Link: Read At Your Own Risk

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk writes for The Sporting News his encapsulation of the Jets 2008 season. It’s not pretty or polite, but it’s fair to say it’s an interesting read … if you are a masochist. For sake of sparing many blood vessels in many loyal readers heads we’ll spare you a taste on this one if you don’t want to go looking for trouble yourself.

Frankly, when I read most of what Florio writes about the Jets, it’s almost as if he’s sexually aroused by the Jets failures, which is pretty annoying. I truly believe Florio only source of nourishment is the woes of the Jets.

  1. He hit us in the heart right there, but i have to say I agree with the guy, how can you expect a team to make the playoffs if you can’t beat a Pats team without Brady and a QB who has not started since HS and your at home

But I do disagree with the part where he thinks the Phins are gonna be better next year, look at history the year after Chad has a great year his team then has a bad season, and then has a good season, and repeats this process all over again, it’s not always his fault though, some of the reason was because of injuries, and 2006 I don’t know what happened

  2. Oh , if you have a weak heart don’t read the article

  3. Nothing we all did not know!!!….Penny & the Finns will not be any better next year. Great guy who last week played like we had seen him before.

Time to move on. Jets have a good group so whoever comes in will start with a decent team and a young QB..

  4. The guy does sound like an a$$, but he’s right on almost all counts except for Jinx being soft. Jinx ain’t soft.

  5. Florio was also the guy that was speculating that Mangini would never be able to be employed after the spy-gate thing. Guess he was on the money (and not trying to agitate) with those comments either, huh?

  6. It was touching.

  7. I hate to say it, but he’s completely and totally right .

  8. Seemed fine to me.
Then again, I was against the Favre trade from the beginning… to me there was never a football reason, to bring Favre here.
It was all for marketing, and publicity.
I have the same sense about Mangini being fired… it wasn’t about football, unless Woody had a plan up his sleeve.
Like Cowher, or Holmgren lined up.
    Nope.
Now I have to keep reading about Schott Jr, as a possibility,
while Mangini probably couldn’t be happier, than to get away from Woody.
Oooooops… sorry for the stream-of-consciousness, changin’ the subject thing.
All in all, what Florio said, is kinda what I expected to happen, when the Favre talk started.
So, my heart didn’t even skip a beat reading the obvious.
Now, I’m praying Woody’s not afraid to hire Rex… but somehow I think Woody’s change of direction will be Schott Jr (gag).

  9. That did hurt. I have gotten so caught up in Favre Mania that I still am not convinced he was main reason we floundered. Damn you Brett and your likeable, aww shucks persona.

  10. After teams watch the baltimore vs miami game film in the offseason they will learn how to shut down the WILDCAT formation next year and miami will once again fall to the bottom of the AFC…Chad will not see a playoff game next season except from his couch…..

  11. The article didn’t bother me as it was all the same rehashed blah, blah, blah, from every other writer who feeds his superiority complex by writing negatively about the Jets.

And once he included this line his credibility was shot with me,” But what’s the downside of cutting a long-time starting quarterback a month before the start of the regular season?”

A long time starter implies, to me, a durable QB who plays at a consistently high level for 16 games every season, for several season in a row.

The only real downside to this year was not getting Clemens a full season to determine once and for all whether he’d be quality starter. But I suspect the CS and FO had already come to a consensus on that.

If the Jets hire a solid defensive coach like Ryan, he’ll probably be able to win with the players on the roster and maybe even develop a young QB like Ratliff or someone in the draft or currently on another team’s roster. We may actually be in a better position than we would have been had the season not gone exactly like it did.

  12. Nothing really hurts anymore after enduring the last 5 weeks of the season… On the article… the guy speaks the truth.. if woody wants to sell PSLs then the coach to get is Rex Ryan… Not one *real* Jets fan wants Brian Schott in balls… Got get Rex a man who still has a sack…

  13. Sounds to me like all he’s saying is the Jets stink and it’s all Favre’s fault, but of course he had to pad it with a full season recap so it wouldn’t seem like he’s plagurizing every other Jets-related article that’s been written since the end of the season. I’m not trying to start up the argument again, just pointing out that this is the same exact story we’ve heard over and over and over, and doesn’t really qualify as “news”

  14. it’s funny but i can say that, Wayne Huzuinga proves that an owner that knows nothing about football can be successful if he’s willing to put ego aside and let a real football person like Parcells do the duty.

after all, winning sells the most ticks and jerseys.

  15. We’re bringing back 6 pro-bowlers, right?

  16. Hangar,

I have news for you Mangini is going to turn the Browns franchise around faster than you think. The dolphins will be better next year when they receive help on the offensive and defensive lines and pennington has another year under the dolphins playbook. It won’t be like 2007 for us. Who do we have now that can compete against pennington and likely brady if he is healthy and if one of the two quarterbacks (clemens or ratliff especially ratliff) becomes a product of the system (like cassel) how far will the team take him? Lets just hope we find a head coach who will take full control of the team and eliminates any obstacles in the clubhouse. Whoever he is i he is nheriting Mangini’s team and must play with Mangini’s toys. He needs to establish a grueling training camp and “team and player bonding” blueprint that made us somewhat successful in 2006.

  17. Question for everyone,

Mangini has had some success against his former team the Patriots. Now that he is out of our division how do we face someone who potentially might knock us out of the playoffs later?

We have let a couple of pieces fall (pennington and mangini) to our opponents’ hands. No question that mangini is in a division that is just as difficult or more difficult than our division but he has all the motivation in the world. So what will stop him or more importantly he may stop us from getting to level that we want to go to.

  18. I don’t worry about letting Mangini go in conference. Nothing you can do about coaches. Getting a pick for Herm was the exception, not the rule.

Pennington, hey, we should have gotten something for him. No doubt about that. We were in a rush to get rid of him, but I’m disappointed we couldn’t force him out of the division.

By the way, I wrote a massive article, grading the Jets position by position.

    Check it out.

  19. I’ve been a Jets fan since the NY Titan days.. and suffered through the past 40 years..and I gotta say I agree wholeheartedly with Florio’s commentary..a nd I’ll take it a few steps further…I was against the Favre hire from the gitgo..my friends couldn’t understand why I wasn’t all hyped up about it ..and it’s because there’s no future in ANY 39 year old QB..frankly I would have been more satisfied going say 6 and 10 with Ratliff if it provided the kid his initation year and a foundation of experience to build on in subsequent years..and I never could stand Mangini..he’s a putz and his bland non emotional persona has permeated the players..they play flat..hey..football requires some emotion..it ain’t all just X’s and O’s..so right on Mr. Florio..Right On!

  20. Is this name change to “No favre no problem” going to be a permanent thing or will you revert back to Fonzie if he leaves?

  21. All Jets fans have thought and read the same dumb article the last 2 weeks. Did Florio cut and paste the Daily News and post stories??The Favre trade was a failure but it was worth the risk. Chad had taken us as far as he could (proof was confirmed with his showing against Baltimore) and we needed a change.

His losing to the Pats should have been a sign comment is a reach and absurd. Favre had been here about a month and Cassell turned out better than expected. Plus Favre played his best game against the Pats on the road later anyway.

Its very easy to pile on but these same idiots were handing the jets the 2 seed after we whipped the Titans so who gives a crap!!

  22. Glad to see that many of you are now …

    officially …

    BULLETPROOF!!!

    :)

  23. First thing first Woody, GET RID OF SCHOTTY his system does not work, he is not his father and does not deserve that respect, then look at the statistics, Favre has hit and miss years all throughout his career, let him mend physically and mentally, then draft a Donald Driver type of receiver one who can get separation unlike the ones we currently have now, keep JC or LC not both, they are both possession WR’s, trade B. Smith and work Clowney in, place VG on DE he is not an LB, the guy is a freak of nature and will adjust to the game in the trenches he cannot play in space, draft a another DB and give it a go for next year.

  24. Bent-

Your comment wasn’t necessary to the even slightly attentive reader.

  25. How can you not enjoy an article that has lines like “Favre decided to grant unto the citizens of New York his unparalleled football skills,” and “the schedule was about to get softer than Kris Jenkins abdomen”? I’m already a pessimist by virtue of being a Jets fan, but this article didn’t make me any more upset about the Jets.

  26. Wasn’t there a change befor this one from Hank/Naples to Fonzie, and now “No favre no problem”? Just wondering.

  27. Apparently they are father and son, if my recollection is correct.

  28. What Florio and all the Jets-hating press focuses on is the Chad v. Favre issue, without noting that Mangini never wanted Chad. Chad was just always the best of a bad lot. Eric saw Chad when Eric was DC for the Pats and didn’t like what he saw. He traded up to get KC, gave KC a chance to win the QB position in ‘07 and KC looked awful. This season was even harder for Eric. Sure, he wanted to bench Chad, but now the best prospect looked like Ratliff (during Eric’s 3 years, the Jets cycled through, by my count, 7 QBs on the roster…not exactly a ringing endorsement of Chad). What getting Favre did was allow Eric to get rid of one headache, while hoping that the old man could get the Jets to the playoffs. It didn’t work out, but it’s pure revisionist history to say that the Jets should’ve stuck with Chad. Under Eric, Chad’s days were numbered starting back in ‘06 when he was hired.

  29. SD99-

Agreed. I’ve posted about forty versions of this more authentic interpretation of events but it just doesn’t fit the popular faux narrative so it’s a waste of time.

  30. The only thing that Florio failed to mention was, why Mangini was fired.

After an 8-3 start, the coaching staff forgot how Pro football is played. Our defense, with the same players we started the season with, forgot how to stop the run and decided not to apply any pressure. Our offense, was barely able to put together one good drive per game and it usually it was the first one. There were no coaching adjustments to stop the landslide. Zero!

If Favre or Jenkins was hurt and could not play up to full potential — it is the coaches job to sit them down and let them get healthy. Mangini obviously had no relationship with either of them and, as a result, they played below their capabilities and brought us down. Once again, a good reason for Mangini to be fired.

Cleveland is Cleveland. They do not scare me. Especially, if Mangini is their coach. If Jet management hires a quality coaching staff, we have enough talent on this team to walk into the Playoffs next year.

Except for Favre, our players did not choke on us. They are a hard working, classy, solid team. The next coach is going to walk into a great situation. I am not sold on the 3-4 (with these players) and I do not think that it would be difficult to go back to 4-3, if necessary. I hope Favre goes — I would have cut ties with him, already. Our remaining QB’s all have ability. Ratliff is either a great find or he had the luckiest pre-season of all time. Harris and Clowney will be healthy, next season. Stuckey and Keller have proven that they can be a quality receivers. The real Thomas Jones showed up this season and I see no reason why, with either Tony Richardson or Jehuu Caulcrick leading the way, he can’t lead the division next year. We definitely need a big receiving threat. I don’t see any reason why Marcus Henry can’t be the man. At 6′4″, he looked good in the pre-season. A good coach will either go with Henry or let Tannenbaum know he has to go shopping. Of course, saving money with Henry will allow Tanny to spend more on our defensive backfield. Revis is the only untouchable in that group. I would have to speak with Kerry Rhodes and his psychiatrist, as to what happened to him this season. It could have easily been the coaching staff that set him back. He has too much talent to go unnoticed for most of the season.

I just figured that, after Florio’s rant, I would remind you of the positive things that we have going for us. We are not the Detroit Lions. We are a few players, and a coaching staff, away from being one of the better teams in the league. Tennessee knows that.

  31. bent,

I will revert back to fonzie once farve leaves and yes hank/naples is my father. You never answered my question though. I am still waiting.

  32. We shoulda hung on to Rickey Ray, he lights it up in Canada and he’s a proven winner, at least give him some reps. The guy just wins and is a great escape artist. Maybe holds the ball too long but has a hell of a touch. Anyway not gonna happen, soooo id go with Favre again if it can all be worked out. Nothings really going to change until our defense starts making stops. We worked a long field it seemed for half a season. No good with our little cap gun offense. Hope the new coach has the good sense to turf Schottenheimer and Sutton.

    Regards, your canadian correspondent.
