Audible: Time to Do Some GMing

We don’t know about you, but the coaching talk is getting a little monotonous and repetitive.

We don’t know about you, but the coaching talk is getting a little monotonous and repetitive.

We don’t know about … ahem … yes …

So … assuming the Jets keep a 3-4 defense and assuming Brett Lorenzo Favre hangs up those comfortable Wranglers of his, what do you think the Jets need to look for to make this a better team for September of 2009?

What positions do they need to target? What areas do they need more depth? Are there players on the roster who deserve to be promoted into more prominent roles?

  1. The first thing that the OWNER needs to do is get a football guy to run the team, not an accountant/cap guy which is what Tannenbaum is.

Casserly would be good for player personnel.

  2. WR- Clowney needs more opportunities, but I’d love a tall guy.
Blocking TE- Kick Baker and his fairy tale contract back to OZ
    NT- Depth and eventual replacement
LG and RT- Guys who could pass block too. Late rounds and groom them.
FS- Elam or Smith. I’ll take the cyanide. Keep Elam for depth

    Less defensive backs. Quantity Quality

  3. How about giving Jason Trusnik a shot at playing more snaps next year at ILB, thought he played well against the Fins, when Harris got hurt. Clowney is a no brainer, enough with Brad Smith already, he had his chance, he is nothing more than 4th/5th WR.

Jets need a playmaking WR, maybe Clowney, but they should draft one as well. See if they can trade Coles, let Barton go in FA. I strongly believe there pass rushing can be solved by a coach/coordinator who puts the players in a better position. But they do need to add a Safety who is more consistent.

  4. That was supposed to be Quantity does not equal Quality. If Hank Poteat isn’t a Jet next year he will be a Brown.

  5. This borders on the Wrangler jeans decision you want to steer clear from, but I’d like to see Ratliff get a (real) chance to start. Bring in a Leftwich or Carr or maybe even Simms to compete for the job, but let Ratliff have a legit shot too.

Gholston will be key under Rex Ryan. Obviously.

I thin Lowery is the guy who will step up and solidify the backs — but they could use a stud safety to make that defense great. Also a pass rushing lineman (they grow on trees, I know)… but you are starting to see where I am headed by having Ratliff compete and strengthening the defense. Let Clowney develop and sure, bring in another WR to compete for the top three spots, but with Keller I think they have the talent to catch the ball. If Coles goes, we can bring in someone better to re-solidify that spot.

As dumb as this sounds, I want a stud punter, but obviously you just get lucky there.

  6. I need more cow bell. And lots more Leon Washington. And a stud WR. And a stud DE. Let the Clemmens / Ratliff battle begin.

Who’s out there for WR and DE that we could target?

  7. hopefully people can be more creative then Ratliff to clowney as our answer.

  8. 1) The jets need an A grade punter. As we have seen with the chargers and ravens, punters can actually win playoff games.

    2) need to get rid of coles and get a play making wide receiver.

    3) Address the QB situation — looking at whats out there, i wouldnt mind favre coming back.

    4) get rid of brian thomas, ellis, hobson, law, e smith, and restock the defense.

  9. i agree - i wouldnt be afraid to trade up to obtain more of a “sure thing” in the secondary like malcom jenkins from OSU. we dont need to waste 1/2 of the 53 man on the secondary like we did this year.

it will be more difficult to get the tall, playmaking receiver. heyward-bey is probably the best one after crabtree but selecting him #17 would be a reach.

after those 2 areas of need, we need to address depth at NG, as it was clear jenkins wore down this year and the 3-4 isnt the same without a dominate nose.

  10. I would draft Terrence Cody in the first round.

  11. Isn’t Shane Lechler a free agent this year?

  12. 1. WR: A Burner with hands

    2. SS: Strong Safety has been a problem since Victor Green left.

    3. ILB: A Speed inside linebacker

    4. NT: Someone to spell Jenkins. Every time he takes a break teams run right up the middle. They wait for this.

5.CB: A nickle back - Lowery will play more consistantly in 2009

    6. Another running back - Jone’s future replacement

    7. Continue to develope back up’s for center and the OL.

Then Coach them up - Let the young QB’s battle it out - lets go WIN with a Nasty Shut Down Defense designed by Rex Ryan with Rob at DC. Brian Shott at OC.

  13. Trade Coles and gold (Draft picks, oil, stadiums) for Anquan Boldin

  14. In this order…

    ILB
    WR
    DE/DT
    OL

  15. How about a decent safety to start next to #25?

Maybe Rex could bring Ed Reed with him?

  16. 1. CB = biggest need
2, Big WR (assuming Clowney can fill the speed role)
    3. DE
    4. ILB
At QB, Clemens needs a chance to show if he can play behind a real O-line and we have to see if Ratliff is as good as he looked in the pre-season.

  17. TruJetFan:

I just laughed out loud regarding your cow bell comment. Funny! I need more cow bell and Leon Washington as well!

    Ronnie:

Agreed! Hodges is awful! We see now where Graham is…almost in the damn Superbowl. Another bad move by the coaching staff. And I wouldn’t mind having Favre back either (crazy sounding, I know), because what better options do we have? None, unless we can get someone with more experience in here, which is probably not going to happen.

  18. 1. QB
    2. CB
    3. WR
    4. ILB

  19. I’d like to see the Jets stockpile picks for the 2010 draft so they have a shot at trading up for Tebow.

  20. I’d like to see them grab another WR and some more help for the secondary (preferably at safety). Those are the real pressing concerns for this offseason, because I’d like to see them give the young QBs a chance

  21. They won’t need to trade up for Tebow.

  22. #1 need - a big, downfeild, go to receiver. I mean come on. How long do we have to wait.

    #2 - A ballhawk - every secondary needs atleast 1.

#3- A QB with an arm that’s not 45 years old. No offense Vinny and Brett

#4 - A workhorse back that’s a little more exciting than TJ, to pair with TJ, a la Smash and Dash.

#5 - a speedy linebacker to play the other inside position for the 3-4

  23. oh, and J, you make a good point. Tanny’s a numbers guy, not a football guy.

  24. I’m a Gator but I don’t think Tebow is a NFL QB. I thought we’d have a chance at McNabb post benching, until the Eagles became the haute superbowl pick.
If Clemens was the answer, we would have seen him when Favre was playing catch with the other team’s secondary at the end of the season.

  25. I agree, Jerry.

Only, rather draft a runningback over a defensive end. I’m still hoping Gholston can break out.

I would like to draft an ILB and DB in the early rounds… maybe trade up from second round again. Here’s my wish list:

    Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State

    James Laurinaitis ILB Ohio State

    Rey Maualuga ILB USC

    DJ Moore CB Vanderbilt

    Taylor Mays FS USC

    Vontae Davis CB Illinois

    Mike Mickens CB Cincinnati

    Chris Wells RB Ohio State

    Knowshon Moreno RBF Georgia

  26. people are killing me with this Clemens/Ratliff thing.

Come on. Draft a QB for once. s that a mortal sin? The giants bet the house on it and they got a superbowl.

  27. Plaxico Burress and Pacman Jones address any of these? F the “good character” Mangini talk..lets sign as many criminals as we can!

    http://nflcrimes.blogspot.com/

  28. Let slow, fat eric barton go.

End the Brad Smith experiment or let him lern backup QB.

  29. Let Gholston play DE in a 4-3/3-4 hybrid like the pats did with Wild Willie.

  30. Get some character players for once.

Fire Brian Thomas. He’s never gonna be Willie Mcguinest.

  31. Tebow? For what purpose…To carry Scott Frost’s equipment?

C’mon now JP..Did you attent UF? Great college player but he cannot make throws from the pocket on Sunday…I do not care how many CBS/Fox announcers tell me otherwise..

  32. I think the Jets have to consider picking up a good free agent QB. The Leftwich, Carr debate is like choosing between getting kicked in the grion 10 times or 11 times.

The winner of the Clemens/Ratliff/Ainge competition would be better then Leftwich or Carr. I don’t think its possible to be worse. However, if the Jets have a chance to get a proven winner…aka Kerry Collins… then they should sign that guy to compete with the trio they already have.

  33. Let Tanny be in charge of the cap and only the cap.

Bring in John Madden to coach the team, Rob Ryan at DC and Mike Martz at OC.

  34. #1 - An Inside Linebacker

    #2 - A Corner Back

    #2 - A Safety

    #3- A Speedy Wide Receiver

    #4 - A Running Back

    #5 - An Offensive Tackle

  35. Igs,
John Madden, are you kidding? How would he get to road games in time and still coach the team?

  36. Oh give me a break. Just go ahead and draft a damned QB in the 1st: Rothlesburger, Manning (both), Elway, Marino, Simms, this is what you do to win right?

  37. …O, and (duh), Michael Vick to throw to Plax! Team needs a new identity. The NY Jets believe in second (or seventh) chances…rehabilition starts in green! I also think this will appeal more with the fan base. Come on..are we “gun in da club” people or wrangler people??!?!

  38. I would just like to point out that not only would Krista not mind having Favre ruin the ‘09 season, but also thinks G’Day Graham’s punting is what got the Arizon Cardinals to the NFC championship game. To think that those decades of misery could be erased by an Aussie Rules punter…

Seriously: QB will be about praying for something to materialize
between KC and Ratliff. But I’d love to see some more depth, quality and youth on the d-line for reasons that have been discussed, and I’d like to see a first day pick in the secondary. Basically, if Brett Favre stayed in Missou last summer and/or the d-line had held up in Decemeber, we’d have been playing this past weekend. Whether or not we’d be playing next weekend is another story. But there aren’t any insurmountable weaknesses. Who ever takes over this team is inheriting a pretty full cupboard.

And I agree with Ronnie. Hobson has got to go.

  39. lol. I know. but he’s omnipotent. I mean, what player wouldn’t listen to John Madden? Anyway, just joking. But not all joking.

  40. Chris Weinke, Eric Crouch and Tim Tebow - just another Heisman Winning NFL Bust!

  41. Start using a dual backfield with Leon and TJ or someone else.

  42. Get some sleepers for once.

  43. NO RETREAD QB’s….. PLEASE NO!!!!!!!!

Let the young guy’s battle it out and/or draft another to put in the mix.

  44. get rid of stupid idiot bob sutton

  45. tony dungy just retired

looks like the Jets aren’t the most intriguing franchise for a new head coach

  46. Defensive Lineman take time to develop in a 3 - 4 defense.

The Jets have the personnel in the front 7 to play it.

You need an effective NT to back up Jenkins and a speed inside linebacker.

  47. I forgot about Brad Smith… Losing him would decrease the Schotty cuteness factor, and make room for Clowney. BS’s ability to make big plays has plummeted since his rookie season.

And as far as betting the house like the Giants did with Eli. If I made a list of the 20 people most responsible for last year’s super bowl, Eli would have a hard time making the cut. I wish no ill will on the Giants, now that I live on the west coast, they’re pretty much just another team in the NFL. So it’s not sour grapes when I say this, but what you saw from Eli yesterday afternoon is a lot closer to who he is as a player than the guy who super-glued a football to David Tyree’s helmet.

  48. The Colts already hired Tony’s replacement.

The Jets are still the best team without a coach.

  49. anyone know if money wise we can make a run ot houshya mamma

  50. Here you go, instead of being vague like everyone else, here are some actual suggestions (Top 5)…

    1. Draft ILB Spikes from Florida in the first round. He is a high energy guy with tons of talent. He would be great under Spags or Ryan, if either get the job.

    2. Clowney is a gadget guy. Any involvement would be more than the zero he had this year due to injury, but to say he should be one of the starting WR’s is absolutely insane. The guy had one great preseason playing against 3rd string defenses.

Big tall fast WR’s are extremely hard to come by. If they cant (or wont) trade up to get Crabtree (never happening) their first round pick should be Spikes and stick with the WR’s we have. They are not the problem. Yes, they need one of those top flight WR’s, but aside from 4 or 5 times, who doesnt? This is just more wishful thinking.

    3. Depth at NT is obvious, but there is no one that jumps out at you. You might have to roll the dice in rounds 3 or 4 on an oversized NT. Teams are built through the draft.

    4. I think we have a great safety in Dwight Lowrey. Playing him at corner has proven to be costly as teams just pick on him constantly. Round 2 should be the best safety available.

    5. If Rex Ryan is the next head coach, would it be too ridiculous if one of his two high profile LB’s followed him? One of which is Ray Lewis, who would be going into his 14th season, but he would be an anchor of the defense due to his knowledge of the system (and the fact that he is still a beast) and Bart Scott, who would be a huge upgrade from Eric Barton, who most likely (and shouldnt be) wont be brought back. He is another guy with knowledge of the system who could help the transition.

  51. We need lineman on both sides of ball. We don’t need an edge pass rusher, as we have BT, Ghostman, and Pace, all of whom I think could get to QB with proper coaching and scheme.

    1) A genuine 3-4 DE like Richard Seymour. I wanted Kendall Langford in the draft last year. (Before that I wanted Adam Carriker . . . ) Now Langford is a starter in Miami. Even when Jenkins was on the field and healthy, we only had two real defensive lineman.

    2) A genuine stud Left Tackle. One who can push defenders backwards on running plays. D’bust cannot do that. (Maybe cut him or try D’bust at tight end or DE where his speed would be useful–OT’s must be strong, which D’bust is not.)

    3) A backup NT–yes, Jenks gets tired from hauling around his weight

    4) A mauler RG/RT prospect to upgrade or push Woody and Moore. Or maybe a G/C prospect who can backup Mangold. (Do we even know who plays center if Mangold is hurt?) Also, a vet F/A like Trey Teague was supposed to be might be ok.

    5) CB–I think Lowery is slot material. We need someone good oppositte Revis. I wonder why we can’t try for Lito Shephard. He succeeded in a blitz heavy scheme in Phil. before he inexplicably got in Andy Reid’s doghouse. He is only 28, I think, and has been to a couple of pro-bowls but didn’t really play at all this year.

    6) ILB to pare with Harris. How about Bart Scott as FA? He’s used to playing second fiddle to superstar ILB and he can (hopefully) help teach Ryan’s defense.

    7) RB prospect–we should take one late round flyer every year or every other year on a super fast guy like chris johnson. Tennesse struck out with Chris Henry two years ago, but hit gold with Johnson. They were essentially the same: unkown small school backs who had great combines and were drafted in later rounds. Plus, TJ will fall apart soon, as he’s close to the end of the line for RB careers.

  52. The colts named dungy’s successor last year

  53. goat, you’re so wrong. Eli’s the guy that pulled that offense together.

This speaks to Tebow question to - a QB can have all the mechanics but if they don’t have the will and the spirit to win, the right attitude, the right poise, the ability t inspire, AKA leadership, then they’re not worth taking.

I admit Eli has his flaws. More because he’s still growing as a QB - remember Peyton now. But he did a lot of subtle things to set an example.

The ELi w=you saw yesterday was Eli without a big, go to target. That’s most QB’s anyway. Only Uber QB’s with stellar defense, like Peyt can pull that off. Eli’s not that. But he was in he playoffs last year. And he will be back. And you’ll eat those words.

  54. Why are so many people ignoring the obvious?

It scares that everyone wants to draft defense in the first round (when’s the last time we didn’t?) when we don’t have a reliable QB on the roster. Let Clemens and Ratliff duke it out? Seriously? Duke WHAT out? Who will get us more losses this season?

I’m done with these guys. I’d take Favre back for a year over both of them, even Favre at 50%, so long as we use a HIGH DRAFT PICK on a solid QB. Get Stafford or Bradford, for crying out loud. I love all these people whining about how we should’ve kept Chad. Guess what - he’s the only first round QB this team has drafted in YEARS.

Of course, everyone wants to sit here and worry about a bust. Well, so what if he busts? A CB can’t bust? A LB? A NT? We’ve drafted busts at all these positions recently (anyone remember Dewayne Robertson?), so let’s take a risk and fill what, in my mind, is the team’s biggest hole.

I’m sick of the “play not to lose” strategy that this team has gone with for years. That’s what it is, isn’t it? Because a good defense doesn’t score points…and it’s still the team with the most points that wins, correct? Our defense is pretty good, not great, but what exactly is so scary about our offense? Nothing. FIX THAT.

  55. the first thing the Jets ned to do is draft a QB. Draft whichever one falls… Bradford Stafford or Sanchez, assuming they all come out? The Jets need someone for the future. Let whoever play next year. Leftwich was not a bad idea. Probably better than anyone we have. He got a bad rap in Jacksonville. He is injury prone though….

Also, the Newark Star Ledger is indicating that the Jets have zeroed in on Rex Ryan as their next HC.

  56. Favre…. What a joke!!!!!!!!

You may have a “Tom Brady” on the bench. You have to find out!!!!

  57. In McShay’s last mock draft, he has the Jets getting another Ohio State LB, but Mark Sanchez going after the Jets. I say go for Sanchez if he is there. I doubt he will be after the way he played in his bowl game, but the Jets need a QB!! I agree with you guys….

  58. LAJets, I like your style

  59. You could also have Browning Nagle….

You can still find out and sit the first round QB and start Ratliff or Clemens for a year or two…. The rookie will need time to learn.

  60. But i gotta disagree. The Jets don’t draft busts. They make bust out of good players. There’s a laundry list of guys that go elsewhere and have great success.

  61. Great post, Joe S!

Only, I’m hoping David Clowney can be that “burner with hands,” but wouldn’t mind drafting a wide receiver in the third or fourth rounds.

Also, I’m hoping Jets land Rex Ryan too. Only, Mangini’s first move as Cleveland Browns’ head coach was to hire his brother Rob as his defensive coordinator. I’m guessing Rex would bring one of Balimore’s coaches with him for DC.

    HC: Rex Ryan
    OC: Brian Schottenheimer
    DC:
    O-Line Coach: Bill Callahan

Fortunately, Tebow decided to stay in school, so I can breath easy Jets won’t draft him - whew!

  62. While I hate using more picks on the D, I think it starts there in the ‘09 draft.

We need to get an outside lineman to take some pressure of Jenkins and maybe put pressure on an opposing quarterback, unless Rex/Spags thinks Gholston is better suited to play down.

We desparately need a safety/db, especially if we ever want to play a blitz scheme. Hate using another 1st round pick on this though. Right when this pick comes into his own, Revis will be a free agent getting paid like crazy.

I would love to see us grab the UNC receiver Nicks in the 2nd round if he falls. That guy is nasty.

I think we punt HB and QB for this season, Jones/Leon is a solid blend when considering all our other weaknesses and we have a 2nd round QB who still hasn’t had a shot with an above average line. If Mccareins could catch a ball, Clemens may have had an entirely different start to his tenure as starter.

    So:

DE/DB (best player on board- would love to move up to get Malcolm Jenkins)

    Rd 2- Nicks

    Rd 3/4/5 DE/DB/OL

    Rd 8 - Ben Graham’s opposite

Do the Jets even have the cap room to sign these picks?

  63. What if Ryan does not want Schot or Callahan?

  64. I hope they get Russ Grimm. I hear he will kick some a$$…. I would not be opposed to Ryan though.

The Jets definitely need a QB of the future in the first round. Look at the teams that are left. McNabb first round, Big Ben first round and Flacco (who we could have had instead the Gholston) first round…. Warner is the only one that was not a first round pick.

  65. More Flight Crew!

  66. LOL…. Yes, I like that zenlaw…..

  67. draft taylor mays at safety and get a back in the second round. washington is great and jones had a great year, but chances are they won’t get lucky with just 2 backs that can produce next year.

  68. BRING BACK JAMES FARRIOR he’s a free agent in PITT this year and bring in SCOTT from BALTIMORE…DRAFT DRE KIRK PATRICK 1st round plays CB,WR,and SAFETY,IF CLEMENS doesn’t beat out RATIFF cut his @SS this preseason or trade CLEMENS for another QB,lots of WR free agents out there get a tall, speedy wide receiver that can jump and has good hands, middle round RB for future, and PLEASE find a 3-4 DE that can get off blocks and rush the passer, and FINAL THOUGHTS=WOODY and MIKE T> if ya get REX RYAN open your mouths and insert your feet LET REX do his thing for this defense, get the players he feels fit his scheme, and tell SUTTON to put on his dunce cap and listen to every thing REX tells him…

  69. whatever happened to nate garner, last year’s 7th rd pick? anyone know?

looking back on last year’s draft, it’s really amazing that only two players had any impact or significant playing time. i think that in an average draft you should get at least two starters or big contributors, two more who contribute in lesser roles, and maybe one more with potential and maybe two busts or washouts.

  70. bring in all free agents possible! turn down no one! overlook no one! And if possible, draft a running back in the 1st round

  71. Here is just a quick start….

QB - Hire Kerry Collins (let the back-up duke it out for the #2 spot.
OC - Hire a anyone with a clue and burn Shottys play book in the fire place!
Depth - Protect the key players like Jenkins, Mangold, T-Rich with quality backups.
Trade Bubby “Gump” Franks & Chris Baker for an upgrade to the position.
Trade Jessie Chatman for draft picks (sorry Jessie).
Trade Coles and Brad Smith for someone with talent!!!
Start training Clowney to be the third starter.
Fire James Ihedidgbo he sucks on ST!!!!
Smack around Vernon Gholston durring the off-season. I think if you beat him a few times … and then some more just for fun, he may get a mean streak and with some playing time he might be a good player vs being a bust.

  72. Defense

Safety: Jets need someone opposite Rhodes, hopefully someone who could really deliver the big hit. The Jets need a big hitter on the team who could pump everyone up, and they could get that in the other two positions needed, but both William Moore out of Missouri and Taylor Mays out of USC look like players that could fit in nicely in our defense.

ILB: Next to Harris, again maybe someone who could deliver the big hit. If they don’t go for one of the safeties maybe they can go for Lauranitis, Maluaga, or Spikes

Cornerback: I like Lowery a lot, and the only way for him to continue to grow is to play him…the Jets are only stunting his potential if they throw him to the side. That being said, they need a sure option next to Revis…maybe an early round pick or a FA.

    OFFENSE

QB: Uh duh? Ratliff showed a lot of potential and they should definitely try him out to see what else he has, same thing with Clemens yet I’m a lot less optimistic about ihm. In the draft maybe go for Sanchez, Bradford, or Stafford if any drop? Maybe go for a late rd flier such as Freeman, Chase Daniels, or Harrell.

WR: Get Clowney involved more but he’s not the answer. They need someone opposite Cotchery.

LEON: Leon must get more involved but I’m not so sure it should be via handoffs. Though he breaks the big ones, I’m not that confident consistently handing it off to him, he thrives in open space but can’t grind out the yards. Play to his advantages and utilize him like the Saints use Bush: line him up in the slot, pitches, shovel passes, screen, etc.

finally the optimal coaching lineup (not that it will ever happen)

HC: Rex Ryan (takes over d so dc is irrevelent)
OC: Callahan (reinvigorated our run game, had some potential shown at Oakland)
QBCOACH: Jags (developed Ryan and could develop our next QB)

  73. While a tall WR that can create separation is ideal, and anyone like that is a high 1st rounder, I’ll take any size WR that can create separation and, fwiw, Clowney at 6-0 is taller than Steve Smith (5-9) and Greg Jennings (5-11). But, on offense, that’s the no. 1 need besides QB. I’d also take RB depth, especially if Moreno is available at 17.

On defense, I think Lowery can be the RCB to Revis’ LCB. He was a rookie and showed that he has lots of talent, but not elite speed. Yet, he’s a great tackler and smart. If he improves, he’s fine. And, I can live with Elam at safety…this was his first full season of NFL action. He can improve, too. The defensive weaknesses are RDE, Bryan Thomas at OLB, and the ILB to play next to Harris, who could be Laurinaitis or Bart Scott. A better pass rush will make the secondary look a lot better. I’ve posed this before, but are the Jets precluded from making a deal for a stud, pass-rushing ROLB because of Gholston? I think, unfortunately, the answer is: yes. The Jets have to see if VG can rush the passer. If not, he’s a wasted pick.

I’m not sure that there’s going to be a QB worth drafting at 17, but Josh Freeman sure has an awesome skill set. In any event, the Jets have to see what they have in KC, Ratliff and Ainge, so signing a vet like Leftwich (and, IMO, comparing him to Carr is an insult to Byron, Marshall and the US of A) makes a lot of sense. The Jets can’t enter the season with just KC and Ratliff…that would be suicide.

Also, the Jets’ most important task right now is to hire an HC. I hope that will be Ryan who will bring the blitz to the Jets and I also wouldn’t mind if the Jets have the same commitment to the run that Baltimore has. Leon is better than Rice, Jones is equal to McGahee and the Jets should see if Caulcrick (or Tony R.) could be an FB like McClain Every time Tony carried, he got positive yardage. Who said that 2nd and 6 always has to be a passing down? A strong running game will make it a lot easier for the new QB or even Favre if he comes back.

  74. Houzmanzadah
Favre on a strength and conditioning program
    A safety
    A punter
    A cornerback
    A Defensive H C.

  75. Fun fact:

    Ray Rice-107 carries
    Leon - 76 carries.

    That’s just not smart football.

  76. Sign Antonio Bryant…he is exactly the type of receiver the jets are looking for. He has great hands, and was great this year in Tampa Bay. If they are unable to sign him the Jets need to look for a receiver in the second round of the draft. The Jets need to get tougher and faster on defense.

I’m not sure where he is projected, but I’d say that the perfect fit for the Jets in the first round is Taylor Mays.

  77. Realistically here are the positions of need and the players that can help to satisfy these positions..

    1. qb i would like ratliff to win the job but him and clemens cant do any worse then last year. I personally would love to see Ron Mexico in jet Green next season
    2. wr- i dont think we are signing one in free agency so i really want the kid hakeem nicks from unc. maybe get him in round 2
3 two cbs i think we draft one in round 3 maybe like captain munnerlyn from south carolina and we sign a bryant mcfadden away from pittsburgh. 2 CORNERS ARE DUE TO THE FACT WE MOVE LOWRY TO SAFETY TO COMPLIMENT K RHODES.
    4. backup nose tackle maybe even a Grady Jackson even though he is old he doesnt have to play every snap and you can probably get him cheap unless you want to go MOUNT CODY either way he will be serviceable to spell jenkins.
    5. inside linebacker This is where it gets crazy because if Rex Ryan is the head coach you might gett Ray in town but if you dont then you must take Rey Maluaga and put him next to david harris..
    6. Right tackle or Left tackle of the future if you decide to move brick to right for lets say a michael oher or andre smith if not then go get a max starks or a Tra Thomas

  78. Matt W, you’re posts are hilarious.

  79. I want something to be excited about this year with the NFL Draft. Is that wrong? Frankly, drafting a CB/S/LB/etc. does NOTHING for me, nor does watching them do next to nothing during the season while our offense continues to struggle.

It’s beginning to seem as if this team is unable or unwilling (or both) to play anyone at QB except a second-stringer on any other team. Let’s take a look at who’s been leading this team recently and their records as the starting QB:

    Brett Favre - 9-7
    Kellen Clemens- 3-5
    Brooks Bollinger- 2-7
    Quincy Carter- 2-1
    Pennington- 32-29
    Rick Mirer- 2-4
    Vinny T.- 35-26
    Ray Lucas- 6-3
    Neil O’Donnell- 8-12
    Frank Reich- 1-6
    Bubby Brister- 1-3
    Glenn Foley- 1-7

    Wow.

Pretty miserable to look at. And yet we just want to chalk up another ugly name at the top of this pile. And you know what? He’s going to play poorly - the status quo, as you can see - and then what? I guess by then it’ll be Eric Ainge’s turn to be the Jets QB, as we watch other teams draft better QBs and argue among ourselves which benchwarmer on the Jets may be “the next Tom Brady.”

  80. BRING IN RON MEXICO

  81. all the jets need 2 do is get a good head coach and train!!!!!!!!!!

i agree that the defense could be better especailly on pass plays

    the offense needs work…..
Jets need a tall, quick reciver that can catch
    (clowney ca fill that postion)
    RB’s can be better

    GET RID or BENCH FARVE!!!!!
put in clemets or radliff 4 gos sake
FARVE WAS GOOD IN HIS PRIME,
BUT THA 2008-09 SEASON WAS A HUGE DISSPOINTMENT!!!!

WE NEED A QB THAT HAS YOUNG BLOOD!!!

  82. mr wrangler jeans: 522 pass attempts. 22 INTs (last). 80.3 QB rating (21st)
    jets RBs: 4.7 YPC (5th). 422 attempts (19th)!!!

    that aint smart either

can someone explain how a team averages nearly 5 yards per carry, but chooses to have their washed up QB throw 100 more passes than rushes (22 of which going to the other team)??

its not rocket science. this team should be a smash mouth running team

  83. The bench warmers on New England’s bech was Tom Brady and Matt Cassel.

Time to develop a youg QB. Time to let young QB’s battle it out for the job. Time to draft another and throw him into the battle.

    RETRED QB’s = FAILURE!!!!!

    GARBAGE IN = GARBAGE OUT!!!!!!

  84. BRING IN RON MEXICO
This is the only man who actually paid his debt to society lets get him here and let jags teach him how to be a qb

  85. brian 311, and with those 522 attempts and an increasingly less mobile Favre, the OL gave up only 30 sacks, good for 14th (the supposedly awesome Giants OL gave up 28, while Eli threw 30 fewer times than Favre). Give this OL a second year intact and that number will go down to the low 20s. The foundation is there on offense.

  86. Our biggest need to me is at QB. Sign a veteran to push Ratliff/Clemens, Don’t want to see Favre back (too much going on with him) He may be better than what we have but we may never find out. Addtion by subtraction.
Houzmanzadah is a possession guy we need a big burner, and please don’t tell me clowney is a number 1 receiver.
QB & Receiver that’s the move.
I think we’re ok on defense besides adding depth. You want a S/NT/CB fine, but I think Ryan can smack Gholston in the mouth and wake him up a little at LB…we spent the 6th pick on him we can’t give up yet. Mangini wanted the kid to be Albert Einstein, you have to play to his strenths and let him go out there and kill the QB. Also I think if Ryan is here he’s bringing Scott or Lewis.
Lets draft some skilled offensive players for once!

  87. 1) 4-3 defense WITHOUT the Cover-2 aspect
    2) prototype, six-foot-four-ish WR who can take the ball from DBs
    3) No Barton and MORE TRUSNIK !!
    4) Brett ….. RATLIFF !!!!
    5) A creative offensive mind who can get WRs away from defenders, a la Charlie Weis used to
    6) Dump Baker and Franks
    7) Draft: an inside short yardage runner, a large WR, a pass rusher, and a cover corner, not necessarily in that order.

  88. Stop with the Housh talk, the last thing we need is another possession receiver. Favre should stay in Kiln. Defense is what wins the Super Bowl, just missing another CB, ILB and a Safety, at least 2 of those should be handled through the draft.

  89. #1: FS
    #2: WR
    #3: QB (on roster)

WR: i think we should see what we can do to move up to get crabtree if he slips past the seahawks. we need a tall dangerous receiver that can make a difference and be a franchise receiver of the future. or, if we can somehow give up someone and a draft pick for tj housh.

QB: lets see what clemens has. chad couldn’t get anything done with the line we had last year, was cut loose and thrived behind a different line. let’s see what a young, strong-armed clemens can do behind a solid OL with a successful running game

  90. Get Hakeem Nicks from UNC ASAP and go and Trade for Michael VIck aka Ron Mexico

  91. Someone please…

Tell me exactly how Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff is the answer. Because if you think either one is Tom Brady or Matt Cassell…you’re crazy.

I just hope Mike T. and the new coach want a new, young QB to lead this team as much as I do.

  92. {LAJetsFan, on January 12th, 2009 at 6:32 pm Said:
    Someone please…

    How do you know?????

Brady was a 6th round pick!

Cassel was a free agent signing that didn’t start a game in College!

How do you know what you have on the QB roster?????

  93. Is Mark Sanchez a possibility? I’ve seen him as high as # 3 and as low as the second round. Also seen him at like #15.
No way we can get Crabtree, but what about Maclin? 4.3 fourty speed baby.

  94. Crabtree will probably go in the top 10. Why not give KC or Ratliff a chance? Drafting a QB in the first round is no gimme and I do not think any coming out this year are going to get any team to the playoffs next year. With the O-Line the Jets have and a pretty darn good set of RB’s, the Jets need a game manager for a QB, not someone who throws 22 INTS or someone in there first year.

  95. is anyone familiar with Jim Caldwell, Dungy’s replacement? I vaguely remember as the incompetent coach at Wake in the 90s, one of the worst records in D1 in the 90s - might have won ten games or so over 8 or years of coaching. People have to be talking about the fact that this guy is the new HC of Peyton’s team, no?

  96. Sorry LAJetsFan, but EddieC is right. Let Kellen Clemens play.

He was a bargain pick up in the second round due to an injury his senior year. Prior to which, he ranked fifth in nation in total offense (329.2 ypg.)… not too shabby, eh?

Like Matt Cassell, he’s pretty much carried a clipboard since. It’s time to what he can do behind an improved offensive line and running game!

Of course, Brady was a sixth round pick and Tony Romo wasn’t even drafted, so NFL Draft is a crap shoot; yet, Clemens deserves a real shot and it’s in our best interest to give it to him!

  97. Deal Coles and someone else for Anquan Boldin

  98. im not sure what were going to do but clemens and ratliff are not the ones

  99. Head Coach – Plan A – Mike Shanahan, Mike Shanahan, Mike Shanahan!

Head Coach – Plan B – Not sure that Mike Shanahan would want the NY Jets job, so I’d take Baltimore’s Ryan as head coach with the condition that he keep Brian Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator, hire Jagodzinski as the QB’s coach, hire his brother as the defensive coordinator, and bring Marty Schottenheimer in as the GM (move Tannebaum back to a pure cap specialist role — the guy is not a talent evaluator)

QB - Let Clemens and Ratliff compete – Clemens played on a very bad team with a horrible offensive line in 2007. We need to see how he performs with a team that can run the ball.

RB - Jones is getting old and Washington is not an everydown back - acquire a young talent to develop behind Jones

OL – acquire a massive run-blocking RT and move Woody from RT to RG, or consider acquiring a LT and move Ferguson to RG (and back-up LG). He has been a major disappointment as a LT – the Jets are unable to run effectively off Left Tackle and he is very inconsistent in pass protection on obvious passing downs. Instead of drafting LT D. Ferguson and QB K. Clemens, the NY Jets could have had QB Jay Cutler and LT Marcus McNeil in 2006 – oops!!!

TE – develop Keller as a Tony Scheffler type receiving weapon; keep Baker; draft another young TE to develop behind Baker

WR – acquire a bid, red-zone-target, true #1 WR and trade Coles down to Miami to be with his boyfriend

DL – acquire a young NT and DE to develop behind Ellis and Jenkins

LB – acquire a young ILB to develop behind Barton (re-sign him… he knows the 3-4 and while he is not an impact LB, he is serviceable)

CB – develop Lowery as the #2 CB opposite Revis – he flashed signs in 2008 that indicate potential

Safeties – acquire a replacement for Elam

    Draft
Trade down in the draft to get more picks… this team will need time to develop their young QB and should re-stock with young players that will be ready to compete in 2010 in the new stadium.

  100. Bring in Rex Ryan as HC. Get a big fast WR who can stretch the field (Draft Kenny Britt from Rutgers in 2nd round) and get rid of Coles. Get a RB in the 4th or 5th round to complement Leon and TJ. Get some OL depth. Get a stud DE and a NT to play behind Jenkins. Get a real solid #2 CB to play opposite Revis and get a playmaking S to play next to Rhodes. And we need LBs who can cover as well as rush the QB.

    Guys who need to go:
    Favre
    Coles
    Bubba
    Thomas
    Elam/Smith
    Barrett
    K Coleman
    Barton

    GET KENNY BRITT

  101. If we have a top 5 defense next year we don’t need the QB to win games…just don’t do anything to screw it up like 5 INT’s. Let Clemens and Ratliff battle, but I do think you need a veteran in case things get ugly in the spring. Let’s not forget that Kellen Clemens couldn’ t beat out Chad Pennington, and the coaches were looking for any reason to get rid of Chad.

  102. Offense: The Jet’s did bring in offensive line help last year, but both players are getting up there in age. Next year the Jets will most likely have a young quarterback, and if they want whoever it is to have a chance at succeeding, they better be able to take pressure off of him by running the ball, and by keeping him off of his back. Even if Faneca and Woody come back as the same players, it would be better for their replacements to learn how to prepare, physically and mentally, from those two.

Defense: The jet’s run defense and pass rush started out strong, but then fizzled down the stretch. In my mind this was mainly caused by Jenkins wearing down, which shouldn’t be surprising as he was the only one on the Dline who commanded double teams. In a 3-4, you need studs up front to create chaos, opening things up for the Linebackers. If you have two guys up front, who command double teams, then blitzing linebackers becomes more effective. Opposing teams would then have to counter this by keeping additional blockers in, usually a tight end, which would also help with the teams inability to cover them. Adding another star up front would also lesson the impact the defense feels without Jenkins in the game, and should even allow them to spell him more often, keeping him fresh for when it matters most.

  103. The biggest needed on offense for I dont know how many years has been a big, physical, fast WR…The Jets need to draft Kenny Britt!!..Keep the kid from Bayonne and Rutgers home and in Green!!

  104. as for depth…

we need a NT for when Jenkins needs a breather…anyway we could work out a trade for D.ROB?

  105. hope you are kidding Eddie

  106. Joe S.

Drew Bledsoe went down (on a Pats team, mind you, well on its way to another mediocre season) and Tom Brady stepped right in. What happened? The Pats went to the Super Bowl THAT YEAR and won!

Tom Brady goes down and what happens? Matt Cassel, like Brady before him, stepped right in and performed, often playing as good if not better than Brady.

Chad got benched in favor of Kellen Clemens and what did he do? If my memory serves me correctly, he had a whopping 5 TDs and 10 interceptions in eight games, a performance so extraordinary that he likely would’ve been demoted had he not gotten injured.

Realistically, calling Kellen Clemens the next Brady or Cassel or anybody is wishful thinking. Long story short, when those guys got chances, they showed, beyond a reasonable doubt, that they were worthy of the hype. Clemens on the other hand simply underperformed and disappointed. And, once again, Ratliff’s success came against second stringers. I remember seeing Brooks Bollinger have similar succes in the preseason…and putting up Kellen Clemens numbers once he actually got a shot in the regular season.

Yes, the NFL Draft is a crap shoot…so why is everyone so keen to draft defense then, if defense is so important? Why not go with more reliable options, like signing free agents who’ve actually proven something in the NFL? The problem with picking up proven, young NFL QBs in free agency is obvious: there ARE none…unless you want to give up picks for Cassel, and frankly I’m fed up with ex-Patriots.

Defense is important, no doubt about it, but enough with the whole “defense wins games.” You can hold the opponent to a field goal or one touchdown and that’s a pretty good game, but it means nothing if you’re don’t have a QB, a leader on offense who can drive down the field and score himself. I’d rather see them gamble with a QB in the draft, one with infinite potential, and have them fail than have someone who’s already demonstrated they can’t get the job done start for this team.

  107. I SAY WE GIVE KC,RATTY,ON ANGILE AS QB.IT MAY NOT BE MUCH BUT I THINK EVERY TEAM HAS A TOM BRADY ON ITS TEAM.LOOK AT CASSEL,WARNER,DILFER,MANNING,AND YES, A YOUNGER BRETT FARVE BEFORE THE PICKS AND THE WRANGLERS

  108. Mind you, I’m not saying DON’T give Clemens a chance to start. Like everyone else, he and Brett Ratliff should have every opportunity to WIN the starting job.

What I’m saying is that it’s foolish to go into training camp with just them and some veteran off the waiver wire. A depth chart of Clemens, Leftwich and Ratliff is an invitation for an 8-8 season at best.

Ideally, I’d like to draft a young guy who could, potentially, be our QB for more than just a couple seasons…since it’s so rare for the Jets to have one. Instead, we have one guy who’s okay, then another guy that we got on a cheap comes along, gives us hope and wins the job only to surrender it one or two seasons later.

The safest best to me is to draft the best QB we can get our hands on and let him compete with Clemens and Ratliff…and hopefully he can show he’s worth of hype. Bring in a veteran to training camp just in case and have the four of them duke it out. And if the highly ranked rookie wins, maybe we have the next Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco. If not…then we’re left with Clemens anyway. But it’s better than going into training camp with just Clemens, Ratliff and Ainge.

  109. These answers all point to Tanny’s mistake in last years draft. Pick the QB to groom and ILB is on tops of everyones list. What a shame we didn’t trade down or pull a Minnesota Viking/Mike Tice move and just let the next team on the board draft ahead of us. Missing Mayo and/or Flacco prove to be huge misses. Mayo was by far the best coming out and pairing him with David Harris after letting Vilma go, especially after signing Pace and then drafting an OLB in Gholston, proved to pay huge dividends for the Pats. Flacco 2 wins in the playoffs…’nough said. Tanny better do a hell of a lot better in April to get rookies contributing, because we can’t rely on FA with huge pay days anymore. IMy personal wish list includes Maualuga ILB USC and/or Taylor Mays FS USC. If either are on the board, which I doubt, would be sweet!!!!! If not and Moreno is there…we have to pick him.

  110. If Stafford or Bradford slip to a point where we can trade up just a few spots to get one, I think it’s a no brainer. I can understand not trading up into the top ten, but I’ll be crossing my fingers. Despite my personal desire to draft a QB, if they’re NOT available, it may just come down, fortunately or unfortunately, to picking the best player available (in which case, yeah, Moreno or Wells would be great - or one of the top WRs).

david i, you’re right. I heard all through Draft season that the Jets were high on Joe Flacco. They could’ve grabbed him and they didn’t, which was a mistake. This is going to be a huge draft, so I hope whoever they get to coach this team will offer some valuable input into the selections we make.

  111. LAJets fan….what makes you think stafford and bradford are franchise quarterbacks to invest in???
what have you seen that tells you they can step into a starting postion next year and maximize this teams offensive potential??? when opposing coaches read scouting reports and review tape, what would they point out and be cautious of in a stafford or bradford that they wouldnt in a clemens(honestly not too sold on him either) or ratliff??? dont knock the guys efforts if they havent even recieved the proper oppourtunity…ecspecially ratliff! …..the guy does the best anyone could have possibly done once given his lone oppourtunity in pre season and then its “oh its against 2nd stringers tho!”…ok…stafford and bradford beat up on some college kids…..does that make their resume much better??….NO

drafting a qb in the first round for us bring us along more confusion and unsureness as to what we are trying to establish at the postion. just like some are hoping for ratliff to shine bright your looking to a bunch of unproven college kids to shine bright as well……and then hope to god we dont have a ryan leaf, tim couch or joey harrington on our hands….

in closing, dont let the espn analysts hype you too much buddy, not every nfl quality QB was a shoe in early first rounder…..as a matter of fact…most of them werent…….its funny how flacco and matt ryan can make you guys easily forget. patience is a virtue

  112. I would think about drafting a replacement for Gholston. He’s clearly not the player he used to be.

  113. the player he used to be?

i thought he was our water boy?

  114. Ummmm……

    Anquan Boldin
    Anquan Boldin
    Anquan Boldin
    Anquan Boldin
    Anquan Bolidn
Oh yeah, ……… and ANQUAN BOLDIN

  115. Whats all the excitement about for Stafford, everytime I watched Georgia play this year and last, he was not worthy of a 1st round pick. He is not that accurate and makes terrible decisions. Give Gholston a chance, everyone seems to think he has been in the league for years, last year he was a 21 year old college kid. He was not allowed to attend all the off season workouts, because he was still in college. This year is a different story, full year under his belt, no more college, I think he will be good and prove that he was worth drafting.

  116. Also, nnamdi asomugha is a FA. The jets should sign him to play opposite Revis and then we will have the best corner tandem in NFL history

  117. …..and just in case you were wondering…..NO it is NOT a good idea to go into camp with just the young guys, but bringing along more young guys aint that much smarter. i would look for a seasoned vet who can be an insurance policy and/or mentor to continue to help them get wiser (kerry collins, kurt warner type)… and NOT unproven or scorned starters (delhomme byron leftwich or derek anderson etc.) to just compete for the starting job and give us whatever is left which is probably average at best.
but hopefully all goes well and the RIGHT man gets the starting job next season for the JETS

  118. You guys that are alreayd giving up on Gholsten are ridiculous. Give the guy a chance before you start “drafting his replacement.” Unless you never played a sport, you should know it takes time to learn a system at a new level. I can make a list as long as this thread of first round draft picks who had bad first seasons and still became great players. Mario Williams had a dismal rookie season despite being on the field for 95% of the snaps. Now hes one of the best d-ends in the NFL. Give Gholsten a chance, please.

  119. asomugha is a FA??? if that is so, that is a no brainer for the JETS front office, but he probably is gonna command “best CB in the league” money! but if not him i was definately thinking along the lines of litto sheppard, who is a pro bowl player and is on a crowded CB eagles team.

and whats with people saying…………………. “gholston is no the player he used to be!!!????”
what the hell the guy is probably younger than you and just came off a bad ROOKIE season while being underutilized……… and he’s not who he use to be, lol!!?? the kid probably just picked up a football 2 yeras before college….he’s still learning, you cant hold that against him. some of your guys pateince level is amazing! well guys the whole entire JETS DEFENSE aint what it used to be if thats the case, lmao

  120. jesusrevis,

you took the words right out of my mouth, lol. i could imagine these guys sreaming gholstons name draft day (most of you were!)…and right after he takes his first snap….”HE’S A BUST!!”…lmao
i guess you cant reason woth eveyrbody just like you cant plaese everybody, hopefully the guy gets his act together under the right tootilage in the next year or two…and then the critics can sum ti up and say ALL you want about the guy…thats a fair enough time right??

  121. pardon the typos……old school laptop, lol

  122. We need Jack baurer

  123. I going out on a limb here a big one but here I go If REX comes here i think GHOLSTON will crack the top ten in sacks this year…How can anyone condemn Gholston when our coaching staff rarely had him on the field…Mangineous overwhelmed the kid having him try to play coverage(NOT happen’n to green to read NFL offenses) and tried downlineman with him (EVEN THOUGH HE HAS THE STRENGTH GHOLSTON LACKS THE HANDS AND TECHNIQUE TO PLAY DL YET>>>)…GHOLSTON needs to be out in space, moving around, picking holes to run thorugh and kill QB and RB”S…YOU heard it hear first GHOLSTON is on the field day one and is a top LB in sacks next season…Some players just need the creativity of the coach to get the best outta them…REX has that mind…

  124. swizzle81 and JesusRevis are right. It’s too early to bust Gholston. He’s learning a new position. Remember, DeMarcus Ware struggled his rookie season too.

Adding Nnamdi Asomugha via Free Agency plus Inside Linebacker like Aaron Curry, James Laurinaitis, Rey Maualuga or Brandon Spikes.

  125. Dean even if Favre doesn’t come back ASOMUGHA would kill our cap…How can we sign him when we have alot more needs than CB…IF we did we would have no room for other free agents and signing our draft picks….Asomugha is scheduled to make 11 mill this year as a RAIDER and 14.6 million for 2010….AL DAVIS will franchise him anyways so probably not even an option….

  126. Drafting Knowshon Moreno makes a ton of sense. He will probably be there at pick 17. If Favre retires, that would free up enough money to sign1 bigtime free agent. That free agent without question to target would be NNAMDI ASOMUGHA! Unless he is franchised I would do all I could to get him to NY. Also, Mike Lombardi said on NFL network that B-Schott and Rex Ryan are the favorites for the Jets job.

  127. I really hope Schott’s not a serious candidate. I mean, if we don’t get Rex Ryan then firing Mangini was a waste. Basically, we would have landed Rob Ryan as our DC with Mangini at the helm - not the Browns!

If we can’t afford Nnamdi, I’m hoping that a Top-10 caliber CB, S or ILB that falls to Jets and we can trade up to grab another late 1st round or early 2nd round pick - possibly a Beanie Wells or Knowshon Moreno.

  128. Dean I dont think we go running back this year we have 5 on our roster…caulcrick, woodhead, chatman, washington, and jones…with the new HC they probably are going to draft a QB think about atlanta and baltimore new HC new quarterback and we all know how this is a mimmick league…We need to trade L.COLES to miami and go after a free agent wide receiver because i dont think they will draft #1 for a wide receiver…I keep preaching about DRE KIRK PATRICK CB maybe he will find a spot on the roster this year..

  129. First thing we need is a Head Coach. Someone who can control a game and knows about talent.

Then we need that coach to get rid of Schottenheimer and Sutton.

We need an Offensive Coordinator who knows how to keep the opposition on it’s heels. Schottenheimer was obvious in his formations and backwards in his play-calling. Once his first series script was over, he was a waste. His father must have been sending him the script.

Our Defense can stop the run. We have to add players that will help us bring some pressure. Asomugha would be a beautiful thing, opposite Revis.

Percy Harvin would be a great pick in the draft. Best all-around threat that i’ve seen in awhile. He dominated the championship game vs Oklahoma. Speed Kills. This does not mean that we shouldn’t get a big target, as well.

I would like to see a punter who has a strong leg but, knows how to angle the ball out of bounds.

I would like to see a kicker who can kick it into the end zone on kickoffs. Doesn’t it make sense to keep two kickers, if one could do this, and three (not four) QB’s on the roster.

  130. switch to a one-gap scheme.we don’t have the nast-powerfully D-line like NE. Trade Bryan Thomas, go after Chris canty if DAL don’t franchise tag him. Need a ILB, Carlos Dansby is available (if they don’t franchise him again). Safety, Landry from BAL is also a free agent, etc. Suggs, etc. There’s also Igor Olshansky, etc. CB Bryan Mcfadden from PITT. D’brick has been disappointing, been drafting so high. Draft a good WR, one who really doesn’t need time to develop. Might have to draft another edgerusher, this draft id loaded, again.

  131. Boldin is pretty much the same as Cotchery, only way, way, way more talent around him. For Keller, they should really work him

  132. I know I’m an idiot, but here’s what I would try too do, in theory, anyway!!! Trade Coles for a round #3 pick, trade Baker for a 4th, or 5th round pick, and then trade up in the draft, with K.C., St. Louis, or Cleveland, and grab Michael Crabtree!!! I know it’s a longshot, but Crabtree would look mighty good in green!!!

  133. I am all for trading up for Crabtree. He may not be a speed demon, but he has great hands and in my opinion the best player in this years draft. He is penciled in at #4 to the Seahawks in several Mock Drafts. So the Jets would have to get up to the 2 or 3 spot in order to get him.

  134. Obviously we need a QB and WR on offense and a a CB on defense. I say we look for a QB via free agency or trade (Cassell or Anderson) rather than in the draft because the top three college QB’s will be gone by #17. I think we hope one of the top three WR drops to us at #17 (if not we go with a CB) and than go with the other position in round 2.

  135. I would love to get some big time free agents again but after the spending spree last season I dont think that would happen again. I would lovve for us to concentrate on getting Nnamdi Asomugha the DB from oakland. We would have 2 shutodwn corners and a more experience Lowery playing the Nickel. Another need as mentioned a lot is just a BIG WR. Another key need would be a fast DE that can get to the QB a little quicker than Ellis and Coleman can.

  136. Ratliff is who I think may have a chance at being the next Tom Brady in Brian’s Shott’s system. If Clements beats him out in the QB battle (which I doubt) then he gets the chance.

My point has been you don’t know what you have unless you give them a chance to play. I am not against drafting a QB this year. But I don’t expect this rookie QB to win the battle in camp. He would sit and learn year 1.

NO RETREAD QB’s ever again for the Jets! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More Rex Ryan Info.: This is the best yet!:

Defense wins, and he knows how to coach it.

“The numbers say I’ve done a decent job,” Ryan said. “If a team wants to stop somebody, all you have to do is look at my track record. If we don’t get them stopped in the first year, it will probably be the first time we don’t get them stopped in my career, going back through college, whatever. . . . I’ll get my time, and whoever gets me will get a guy who is a real football coach and not a pretender.”

  137. Heres my crazy bold idea…
Hire Ryan to keep the 3-4…
    favre gone
    barton gone
    Law gone
    Franks Gone
Cut Poteat and Barrett and bring in Fresh blood to the secondary

Look for a trade partner for L.Coles and Thomas Jones (I wouldnt mind keeping Jones, but coles)
Try to put a package together for Tomlison…Maye Coles and 3rd rounder or Jones and a 3rd rounder….
    Sign Asumoghu (spelled that wrong)
    1st round pick a WR

QB-Ratliff or Clemens (battle in TC)
    RB-Tomlison
    Leon–Get him more involved
(put him and LT in some split back formations both in the backfield together)
    FB-Richardson
TE-Keller,BAker (personally i think baker can go to)
    WR-Cotchery
WR-Let Clowney and our 1st round pick fight out for the top spot…But Coth would get it by default until one of them prove better
    WR-Stuckey
    O-Line–Stays the same

    defense
Coleman (I would like him gone, but money issues wont let us get someone better),Jinx,Ellis
    Thomas Gholston Harris and Pace
Gholston in there because i Think Ryan would put him in situations to succeed and use him in the areas he knows hes good at
Revis and Os-i cant spell his last name
    Lowery on the slot
bring in some fresh non new england blood for depth
(wouldnt mind trying Justin Miller again as depth at a cheaper price)
    Rhodes
Elam or a draft pick spot (2nd or 3rd (whatever not used for LT)

Then use the rest of the draft for dpeth on the lines

  138. for the draft, trying to be somewhat realistic on who will be available at pick 17, i think the best available players will be DE or ILB. i.e. Brian Orakpo (Texas) Gerald McCoy (oklahoma) Ray Malauga (USC) or James Laurentinas ( PennSt). Find a guy that can play up or down like demarcus ware.

I woudl love to pick up Percy Harvin from florida too, he is a playmaker.

Drop Jones and get a power back to compliment Leon’s speed, it ovbiously works in the NFL just looks at the playoff teams.

Drop Baker, Keller will only get better, and trade Coles for a faster WR

Revis is solid at CB and pick up a SS.

I think i smell a superbow…….. no maybe jsut the playoffs

  139. GANGGREEN,

I agree that runningback isn’t the highest priority, but we’ll need a replacement for Thomas Jones eventually; and I’m thinking Beanie Wells may be the best possible player available at seventeen. And, some mock drafts are projecting Knowshon Marino to fall to early second. You know how Tannenbaum likes to trade up?

That said, I prefer a ILB, CB or S in the first and second rounds. Hopefully, one of the Top-10 studs will fall to us in the 1st round. Marino would be a steel at the top of the second, otherwise I grab and ILB, like Darry Beckwith LSU, or CB, like Darius Butler, with the 53rd overall pick.

Here’s wide receivers with 2nd round projections:

    Darrius Heyward-Bey - Maryland

    Juaquin Iglesias - Oklahoma

    Derrick Williams - Penn State

    Kenny Britt - Rutgers

    Louis Murphy - Florida

Also, Jets could grab Austin Collie BYU in the 3rd round. However, I would prefer S Nic Harris Oklahoma… that is, if S Taylor Mays USC doesn’t fall to Jets in the 1st round. If he does, grab him… or ILB James Laurinaitis or CB Malcolm Jenkins!!!

    Dreaming, I know!

  140. HAKEEM NICKS GET HIM IN ROUND 2
