the Favre thing this summer! How did that move work out??? A Disaster… Got Mangini Fired!

Why couldn’t Cowher wait a week for Woody to get back from his trip??? Because he doesn’t want the pressure of coaching in the NY market. That was a con job by him so who doesn’t get bashed by NY Jets fans when he comes into NY each weekend!

Hire Rex Ryan already and lets move on!

Spags will FLOP as a HC! Rex Ryan will get the job done!

  3. I have never heard Boomer Esiason say one thing that hasn’t been previously reported on at least ten other media outlets.

And his relentless savaging of the Jets organization is a little tough to stomach, “Oakland and the Jets are the worst coaching situations,” considering how he couldn’t contribute enough to produce one winning season during his Jets tenure.

“Mangini didn’t want a guy who was going to throw 22 interceptions.” Really? But what about Sam Wyche in 1990? Boomer Esiason, 1990: 22 INTs

  4. I think the Schotty leaks were out there if they decided they wanted to wait a year and then go after Cowher. If that’s the game plan, then Schott is the obvious patsy interim coach.

The only thing that worries me about Rex Ryan is why he wasn’t picked to coach the Ravens after Billick was fired. (If his dad is any guide, he was a far better coordinator than HC.)

  5. i think the comments about favre blowing it for the jets are highly overrated. sure, favre led the league in picks, capped with three in the (meaningless) finale against the phish, but how could we expect to be any sort of a factor in the playoffs with the AWFUL defensive displays that we showed throughout the season. sutton was awful, making thigpen, cutler, cassel, hill, seneca, and russell, look like seasoned probowlers. how could mangini, a defensive coach, not take over the playcalling duties after this? unreal. now we are stuck with slow 3-4 personnel (slow lb’s, 0 passrush off the edge) and a likely 4-3 schemed coach.

why is our ownership gambling with another young coach? what has schottenheimer done that warrants a hc position. its consistently asking questions like this year after year that makes the collapse not much of a surprise to me.

  6. subwayfare … lol touche … i think you might be the leader for comment of the month … :)

  7. and now all of us jets fans can breathe a sigh of relief since B-schott won’t be the HC ..now his dad on the other hand would be a nice thing to have ..hell i’d even take B-schott as OC again if marty was in charge

  8. Well thats a good sign, hopefully no more Schottenheimers are talked about for the HC search again.

Rex Ryan should lead the coaching search, I think, followed by Russ Grimm. If the Jets want an awesome defense go with Ryan. A finely tuned offense that runs the ball go with Grimm, but if Callahan decides to stay hopefully as OC, I’d rather go with Ryan.

If Ryan becomes HC, what are the chances of UFA Bart Scott coming to the Jets, solid LB, 82 tackles this year and is only 28, or do the Jets address there ILB needs in the draft?
