According to Newsday’s source, the Jets have set their direction and they are comfortable with it and probably won’t be looking at Jon Gruden for a number of reasons:
The organization has interviewed eight candidates and, as of Friday night, no more interviews had been scheduled. Only one of those candidates, Bill Callahan, has been an NFL head coach.
“They made it pretty clear from the start they were going the coordinator route,” a league source familiar with the Jets’ search said Friday night.
The source said pursuing Gruden – just 45-53 with the Bucs after going 12-4 in 2002 and winning the Super Bowl in his first season – would represent a “surprising change of course” for the Jets. The source added, however, “You learn to never say never in this business.”
If they aren’t even interested, then this just confirms to me that the Jets likely have their man (Rex Ryan) and they are just waiting out the string of playoff games to name him as their new head coach.

Gruden would be terrible because we don’t know who our QB is yet. His crazy offense would just make our team worse.
-
Rex Ryan is the guy for the Jets! HIRE REX RYAN IMMEDIATLY! Make him an offer he can’t refuse!
Show Rex that he is #1… Don’t consider Gruden at all! Right after the Raven’s game Sunday… CALL REX RYAN and Offer him the Jet job and have Rex and his family to come up to NJ to see the complex and then get him to sign a contract!!!!! Don’t let him take another interview!!!
Did you hear what Gruden’s players were saying about him? Not good!
-
I agree Rex is our man.
-
Rex is our man, but if we were to have an offensive coach he would be my top pick. Team him with Callahan and make good ol Raiders2. He would have made KC great. Rex Ryan will be ours soon.
-
I’m a Rex Ryan fan, so I’m indifferent about pursuing Gruden, but I think he’s a good coach. Like everyone here, I’m hoping for a Steelers victory and a press conference next week announcing Rex as the new HC. Then, we can move to the next controversy: Favre’s retirement decision, which we won’t know about for a while. And, the draft debates will be fun because it will be real hard to predict who will be around at 17.
-
how in the hell can schott be offended? Rewarding mediocrity is common everywhere, for a change lets not go that route. Im sold on ryan and lets see what happens.
-
I am all for Rex Ryan! Bring him in. Lets go steelers, so we have ryan as our coach in the middle of the week!
Lets than pray for Favre to retire! Then Hope for Ratliff to beat out Clemens, or our receiver to start catching Clemens balls.
On the draft subject: since yesterdays post on the corner issue, it got me starting my drafting player research. Hank/napples- is all about giving Lowery a second chance at starting opposite Revis, I am undecided about the issue. Lowery should be better, and hopefully the aggressiveness of putting pressure on the QB from Rex Ryan will help out on coverage.
I think the no Brainer for us in the draft is if ILB James Laurinaitis falls to us! He has good speed, great in coverage, smart player- he will be a good answer for replacing barton- covering TE’s and RB’s. I dont know how good any of our backup LB are in coverage(Murrell,Spencer, Trusnik)
Another Player I am really interested in is:
Tyson Jackson- DE who has been constantly double teamed since his JR season because he was so dominant in his first 2 years at LSU- Numbers are down due to the double teams, but still the best 3-4 DE in the draft- Ellis isnt getting any younger, and coleman does nothing except stop the run, unsure of mike devitto being the starter for the future! I have seen Jackson towards the end of most mock drafts in the first round, so maybe we can even trade down- save money and acquire extra midround pick.If we go CB route-Would love malcolm jenkins, but he wont be there, 50% chance of vontae davis being there- then u have the other top 2-3 CB’s: DJ Moore, Alphonso Smith, Darius Butler
Question: If not sold on Lowery being a corner- should we convert him to free safety and have Rhodes as strong safety? Should we look now to replace Abram Elam or give him this season to prove himself? Had some big plays in the half season he played, but also got burnt a few times!
The top safety in the draft is a strong safety, be perfect for us- William Moore- great cover skills makes him the best safety available! Then offensively: what if QB’s stafford or sanchez are still available- do we take a chance on one of them?
Also- i know all of us would love to draft a good WR- maybe Maclin, trade back and see who is available- harvin is speedy, heyward-bey has good size!
I think if James Laurinaitis isnt there, and we dont think its good value drafting Tyson Jackson or any of CB’s that are left after M. Jenkins and V. Davis are picked, we should try to trade down and take who ever falls to us out of the list of players i stated above! But if James Laurinaitis, M. Jenkins, V. Davis are all gone and we cant trade down- I would prefer to pick Tyson Jackson over a CB!
-
Rex is the man, defense wins super bowls.
-
A minor note:
“The Browns did not announce other assistants, although it is believed Bryan Cox, who was with Mangini on the Jets, could pop up as defensive line coach. Late in Cox’s 12-year playing career, he was on Jets and Patriots teams with Mangini. ”
It would be interesting to see which of the Jets position coaches are (or not) still under contract.
-
I think this decision has more to do with Mike wanting to maintain his power, which is good even though his motives our out of place, now we won’t get distracted and let Ryan fall out of our grasp

besides the fact of gruden being an a-hole of a coach and none of his players liking or respecting him, what has he done since that inherited sb win?? how about not one playoff win…NUTHIN! as the stars on the team faded or left, so did he, along with any respect. the jets dont need a damn quarterback coach, if that was the case they would have said screw everything else and hired shanahan!…
people get too wrapped up in HC experience in the league as if it garauntees succes?….how about NO, it garauntees the TOTAL OPPOSITE!! get a clue, you tell me how many or better yet ONE coach in recent time or who has took 2 teams to a superbowl win over a margin of years???
what worked then with “that” team…wont necessarily work now with “this” team. alot of coaches get complacent and hinge any type of respectability on what success they had 10 years ago with a particular team.
so tanni, please HIRE REX RYAN ASAP, before some other “veteran” coach with 60 wins and 60 losses gets fired and some these clueless fans start getting antsy
this is a league of adjustments and new champions, not even bill parcells was able to win a sb with two teams. theres gonna be someone new winning the SB throughout history, how about of the 4 teams still playing..3 have rookie coaches!! stop getting wrapped up in this popularity contest crap, whomever wants gruden to come to ny is just clueless and dumb.

CAJet fan said it best…..DEFENSE WINSCHAMPIONSHIPS, something gruden could care less about
-
I think the Rams are trying to Steal Rex Ryan away from the Jets. They were to name a caoch today and have not done so! Stories are floating around the net that Rex is their # 1 choice for HC.
Woody and Mike better NOT let this happen! I will be one pissed off Jet Fan and Season ticket holder if this happens!
One minute after that Raven / Steeler Game Woody and Mike better made Rex Ryan an offer he can’t refuse and get him to New Jersey!
I WILL NOT Accept any other coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
gruden is not an option and the jets aren’t even going to contact him……they want rex ryan as the coach and they want him to know that he’s their choice….they didnt even want the spagnuolo interview to get out because they dont want ryan to consider any other team thinking the jets might not be interested in him……
i’m pretty sure schotty will stay on despite the talks of him wanting out…..if he thinks going to detroit to become a coordinator is a good career move he’s more wacked out then most jets fans think…..if he stays on as coordinator and the jets make the playoffs next year or have decent success on offense he’ll have some head coaching interviews next year again….if he goes to detroit and they stink it up like last year then he has no shot at a head coaching job…
-
the rams may have choosen spagnuolo…..check out this link from stltoday.com
As first reported by columnist Bernie Miklasz in his “Bernie’s Press Box” forum on STLtoday.com, the St. Louis Rams have selected Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to be their head coach.
-
finally the spagnuolo talks can stop…….he’s begining negotiations for the job this afternoon and is expected to be named the head coach later today……rex is ours
-
Nice work dade county….rex is ours!!!
-
ha…..i broke the news before shcefter…..i just saw it pop up on nfl network…..spagnuolo 4 year contract with the rams 11.5 million dollars
-
spags to rams
-
Spags hired in St.Louis… now the only option left is RYAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
While I thought Rex Ryan was perhaps the best choice for Jets coach before Gruden was fired, all this hatred for Gruden and claims that Ryan is a better choice than Gruden is ABSURD!
We have a track record for Gruden…namely a 40-28 with a terrible Oakland Raiders franchise and a 60-57 record as well as being the winningest coach in T.B. history.
We have absolutely nothing to judge Rex Ryan on as a head coach. Baltimore had a great defense before he became defensive coordinator. How do we not know he is simply been along for the ride? After all his predecessors Marvin Lewis and Mike Nolan didn’t exactly fair too well as head coaches.
And this nonsense about some of his players not liking Gruden is simply that….nonsense. There has been quite a few players who haven’t liked a lot of the best coaches…Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Pat Riley, etc, etc. but do you want a Jets coach who will win a popularity contest among players or a coach who will win games?
-
SPAGS to the RAMS!! YES!!!!!
RYAN will be a JET!!!
-
anyone else notice the demise of the bill walsh west coast offense? holmgren is gone, shanahan fired, and now gruden fired. the league goes in phases and it seems that the bill walsh west coast offense (as opposed to the don coryell w.coast run by norv, cam cameron, and schotty) is out.
p.s. please don’t draft laurinitis–those big 10 LB’s are always overrated. i think ray malauga is way better, if he’s still on the board.
-
i like gruden as a coach because he has experience. Ryan has none and BAL had a great defense for years. Billick an offensive coach had a great D in Baltimore as well and won the SB with a terrible offense because of this defense. nothing new with Ryan. Gruden at least has wona SB and we can point to a record. Ryan is just too much of a wild card.
-
uncle bobby,
wining a sb in the past means nothing. name ONE head coahc that has won it with two different teams……..the odds are against him. and how about of the remaining 4 teams, 3 are rookie coaches and reid has never won it. there are new SB winners as coaches ALL the time, what you did 10 years ago is irrelivant.
-
ryan is a wild card as is gruden a definate failure
-
YES… YES… YES… No other Team left without a HC!
Rex will be ours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Woody and Mike HIRE REX RYAN!!!!!!
Offer him 4 Years at $14 Million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t be CHEAP with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
The ST LOIUS RAMS signed SPAGS to a 4 year 11.4 MILLION DOLLAR contract today as HC…I guess that leaves REX to JETS ….LET THE PARTY’n begin in JERSEY were going to get our man….HELL YA…..
-
super T,
why do you keep calling the raiders a terrible franchise? that had an arsenal of a team! eric allen, tim brown, rich gannon, crockett, charles woodson, andre rison, are you crazy!?
-
Super T and UncleBobby,
Stop with the praise for Gruden, he’s a name only, and as for what he has “PROVEN” :
- won a SB his first year in tampa with a team built by Dungy, that gets him in the Barry Switzer wing of the hall of fame imo
- since then has not won a single playoff game, that gets him in the Mangini wing, only he had many more opportunities than Eric the young
- he is a supposed offensive “genius” or guru or whatever, when has tampa EVER had a great offense? his teams won with defense, built by Dungy, run by Monte Kiffin
- we ran Mangini out of town for going from 8-3 to 9-7 and missing the playoffs, guess what Chucky did this season? He went from 9-3 to 9-7, losing his last 4 games INCLUDING a HOME loss to the raiders the last game of the season in a MUST WIN situation.Yeah, you guys are right, he’s the man for this job…. pass the crack pipe please…..
If you want expereience, sure go with Gruden, but I would MUCH rather have someone that has yet to prove anything as a head coach over someone that has PROVEN what Gruden has the last 7 years in Tampa
-
Didnt Gruden’s team collapse worse than we did this year? Plus I want no part of favre getting any ideas of returning. Get Rex and start dominating some teams with our defense…..
Look at the remaining teams in the playoffs. 3 of the 4 have top 5 defenses.
-
THERE was an article already posted on the net that asked MIKE T. if he knew GRUDEN got fired…MIKE’S answer was YES that he knew it and that GRUDEN would not be an option So from the sounds of it there’s nothin to even argue about over GRUDEN he’s not even going to get an interveiw from what I read that was posted…..
-
Gruden is not the answer for our HC. Some people are better coordinators than head coach. Gruden is one of those people. I wouldn’t mind Gruden coming in as Offensive Coordinator if young schotty decides to bolt. I think the head coach experiencing albeit unsuccessful HC experience can be valuable. Gruden would make the running game the focus of the offense with an occassional down field throw to keep the defense honest. In the draft, I think we should trade down unless someone like, Rey Maualuga or a Vontae Davis falls to us. I think 2nd picks are the prime picks in this draft. That’s where a Tyson Jackson, Kenny Britt or Shonn Greene will be available.
-
Gruden may not be the answer. And I do believe in Rex. BUT I think it’s vary strange about how we keep going away from proven winning coaches. And keep scoping the unprovens. Is Tannenbaum afriad? I hope it doesn’t keep us miring in mediocrity.
Gruden won a SB with a team Dungy COULD NOT get over the edge. Don’t sell him short.
And players not responding to the “Parcells” type of coach is spelling an eminient danger of players ruling the leaugue. Or the inmates running the asylum. Billick, Gruden, Parcells, etc. types are not ths way of the future? God god! All the Ryan’s are that way.
I hope Rex is the man and leads us to the promised land. But I think we will see that Tannenbaum will eventually not be the man for our organization.
-
How did agent Joe S. ever get Rex Ryan as his client? !! I’ll never know…..
-
Lets go Jets hire Rex Ryan tonight after the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no one left other than Schotty and we all know how ****y it would turn out if thats the case.

Gruden may have been interesting, in the olden days, just after Mangini was fired.
From the moment Cowher was off the table, I wanted Ryan.
Aside from all his defensive, coaching, & personality *virtues,* what a novel idea, having a coach with actual ties to the Jets & Supe III.
We’ve tried everything else, why not try family?
I also think that plays into Ryan’s attraction to the Jets.
Now, if those stories about Schott being offended, if the Jets don’t pick him, are true… bye bye to him… and we can mosey on…
