Buzz: Is Jagodzinski’s Interview About Something Else?
A lot of media and Jets fans are scratching their head at the interivew of Jeff Jagodzinski. While the big story is whether or not Jags will be fired by Boston College, the more interesting note to me is why would the Jets be considering him in the first place?
Some say it’s a nod to Favre due to their history together in Green Bay and that very well might be the case, but what if Favre doesn’t come back anyway and they hired the guy? Well, what then?
My thought is that Jags has had some success in two key areas:
Offensive Line — Jags worked with the Offensive Line with the revered zone blocking guru Alex Gibbs in Atlanta during Atlanta’s ascendency in the earlier part of this decade. Bill Callahan Jets Assistant Head and Offensive Like Coach is known for his uses the zone-blocking scheme, so there would be some continuity there. Jags worked with Gosder Cherilus from BC to help make him a first rounder in the 2008 NFL Draft.
Quarterback — True, Jags worked with Favre before in Green Bay as the team’s Offensive Coordinator, but he also just developed Matt Ryan into an NFL-ready quarterback. Matt Ryan had a lot to do with it, of course, but there’s something to say for Ryan’s success so quickly during his career, and the naturally curious Tannenbaum might be onto something. So, who’s to say that Jags couldn’t be instrumental in the cementing the future of another young QB at the NFL level? Jags might be just the right head coach for a team that needs a few personnel tweaks with the notable exception of their QB. So could Jags ramp up a pup QB like Kellen Clemens (on whom the Jets recently published a buttressing PR piece on their site), Brett Ratliff or Erik Ainge for the NFL game?
Maybe Jags does get fired by Boston College.
Maybe Jags might not get the head coaching gig for the Jets.
But maybe, just maybe the way things play out, they hire him … as head coach or in some other capacity …

OC???
i’ll leave you all to ponder my conspiracy theories for yourselves … :)
it would be nice to get some of the return investment on clemens ..but doubt it
Good points in the article. forgot he also helped to produce a top tackle in the draft to go along with Ryan. If he has an ability at developing QB and O-lineman sounds like a valueable guy to hire. Dont know much about BC and their effectiveness on offense, but if they were effective on Offense than OC sounds reasonable, or just offensive assistant working with the QB’s and Linemen!
Another question- if we get one of these defensive specialist coaches- rex ryan or spags- wont their defensive coaching skills be hindered- their ability to draw up schemes, blitz packages because they have to focus on the whole team and both sides of the ball!?
This is all rediculous, I hope to god that they are not that big of idiots…………. This guy can come here as the quarterbacks coach and that is it………..
Rex Ryan MUST be Hired!
He is the ONLY guy I am interested in / Happy with for HC of the NY Jets!
Nobody else will work out! All others will FLOP in the NY Market!
Joe S, I have to say you are a very fired up, and definitve guy. Do you really think Rex is the only candidate out there that can succeed here?
Yes… Rex Ryan is the only guy that has had a great defense for an extended period of time. If fact he has always been a staff with an excellent defense! His defensive players love him.
Spags had 2 good seasons. His body of work very limited. If you’re taking a chance with a coodinator then Rex Ryan is the guy!
Plus having a Jet Super Bowl Win in the genes will transfer to a Super Bowl win for Rex Ryan with the Jets!
Let’s just say you bring in Rex or anyone as the HC. Don’t they want to pick their own staff?
I don’t understand this move at all, there must be more to it than meets the eye.
sounds like a guy who could take over Callahans position…
Does that mean Callah ncould get a shot at HC or probly offensive coordinator, and does that mean Schotty gets a etter chacne at HC? Who knows.
Alright Joe, I like Rex too, and maybe he brings his brother along for DC. Who runs the offense? I vote for Callahan. He was great as OC in Oakland, and he did a good job with our O-line this year.
First , after a season of dualing with the BC AD ,Jag has come to the conclusion that he wants back in the NFL. The other side is that when Mangini takes the Cleveland job, Brian Dabol, and possibly Callahan may be goners. Callahan would be given full control of the offense in Cleveland, and working with managements chosen one , Shotty, could be uncomfortable, two big ego’s on the offensive side doesn’t always mix.
Great point by Jet Orange about Dabol and maybe even Callahan joining forces with Mangini. What did the Jets have to lose here? He is a pretty good college coach with ties to the NFL and some top drafted talent. It not their fault his AD is a tool. With that said…… I really want Rex Ryan here. I was hoping we would get him last year as DC when he didnt get the Raven HC job.
LOST IN SPACE
Did you guy’s read this? Cowher doesn’t want to coach in the NY market or for the Jets. He was just fishing to see how much the Jets would offer him. I am sure if he showed any REAL interest in coaching the Jets… Woody would pay him well! Remember Woody has PSL’s to sell and Cowher would create a huge buzz. Cowher was just using the Jets! Then he gives that Blow Hard Interview on WFAN with Carton this morning to win over the Jet Fans….. What a buch of CRAP!!! I don’t believe one word he say’s.
The Jets and Jet Fans deserve a coach who want to be here for reasons other than money!
Did Jets reject Cowher’s money grab?
Views 6147 Comments 144 05:56 AM ET 01.06 Share Print It My T&R As the Jets’ coaching search begins its second week, details are beginning to emerge of the team’s brief flirtation with Bill Cowher and why there were never substantive talks. According to a league source, Cowher’s representatives spoke with the team last Tuesday about the opening. They told Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum that the former Steelers coach was 95 percent sure he was not going to return to coaching. Cowher’s reps then told Tannenbaum that Jets owner Woody Johnson should call him, insinuating if Johnson offered an exorbitant amount of money, Cowher might change his mind. Johnson, who was out of the country, felt a phone conversation with Cowher would just be a money grab by the coach. Instead, Cowher’s people were informed that he would be happy to meet with Cowher when he returned to the country this week. It was then that Cowher withdrew his name from consideration, something that indicated to the Jets he never had serious interest, anyway.

Pete57,
You keep Brian Shott at OC!
The QB’s on the team know Brian’s offense inside & out. (Except Favre of course).
If gives the QB’s the best chance to be sucessfull in 2009!
You bring in a new offensive system and these guy’ don’t have a chance… the Jets would lose 8 to 10 games next season.
Continuity on offense is very important!
Pete57 are you Peter F. in Howell, NJ????
From numerous post I’ve seen people waver away from rex ryan’s abilities, claiming that he has had tons of talent to work with. Well let’s see, in his 4 years at baltimore he has developed and adalius thomas into the beast he is and when adalius left for NE, the defense didn’t loose a beat, this year expecially, the ravens defense has been ravished with injuries not to mention loosing their starting DT/NT, both corners have missed substantial time( and mccallister is still out) and throughout all this, the ravens defense has still ranked in the top 3 in the NFL in both run and pass defense.
How would we look if we had any significant injuries on our defense?…nuff said. Every last player on that baltimore defense has attributed their success to Rex Ryans tutilage and scheming, so what is there to doubt?
Sorry Joe, I am not Pete F. I’m still on the fence about BSchott. Too many miscues in playcalling. The Tenn game, St Louis, and Card games were the only ones where I felt the playcalling was good. So many times we had 3rd or 4th and short and he went with an empty backfield. Need to go playaction there. And with Favre’s arm injured, why is he throwing the ball downfield? The offense lacked any continuity, and fluidity. Now should we vlame Mangini? Was he calling those plays? Favre didn’t audible out of every call. And if I never see Brad Smith come into the game again it will be too soon. Calling that end around to Cotchery in that bad weather against Denver was a horrendous call and it cost us the game.
These Guy’s who waiver on Rex Ryan’s abilities are the same guy’s who wanted Favre to come to NY and said that Chad Pennington was wash up! They know squat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were all proven wrong!
Rex Ryans abilities are very strong! Every defense that he coached on did very well! Consistantly well for years!
Rex Ryan =’s a Super Bowl for the Jets within 3 years!
These Guy’s will be proven wrong again!
Also, 5 minutes into the Seattle game I said, all we have to do is run the ball every play and we will win. We would’ve. I think Schotty just out thinks himself.
And Joe. S
….Good points, I’ve been saying the same thing. I kno schott tends to raise eyebrows every now and then, but he’s still developing and teetering with the offfensive talent on the team. Plus you can’t say he hasn’t shown some spark and game preperation(tennesse game). And most importantly, its tough to throw your young qb into an entirely different offense, after getting achlimated to the plays and talent he has practiced with. Look what happened with Zorn and the skins, campbell looked lost at the seaons start. I say schotti just needs to become more divers and less predictable with the personell he throws out on the field.
Pete57, you have to remember that this 2008 Jet offense was put together on the fly after Favre was dumped in Brian’s lap!
The # of plays that Favre understood was very limited! This why the offense was so predictable this season. Very little motion, they never ran the no-huddle offense!
Go back to 2006 to see the real Brian Schott offense! In 2007 the offinsive line was a disaster which hurt everything last season.
Way off topic, I know the Jets probably won’t draft a QB and most regulars know that I would draft QB’s for size and arm strength (and I’d like to see the ability to complete 60% of passes, but it’s not a litmus test, and 2-1 TDs to INTs (at least) are good too)…check out this clip of Josh Freeman:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1VogoHOrow
WOW!!!
I’d rather draft a running back in beanie wells, I think the jets have a good chance to get him.
I was thinking 4th round for Freeman, who will probably stay in college given the other prospects out there. There’s no sense in the Jets even thinking about a QB until the 4th round with KC, Ratliff and Ainge around. I just thought Freeman’s throw was incredible and he’s mobile. He could be a guy who wows the scouts at the Combine like Flacco did…but it’s probably not a great time for QBs to come out with Stafford, Bradford and Sanchez. I’ll say this much, Freeman has a ton of raw talent, very few QBs anywhere can throw 60 yards on the run effortlessly.
Mike Vick could
rb’s and qb’s should only be drafted in 3rd round or later, unless there is a chance to take an adrian peterson or jay cutler type player. guys with once in a generation talent. otherwise, top picks should be spent on positions that are less hit or miss like lineman and linebackers–these positions cost a lot less too. (plus we still need a franchise LT to replace d’bust . . .)
i might be willing to give schott one season with a real o-line and a qb who knows his system.
that’s pretty much the other side of the coin that makes me ok with firing mangini–he had this year with his 3-4 personnel, mostly healthy, and he proved not to be a great defensive genius. he also makes some really stubborn decisions about the db’s–that series where he had ty law covering randy moss one on one without a bump at the line was particularly damning.
short of hiring rex ryan, anyone have insight about potential DC who would keep a 3-4 in place?
He had one play where Law didn’t bump Moss and that was the touchdown.
Jay Cutler is more like a once in every 3 years player not a life time.
Peterson hasn’t broke the 2,000 yard mark and led the league in non QB fumbles.
Draft the BPA regardless of position. Unless you can fill a greater need.
BTW Dbrickshaw only gave up 2 sacks this year. Not very bust like.
JAAG, not sure Vick had the same ability to throw deep, in stride and on the run like Freeman did in the clip or like Cutler does now. No doubt Vick has the arm strength. Plus, Vick’s too short to be a pocket passer and his release wasn’t quick. That’s why Vick is saying that he’s coming back to the NFL as a WR. Freeman is over 6-5, so he’s a little like Flacco, but with better mobility (Flacco, on the other hand was way more accurate and threw fewer picks, albeit against lesser competition). Also, what I liked about Freeman is that he was looking to pass first, something Vick would never have done. Freeman’s just a prospect, however, not a first day guy, unless he comes out and blows everyone away at the Combine, which is possible.
I don’t disagree with all the knocks on Vick and Freeman looks good, but Vick could throw 60 with a flick of his wrist. I watched him do it on the run he just couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. Vicks HS film was amazing because he was smaller, but he could just whip the ball like it was nothing. He is also an idiot.
I agree with JAGG, Flacco has every bit as much raw ability as Cutler and he’s taller and stronger. Ryan, who doesn’t have Cutler’s raw ability, just finished the best rookie season in NFL history. So, I’m not sure that Cutler’s all that unique.
JAGG, I tried to find Vick highlights and the only throw on the run I saw was about a 30 yarder, which was wobbly. I know he had great arm strength, I just don’t recall him flicking it 60 yards on the run to his opposite side with any pace on the ball. For a brief period, Vick was the most exciting player in football since Barry Sanders, but because of his running ability…he was a joke as a QB. I may be old school, but the best QB for throwing deep and accurately on the run that I’ve ever seen was Elway…nobody has been even close since him.
Jags is interviewing for the OC job, really, and that’s assuming they give the HC job to Schotty.
I’m sort of okay with Schott and Callahan staying in their current jobs, depending on who gets brought in as the new HC (Rex Ryan or Spags).
Unless they have a no-brainer lined up for DC, I don’t see Schott as a HC, with Callahan or Jags as OC. That’s not an upgrade in my opinion.
(plus we still need a franchise LT to replace d’bust . . .)
You have to be kidding, right?
Vick was so exciting when he first came into the league. He’d make a couple of sensational throws but then the dumbest throw you ever saw to end a drive. I grew to hate watching him play. I’d like to see him try out as a wide receiver (not with the Jets), but (even though he’ll have been working out in prison), I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t in shape.
I like Freeman too. I think he should take another year in school and then could be a day one pick. Don’t be so sure that Stafford and Sanchez are coming out either.
Sackdance99,
What about Mark Sanchez? I’m not sure if he announced he’ll be coming out this year, but he’d be someone I’d be interested in. He has pretty good size at 6-3 and he can run. He completed 66% of his passes this season, and had a monster game against Penn, not to mention 34 TD’s vs 10 ints for the year.
The jets for Whatever reason seem to be sold, on Schott… Jag would seem to be a backup to Callahan or Dabol , if Mangini can wrestle of one or both of those guys away….This is mean but real, this could merely a way that Tannenbaum brown noses his boss. Tanny shows support for keeping on Favre, by bringing in one of his former coaches. Sell ,sell, sell those PSL’s
