B-Schotty’s agent, Jimmy Sexton (he’s also the agent of guys like Spurrier and Parcells if that gives you a sense of what he’s about) is using his best puppeteer skills through ESPN’s Chris Mortensen this morning to note that newly named Head Coach of the Lions Jim Schwartz might be interested in Schottenheimer for his staff. Also of interest to Schwartz is Broncos’ QB Coach Jeremy Bates.
Schwartz hasn’t said anything publicly on the matter, but Schottenheimer’s side is trying to make good on threats that there are in fact other teams interested in him.
Wow … this is troubling … oh wait … let me use my brain for three seconds.
Brian Schottenheimer’s agent is? Jimmy Sexton.
Jim Schwartz’s agent is? Jimmy Sexton.
Let’s play connect the dots!!!

First of all B-Schott can take a hike for all I care. He has been bad at best since the 2006 run we had.
Secondly he is under contract and cannot leave unless he gets a promotion from another team…..So the spin job by Sexton is weak
3rd…Who gives a crap. While he has shown signs of being able to script 10-15 plays to start a game…he has shown zero talent for being a Big-time HC or better yet even a Big-time OC.
It’s always funny to see people try to create leverage when the clearly dont have any!!
-
As far as I’m concerned, if he wants to go to Detroit….lotsa luck.
-
Schott is under contract, if your interested , it will cost you a fourth round pick
-
Hey Detroit…”thank you” in advance for the draft pick you can take this piece of crap from us, and you too will find out that Shotty is as useless as boobs on a bull !!
Wishing you a better 2009 season and hopefully getting your first win in two years!!
— Suckers !! –
-
Kewpie to JetOrange.
There is no reason to make a decision at this point unless the Lions care to test our ability to find value in the fourth round yet again.
They might too. They have at least 5 picks in the first three rounds. At least demanding value at this point for giving up our flexibility puts to the test all assumptions regarding the league’s opinion of Shott.
Good one orange.

All you Schottenheimer/Mangini slash and burn artists must consider one question:
Why would the Browns limit themselves soooo greatly in their GM search by hiring Mangini in a NY MINUTE ( as most said ” he will never work in the NFL again “) if he sucked so much as most of you say he did?
-
I hope this is the right thread to post what I think is an important post-
1-If we hire Ryan and it works out, this past 3 years will evaporate from our minds (like Herm did)
2- If we hire Shotty and it works out-same. And, I will post an apology because I keep posting how wrong that is.
3-If we hire Shotty and it stays as awful it will set this franchise back far more than a year or two/
4-Most importantly, the fan base will truly be harmed and demoralized for a long time. Most people have forgotten how bad it got during and after Kotite.
After the second game, I posted that team and season this had a Kotite feeling about it (look it up). We are still there, unless we push this mess away completely.
-
Sorry about the last paragraph typo. Hope you all get it.
-
To answer hank/naples, maybe the Cleveland owner is an idiot? 3 GM’s have already turned them down since Mangini was hired, guess they aren’t lining up to work with old sourpuss.
-
Never said i hated Mangini (as a matter of fact, I wished he was able to stay on), I just am not a fan of Schott.
-
hank,
The Browns are not a very well-run organization these days. They totally screwed up the Anderson/Quinn thing, the relationship with K. Winslow is a disaster, and it seems like they were pretty rash in hiring Mangini, as no one else seemed to have shown any interest.I think namath4ever hit the nail on the head.
-
No doubt next year with DRex will improve the Jets two fold:
1) He will take over our defense, NOT Sutton. And,
2) Farve will not be here.
Note: Notice the above statement does not involve our OC in any way.
-
mole57 & namath4ever:
Don’t be so quick to pass judgement, Lerner is having his second interview early next week, regardless of outcome, with guess who? A very respected , successful GM, Kokinos of the Ravens.
-
Browns are waiting to hire George Kikonis of the Ravens to be there new GM, they cannot hire him because the Ravens are still in the playoffs, just like the Jets are waiting for Ryan.
-
Right and so they will be hiring their 2nd former Bellicheat assistant and their 2nd former Ravens front office person, who i believe worked under the last guy they fired (Savage). Yes, I’d say they are a rock solid franchise.
-
BTW, He is NOT the Ravens GM, that would be Ozzie Newsome.
-
namath4ever:
I like your name, but some of your posts i don’t know about. Those Bellichick assistants you mentioned have 5 super bowl ring between them. They bring some legacy to the Browns. Not bad, eh?
-
Didn’t Mangini try to bring Kokinis to the Jets a few years ago? Looks like the Browns hired the coach to pick the GM, rather than the other way around.
-
I would trade Schott to Detroit in exchange for Calvin Johnson.
-
Hank
Yet none have been successful head coaches……..2 already have been fired and one (Weis) will be next year if ND doesn’t win big. 2 of the 3 have losing records and Weis is above .500 only because colleges can pick their own foes. Yes, its sure a tree I’d want to pick from again.
-
mole
Bingo! How can that work? If the teams tanks again under EM how can the GM be held accountable?
-
mole57:
I think you hit the nail on the head !!! Lerner brought in Kokinis because of Mangini. This should show all the Mangini bashers how much value this guy carries in football.
Kokinis, proof is in the puding, is a highly respected personnel guy. The one person that should tell us personal and up close info about him is DRex.
If you put Kokinis with R.Ryan and the team of assistants Mangini wants, it will become very interesting for Mangini bashers/farve worshipers. -
Hank,
It smacks of historical desperation. Belichick/Mangin/Kokinis, et al were part of the Browns organization just before Modell moved them to Baltimore. Since then, the Ravens have won a Super Bowl and are contenders, and Belichick has won 3 Super Bowls. They have no ties to the current Browns franchise (whose first brilliant move was to pick Tim Couch first overall in the draft). When they hired Romeo, it was as if they were trying to right the wrong that was done to them Modell. (You can argue that the Jets hired Mangini to right the wrong done to them by Belichick.)
It just doesn’t seem like a move for the sake of bettering a football team,a s much as trying to get even. When they went after Cowher first, a lot of that was because he was the successful coach of a hated rival. I think Cleveland’s ownership have a lot of “issues” to work out. I don’t believe that they have this great foresight that no one else has in Mangini’s greatness. -
I wish I knew the truth…was it Mangini interfering with Schott and forcing him to be too conservative or was it just that Schott sucked and Mangini took the hit for it?
If you look at the first year with Schott as OC, he was very creative, he kept the opposing defenses guessing with all the motions and shifts, and he became a hot HC prospect.
This year it was completely different, we were unimaginative, and predictible. How much did Favre have to do with that? I just hope why don’t let a good coach slip away that should have been retained.
-
Please don’t get me excited and let me down guys! Detroit please please please take Schotty, we could never thank you enough.
the only question i have is how do you get worse than 0-16? we are sure to find out after you hire Schotty. -
ramble914:
If you look at your post you will see that the common denominator, the straw that stirred the drink so to speak, the one thing that was the catylist for our collapse the last five games was NOT Chott/ Mangini, it was, and you know what i’m going to say……FARVE.
I’m praying that Shott decides to stay and prove to all BASHERS the real reason and we can move on. And…
Last year was not a good indicator of his abilities because of all our personnel problems.
-
namath4ever:
I don’t what you are referring to but Mangini has hired three former “assistants” from NE, NONE have been fired and none have been head coaches. They have eight, not five and not counting Mangini, superbowl rings with them. One, Seely, he was able to pull away from Bellichick after 10 years of service to the team.
-
Listen, if Schott wants to go, let him leave!
He has proven absolutely nothing since his first season. Any moron with a brain could’ve scored 26 points a game this season with who we had on offense.
Besides, Bill Callahan is more responsible for the success of the running game than Schotty.
If Schott wants to go, than he can let the door hit him in the a$$ on the way out. I sure as heck won’t lose any sleep over him.
-
Not to mention he fails to utilize Leon Washington, who is far superior to Reggie Bush.
-
BTW,
Don’t trust Tanny & Woody. They might LOVE Schott and think he is great, but they have no mind for football (only money.) Our FO and Woody also loved Herm Edwards and Eric Mangini.
See where that got us? Schott is a joke.
-
Hank
I’m talking about the former Bellicheat assistants that have been recent head coaches, 0 of them have been successful HC even in college (Weis). They can have all the rings they want as assistant coaches , until one gets one as a HC it means nothing. Mangoofus can hire all of them that he wants in Cleveland, we all know that the Pats win because of the HC and nobody else. Well, at least most of us. Hurts to say that but its the hard truth.
-
If detroit wants schott and will give us a pick or a player, I would do it in a heartbeat.
-
I agree that this is just an agent trying to put pressure on the Jets.
-
I think Schott could go to detriot without compensation if they include the assistant ead coach in the tittle… though I think Bent would be the one to clarify that.
-
Hank, come one.
Randy Lerner is a guy who was an investment analyst until a few years ago was given a football team (at least Tannenbaum studied sports law and has been in pro football for 13 yrs now). So you are saying that because he scooped up Eric Mangini in a move reminiscent of Leon Hess scooping up Rich Kotite (who had more success with Philly than Eric did here) means that every Jet fan and NY media — and all the Cleveland fans and media (you should really read some of the stuff about fans giving back their season tickets) that bashed the move — are wrong about him sucking as much as they have written?
Look — I’m not saying he sucks, but just because this non-football mind, who until now has kept a low profile like Hess did, decided to be a lunatic and hire a guy immediately does not make me think maybe the rest of the NFL was mistaken. If any team were to hire a coach without interviewing a few others first I would think they were rash — no matter who it was.
The fact is, the Browns haven’t hired an experienced HC in 37 years. That’s 12 straight rookie coaches – including Forrest Gregg, Marty Schottenheimer and Bill Belichick in their first jobs before going on to better things. They are a not a stable franchise and the similarities between this and Kotite’s hiring in 1995 are indisputable.
-
Mangini is better than Kotite. It is that simple. Kotite ruined a decent Eagles team and got exposed for what he was with us. This Jet team is better than the one Herm left us. He deserves some credit for that.
-
The Mangini thing is, in a way, similar to the Edwards going to the Chiefs thing. The Jets were tired of him anyway, the Chiefs were the only team ready to jump in, and the Jets were happy to get rid of him.
The Browns were more than happy to take Mangini, that doesn’t make him a great coaching prospect magically.
-
I’d trade him for a 4th round draft pick in a New York minute. Remeber who we got for the 4th round pick we got for Herm? The very guy Schottenheimer forgot to use most of the season, that’s right LEON WASHINGTON!
-
Hank/naples,
I know you’ve posted about Brett numerous times. Do you really not know that his last name is spelled Favre, not Farve? Or, are you just messing with everyone?I think that if Detroit is willing to give up a pick, we should take it in a heartbeat. That way, if Rex is the new HC, he can pick the OC he wants. I would like to see Callahan in that role personally.
-
I’m not surprised that Mangini really impress a corporate guy like Lerner with all his pie-charts and paretos and diaries of every play ever run during practices. Corporate guys eat that stuff up! But at the end of the day, after the Xs and Os are done, you NEED your head coach to be A LEADER OF MEN ! It is the difference that all playoff teams have. BTW – Herm has it, as is evident by his teams not quitting on him, but Herm lacks X’s and O’s and game management skills. Which is odd, because i would think that stuff could be learned over …what? 7 years!….but apparently not.
-
Let Schott go if he wants. I do not even need compensation. Callahan could provide more experience as well as continuity for the offense.
Hank, it is really blindness that causes you to blame the season on Favre. I’ve asked you tthis question before, and you didn’t answer, so I’ll ask it again:
In 2007 Chad couldn’t throw the ball well because of his ankle injury and you gave him a break because of it. Why doesn’t Favre get the same consideration? Before Favre was injured he had us at 8-3, first place and he was playing well. It is the coaching staffs fault for either not sitting him down, or playcalling around his injury. With a bad arm, Schott called 40 passes in the snow at Seattle. Ridiculous., We could’ve run on every down and we would’ve won the game. The final responsibility of the season falls at the feet of the HC. -
namath4ever:
These three asst’s. are not becoming HC’s. so it doesn’t do any good, and it’s not fair to use that comparison.
What I will compare is both owners in that football is not their exprtise. One dictates control, the other doesn’t. Which do you think will be better?
However, a cardinal rule in management is that to be a competent manager you must sorround yourself with competent people. I believe Mangini was not given this power by Tannenbaum and he now has it with the Browns. You are only as stron as your support group. !!!!! So far Mangini has a very strong and competent support group, without a doubt.
Even with DRex I will be very nervous playing the Browns—whenever!!! -
Bent, Are you sure about that? I’m a little lost as to what qualifies as a lateral move/promotion and whether Asst Head Coach counts. Right now Callahan is Asst Head Coach/O-Line Coach. Does that mean he couldn’t interview somewhere as an OC? Also, because Callahan is the Asst HC, does that put him above or below Schott in the Jets hierarchy? If anyone knows the answers, please let me know.
-
Pete57:
In every single post I have given various facts as to why Farve was the catylist for our collapse. From the very beggining I have been agaist the move and I have always stated why. I’m sorry if you have: A) failed to read them B) not understood them or C) read them with Farve colored glasses on. Theacid test will be next year and everyone will see that I’ve been right all along.
-
here’s the real takeaway from all of this: jeremy bates is the guy detroit wants and he’s the guy we should want too. (i posted about it a few days ago.)
i would be thrilled to get rid of schott and keep callahan in charge of o-line and run game and as asst. HC and let bates be qb coach, wr coach and passing game coordinator.
-
bunpsetepike:
Interesting name you have.
Regarding Farve (Far-ve)Beign fro NY, I pronouce it right and spell it right. However he is from MS. and pronounces it right but spells it wrong.
I hope I made that clear, wasn’t it? -
the last time we gave a contracted loser up to another team, the draft pick resulted in kerry rhodes, so….
-
I think the pick turned into Leon not Rhodes
-
Seattle, snow, overall awful weather conditions, first drive, running game never gains less than 4 yards each carry. Jets utilize the fullback for the first time. The defense is on its heels. 4th and 1/2 yard at the 2 yard line. Here’s what could potentially happen: (i) first down made, 4 chances to get TD, (ii) TD is made, (iii) 4th down play fails, Seattle gets ball 1st and 10 in terrible weather conditions at the 2 yard line, (iv) FG attempt, which could be missed, (v) turnover. Now, I don’t know what the percentages are for any of these outcomes, but I’m wondering whether running and attempting to get the 1st down was SAFER than attempting a FG in the snow. Our cowardly, play-not-to-lose HC chose a FG. In a must-win game, against an inferior opponent, leadership is going for the win, not hoping not to lose. If anyone thinks that was a good coaching move or Favre had anything to do with that call, then that person is seriously deluded. IMO, a TD there would’ve let the whole team exhale and the Jets would’ve routed the Seahawks. Frack Mangini! Let him coach not to lose in Cleveland. And, I wish Cleveland was on the Jets’ schedule. With Mangini gone (who lost to the Browns in ’06 and ’07), maybe we’d have a chance to beat them.
-
Hank
I guess you either didn’t understand or didn’t care to understand my original point so i may have to go a little slower. The fact the Browns scooped up EM doesn’t make them any geniuses. Fact is, the last 3 Bellicheat assistants to become HC (Crennel, Weis, and EM) all have not had success as HC. So the fact they went right back to the Bellicheat tree doesn’t make them any more than gluttons for the punishment that they got with the last HC they hired off that tree. I never mentioned a thing about the guys EM has surrounded himself with because if his Jet tenure says anything he won’t let them do anything.
-
Blame Mangini, but Sutton /Schotty suck and Favre is a washed up loser. Seattle was a badly coached game, but the rest of the last 5 involved the worst execution I have seen. Trent Dilfer could have won them. Make Mangini the scapegoat, but he made this team better.
-
Sack, once again you are dead-on !! One day I will disagree with you , I promise. Although I do recall you were a Clemons fan over Chad (pre-Aug 6th, 2008), and i wasn’t…
Anyway, I’m intrigued to see “what might’ve been” for the Jets now that Eric has the guys he really wanted for the Jets working as Coordinators in Cleveland.
If Rex Ryan is the HC, who is our DC?
-
Guess it couldn’t be a bad gameplan and poor in game coaching with 0 adjustments. Eric, shouldn’t you be looking at film in cleveland and not on Jets blog? BTW, if Sutton sucked so bad why didn’t Eric the great fire him after last season when we all wanted him to? Hmmmmmmmmm
-
Namath4ever – One could make a strong argument about former Baltimore DCs and position coaches not amounting to much as head coaches either. (see nolan, lewis, donny henderson, etc.)
…be that as it may…I still like Rex Ryan for this team….
-
Because the guy he hired this week didn’t come available.
-
He thought he could fire him this year and keep continuity with the defense. Woody did promise that this year would effect his job status.
-
Sorry I meant wouldn’t.
-
Btw Abram Elam made more impact plays that Kerry Rhode. I don’t think that is just the HCs fault.
-
Bubby that is true enough but what if we hired one and went right back to the well and di it again? Thats my point and trust me, I live in Ohio and know many Browns fans and they totally hate the move and can’t figure out they would not only hire a 2nd straight Bellicheat ast coach and then to top it off also hire an 2nd straight Ravens FO person.
-
namath4ever, Interesting point. Taking it a step further, they just hired the guy that replaced Romeo at NE and are about to hire the guy that replaced (sort of) Savage at Balt.
-
See I like Cleveland and Mangini will be better than Crennel. Record speaks for itself. This year was a good experience for Mangini and he helped resurrect these Jets, including a defensive alignment change. The Browns already have the pieces of the 3-4 in place. Mangini isn’t a NE ast he is the former NYJ HC. That is very different.
-
SD99–
In complete agreement. Just one small item perhaps no one noticed. On the SNY post-game, Ray Lucas and Greg Buttle thought that going for the FG was a great call. “You have to get any points in those bad conditions,” or some such BS. Mangini, whom I thought would be the anti-Herm, for some reason slipped into Hermism. -
Rich- I think it was watching an 8-3 team crumble like a house of cards.
-
namath4ever;
Read my post @2:02 pm. If you want to just bash mangini that’s you prerogative, but I will i will have no part in that argument.
-
namath4ever – you can tell your Browns friends that they also have “good karma” working for them too…
As in:
Belicheat failed his first HC go around mostly because he upset media and fans by sitting the favorite son (Kosar) for a future HOF (Vinny). (insert Chad and Favre for Eric)
Belicheat shipped Bledsoe off so he could play a QB named Brady. (insert Anderson and Quinn for Eric) .
Belicheat and eric were both ‘HCs of the NYJ’.
Belicheat and Eric are both replacing a former Jets DC turned HC (Crenell and Carroll).
Willie McGuiness played for both and will be the “coach on the field”.
okay…nevermind…you’re right…Browns have no clue!
:-) -
Conspiracy theory number 53….Rex Ryan wants his own offensive coordinator, probably Hugh Jackson. Although, the original Schott interview was a mere formality, Tanny is now hyping Schott trying to create a market, if he pryes a fourth round pick out of those idiot Lions, it’s like stealing.
-
Please get rid of this piece of S&^% !!
He sucks more than his father.
-
Hey bubby, Bellicheat took a step back and went back to being a DC so he could evaluate himself as to be ready the next time, EM isn’t doing that, he’ll still be the same person giving that “i know more than everyone” look and chewing his gum. But you’re right, he’ll be the new czar of coaches………
-
Not a bad conspiracy theory JetOrange. Now the Detroit Free Press is reporting also that the Lions are eyeing Schotty, what great news if they are able to get a draft pick for the over hyped OC.
-
Namath4ever – strange as it sounds, I think Eric had a better chance at becoming a head coach again than being a DC again….
-
Would you have said no? Do you think Bellicheck would have if it had been offered?
-
Actually Bubby I agree with that, if Lerner didn’t have a hard on for him I don’t think he would have had a DC job next year.
-
Greenguy, too bad Belly didn’t have a Randy Lerner owning a team when he left the Browns.
-
Bubby – I’ve agreed with you lots of times on this blog, but if you seriously believe that:
* Chad was a favorite son at the time of the Favre trade, and
* Vinny is a future HOF (2 great seasons out of 20 does not a HOF make),
you are tripping.
-
Hank, why do you keep dodging my question? I HAVE read all your posts regarding Favre, but I’ve asked you a couple of times now why Favre doesn’t get some consideration for his injury, but Chad does. And you have not addressed it in any of your posts. The obvious reason is that you simply like Pennington and you don’t like Favre. Very similar to how the vast majority of the media is left wing, and they will pounce on a Republican that messes up, but if a Democrat did the same thing, we wouild never hear about it. You have an anti-Favre agenda, and you do not want to let “facts” and “truthful information” interfere with that. And for the record I thought Favre, overall, underperformed this year and I’m not sure I want him back.
-
BubbyBrister/Shovelpass,
When Chad lost the second game to the Bills in ’07, I was done with him. But, after watching Clemens and, in particular, his stink bomb game against Cleveland…that was it. I’d seen enough. While I was fed up with Chad, it was obvious that his fall off was due to injury. As for KC, I just don’t think he has what it takes to be an NFL QB. So, during the entire 2008 pre-season, I was the anti-KC, regularly being flamed for trashing him. And, I was a huge Matty Ice supporter. I also said over and over that there was no comparison in QB-ability between KC and Matty Ice. I also predicted that there would be no QB competition because a healthy Chad would easily beat out KC. So, I haven’t been on the KC bandwagon since that Cleveland loss. I honestly think he had a decent enough shot to show whether he has NFL talent and failed.
Now, I’m a Ratliff guy. But, I think the Jets should cover themselves with Leftwich, who is frankliy nothing like Chad, except they’re both smart and from Marshall. Leftwich has a great arm, but he has bad mobility and a deliberate (not slow) release. He’s not a “dinker and dunker” and I wonder how he is on his short and intermediate throws. But, no doubt he has a cannon.
-
Swizzle,
thanks
To further add to the conspiracy theory , how about the leak to Scheffler , that Mangini tied Schotts hands…still in running for HC… If Rex doesn’t bring his own Coordinator, which guy do you think he would be more
comfortable with, Callahan or Schott. Rex’s philosohy is probably closer to Callahan. -
Again, why are bashing Schott? His oFfense did not have creativity because his QB was learning on the fly.
It is not peculiar to anyone that the creativity didn’t exist this yearKeep Schotty…..Bill Callahan is a failure from Oakland and from college. Rex or anyone else is gonna pick their own guy
-
Regarding the SEA game…..I didn’t mind the FG. The Defense is the reason why we lost that game
How can Seneca Wallace and Mo Morris look like Pro Bowlers?Reason for the collapse – Defense…..which is why Mangini is coaching Cleveland and not us
-
Pete57;
Okay, okay I’ll repeat a couple of reasons. (By the way, it appears you are a republican. I like that !!!)
FARVE WAS NEVER A GOOD FIT !!!!
Farve Never spent any time one on one with Rodgers therefore I felt it would be a two year loss for our QB rooks.
Farve demands his own cadence, therefore I felt it would bevery bad for team chemistry.
Farve did not FIT Manginis mold as described by Mangini himself at his 1st. press conf. ie. team core values of work, selflessness, participation etc, etc.
Farve was always a gunslinger, improvaso, fight first, think later, never needs to study a playbook.
Farve WAS (Past tense) bigger than the team, specially the manager. Footnote..I realy don’t know why.
Do you want me to list a couple more?Like I said, I have stated all these reasons before, however, I know MOST of you NEVER bothered to read them, always as usual bash first. !!!
-
Pete57;
PS. I have never referred to Chads or Farves injuries, Period.!!!
-
I have not checked it out but….
CP WAS THE BEST QB THE JETS HAD SINCE NAMATH. !!!
-
Correction:……THE BEST QB ‘FOR’ THE JETS SINCE NAMATH.
hank
-
Ok, Hank. I’ll let the injury stuff go. On another note, I really want to see one of the QB’s we have be given a chance, wether it’s Ratliff or Clemens. But I think it would be wise to bring in a Leftwich type, as a backup plan.

This reminds me of a scene from Kentucky Fried Movie.
