Buzz: Is This Much of a Choice?

by Bassett on January 15th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Adam Schefter is reporting on his blog that the Jets front office might have a bit of a decision to make.

Hiring Ryan does not insure keeping Schottenheimer; in fact, it is just the opposite, multiple league sources say.

If the Jets hire Ryan, the strong belief is that Schottenheimer will look to leave the Jets. Schottenheimer stayed with the Jets two seasons ago when he opted to turn down the Dolphins coaching job. Now, two seasons later, it is unlikely he would do the same if New York picked another candidate over him.

It is a situation that already has drawn attention around the league. Other teams are eying Schottenheimer, waiting to see if the Jets go in a different direction and how they will handle it if they do. It would not be an easy situation to navigate.

But what is known for now is that Ryan and Schottenheimer are not on the same ticket like Obama and Biden. Contrary to public perception, it looks like it could be one or the other.

Opted to turn down the Dolphins job? Was it even offered to him in the first place? Is it me or is there some revisionist historians running rampant here?

Given the choice of a trained monkey to run the Jets offense or Schottenheimer, I could be persuaded to choose the monkey, as his erratic playcalling would be truly random and thus actually unpredictable in comparison to Schottenheimer’s. Game preparation though … let’s just say it’s a close call.

I’m not surprised that Schottenheimer or his faction would cause trouble for a new Head Coach if he’s not named Head Coach of the Jets and it could be that he or someone in his camp is already starting it.

The problem for Schottenheimer is that you have to give your opponent a reason to fear if you are going to bluff …

Does anyone think he’s really a shot at landing a head coaching job? Where will he go? Who is beating down the Jets door to interview him even as a coordinator? Doesn’t the team have him under contract? What other team that is even shopping for coordinators has a better set of pieces currently in place (with or without Favre) than the Jets?

    Can we hire the monkey?

  2. avatar Mars says:

Bassett, no Hat Tip? Just kidding.

The choice is clear, go with Ryan.

  3. avatar Bassett says:

Sorry Mars … I saw your comment after the fact … someone in the league office emailed it to me …

    yeah that’s right … The League Office … ;)

  4. avatar Joe S. says:

I agree NO OFFER WAS MADE.

He pulled himself out of the running for HC. He did not go back in for a second interview.

This is how I remember it.

Where are they getting this story that Brian was offered the Job????

The Media continues to look for way’s to BASH the Jet orginization.

    This story is BULL!!!!!

  5. avatar Dean Barbella says:

I believe Schottenheimer is a good offensive coordinator worthy of a head coaching job, but his hands have been tied by an ’07 season without players and ’08 season with Favre. Thus, he’s received zero interviews outside of the Jets camp.

It’s imperative Tannenbaum & Woody sign Rex Ryan for Public Relations to justify firing the (eminent) coaching combination of HC Eric Mangini / DC Rob Ryan and for On Field Performance to Coach Up our Rebuilt Defense with Rex Ryan and Open Up Schottzy’s playbook and our offense with a young, healthy, capable QB like Kellen Clemens who knows his system.

It’s a perfect storm! This team is built to win now (with a few pieces missing: ILB, CB, SS, FWR) and Schottzy needs us as much as we need him to prove he’s worthy of a head coaching position… he’s got to prove he can win!

Jets should offer him more money and an assistant head coach title. If that doesn’t work, sobeit. Cut our losses and move forward with Rex Ryan as HC and a new OC with a new playbook to learn as aging players like Jenkins, Woody, Richardson, Fanaca get older.

    Tick. Tick. Tick.

    Dean

This article makes no sense. Below is a cut and paste of what I posted when Mars linked to this article in another thread. Bassett, big time!!!

liam, on January 15th, 2009 at 3:53 pm Said:
Mars, thats a good find but the article doesn’t make a lot of sense (nor does it link Schott specifically to KC or anywhere). Its premise is that teams like Schott, would hire him to be their head coach, BUT, and its a huge BUT, no one has contacted him yet to interview for a job, when countless other assistants who are under contract have been interviewing across the NFL??? Makes no sense. Would the author have us beleive that Schott is getting requests for interviews and telling them no, not interested because I interviewed for the Jets job and until that pans out one way or the other I’m not interested in interviewing anywhere else — but if he were turned down for the Jets job then he would make himself available to other teams and they of course would pounce on the opportunity to get the great Schott as their head coach?

    I don’t buy it.

  7. avatar ian says:

ridiculous–nobody will hire schotty him as HC.

maybe as OC/Asst. HC. but not likely. clearly, mangini didn’t want him for that position…

and it’s not really any great choice. coordinator who had run one of NFL’s top defenses over past 5 seasons, judged by almost any criteria, or coordinator who has run a mediocre offense over last 3 yrs?

we can easily go with callahan–at the minimum, he’s just as mediocre as schotty.

  8. avatar Anthony says:

He cannot leave in a lateral move (Schott). He has to either be promoted (HC) or college. Makes no sense at all. The only option would then be the afforementioned KC job, but I can’t see anything linking him and Pioli. Logic would dictate Pioli would pick someone with a Belicheck/Parcells background.

  9. avatar Anthony says:

I still stand by the fact that Scott wasn’t all that bad as an OC. They totaled 405 points with a QB who threw 22 picks!! The skill position talent was marginal, at best. They have nothing at WR (Cotchery is a nice player), they have a good RB, nothing spectacular or explosive. Part of an OC’s job is to get the most out of your talent, but the Jets really have nothing on O.

  10. avatar Michael says:

anthony i see what you saying but they did have talent., the man Leon washington, dustin keller should of went deep more , stuckey, and David Clowney.thats Talent but they didn’t give them the ball often though just a little but i belive dustin keller caught 40 something catches maybe i think not sure on that one

  11. avatar Pete57 says:

I for one would not be upset to see Schott go, especially if it means Callahan would take over the offense. Another good backup plan is Jeff Jagodzinski (sp)

  12. avatar Garrett says:

I read this http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com/article/20090115/SPORTS/901150325 that said Mangini hired Daboll the quarterbacks coach for us last year. Rob ryan of the raiders who we could never get! And some other guy for special teams. I guess Daboll was responsible for Favre getting used to the offense but he was also responsible for this 1-4 ending.
As for coaching we need a coach that can win it outwright. Schott can stay he doesn’t need to call plays. And hopefully the D-coordinator should be smarter than sutton.

  13. avatar swizzle81 says:

This is obviously a no brainer, if the story is true, buh bye Schotty.

  14. avatar Lou says:

you can’t justify him as being good just based on points that were put up.

You gotta watch the games, and see all the stupid calls. Like airing it out against the team with worst run defense in the league. Like actually running the ball when it’s snowing out, and not trying retarded reverses, ect.Or possibly changing things up at halftime when things aren’t working as planned.

I’m all for him leaving. Anything he accomplished was all gimmick type plays. Those only work for so long until people know what your gonna do. Think Miami will be successful with wildcats, and all their trickery next year?

  15. avatar JohnR says:

Can we stop with the “he did a good job” because they scored 405 points?” Weren’t 49 of those points scored by the defense and Leon Washington (on KR’s)?

  16. avatar ANGRY FAN says:

i agree with LOU,im all for him leaving,we will be better off without him, trust and believe, his play calling was unbelievable and terrible,GO RYAN

  17. avatar Kenny G says:

Schott cannot leave the Jets unless it is for a head coaching job…he is under contract and cannot make a lateral move (ie be an OC for another team)

With no team asking the jets for permission to interview Schott for their HC vacancy, why are people saying it will be Ryan or Schott?

The only way he can get out of the Jets is to get a head coaching job or have the Jets relieve him

  18. avatar Harvlis says:

We are beating this topic to death.

If we knew who made the offensive game plan, who scripted the first series, who called the plays during the game, whether Favre was calling the shots or whether he was listening to his coaches, and who made the decision on the offensive talent — then we could make an educated decision on Schottenheimer. If he was fully responsible for the Offensive output — he should have been gone a long time ago.

Those of you who like Schotty obviously missed the Seattle game. You know, the game that would have put us in the playoffs.

  19. avatar jay says:

this is so f***** sorry we have no coach, dont no if we have a qb or not, what in the hell.

  20. avatar DB says:

    @Harvlis:

So none of us have enough information to make an educated decision on Schottenheimer…but the Seattle game is proof that he sucks?

  21. avatar zartan says:

Bottum line is,football is not a nice guy sport.manghini is a nice guy that knows talent. He was so called hard to work with but i couldnt see him firing anyone.Rex looks like he cammands respects from everyone and no cordinators are going to be looking for his job.
the jet though i love them, have been playing some shottie(pun intended) Since parcells era.I just want to see the guys on the feild play hard tuff football win or lose.
like the player,Don’t like Farve but would be willing to take him back if he trains and plays with the other players. We also need to take Freemon or Sanchez to train under him for a year.

  22. avatar JL says:

What happened to Jags? Maybe Schotty is out and Jags is in, if Ryan becomes the HC.

  23. avatar JL says:

BTW, I think Callahan deserves to stay on in some capacity, but not necessarily as OC.

They hired him specifically to help the running game and we had the AFC leading rusher. That’s got to matter for something.

  24. avatar GANGGREN says:

All I have to say is I think SCHOTTY will look great in a ST LOUIS RAMS POLO SHIRT Good luck SCHOTTY was nice doing business with ya ..WAIT can we get a refund on that purchase…The only set back is that clemens, rattif, and ainge need to learn a new offensive system(ANOTHER TEAM SETBACK)…Oh and by the the 405 points we scored this year wasn’t 113 of them done playing ARIZONA and ST LOUIS…that 26% of a total point for the year in 2 games…SO the 405pts isn’t what it seems…

  25. avatar Harvlis says:

DB, the Seattle game was his crowning achievement.

His formations were obvious. He used way too little deception, movement, or play-action. As a result, our opponents often looked like they had our playbook. His lack of deception allowed our opponents to
blanket our wide recievers and led to Favre taking a beating (which led to Favre “throwing it up for fun”).

His play calling was poor. He passed the ball, when the running game should have been used. TJ should have had 1600 yards, if used correctly.

Leon Washington was handed the ball three times or less, in half of our games. In the Seattle game, Leon got it once and ran it in from 47 yards out.

Keller should have been a big part of the offense. He was outstanding in the NE and Tennessee games — he got the ball two time per game, in our last four games. In the first nine games, he hardly saw the ball.

Stuckey caught a TD in the first three games — he dissappeared, after that.

Clowney was thrown one ball – he caught it for a 26yd gain (and I believe it was thrown behind him).

If we sat down, watched game film, and critiqued the Offense — this would become painfully obvious.

  26. avatar frank says:

Can anyone explain how the Jets have explosive players? Coles is not the same, Cotch is ok, Leon is ok, TJ is suspect. The Jets do not have a receiver with a down field threat except Clowney
On the subject of Schotty, he should leave for his benefit. This was never even his gig and he getting blasted by the fans? Why cause his offense wasn’t consistent? How good was the Defense?
And 405 points is nothing? Points is the difference between winning and losing. And Bill Callahan is our offense savior and guru? That I am not buying it
Message to Mr T – choose who u think is the best for the job….don’t worry about the PR. If u think Schotty is our best choice, pull the trigger and do it. That is why u make the decision and they write

  27. avatar ridinmywave says:

Ok…..you minus the 49 points, that’s still good

  28. avatar frank says:

Harvilis, it is obvious to me that Daboll had a lot of offensive input. Mangini limited Schotty. Also, favre still doesn’t know all the plays. How can u call a play ur QB has no clue

U call a play and Favre decides he is gonna throw a ball into double coverage? How do u know that wasn’t a play for Keller. A lot more factors to think about then just bashing the OC

The question to think about…..We’re these plays designed by Schotty or by someone else? Daboll? Favre? I have no clue

  29. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Frank what do you base your theory of Mangini limiting
Shotty on? Threw 40 times in the snow. Rather have a monkey.

  30. avatar frank says:

I am a fan for Rex Ryan though……..get a bruiser, pair him with Leon and have a fierce D with Ratliff the qb.

Make opposing offenses regret they have play the Jets…like the Steelers and Ravens

  31. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Plus any play to Keller Favre would have done. He rarely took his eyes off of him.

  32. avatar keithin says:

all i know is i am tired of the press starting to leak bull!! they already told francesa that there will be no info for a few days. the jets sourse i mean. who knows if any of them will be good?? i do know someone made those bone head calls and had me brake 3 televisions!!

  33. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Frank,

I feel where your coming from, and I myself don’t mind schotti as our OC, but not as our HC. Just like you said, our defense was suspect last year, not primarily in personnel but scheming, do you think bringing in schotti as a HC would help that? Do you know of him having any defensive ties and credibilty around the league in which he can recruit coaches? I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t convince me on that.

But I do think some should lay off a lil bit, let him operate outside the whole favre hoopla.

Oh and I definately don’t consider out 0feense a liability. We have a lot more weapons than the averaged team. Thomas jones is suspect??? He is a consistent 1000 yard back, o-line or no o-line and just led the league in rushing, keller is great as well as leon. I think we have a lot to look forward to next season.

  34. avatar GANGGREEN says:

MAGILLA.MAGILLA Gorilla for sale….WONT YOU buy em takin em home and try em SCHOTTY’s for sale….LMAO

  35. avatar ridinmywave says:

I just heard they brought spags in for a second interview and ofcourse the media is hyping it to be a two headed race again. Despite stating that one probably has just as good a chance as the other, it could just be a PR move, so they don’t seem negligent when it comes to spags, I hope the ravens loose so we can just get this over with!!

  36. avatar Frank says:

TJ is nothing special…..he benefits from the strong O-line. I know he had a good year this season and is a good voice in the locker room but its time to get some more depth at that position since we should be running more often

JustaGreenGuy, 40 passes in the snow as opposed to 40 running plays – wait, who is gonna get these running plays:

    TJ – 30
    Leon -10

2 active running back the whole team. Time to get a bruiser (Jacobs, McClain type runner).

Our weapons are about average but I never see any separation from them. Coles should not be starting. Cotch is a good 2nd option. We need a number 1 guy in here….I know tough to find but give some young guys a shot.

  37. avatar GANGGREEN says:

RIDIN, 1000 yards divided by 16 games=62.5 yds on average if thats not suspect what is.. I know TJ went for 1300+ and 13 touchdowns this year but he wasn’t a back that defenses were scared of either….TJ’s position is definately upgradible in Free Agency or in the draft…How old is he now???Could be time for an upgrade with a 3 down RB with breakaway speed and youth…TJ’s a solid back but not one I would hinge on for the future….

  38. avatar brian311 says:

    this article is complete crap.

    1. i dont remember schotty even interviewing for the dolphins job, let alone “turning it down”. why would any coach turn down a HC job to stay as a coordinator (jason garrett aside, the owner paid him ridiculous money and put him 2nd in command)

    2. if other teams are interested in schotty, why havent they asked for an interview? no one is stopping them. does it give them more leverage if they wait until ryan is hired? maybe, but i dont see the point in waiting if they are interested. doing an interview does not cost them anything.

this whole thing smells like manipulation – the FO is leaking this stuff to pump schotty up.

  39. avatar Bassett says:

brian, no real knowledge from me, but someone is leaking it … but think of someone with a closer, more personal tie to brian schottenheimer’s wallet …

  40. avatar SackDance99 says:

The only reasons to keep Schott is for continuity. The only system that Ratliff and Clemens have ever learned at the pro level is Schott’s. Unless the new HC hires an OC that brings in someone that can run his offense, asking inexperienced guys like Clemens and Ratliff to learn a new system and compete for the starting job might be too much for them to handle.

Besides that, I think that all of Schott’s shifting and complex formations are gimmicks that were okay to use in 2006 when the OL and running game were in shambles. But, this season, with a strong OL, there just wasn’t any reason for a complex offense. Plus, Schott’s in-game adjustments were awful. But, the in-game defensive adjustments were equally awful, so maybe Mangini bears more of the blame than we know. I just wish we heard his interviews because we just don’t know how much of the offensive shortcomings reside with Schott. And, fwiw, I thought the defensive shortcomings were more pronounced than the offensive, which were exacerbated by Favre’s mistakes. The defense doesn’t have as many excuses..the coaching was terrible.

  41. avatar bozzie says:

The Lions have hired Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz as their head coach. That’s another opening which is sealed up…

  42. avatar Chris says:

The funniest thing is that it makes it seem like Schotty is a sought after commodity with the whole NFL just waiting to snatch him up. We couldn’t give him away. I wish we could pay him to work for New England.

  43. avatar ridinmywave says:

I’m not saying TJ isn’t upgradeable and that we don’t need a back for the future to compliment leon, but the man has done nothing but produce since he has been here.

And GANGREEN, don’t start pulling out caclculators on me , I said he has “eclipsed” 1,000 yards consistently, which is a measuring stick for running success (like a .300 av. in baseball), even before he was on the jets, so I think its crazy of FRANK to say the guy is suspect.

The chicago fans were livid and truely missed thomas when he left and that was eveident. You wanna talk about O-lines? We had a joke of an o-line when he first got here…probably the worst in the league, the bears never really had an o line either, so what’s your guys point? (He man still went out and produced. We do have to look forward (hopefully wells or moreno) but the guy has been productive. And with that O line this past year(that some of you said was suspect), thomas just went on to lead the AFC in rushing and break a couple jet scoring records in the midsts of it. I mean I kno NY is tough, but what the hell do you have to do get some respect, win the nobel?

  44. avatar ridinmywave says:

Btw, BASSET, did you hear anything regarding spags second interview? They said that he has just as good a chance as rex ryan now. Say it aint so!!!!!

  45. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

We already have a monkey named Schott. I only hope that Schott goes elsewhere after the JETS hire REX.

  46. avatar jas says:

    Bassett-
I’m proud of you. You’re coming around on how awful the coaching was the last 3 years.
By the way, there are some pissed off monkeys. They think they are way better and don’t appreciate being compared to Shotty.

  47. avatar dcjetsfan says:

Mort was saying if the Rams dont hire Jarrett by end of day Friday, they will be going after Ryan and he then said he speculated Ryan prefers the Rams HC Job over the Jets… Keep in mind it came from Mort but lets hope the Rams and Jarrett is doing a presser tomorrow.

  48. avatar Harvlis says:

You guys who are bashng Thomas Jones – I want to know where you buy your drugs. He leads the AFC in rushing, has 13 TDs, and he needs to be replaced? I do agree, we need depth at the position.

GangGreen, “TJ wasn’t a back that other teams were scared of?” Who cares if they are scared — they have to stop him.

    Frank, Leon is just okay?

You guys are underrating our Offensive talent, because the coaches did not use them properly.

I’ll give you two examples, where formations and play-calling can make all the difference:

In one situation, we are in an empty backfield set, Favre drops back, looks around and can’t find a receiver. Safeties are playing back, as there is no way we can run the ball. The defense knew the pass was coming so, they rushed five or six players. Favre feels the rush and throws a pass directly to a defender.

In another situation, we have Richardson and TJ in the backfield, Favre drops back, play-actions to TJ who circles out of the backfield, Richardson picks up the blitzing LB, Safety plays up, as he bites on the play-action. Favre looks up, finds single coverage on a slant to Cotchery, and we gain fifteen yards.

Schottenheimer put us in the first situation, way too often. That is how coaching can cause a receiver to look like he can’t get separation. That is how coaching can cause a QB to throw interceptions. You have to look beyond statistics.

  53. avatar Frank says:

Empty backfield sets….I believe this was a staple for BRETT FAVRE more than Schotty…………I wonder who added that wrinkle into the offense.

Leon is like the basketball player that comes off the bench for energy and then loses his flavor after awhile if used too much. He is a great talent but he can’t be used as more than a change of pace back.

Regarding TJ, his only 2 stellar years were when he had a dominate offensive line with CHI and NY. About 4 years ago, TJ was the 3rd running back and looking for a team to play for (ARI, TB). He was a failed college player who became tough in the NFL. I think he is a good player but nothing to brag about.
