Pennington Tells Hutch He Sensed It Coming
Star-Ledger reporter Dave Hutchinson spoke to Chad Pennington, who answered some questions about his perspective on getting marginalized during the past year and a half.
In fact, he hinted that the move to bring in quarterback Brett Favre was a business decision as much as it was a football decision. The Jets open a new stadium in 2010 and are tying to sell PSLs.
“This is a game but it’s a huge business,” said Pennington in a conference call with Jets beat reporters. “And business decisions are made regardless of what happens in between the white lines sometimes and you have to really keep it in that perspective.”
As for the decision to release him and sign Favre, Pennington said, “I think it was a collective effort. My overall feel from the organization was my time was up. Whereever that came from, that’s the way I felt regardless of who was brought in to replace me. …
“And I had had those feelings way before this year’s training camp. Those feeling started to come last year in the 2007 season. You just get a feeling as a human being. I felt that way since I was replaced in the 2007 season and that (his release) was a culmination of it.”
Pennington said he sensed that the organization felt it had gone as far as it could with him and it wanted to move in a different direction. “I wasn’t in those plans,” he said.
Of course, it’s nothing we don’t already know, but the fact that Chad spoke at it more or less directly and didn’t just shoo it under the carpet is worht noting.

no offense but im really gettin tired of the chad news…
and just as equally annoying the cowher news….
these two individuals have no impact on what the jets will be like in 2009….
cowher and chad mean nothing to me because they arent or wont ever be in green and white
I think Chad is 100% right about the motivation of Woody Johnson to bring in Favre. It was all about selling PSLs and raising the team’s profile. Of course, it crashed and burned because no one (except maybe Mangini) was overly concerned about whether Brett had anything left in the tank. Watching the sad press conference on Mangini’s firing it was obvious Johnson still sees Favre through $$$ colored glasses.
This is a funny story as i just heard Pennington tell Fat Mike on WFAN an hour ago that he was stunned when the news came down that he was being let go. Now how can he say to Hutch that he could sense it coming and then tell Mike today that he was completely shocked by the move??
His last sentence is true though. Every Jet fan thought they had gone as far as they could with #10. Chad’s typical bad game against Baltimore just confirmed that……no matter how awful Favre played the move was worth the risk!!
OF COURSE it was a BUSINESS decision you “MO-MO” you stunk in 2007!!
Look if you take all the nice qualities away from Chad then what you’re left with is just another quality player, and not a star performer. Chad under-preformed, hence the reason he got to see the door!!
Look the only way I could see Chad as a Jet again would be in the form of a QB coach to finish out his career. He could be good for a kid out of college, since he is very smart.
Yes, we can bash Favre all we want and praise Chad as a person, but Chad was in the way of moving forward … always good enough to beat out the young guys and hence prevent development, but not good enough to win a Super Bowl.
Favre is done…read this…

I’m sure he sensed it in ‘06 when Mangini was ambivalent about naming him the starter and then took KC in the 2nd round of the draft. For all the “kicked to the curb,” talk, he acknowledged that the team did him a favor by giving him his outright release. He’s a classy guy. If only his body was as strong as his heart.
Mad Dog, Favre has said that and more over the last 4 years. Unfortunately the Favre watch is on.
I think it’s true: Chad was not — and is not — good enough to carry a team to the Super Bowl.
But the key word there is “carry.” If he doesn’t have to be the man, if he can just be a strong part of a strong team, you can win with him. I thought going into the season, before the Favre trade, that with a better defense, a revamped offensive line, and a rejuvenated running game the Jets could win with Chad. I still think so. But we won’t know.
Did Chad give the JETS a shot at consistently beating the Brady-led Pats? At least getting Favre was an attempt at competing on a more level playing field in that regard!
I still think of the leg-fake he dropped to shuffle into the end zone that time……….hilarious.
I’m glad it’s over but let’s face it, Chad was the 2nd Best Quarterback this team has ever had at the helm.
Here is the latest comments from Brett Favre…..
“I don’t feel I have anything else to prove. Do I have to redeem myself for the last five games? No. I could be trying to do that until I’m 60 years old. There is nothing left out there for me from that standpoint. I’m disappointed with the last five games, sure, but I know I did everything I could have.’

I don’t think he is comming back.
Chad just interviewed with Michael Kay and Mike ask him if he would have made the playoffs Qbing the Jets this season….
Answer: ” My history showed that when I am healthy I win games and have made the playoffs 3 times with the Jets”
So the answer is Yes.
Wow and you Guys RAN him out of town!
Chad… You a class act and will always be a TRUE JET in my mind.
Thanks for all the great years.
he’s a class act with a water pistol arm
I think it’s funny how people like to say Chad can’t throw. Two TD passes in week 17 against us were things of beauty.
08 Jets would not have won the SB with Chad, but they would have beaten 2 out of three of – Raiders, San Fran, Seattle.
If Jets mgmt was smart, which we all doubt, we’d go with an improved D, strong run game, good special teams, and a QB that doesn’t turn the ball over. That’s a good combo in my mind. Unfortunately, it won’t happen. I guarantee you Favre will be back in ‘09. Guarantee. His ego is just too big to sit at home and watch the NFL move right along without him. He will come back and we will be a pass-first team and we will not be good. Again.
Sorry. I love the NYJ and wish for the best, but the owner and GM are publicly beggin BF to come back. He will. We will suffer for it.
What a skirt Chad is .. lol “he felt it as a human bring”
Thank god he’s gone..
Chad is what Chad is and he proved it again this year with Miami. He’s a solid, but limited, QB who can win games but doesn’t have the extra gear to push the team past good defenses in the playoffs. That’s been obvious for several years. The Favre deal was worth the risk. It didn’t work out but OK, so what. Would our season been so much better if we had squeached into the playoffs with Chad at QB and then got buried in the wildcard game. Been there, done that. The only issue is that another year has gone by and we still don’t know if KC (or Ratliff) is a player. QB is still a question mark for the Nth season in a row but that certainly would still be true if the Farve been never got done.
