Adam Schefter Guess on Next Head Coach
On the way to work I listened to Adam Schefter, who was in WEEI in Boston this morning. During the interview with the hosts John Dennis and Gerry Callahan, he said that he thinks that the next coach of the Jets will be one of two people. “I think that the next head coach for the Jets will be Brian Schottenheimer or Steve Spagnulo.”
Schefter also talked with D&C on Jeff Jagodzinski, saying “I got an email from an Assistant GM that I trust and he said. ‘If I was ever a GM that would be my #1 coach to hire.’ From all the people I’ve spoken to [agents, GMs, coaches] in three different world[views] what I hear is “character issues.”
It seems like that the AD at Boston College must have had some run-ins previous with Jags, and this was probably the last straw.

Ugh, hopefully he is wrong about both of these guys. I may be wrong but I do not think Spags or Schotty will be a HC that can take a team to a Superbowl. Schotty caved into Favres liking this year and look where the team went. Spags inherited a tremendous amount of talent on the D-line from the Giants, grant it he got the best out of them, but I would like to see what he did with lesser for more than 2 years. Lets see how the Giants defense performs against the red hot Eagles this weekend and the rest of the playoffs, that maybe the true test.
swizzle,
Spags lost Osi and Strahan. He needed to move players and change schemes based on the personnel. The defense didn’t miss a beat and was just as good this year as last year. Tuck is battling injury as well.
If Brian Schottenheimer is our next coach I am quitting being a jets fan
I dont understand how a guy who runs shotgun 5 out of 5 times on 3rd and short on the last day of the season can get a shot at being a HC? If his excuse was, “i had to change my plan because of Favre?” then i dont want that guy to be a head coach.
Shotty? Seriously? Someone shoot me and put me out of my misery now!!! And I firmly believe that adjusting his offense to accommodate Favre is an excuse. I’m pretty sure that Favre would not choose to throw the deep ball on 3rd and freaking 1 or 2!!!! 5 out of 5 times…like Bilal says!
Rex Ryan WILL be who the Jets HIRE…..
If they Don’t…. I am DONE as a Jet Fan and Season Ticket holder!
Please GOD let Schefter be wrong (as usual). How can a guy 99% of the posters on this blog don’t even want back as OC be a viable candidate for Head Coach?
NY JETS = LOST IN SPACE
This is distressing. Next they will say Favre is coming back.
Maybe they will hire Shotty and then fire him next year to get Holgrin or Cowher?
Through this we must remember that orchestrating a great offensive or defensive scheme or season does not qualify someone to be the CEO of a footbal team. Many of the best head coaches were not offensive or defensive gurus, but came in a lead a football team. I know we can only judge Rex Ryan and Spagnolo by the performance of their units, but Tannenbaum and Johnson hopefully will be looking for a guy that can lead 53 guys and however many coaches through ups and downs, and what has become a 12 month, 24/7 football season.
There is a lot of chatter about Schotty today for some reason, heard a report on NFL radio on Sirius this morning that he was a leading candidate. I cant imagine who in the right mind would think he is qualified to become a head coach. Is woody looking for a coach who cant make obvious adjustments to what a defense is giving him, constantly overthinks himself and doesnt know how to play with the personnel given to him (see 2007 and now 08 as examples)???? For all of the talk about trying to sell PSLs, wouldnt this be the nail in the coffin for that? I wish we could fire the owner.
I want Rex Ryan but I can certainly live with Spags and Jags. Has a nice ring to it.
why would they hire a bland OC for HC ..doesn’t make sense ..especially since a lot of fans aren’t happy with the playcalling as is
i mean i understand spags being the man and believe me if he’s not a giant coach in ‘09 i hope he’s at least a jets coach but B-schott is unpopular at the moment
it just sounds like tannenbaum wants a guy he can better control in the drivers seat ..which of course sucks for us and points more to the fact that tannenbaum should have been fired with or instead of mangini .
i just hope we don’t go back into another lull period were the team continues to have one lackluster season after another because right now the team has a lot of talent and promise and it’d be a shame to squander it so that a GM can continue having his power trip ..matt millen style
razor - spags and jags ..lol thats awesome
I understand that it hurts Schotty’s credibility to allow Favre to run the offense, but is it really his fault? The way things have developed the past few weeks, it seems to me that Woody Johnson has been the biggest supporter of Favre, even against the wishes of people in the organization. Isn’t it possible (maybe even probable) that Johnson told Schotty to not be as hard as Favre and to let him be himself on offense?
I believe (and this pure speculation) that Johnson told Schotty to use kid gloves with Favre, and if he did, he would be guaranteed AT LEAST the OC position, and possibly the HC position if Mangini were to mess up…which he did in a few ways, at least in Johnson’s perspective.
If what I speculated is true, then Schotty would be ideal for Johnson who appears to have begun taking a little more of a hands-on approach with the organization, even if he uses Tannenbaum as his mouthpiece. Schotty would be ideal because he would tow the company line, which is what Johnson probably wants considering the importance of the new stadium opening.
With that said, Schotty has done nothing to merit a HC position. I would not mind having him as an OC again, as long as he starts running the ball more on 3rd and short. I’m willing to say that some of those passes on 3rd were Favre audibles. Remember how after the Cardinals game, everybody was talking about Favres repoire with WR’s, and how he was calling successful audibles? Say Schottenheimer did call a rush on 3rd and short, would it be too far-fetched to say that Favre would call an audible to a pass without repercussions?
Again, I’m mostly speculated, but I do think Schottenheimer has potential to be a successful OC again in the right situation, and maybe in the future a HC. And if we did hire him, you give me more time than Mangini…3 years for a new HC with streaks of success is absurd.
Schott is the last person I want to be HC. I want Rex Ryan if Shanahan isn’t available. 3rd choice would be Spags.
Bassett are you going to run a contaest on how long Mangenius lasts in Cleveland??
The only thing good I can see coming from hiring Schotty as HC is that he WON’T be our OC.
But it makes me wonder about Sutton then. How do they get along? Because, while I respect Bob Sutton, I think he’s done a very poor job as our DC. Regardless of who our next HC is, I’d like to see new coordinators - with the exception of Mike Westhoff, who rocks.
the jets will lose 1 season ticket holder and a die hard fan if they hire schott
The Jets will probably end up hiring Jags in some capacity because they feel bad for what happened. And no one knows who our next HC will be at this point, including Tanny and Woody. Haven’t we all learned that these reporters mess up trying to beat everyone else to the punch?
I often talk about the Peter Principle in regard to position coaches who sucked as head coaches still being decent options as position coaches because they must have been competent in that role to get the HC job in the first place. The Peter Principle says you get promoted to a level at which you can be imcompetent.
A Schott HC hire sounds more like the Dilbert Principle: The Dilbert Principle claims that incompetent employees are intentionally promoted to prevent them from doing harm (such as reducing product quality, offending customers, offending employees, etc.)…and then they can bring in some competent coordinators!
No? Oh, alright then.
i hope tanny and woody are asking schotty how leon washington earned the well-deserved nickname i heard on tv, “the best player his own team never heard of.”
understanding that the capable t. jones is ahead of him, there’s still no excuse for leon to have multiple games where his offensive role was basically nonexistent.
this is to say nothing of schotty’s frequent disdain for running backs in the backfield on 3rd and short.
Holy crap why on earth would they hire shotts. the only logic i could think of is to hire him for 1 year and then hire Cowher just in time for the new stadium. Brilliant business move by Woody, horrible football move
If they hire Schottenheimer as the next HC, I am officially done as a Jet fan.
If they want a place holder until next year, then they should have kept Mangini, that would have killed 2 birds with one stone. They could have seen how he responded to this years collapse while keeping some continuity, and if it didn’t work out then fire him and hire Cowher.
i dont believe these reporters didnt a couple days ago they had there tiers and shott was on the second teir it just talk
Agreed, if Schotty is hired as the next HC….I’m done following and supporting this team as a fan. As Popeye used to say…
” I can only Stanz so much, and I can’t stanz no more…”
Wow. Just… wow. I can understand Spagnuolo, but Schotty? Really?
Here’s a list of coaches I’d rather have than Brian Schottenheimer:
Rex Ryan, Russ Grimm, Steve Spagnuolo, Jeff Jagodzinski, Leslie Frazier, Brian Billick, Eric Mangini, Herm Edwards, Pete Carroll, Al Groh, Rich Kotite
btw, I was just kidding about the last 2, but I actually would rather have Edwards or Carroll back
i might be tossing my green jersey if this story has any relevance
steve you are killing me al groh was 9 and 7 his first and only year al would have done somthing special here great leader was one of his strongest traits he was thrown out of town for all the wrong reasons ive been jet fan for a very long time and this time around it loocks bad the only one should be cohwer think about it from all the names can you really sit there and say you see a future with any off the guys the jets are looking at this is NY YORK the capital of the freakin world and thatsyour list you gotta be kidding me right now on paper we have a lot of probowlers (past and present still with us) Cohwer is parcells money by that bitch now hit him with everything last year you spent what 140 million plus on players now pay him what ever it takes we got alot of the best now gives a chouch that knows how to coach the best
