Buzz: Rex Ryan the New Favorite?
First Brian Schottenheimer, now Rex Ryan? Dave Hutchinson reports in the Star-Ledger this morning that a source has told him that after the team’s top officials meetings with Rex Ryan for five hours yesterday, he might be their first choice.
Jets owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum met with Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan for five hours Sunday in Baltimore and the two sides hit it off in a big way, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting.
That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to speak for Ryan or the Jets.
Ryan, whose 3-4 defense has forced eight turnovers in two postseason games and ranked second in the NFL this past season, also interviewed with the Rams Sunday. He’s the eighth candidate interviewed by the Jets.
“Rex likes the owner,” the person said. “He was impressed that the owner flew down to meet with him. The Jets were very serious. I can tell you that Rex is leaning toward the Jets and the Jets are leaning toward Rex.
“In fact, the Jets told Rex that they’re prepared to wait until after the Super Bowl to hire him if they have to.”
With Brian Schottenheimer already in house and waiting and Spagnuolo now out of the playoffs, their only serious candidate remaining is Rex Ryan, and he’s sticking around. Spags will be meeting with teams again this week I’m sure, but Ryan might be the best fit for the Jets, even though it might be risky while other promising candidates get snapped up quickly this week.
Hat tip to Thomas D. for sending this on!

Ryan is also interviewing with the Rams… Can the Rams offer anything tht the jets can’t match or exceed ?
How will you feel if the Rams beat us out of Rex Ryan ????
Peter King reports that nobody really wants the Rams job. Their owner died, and the heirs are in the process of selling the team. The sale won’t take place until mid-season the earliest. Who would want a job where it is quite likely the new owner would clean house? Who would work under such a coach as a coordinator with no job security?
If the rumors that B. Schott, Rex Ryan and Spags are the top 3 candidates, I’d prefer giving Rex Ryan a shot. But it definitely makes me wonder why they fired Mangini if they were just going to hire another rookie HC.
Jason P.
Thank you, you have made my day.
TimNC, they didn’t fire Mangini because they wanted a more experienced coach, they fired him because they wanted to upgrade to a better one. They felt they had seen enough of him and wanted someone else, regardless of his experience. Experience is overrated — if you do things wrong or poorly you are just experienced in doing them that way. It’s only helpful if you are good to begin with and building on it.
Good points Razor. Mangini got fired because he couldn’t motivate his troops to win just two games after beating the consensus #1 team in the league at the time.
A rookie coach doesn’t bother me so much. In a lot of ways, it’s a better choice than even a Super Bowl winning re-tread. Nobody has won the big one with two teams.
Ryan vs Mangini
Mangini believes in keeping the offense in fron of the Defense. Ryan believes in masive preesure. HEd have the tools in JEnkins, Ellis, Pace, Harris and BT. They probably need to take a cover CB in round 1 so they can play a lot of man to man. Im aslo hoping Rex stays with the power running game. DOnt be shocked if Boller gets brought in as a vet QB
D-Rex looks like the best fit for the Jets and the way the team was built by Johnson’s $$$$( smash mouth, stop the run and run the ball) Secondly, Ryan doesn’t threaten Tannenbaum’s Job so I would be very surprised is he is not hired.
Guys, Tannenbaum’s job is threatened regardless of who is hired.
His team disappointed and the HC, his friend, got fired. If things don’t improve, in spite of a tougher schedule and a healthy Pats team, Tannenbaum is next.
If things fall apart, e.g., a losing record, it will be after next season. But Tanny is now under the gun and will have to produce a team that pleases its fans and creates a buzz any owner with a new stadium and PSLs needs.
We will see how good Tanny works under pressure.
harlan
This is the first rumor in a while that I hope is true. I missed the games this weekend, but Ryan has never left me scratching my head. I’d be excited to see how he would lead this team. I doubt Boller would come with him considering how often he screwed Ryan’s defenses, but has anyone considered Leftwich? He has done well for the Steelers. I know he is another injury prone Marshall QB, but we have an offense in place that is reasonably solid. Anyone know about his arm strength?
JustAGreenGuy, I think I’d rather give KC another shot then see Leftwich playing. He’s pretty much completely immobile, which is a major reason the Jags cut him in the first place. He is big and has a good arm though.
Are you guys serious Kyle Boller? I’d rather get a Jeff Garcia than that Pac-10 Bust! Rex is not going to bring in any of the “many” scrubs that the Ravens have to offer offensively! Bart Scott,Ray Lewis, and Dawun Laundry well now your talking.
sexy rexy is the man…
and i do believe that both ray lewis and terrell suggs (franchised last year) will be free agents….
i dont think the ravens will resign both and maybe this is hopeful thinking but they prolly wont resign ray lewis… who will maybe follow ryan to the jets…
being extremely optimisitic but harris and lewis would be dangerous in the middle…
When can they hire Rex? Can they hire him now and allow him to finish coaching Baltimore or is there a rule that he can’t accept a job until Baltimore’s season is over? I would hate to see us wait for him only to see other candidates go elsewhere and we lose him to the Rams or somewhere else.
Can we all please agree not to refer to him as “sexy Rexy” once he’s hired?
TIM-I agree. I’ve never been a big Leftwich fan, and am very curious to see KC and Ratliff battle it out. Just wanted to offer another viable option, who imo is probably the best low priced free agent QB coming up.
jagg – leftwich is farve lite ..i’ve always been a fan he got a bum deal in j’ville and atl but i kind of don’t wanna see him as our starter
anyway i’m definately hoping for rex to be the man for us
JAGG-
Leftwich has plenty of arm strength. The knock on him, aside from being immobile, is a very slow motion/release and some accuracy issues. His commitment was questioned in Jacksonville when he was dumped, possibly relating to a resistance to work on his mechanics.
If the Jets brass decides to wait on Rex, let’s just hope that Rex chooses to coach the Jets. Otherwise, by the time Rex is eligible to be hired, all of the other potential coaches (e.g. Spags) may have been hired by other clubs.
It would be very interesting to see what Rex can get out of the players currently on the Jets D. I think there is a lot of underutilized talent on the roster. Can Ghoulston become a threat? Can Rhodes return to form?
Having a low priced veteran would be a good idea considering if Favre leaves we have 8 games in the NFL is the most played by a Jets QB.
Does anyone think the groin injury Harris had is the same one he had in training camp? He spent a lot of time on the bike over the summer and it would explain his drop in production.
This is the guy for us Jets fans!!! Rex Ryan is it.
Schotty and Sutton hopefully are packing up maybe Mangini can give them a job. as long as they are not here who gives a s**t!
Zenlaw … I hear where you are coming from, but I think if they’ll be fine. If Rex, Spags, and Schott really are the top 3, you know Schott will still be around, but we’d all hate that.
As for Rex, he’s only interviewed with the Rams, but according to King, the Rams are close to Frazier. Spags is possible with Detroit, but they also like Schwarz.
So Rex would have to choose the Rams at the end, and Spags would have to choose Detroit – two very dubious possibilties, for the Jets to be left holding the Schott, I mean, bag.
Thank God!
Rex… If your reading this blog, I am Very Happy that you WANT TO COACH the JETS!!!!!
Jet Fans and I want Coaches that want to coanh the Jets!!!!!
NOW…. Woody and Mike…… CLOSE THE DEAL!!!!!!!
HIRE REX RYAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4 Years $14 Million!!!!!!! Rex Ryan deserves this kind of money!!! Consider it payment to the Ryan Family for the Last Jet Super Bowl as well as the next!!!!
Rangers you get to keep your record!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joe S, you tell them! if Schott and Sutton are still on their payroll for doing nothing, they should pay Ryan anything to come here!!!!
LISTEN UP JET FANS……. NO MORE RETREAD QBs !!!!!!
NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Develope you’re own for once!!!!!!!
Develope one you have drated or will Draft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am SICK of the RETREAD QB’s…. Their loses!!!!! and their RETREADS for a REASON…. They SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO TEAM with a REAL Franchise QB ever lets that QB go!!!! They let them go because they SUCK or are WASHED UP!!!!!
NO MORE…. THAT IS ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let the QB’s currently on the Jets Battle it out for the Starting job or Draft a new one and develop him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder if Rex wore his dad’s Jets SB ring to the interview.
Joe S, you are on a roll, im with you again! i think Rattliff will be great.
Brian Shott needs to STAY as OC…. The young QB’s need to battle it out on Pure Skill without having to learn a new system next season.
Continuity on Offense is VERY IMPORTANT if you want to score points and win games in 2009!!!!
Rex Ryan…. HC
Rob Ryan … DC (will go with his brother if he gets a job or Browns if not)
Brian Shott… OC
Brian Callahan… OL
Mike Westhoff… ST
Plug in other quality coaches for other positions.
This is THE SUPER BOWL WINNING STAFF!!!!!
Any other combination and we break the Rangers record between championships!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YEAH
this is in no response to any comments on this posts but brought up some thoughts from what i have seen lately.
i could understand for perhaps “security” purposes, some of you want to bring in vet qbs. but alot of the names im seeing (leftwich, derek anderson, delhomme etc.) would want starting jobs. But why in the hell do some fans…NOT all…. have a mentality in which we love snooping around in other peoples garbage as if we are homeless? Why in the hell would we go after derek anderson and delhomme when we have 2 qb’s that haven’t even gotten a chance to prove themselves?
Learn to make a name for yourself and not off of someone elses garbage, I guess when any team has somone who starts to play bad, or breakdown mentally, we can count on the jets to pick em up and try and get whatever they have left (favre). Let’s give our homegrown treaures a chance to blossom, last one didn’t turn out so bad (pennington). Stop lookin for chemistry disruptions, strangers to the team that are average at best.
What can delhomme and derek anderson bring to this team that ratliff and possibly clemens aren’t capable of? Who cares about past experiences, for delhomme? That’s team efforts, he hasn’t proved a thing to me AT ALL, and neither has anderson! …or any other available qb for that matter. Haven’t some of you fans learned anything from the patriots and their developement of cassel? ……or were you the same ones saying we should have went after him if he was a FA?
I swear, when some fans go through dissapointing stretches, they tend to have no spine! At least give our guys a chance to prove their not worthy of a starting job, basically throwin them under the bus when they havent given you a reason to. and honestly both have shown some sparks and have made good strides (not so much clemens) showing that they can play. or would you rather them showcase that on a different team, while the jets make big investments on second string quarterbacks. lol
fact of the matter..win now or not….i dont think bringing in any of the names that ive been hearing will put us over the edge or put us in a better predicament than what we are in right now. its that simple
BTW….. Wow did the Giants SUCK yesterday!!!!!
I am going to enjoy listening to all the squealing Giant fans on talk radio today. Giants… the annointed Super Bowl Team for 2008… SUCKED the BIG one YESTERDAY!!!!!! WOW!!!!
This my fellow Jet fans will make my day!!!!!!
I loved the Giants beating NE last season! But this season… the way all the NY Media treated the Jets near the end of the season (especially that Loudmouth team on SNY), I could NOT support the Giants in the playoffs.
I wanted to see the NY Media’s “do no wrong team” the Giants lose!
Now lets see how they turn on the Giants or what BS Excuse they come up with for their loss.
Go ridinmywave…. Keep up the great posts on the QB issue!!!!
Maybe Rex is another rookie HC but his defensive credentials are far superior to those of Mangenius. And his Dad was the D-coordinator for JETS back when the JETS were winners.
Questions: will he bring his brother to be the D-coordinator for JETS? And who will be offensive coordinatior? Not Schott I hope.
WE WANT REX!WE WANT REX!WE WANT REX!WE WANT REX!
If we get Lewis along with DRex, it would not only be incredible, IT WILL BE PHENOMENAL !!!
We would have FIRE (DRex) and BRIMSTONE (Lewis in the locker room), an undeniable combination.
IT would be very much be a fans delight, so I’m positive Johnson would open up his checkbook.
Johnson is not going to fire Tannenbaum, he LOVES him for his $$$$$ savy and has done everything asked of him ( even throwing Pennington/Mangini under the bus).
I encounter Jet Fans who want other Teams Garbage QB’s all the time and it drives me crazy!!!!!
If New England thought like this…. Tom Brady and Matt Cassel would still be unknown back-up QB’s somewhere in the NFL and I don’t think Matt would be on any NFL team. Remember he was a back-up QB in college.
This goes for players at other positions as well. Stop wanting other teams Garbage!!!!!!!
and i see alot of you raising your eye brow at kerry rhodes, completely throwing the guy under the bus after ONE bad year, geez!..everybody in the secondary had bad year, except for revis, but with the corner back position your role and assingments arent as complicated. people like lowery and coleman just got beat in one one scenarios, lol. but it is obvious that NONE of the players liked the playcalling this year, which is leading me to wonder why sutton is still here? but anyway…
i can almost garauntee the main reason for rhodes suspect play this year was due to play calling and terrible defensive scheming. And that will DEFINATELY show at the safety postion if the playcalling is bad.
With more aggresive play calling safeties usually therive more often, what in the hell did you expect the guy to do if the opposing recievers are given ALL DAY to run around, and we rarely press anybody at the line? that causes confusion in the secondary and causes the safeties to be more indesicive in whom to pick up or whom to help out in coverage.
We still need a veteran presence. A Kerry Collins type b4 he showed he could still win. I still like Clemens. If the recievers could catch his passes I have no doubt he would be great. Ratliff has played great, but my concern is… no one blitzes in the preseason. Jack Trudeau used to light up the preseason on 2nd stringers. I think we know how that went. Ratliff has pretty much only done it on third stringers. I have no problem starting one of them, but we have to cover our butts a little.
Joe-
we dont want garbage…we want a kerry collins, byron lefwich type to come in and COMPETE for the starting job…3 way competition and may the best man win…believe me…we all want that to be KC or Ratliffe….
ridinmywave,
Kerry Rhodes is an execllent player and play’s even better when the defense is aggressive.
Rhodes was not the problem. This is another situation where some Jet fans don’t know what they are looking at or don’t pay attention.
Strong Safety and nickle back were the issue in the secondary. Lowrey played very good at times… but he hit a wall at times. He was a rookie and needs time to develop more.
The main issue on defense was teams taking advantage of the Jets Big Linebackers/D Ends trying to cover T Ends down the field. This strategy works great when you get a consistant pass-rush. If you don’t… well you’ve seen what happens.
It’s encouraging that the “reports” about Ryan are all positive. I take it with a grain of salt though. Let’s see how it plays out. I’m hoping we get Ryan. Grimm is my second choice, and if all else fails, I hope we insert Callahan as a stop gap. I would like to see us move on from both of our coordinators.
Joe S, question: I think we all know how much you covet Ryan, and you think we should do everything possible to get him here. You also seem to want Schott as OC. What if Ryan doesn’t want him? Do you still want Ryan?
jim,
You want other teams Garbage and old washed up QB’s.
If you continue to hire Garbage… you will NEVER get a Super Bowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To this point the Jets have proven this to be TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!
Develope you’re own young QB… from the current roster and/or draft a new young QB to develope.
Hey guys. Um, where are we getting this money to sign these free agents you’re talking about if Favre comes back? Remember that we also have to sign draft picks. Favre has to leave in order for us to have the slightest hope of signing anyone.
And though I’m in favor of hiring Rex, there’s no way any of you know what kind of coach he’s going to be. Nor do you know what kind of quarterback Ratliff is. I’m hopeful that the two of them can succeed, but stop acting like you have all the answers. This is all just guesswork at this point.
greenguy,
i definately agree with the veteran presence like a kerry collins! but there isnt any veteran leadership out there, and definately not in leftwhich, or a derek anderson. mayyyyybe, and thats a STRONG maybe in delhomme but he’s on a high horse and i would think of himself as starter more than a tutor. but i would think of someone who has alot of smarts and experience, and wouldnt mind being a tutor and cornerstone for the team(like a warner), rather than someone for self and wants to prove he’s better than the average. any thoughts on whom else?
This is the first news in a while that makes me feel like we are going in the right direction. Ryan is the right candidate for this job. I just hope he keeps Westhoff on the payroll (why wouldn’t he).
joe b, its true none of us have the answers, but its quite simple to say where the answers are NOT and less logical….logically speaking, the answer wouldnt be in any other coach out there, and chances are, i couldnt see the answer lying in any free agent or throw away 2nd string quarterback out there either, sometimes its right under your nose. if some jet fans claim there is nothing to look forward to with ratliff at the helm next year, your telling me leftwhich, delhomme, or derek anderson give us a better chance? i dont think so
Pete57,
I will accept whatever Ryan wants.
But…. Ryan is a smart FB Coach and understands that the best way to win in 2009 with a young QB battle to deal with in Trainning Camp is continuity!!!!!!!!
Plus… a defensive coach understands how effective Brian’s creative and confusing offense can be on defenses. Look at the 2006 Jet offense.
If for some insane reason Favre (Due to Woody’s man crush) is still on this team next season. He will NOT learn a 2nd new system in 2 years and be effective in any way!
MS,
there’s no rule as far as I know, but it is an unwritten code that teams will not make an announcement like that because doing so could deflate the playoff team. The only time I remember it happening is when Parcells came here from the Patriots. That was an especially nasty coaching change and Parcells made it very clear he was leaving the Pats. As a matter of fact, I believe the uncertainty and tension over Parcells’ exit cost the Pats in the Superbowl against the Packers that year.
The Ed(itor)- We can’t get Ryan’s brother cuz he’s probably going with Mangini to Cleveland.
This news makes me happy, and since the Denver job is taken ours is the best job left so hopefully now the Jets have their choice of Spags and Ryan.
Ridin- We could trade for a guy name Chad who was bright jk. Leftwich to me is like Patrick Ramsey at this point. He is worth a work out. We wouldn’t trade for Anderson and screw Delhomme. Remember how KC looked two preseasons ago? Remember how he looked when he was pressured? There aren’t blitzes in the preseason and Favre got whalloped a couple times this year. Ratliff has potential, but needs to show me a lot more before he gets my vote to start. Right now KC is my man.
Dungy’s out at Indy. Hopefully they’ll stay in-house with his replacement.
It is supposed to be Jim Caldwell. They announced it last year.
I’m fairly certain it falls under tampering to offer a contract to someone actively coaching another team. An interview can be requested and the other team is obliged to grant interview requests for a position that represents a career advancement, but no contract can be offered until that team’s season is over.
I have mixed feelings about the veteran QB issue. I’m pretty sure the data has demonstrated that young QBs have the most success when anointed as the starter in camp and are given all the first team reps. I could certainly see bringing in a vet as a presence in camp, mentor, emergency starter, but wouldn’t want to see Anderson, Leftwich, etc., barely win the job from KC or Ratliff, only to play the same mediocre football they played on their former teams. The Jets would have to be very confident that one of these discards actually has what it takes to win (ala the Drew Brees situation) in order to start him. Failing that, I’d rather see the team develop KC, Ratliff, someone in the draft, or young prospect acquired from another team.
Jake Delhomme
Did anyone forget Jake, he is most likely gone from Carolina, I would love to have him. He is a free agent this offseason Sign him, draft a good corner and sign Ray Lewis. We are set for next year! If we release a couple veterans like Barrett and Baker and let Favre walk we are supposed to have close to $20 Million in space.
i always thought that ryan will be the new h.c. relax mike t is a real good gm and he knows what he is doing go jets
Jake Delhomme…. Did you see how many INT’s this guy threw in a playoff game???
This Guy is a washed-up and Garbage as defined by the above posts.
Develope a young QB!
hire either REX or SPAGNUOLO……BELIEVE it or not,Im TOTALLY not against bringing SHOTTY back for ONE more year just for the reason being that Im COUNTING on FAVRE retiring! ( Im sorry to all you BRETT BELIEVERS out there, but if you HAVE EYES and WATCHED the games, then you SEE why GREEN BAY let him go…….its over……he’s done.) I have been a full BELIEVER in KELLEN CLEMENS and think that he WILL be our starting quaterback THIS year. If we hire REX RYAN like everyone is hoping for(even me a little…I think he could be a good fit (he DOES know the 3-4) then he will probably remember that game last year ,IN BALTIMORE, where KELLEN got his FIRST n.f.l start and almost led the J-E-T-S to a historic comeback. Trailing by TWO TD’S in the 4th quarter, KELLEN led the JETS back. They actually had a FEW chances to tie the game after the two-minute mark, but Justin McCareins dropped a SURE touchdown pass and then HIS deflection led to Ray Lewis’s pick in the end zone. CLEMENS passed for 260 yards with 165 going to COTCHERY on 7 receptions. He was also sacked 4 times. REMEMBER,all this was before we went out and got FANECA and WOODY,didnt have a fullback,AND PETE KENDALL WASNT even on that line! What can he do WITH some protection and players? I know,I know, people are gonna scream RATLIFF’s name and to be totally honest with you(as much as I support KELLEN)it should be an open competition in CAMP and may the BEST QUARTERBACK win!
all I am saying is that I dont think we need to draft a quaterback this year. We NEED a TALL,FAST,WIDE RECIEVER with HANDS! and then let REX spend the REST of the pick on DEFENSE (ie. SAFETY,CORNERBACK,LINEBACKERS and LINE)
We do need a BURNER with hands at receiver! We should draft one!
L. Coles should remain a Jet! He like Chad is a Trure Jet and should finnish his career as a Jet! Look what happened when you cast off Chad this year. I will take Chad back in the future should he become available. In a mentor, back-up or coaching role.
Brian’s Pre-Favre offense featured a large number of 3 receiver sets. We need ONLY to add via the draft a BURNER Receiver with hands to plug into our high quality receiver roster.
Jeff,
This is exactly what I’m talkin about, delhomme hasn’t done squat to prove himself as an elite starting quarterback since his being in the league and has no obvious advantages over our qb’s at this given time.
What is with some of you people and your search for fools gold? Their are not or will not be on their previous teams for a reason! Have some dignity, a panther fan would laugh in your face!
k.c.
Does that stand for kellen clemens??? Very good points though. Let kellen and ratliff battle it out. either one would be fine by me. Just dont bring anybody else in.
no….just coincidence.
Question: If the Jets front office did get Rex Ryan to Head Coach the Jets would the Jets organization owe Baltimore anything like a draft pick for taking the teams DC?
Jets-Fan-4-Life,
NO!
When Cowher became an impossibility, I quickly jumped on the Rex Ryan bandwagon. We have all said that this team and the defense need an identity. Ryan’s defenses blitz and get to the QB. They control the gaps and make it hard to run. Is it any surprise that 3 of the 4 teams left are all known for their blitzes? Moreover, Philly, the Steelers and Ravens have all been playoff regulars, with 3 Super Bowl appearances and 2 wins since 2000. I want to see an aggressive defense that gives the team its identity, like the Sack Exchange did in the 80s. Ryan can do that and he has a fiery, Walt Michaels-esque (hopefully without the booze) demeanor.
As for the veteran QB issue, I’m a Leftwich fan. Yes, he’s immobile. But, he has a cannon arm (not just average) and has as much potential as any available QB in the market (including the draft, where IMO only Sanchez would be NFL ready). He wore out his welcome in Jax, primarily because of injuries. But he looks healthy now and, fwiw, I thought he looked better than Big Ben in the Redskins game where he was 7-10 for 129 yards and a TD. He was getting progressively better each season with Jax, but injuries really hampered him. Don’t get me wrong, I want Ratliff to beat out KC and realize his potential, but I think that Leftwich has plenty left in his tank. He’s only 29, 6-5, and has a cannon arm. He still has an NFL future and would be a good vet to compete with the young ‘uns.
What happened to your love of Freeman?
I’m not sure the Jets would want to draft a QB without knowing what they have on the roster with KC, Ratliff and Ainge. Plus, the only QB prospect that I want to draft would be Josh Freeman. Don’t get me wrong, I like Stafford, Bradford and Sanchez, but only Sanchez has a chance to last to 17 and is he really better than any of the guys on the roster? Freeman, on the other hand, has a unique skill set and, if I were an OC, I’d love the opportunity to try to develop him. I have a feeling that he could have a Flacco-like rise after he gets to the Combine (over 6-5 guys with his mobility and unbelievable arm strength, even on the run, are usually scout darlings). But, if he lasts to the 3rd round, I’d take a chance on him. He’s too unique a prospect for a team that needs a QB.
JAGG, lol. I don’t think Freeman is NFL-ready. But, what an amazing skill set he has!!! I’m glad that I’m not a GM, because I’d probably just draft him at 17 or trade down to try to nab him later in the 1st round. I’d sign a vet, like Leftwich, keep Ratliff and jettison KC and Ainge.
I think Rex is the pick, hopefully we could get a verbal commitment this week and wait until the Ravens run is over (which could easily be super bowl champs at this point).
People need to be realistic about free agent signings, we have zero cash. Anyone know how much cap room we would gain next year if Favre retires (not cut)?
Sack,
Did you see the throw Leftwich made yesterday to Limas Sweed? 40 yards in the air, bounced off Sweed’s hands, but a thing of beauty nonetheless. I wouldn’t mind getting Leftwich, I was really impressed with the way he palyed in that Redskin game and yesterday.
The cap next year is $123 million, with that and the known releases, and contract expires I believe we will be some where at $12 million under.
Sack- we don’t have a 3rd rounder. 2nd round would be our last shot without trades. I like what I have seen of Freeman too. Still think KC is better than you think.
Plus I hear he is smart, which I’m a big fan of in a QB.
Jets-Fan-4-Life,
No. Ryan would be making an upward move from Defensive Coordinator to Head Coach if he comes to the Jets.
If it was a lateral move, i.e. Def. Coord. to Def. Coord, and he was still under contract to the Ravens, then yes we could be subject to compensation. Most teams get around this by giving the title of “Assistant Head Coach” to make it an upward move.
ramble, I missed the pass to Sweed. Like I said, I think the real issue with Leftwich is health. He throws a great deep ball and has good touch on his other throws. He had a completion pct. a bit under 60% with Jax, he doesn’t have a quick release (but, I wouldn’t call his release slow either) and he’s immobile. But, it’s hard for me to believe that he’s done at 29. The doubters should check out his highlights from the Skins game, which he sealed, on the road, on Monday Night football (he came in at 10-6 and led 2 TD drives).
http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80c359cd
Pass to Sweed was very nice.
JAGG, KC just doesn’t fit my personal profile for a drop-back passer (6-4+ with pocket poise). He just looks uncomfortable in the pocket, which may cause or make worse his accuracy problems. But, he does have a live arm, good mobility and maybe he would look better with the Jets revamped OL. On the other hand, I think he could be very productive in a West Coast offense…maybe we can peddle him to Gruden. He collects QBs like stamps. If Ryan wants a Flacco-esque QB, Ratliff or Freeman fit that profile better than KC.
The 50-yard deep out that Leftwich threw in the Skins game was pretty nice, too. If he’s healthy, he can be productive and, IMO, that’s all the Jets need to be at or near the 10-win level with their running game and the anticipated improved defense under Ryan. Over 10 wins will take very good QB play and Leftwich has the potential to get there, while KC and Ratliff are wild cards. Also, I don’t see Byron as a big INT guy and, even though I liked Favre, I’d prefer to see less than an INT per game from our starter next season.
Yeah I could live without seeing 9 ints in a 5 game stretch ever again.
JAGG-
Pretty sure we do have the Saints 3rd Rounder for Vilma. We have to give them back the 4th we took last year but we get a 4th from the Redskins for Kendall.
SD99-
I don’t necessarily dislike Leftwich. I just think his slow wind-up and lack of mobility limit the type of offense you can run. If used the way he was in Pittsburgh or the way Flaco was in Baltimore – manage the game but attack deep frequently enough to keep defenses honest – maybe he could be successful. Being released may also have humbled him enough to solve some of the arrogance issues rumored in Jacksonville. If he, or any other QB, comes in and blows everyone away, great. I just don’t want a vet who’s good enough to prevent the development of a young QB ( or prevent the Jets from drafting someone like Flaco or your boy Ryan) but not good enough to carry a team deep into the playoffs. That’s a little too familiar.
Subway- You’re right. I just remember we had to trade our 3rd for Favre.
“Yeah I could live without seeing 9 ints in a 5 game stretch ever again.”
Or nearly half that many in one playoff game ;)
haha yeah hopefully niether.
If the Jets hire Rex Ryan they will have come full circle!
Does anyone remember who was the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach of the 1969 Jets?…yep, Buddy Ryan!
Go Jets!
A Ryan will get the Jets their next Super Bowl.
How about that!
If they would have hired Buddy Ryan after they strangly fired Walt Michaels instead of hiring Joe Walton.
A Ryan would have won the Jets a 2nd Super Bowl in the 1983 to 1986 range. The sack exchange still had life then. Hess messed that one up.
Will Woody and Mike mess this one up????
Hire Rex Ryan Immediately!
Please no Ainge talk when considering viable QB’s. I would rather have Rex Grossman than Ainge. I believe a battle between kc and ratliff is best. Ainge should be cut.
How do you know how Ainge will performe?
I looked at some film of him on the internet. It appears to me that he has size, a strong and accurate arm. 3 of 4 tools that are important in the NFL. He may not be ready for a couple of years as this past year was a wash out for him.
Granted that is all I know about him. I never saw him play in College.
I think Ratliff would win the battle against Clements unless he learned to sit in the pocket longer. His problem in 2007 and in the pre-season was that he looks to bail out of the pocket too soon. Meaning he hates to get hit.
I think the next Jet QB is on the Roster.
subwayfare, Leftwich’s wind up isn’t that slow…he’s deliberate. Check out Tom Brady or St. Chad. Neither has the quick release of Peyton or Kurt Warner. He does lack mobility, but his legs weren’t right coming out of Marshall. I think he may have had enough time off to heal and deal with the arrogance issues. He’s played very well as a Steeler and, in the Skins game, ran the offense MUCH better than Big Ben. I’m a big believer in the vertical offense opening the running game. One good thing, Ratliff, KC and Leftwich all have the arm to complete the deep out. Leftwich is fearless in the pocket, we don’t know how Ratliff will be under fire and we do know that KC is a bit skittish. So, I’ll beat the drum for Leftwich, but Freeman’s skill set is real unique. I’ve posted this before, but a 60 yarder with the flick of the wrist while running left is Elway-esque:

Being a longtime Vols fan I can tell you I have watched , ughh, all of his games and he is not clutch. He injured that pinky playing pick up basketball during the season then said he broke it in practice. He is more of a Bball player like his uncle Danny than a football player. The only reason he started was that his family contributed money to the school. He is not NFL material.
SD99-
Freeman’s arm is pretty impressive and you have to like his size and athleticism.
Again, I’m not so down on Leftwich in an offense that plays to his strengths. I watched that Skins game and was pleasantly surprised. There’s just something about bringing in another very good but not great Marshall QB while young talent goes undeveloped that gives me the willies.
Rumor has it Ratliff is the QB they want…
KELLEN has a CANNON for an ARM!?
lmfao off at Boller.
