News: Jagodzinski Fired By BC
In “names I can’t wait to stop typing” news, it seems that Coach Jeff Jagodzinski has in fact been fired by Boston College, reports the Boston Herald.
According to a source, BC’s athletic director Gene DeFilippo and Jagodzinski met face to face earlier today and DeFilippo fired the coach. The school announced that there will be a 3 p.m. press conference on the matter at BC today … [Jagodzinski] might have some options with the Seattle Seahawks if he is passed over in New York.
Jagodzinski worked with new Seattle coach Jim Mora Jr. when in Atlanta and he also coached quarterback Matt Hasselbeck when he was the offensive coordinator at BC.
Seattle does sound like his most likely next stop, but I’m still holding out hope that he might get an offer to coach the Jets in some form or fashion depending on how severely Mangini raids the staff …
Hope you enjoyed your two years of relevancy, BC … back to the land of the unranked for you …

Bad, bad job by BC. I get that Jags might not have handled the situation correctly, but this is a bad move for the BC program. The guy who is credited with helping Matt Ryan turn into a stud is gone and the AD looks like a hothead who is not going to allow his headcoaches the opportunity to better their careers (good luck attracting top tier coaches).
Look for a lot of raids on their recruiting class.
both coach Jags and the BC organization coincidentally pulled a “jets” stunt as far as their decision making…..jumping out the window with no parachute, making a decision with no confidence on where your gonna end up and having no back up plan. its funny how all are related in these stories. lol
Yeeea! What idiots. Ultimately, Jags was right though. Don’t tell a man who he can or can not talk to. WHat ind of mess is that? He had that defense keyed up too. I mean Mark Herzlich, Robert Francois? I’m hoping the Jets take a look at those guys.
BC played themselves.
you guys have no clue what you’re talking about. first to the original post – bc has been ranked pretty much every season for the past decade. tom o’brien (whom i despise) built the program to where it is now, recruited ryan, and developed him for 4 years. jags got the job and was able to benefit from an extremely intelligent QB, which made jags look great. if you actually followed BC you would know that matt ryan was at his best when he was calling his own plays in the 2 minute drill. look at the virginia tech game last season when the team couldn’t score for 58 minutes, then they let ryan run his own plays for 2 drives, BC scores on both and wins the game.
i think you’re all giving jags too much credit here. and the only reason bc was good this year was because the defense was unbelievable – and guess what, that’s because of the defense coordinator (frank spaziani), not jags.
to the original post, bc is as relevant now as they were 5 years ago – they’re a perennially #20-30 in the country.
oh and the comment about their recruiting class being raided — if you take a look at who has signed with them, you’ll see there’s no one. jags was a terrible recruiter (part of the reason he was looking for nfl jobs), and the current class is ranked lower than duke’s at the moment. so good riddance to a terrible college coach (i have no doubt he has talent – but it’s not suited for building/maintaining a program at the college level).
that said, it wouldn’t be terrible for the jets to get him in some capacity, but it better not be for the sole purpose of keeping favre here.
As both a Jets fan and BC alum, I’m not sure how I feel about this-although thanks for the lack of faith in our program Brian…
For the record though, I do believe that DeFilippo should have eaten crow and took Jags back. Jags is a good coach and won’t have a problem finding work. I just sincerely hope it’s in the NFL for fear of this coming back to haunt BC
do your homework,
you make some good points. i still think the problem is with perception, this reflects poorly on the program and will hurt in its search for a new coach (unless the plan is to go to spaz which would be odd since they could have made him coach when obrien left) and recruits–though your point is well taken that jags has not exactly loaded up with blue chippers.
I don’t know if this guy can be our HC, because it seems like Rex Ryan is in the lead, but maybe the jets can make him our new OC
JMo – I too am a BC alum and jets fan, but I think DeFilippo made the right move. Jags was going to be looking to make the jump back the NFL every year, and if he truly hated recruiting as has been reported, then the program is better off without him. And it’s better to make the move now than wait it out and hope he’ll have a change of heart. The problem, which Liam stated and I agree with, is perception. The school takes a big hit from everyone except for other AD’s who agree with DeFilippo but won’t say so publicly. I agree BC will have a tougher time finding a coach because it does appear the school thinks they’re higher up in the pecking order than they truly are. Sorry I know this is a Jets blog and this is only marginally related to the Jets – just didn’t want the alma mater to take too much of a beating.
The amazing thing about all of this is that Brett Favre cost both my football teams their head coach (not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing).
Doesn’t Mangini need a job, and as a HC at that, before he can raid anyone?
I stand corrected:
Kokinis’ interview on hold, but Mangini appears to be the next head coach

Yea, I expected this, Mangini getting a job before the Jets find a HC, which is kinda embarrassing, we fired him the very next day we got kicked out of the playoffs, it’s like the decision was made before hand, but I still support going in another direction, but I also will maintain my belief that if Mangini stayed for another 4 years we could have gone to the SB with the right QB
(Last BC related comment, I promise)
DYH – I agree that Jags was inevitably going to make the jump, I was just lamenting because his departure, particularly in this way, will (and already has) affect recruiting. (rivals.com reporting a 4-star WR from Del. already having second thoughts).
With that said, I would love to see Jags on the Jets’ staff next year, particularly as an OL coach/Asst HC if Mangini takes Callahan to Cleveland with him next season.
I’m just not sure its worth it at the cost of keeping #4 around for one more year…
I think I might not mind if “…Magini raids our staff.”
nyckage, Mangini signed. Since Jim Brown hung it up, the Browns have been as cursed a franchise as the Jets. Hiring a guy who was 23-25 and couldn’t make the playoffs with 7 Pro Bowlers so quickly says a lot more about the dysfunctional Browns franchise. Also, Mangini is stepping right into a buzzsaw of a QB controversy. Since the other guy will be traded away, if his choice is incorrect (and he certainly hasn’t shown any ability to develop a QB), the Browns franchise will, yet again, need to draft a QB. I’m not sold on Brady Quinn, who hasn’t shown that he can throw deep, or Derek Anderson, who has only shown that he can throw deep. Both guys are question marks and need a lot of coaching up. Mangini will face a ton of pressure to trade/dump Anderson. As things usually go with the Browns franchise, that will probably be the wrong move.
Well, It’s official. Mangini is coaching the Browns next year.
I’m with you, md…take the whole bunch of ‘em…
Bubby;
Now that Mangini was immediately hired by the browns, I’m sure that the loser Jet fans that wanted him fired after our first couple of losses will have nothing but nice things to say about him. Now it’s a race to see which team, Jets or Browns, will reach th\e playoffs first. I guarantee it will be the browns. Too bad he didn’t go to a team in our conference to show all these knuckleheads how “BAD” of a coach he is.
Correction: Our division, not conference
For the record, hank, I would’ve preferred that we kept Eric and canned the two coordinators, but my suspicion is that that’s what Woody and Mike T. wanted too, but Eric wouldn’t do it…so he took the fall. Now I’ve got NO PROOF of this, but the way it all went down so swiftly leads me to believe that this scenario could’ve happened…
i wanted magani out but i have a bad feeling about this.
Well Mangini was run out of NY….
Now he will get the Browns into the playoffs as early as next season.
What will you all say then???? What?
Rex Ryan for HC of the NY Jets!
I don’t think any rational fan thought Manigi was bad, hank. I was definitely a bit sad to see him go, but I also realize that no matter how much the rational fan wanted him to stay, it was pretty inevitable he was leaving. Again, it’s just how it works. Not just in the NFL, but all sports. Coaches are the first to be blamed and the first to go.
Anyways, best to luck to him in Cleveland. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they made it to the playoffs before us. They had a solid season last year, although their division certainly isn’t any easier than ours.
It will be hard for Mangini with an unproven QB, dropsy Edwards at receiver, and little to no defense. I’m wishing him the best, as long as he doesn’t beat us in the playoffs…
I think the odds that Mangini succeeds in Cleveland are marginally higher than that whatever coach we bring in succeeds here. Mangini has three years worth of experience and unquestionably left the team in much better shape than he inherited it. He’s a young, smart coach, and he’s going to a team with a lot of key positions already in place- young QB, a stud LT, a #1 WR, a #1 CB and a pass rusher.
If I were a Browns fan, I would be thoroughly satisfied with the choice.
Seanmac, I wouldn’t be happy if I were a browns fan because essentially they just traded one defensive-minded, unemotional coach for another. They basically just got a younger version of Crennel (who I’m hearing will stay on as D-coordinator- won’t that be awkward?)
Bubby:
I’s a bit cnvoluted to think that our ownership wanted our two coordinators fired then fire mangini and offer one of them his Job. But then again, this is par for the way this organization thinks, and some fans too.!!
Mel,
So? I don’t think Romeo Crennel was necessarily a bad coach, and I don’t think Mangini is a bad coach, either. Not at all. Emotion and winning football games have nothing to do with each other. The Browns had a bad year- as someone who wrote the Browns preview chapter for PFP, I can tell you that it was highly likely that the Browns were going to have a bad year for a variety of reasons. We had them pegged at 6-10; unfortunately, the owner didn’t get the memo, and he responded by firing a good GM and a competent coach. (Sounds suspiciously like our situation, minus the GM bit, come to think of it.)
