News: Seconds of Spags?
While the coaching search kicked off two weeks ago, team owner Robert Wood Johnson was out of the country for the initial proceedings, and Johnson missed his chance to meet with Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo. With the Giants now eliminated from the playoffs, it sounds as if Spags could be back in Florham Park as soon as today.
Spagnuolo is likely to get an audience with Woody Johnnson – just as Schottenheimer and Bill Callahan did – perhaps as early as today. Johnson, remember, was out of town when Callahan, Schottenheimer and Spagnuolo interviewed the first time and he met with those two Jets coaches when he returned. Spagnuolo would be getting the same treatment.
So here’s the deal. Spags is making his way to visit some other teams for a second talk this week. Rex Ryan is stuck in the playoffs. If the team has their guy, they are going to get him as soon as possible, for stability and PR’s sake, along with not letting him get snatched by another team. So the team wants to make an announcemnt as soon as possible.
Spags is the last lead candidate for the owner to meet. So if Johnson likes the cut of his jib he could override whatever Tannenbaum thinks (the bad interview talk) and the team could announce Spags, Schott or Callahan as early as this week.
If no announcement comes shortly, then you can assume that Rex Ryan is likely the one to take the job after his playoff run ends.

BASSETT,
IT WAS REPORTED IN THE PAPERS THAT THE JETS WERE WILLING TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE SUPER BOWL TO GET REX RYAN. WHY TAKE SECONDS WHEN YOU CAN GET THE FIRST CHOICE?????
ALL 3 CHOICES YOU MENTION MAKE ME WANT TO BARF ON MY WORTHLESS 2009 PLAYOFF TICKETS.
NO SPAGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He will FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HIRE REX RYAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there anyway to turn comments off some threads? I mean, we should centralize all the Rex Ryan discussion to one locale. Otherwise every new posting about the new HC is gonna read…
“HIRE REXY! HE’S the new HC of the JETS!!!
I HATE SCHOTT… and SUTTON too!!”
You know, stuff like that. It just gets a bit repetitive, but everyone should be given a fair chance to speak their mind, one of the best things about this blog.
Otherwise keep the posts coming. Every bloody little detail makes the work day go by faster! You guys rock.
Nothin’s More Sexy Than Rexy!!!
If I have to hear how Spags will ‘FAIL’ one more time, I am done!!!!
Ban the exclamation point.
and upper case.
Thought for the Day-
The last offensive based head coach we had was Kotite.
Still want Shotty? This whole thing has that Kotite feel to it.
I’m going to throw up.
You guys think it’s bad now, imagine what the posts will be like if the Jets DON’ T hire Ryan.
Joe S – what is your “Spags will fail” opinion based on?
Editor … i guess you didn’t take your pills today … glad to see your caps lock key works … now turn it off. You wanted Mangini fired, now face the music.

Umm ok.
An the “papers” always get it right … don’t they? They’re never the schills for competing interoffice factions? (Rolling eyes)
If Rex is their guy, then they will have to wait however long it’s gonna take, no surprise there.
WHY TAKE SECONDS WHEN YOU CAN GET THE FIRST CHOICE?????
So who would that be? I am telling you if an announcement is made this week, it’s not for ryan … that’s it.
ALL 3 CHOICES YOU MENTION MAKE ME WANT TO BARF ON MY WORTHLESS 2009 PLAYOFF TICKETS.
I’m sorry that the mention of coaching candidates that are reported frontrunners from your “papers” makes you want to throw up.
Take some pepto for any stomach issues, midol for any menstrual cramps.
To All-
Please contribute to the discussion rather than repost the same stuff again and again in CAPS and EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!
Being louder doesn’t make an argument any smarter.
Bassett has it right. If the Jets do not hire a coach this week, then it is obvious that they are waiting on Ryan.
Also, we really need to dispense with the CAPS and !!! on this blog. It’s like shouting people.
Thank you so much Bassett– I used to read the comments and contribute to the converstation, but the past couple weeks it has taken an ESPN.com feel. I just ignore them completely.
I support Rex Ryan, but who knows– so many great coordinators fail. We have to remember the coach is a CEO, and guy who has to overlook the entire team, not just create great gameplans on one side of the ball.
Bassett, Question: Do you agree with my thinking below?
You wrote, “So if Johnson likes the cut of his jib he could override whatever Tannenbaum thinks…”
I think Tannenbaum has to resign if his decision is overridden by Woody. He was made to fire Eric. He did the interviews. He will be fired if things don’t work out anyway. If he settles for a guy he has doubts about his credibility will be gone.
OTOH, if he resigns without saying anything, especially if the Jets go downhill (easier than the alternative), his reputation is enhanced and he may have as easy a time as Mangini finding new work.

Everybody is a rex ryan expert…..does anyone have any ideas on his offensive ties in the league….cause as far as i’m concerned the ravens offense has sucked ever since they moved from cleveland…..even their super bowl year……is schotty a shoe in to lead the offense?….is that why they like rex so much??…..anyone have any ideas?
Knowing what I know about Tannenbaum, he’s not going to voluntarily walk out of any job. I have to imagine that he’ll do whatever it takes to stay in his place, but i think he knows he’s on shaky ground. tannenbaum has to realize that even though he’s done some good things, he’s got a good gig that will be hard for him to come by anywhere else in the league.
i think that tannenbaum is looking for someone who can win, but i think he’s also looking for someone who he can keep control of … someone like cowher would pose a serious threat to his relevance … a first time coach though … he’d need the personnel help.
Bassett
Is there any chance that Rob Ryan might come to New York if the Jets sign his brother from the same mother. If not who do you think it’s going to be? Will it be a guy from Baltimore, or can it be Crennel?
And I’m not sold on Ryan even though out of all the guys the Jets interviewed, he is by far the most equipped for the job.
nyckage, i may be wrong but im pretty sure it was announced Rob Ryan is now with mangini and the browns.
I like Spags, I dont like the thought of going back to the 4-3 because then all we have down to revamp the def has been for naught. Also it would make me upset that we got rid of Vilma due to him not fitting in a 3-4 only to revert less than a year later.
hire rex ryan for hc of the ny jets!
wait for him and make him an offer he can’t refuse!
TOON2388, i explained that two weeks ago and you guy’s don’t want me keep repeating myself.
Spags is a NY Media creation and was only DC for 2 years.
Ryan… Football is in his blood (NY Jet Super Bowl Blood). Been a coach on the Raven defense for 10 years (DC & DL Coach) and that defense has been great for 10 years. Knows how to get the most out of a 3 – 4 defense personnel which is what the Jets have. If you go back to a 4 – 3… the defense will be average at best for at least 3 years because the Jets will be in CAP Hell while converting.
Any other questions?

Brian Billick was supposed to be the offensive guru! How did that work out??? Billick fans for Jet HC are in la la land!
Good points Bassett, hopefully the Jets do not hire a coach this week, which would point all signs being towards Ryan. I do not think he is a savior of any kind but is the best of whats out there and fits with what the Jets have in personnel on defense. Making Spags the HC will be a head scratcher, if he makes the Jets D switch back to a 4-3., it will set the team back another year or 2.
On Boland’s bog today:
“… I remember meeting Ryan last summer – coincidentally at Eric Mangin’s charity football camp – and him saying the Jets had always been a special franchise to him. Ryan’s father, Buddy, as most of you know, joined Weeb Ewbank’s defensive staff in 1968 and coached in that season’s Super Bowl. [Super Bowl III ”
Sincerity?
(1) The HC NYJ’s position certainly wasn’t up for grabs last summer.
(2) Nobody was twisting Rex’s
arm to appear at Mangini’s charity event.
(3) He doesn’t come across as a BS artist.
So…on the whole I’d take his comment at face value.
Given all the 3-4 defensive players the Jets have assembled, this is a deal that makes sense for both sides.
If so, perhaps the necessary winks and nods were duly recorded by cameras kindly lent by the Patriots’ during the 5-hour interview session on Sunday.
If the Ryan brothers really want to coach with each other, suspect the Jets might want to poke a stick through Mangini’s bicycle spoke by asking Rob Ryan if he would be interested in being the Jets defensive coordinator if certain things happened to work out down the road.
Now, that would be sending a real signal…
If Schotty is still on this team in any position besides QB Coach, that is when I pass my judgement on Tanny/Woody as two monkeys just tryna fit in.
Bassett:
I know I’m on thin ice!!! But, reading your last three posts the only thing I can say is……….Yu ‘da man!!!!!!
