Link: Calvin Pace Would Appreciate Your Culinary Input
Calvin Pace is back on his Yardbarker blog and today asked the Yardies for some advice on where to eat in New York City.
Ok yardies….aside from football i really enjoy eating out especially in Nyc im not a food critic by any means but i do like to sample different types of food from different ethnicities. hopefully you guys enjoy a good meal also…what i need from you guys is just suggestions of places that you have been to in new york or atlanta and it can be any type of food….thanks
I offered Calvin some standard suggestions, but I’m sure he’d love to hear some thoughts from the rest of you. Calvin did ask for Super Bowl predictions as well and did note that “… i was very impressed with baltimore especially their offense and everybody knows what their defense brings to the table.”
We sure do know what that defense brings. For Calvin’s sake, let’s hope this offseason brings a heaping helping of exotic 3-4 blitzes from a rather rotund defensive coordinator in Baltimore.

Great places to eat in the theater district. Mid to high end in price Giovanni’s (I think its on 55th street close to 5th) nice private room upstairs for 20-30 people.
Mid to low end in price, voted “best Pizza in the US” Johns Pizza (on 54th or 55th, can’t remember). Johns is in an old church building, thin crust pizza, popular with the theater crowd, very nice.
SB pick Ravens
You know BBQ southern style, but now you’re here. Try Korean BBQ- anywhere on 32nd street bet. 5th and B’way that is drawing a good crowd will do. OR go to the West Village to my fave Italian rest, Piccolo Angelo. Make a reservation a week in advance. Not expensive, but exceptional food.
Enjoy
Adam
Calvin,
I think that I am in a great position to offer you some suggestions — I’ve been working in the restaurant business for years. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, and I just moved back to Manhattan after living in Atlanta for 10 years, so I know some great places in Atlanta and New York.
In Atlanta, my favorite regular joints were Fritti and Sotto Sotto on Highland Avenue. They are right next to eachother and are owned by the same guy, Ricardo Ullio, who is from Milan. Sotto Sotto is the more formal of the two places, but it’s still a casual neighborhood place. The pastas are whole made and the risottos are great. Also, all the main course items here are always top quality: the whole roasted fish, the duck, and the steak. The desserts are also really great…traditional Italian dessest. One is called a Torta di Mandorla, or Almond Torte, which Is really an Italian version of a pecan pie, but with almonds instead…great. Fritti is more know for its pizza, and I can tell you after being in Italy that it is as good and better than some of the pizza that I’ve had there. You have to check both of those places out when you are in ATL.
I also like this spot called Restaurant Eugene in Buckhead on Peachtree Road. There’s also another place directly across from it (I can’t remember the name) that is owned by the same people. The whole menu is small plates, so you can taste a lot of different things. Everything here is great!
Ecco in midtown on Cypress Street is good too. It’s a little more of a “scene,” so if you want something quite, this is not your place. It’s a mediterranean place.
I also like Hong Kong Harbor on Cheshire Bridge Road for authentic Chinese food from Hing King…a lot of seafood…oysters in black bean sauce, dungenous crab, salt and pepper calamari, hong kong wonton soup (with shrimp wontons). Good place, but you go for the food not the atmosphere. It’s clean but boring.
In New York, I like Five Points on Great Jones Street. The place is beautiful and the food is very good. Everything is always clean and fresh tasting…a lot of good seafood dishes.
Chef Joel, who used to run his own restaurant in Atlanta, is now at the Oak Room at the Plaza. I haven’t been there, but his place in Atlanta was sick, so it’s probably a good bet for French.
This Japanese place called Seuen (I’m not sure about the spelling) on Prince St. and 6th Ave. in Soho is excellent. It’s all fish and vegetarian. There is always a specials board which is great. It’s been there for many years. Definitely a good bet for healthy food during the season.
As you can tell, I love food and I love to go out to eat. In Atlanta, my buddy Cynthia, who was a pastry chef, was my dining buddy. It would be cool to have someone to go out with in NY every once in a while appreciates good food. Hit me up if you are interested: thenewyorkclassic@yahoo.com.
