We’re ‘stickying’ this post to the top.  See more news as it churns below:

Multiple sources are reporting that Rex Ryan will become the next Jets head coach.

ESPN Sr. NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen reports that the New York Jets will formally offer their head coaching job to Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols that he will accept the position.

The Jets notified other candidates, including offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, of their plans to hire Ryan, the sources said.

Bob Glauber has a great story in Newsday about Ryan’s thoughts and reactions after the loss in Pittsburgh.

    Welcome, Rex!

We’re counting on you. Your family history with the team means you have SuperBowl III glory in your blood. Not to mention the remarkable years, including a SuperBowl, with Baltimore.

Here’s your next challenge… to be the second Jets coach in your family to bring glory back to Gang Green and win a SuperBowl.

Is it in you? It’s time to bring glory back to this starving franchise.

  2. avatar Razor Shines says:

He called the Jets a great franchise and Cowher’s dysfunctional comment was a fabrication. The organization had a plan all along and they just had to wait for Ryan to be available and they did their due diligence until then. A great job by all involved, except the impatient, knee-jerk fans.

  3. avatar bozzie says:

Welcome REX!!! Excellent news!!! Congrads on a stellar season!! Next up….securing your staff…I hope Mr. T and Woody have given you some say in the coaches you want to bring in…let’s create a talented staff…

    OC Schotty, Callahan, Jadogzinski?
DC Dom Capers, Ron Martindale, Romeo Crennel?
    QB Jeff Jadogzinski?

What are your thoughts? Who do you want as our coordinators?

  4. avatar TimNC says:

I think this is a good move by the Jets. I’m glad that for better or for worse, they stuck to their plan and didn’t get all starry eyed over the availability of Gruden. Good job Mr. T.

  5. avatar chris From CT says:

thank god… he can come in now…get his staff together and start scouuting who he wants… draft wise and free agency wise

  6. avatar Electric Ham says:

Here we go baby well have some fire in the locker room now. Rex’s first mission = MAKE VG A SACKMASTER!

  7. avatar IRA says:

Maybe we will see a Jets defense like never before. For all those Gruden fans he was 9-3 and finished 9-7 and no playoffs. This was the right move.

  8. avatar Drew says:

Finally…I can stop hearing things like B-Schott is the favorite or crybaby Jet fans screaming that we are a joke and why havent we picked a coach yet…..Great job by Mr T and Woody here. Thought Mangini got a little bit of a raw deal but this makes it all just a memory….Eric who??

Rex, welcome to the craziest family is sport!!!

  9. avatar chris From CT says:

Couldn’t of said it better brotha drew… we are crazy dysfunctional angry but. The most die hard fans in sports…

  10. avatar david says:

How is that link a “great story”?? Its like 2 paragraphs long.

  11. avatar Kyle says:

Team is still a joke. You guys need to strart winning games before you talk about how this team isn’t a joke.

  12. avatar TOON2388 says:

Kyle – go back to the playground and get picked on by Eddie, Frankie, & Tony

  13. avatar better be right says:

This BETTER be the right decision. Think about this guys – if someone told you at the beginning of the season that we would win 9 games, but they would fire Mangini and hire a guy with no HC experience this site would be lit up like a pinball machine, and now you look like a bunch of pansy tannenbaum “yes men”.

They stabbed Mangini in the back, presumably to sell PSL’s and then go with an unknown? With all of the proven coaches available and out there these days, and we get an unproven? TANNENBAUM IS ON CRACK!

    FIRE TANNENBAUM HE SUCKS!!!!!

  14. avatar jay pee says:

Kyle, first off learn how to spell start . Then maybe you can start talking about our JETS.

  15. avatar R in CT says:

I’m kind of with better be right on this one — they sacrificed a guy who has proven that he could put a winning program in place for Favre & PSLs to bring in not Cowher but another unproven assistant?

Great, he plays aggressive defense — what about his offensive plans? Can he game plan an entire team? How well can he assess talent? How is he with clock management?

I’m not trying to rain on the parade — to me, he was the best of what was available — I’m just saying there’s a lot more to being the head guy than just blitzing more.

  16. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Almost time for the Favre retirement talk.

  17. avatar Igs says:

Wouldn’t Linehan be a sorry choice? He’s ruined offenses all over the place. Isn’t he the one that made the greatest show on turf sputter?

  18. avatar Murry Angelino says:

    let us pray

  19. avatar Ben says:

Holy crap, why are there fans here who complain about everything. The jets finally get the right guy ( I would have taken him over mangina last year) and you guys still complain. Mike T does a GREAT job with this coaching search and you say fire him. GET A LIFE PEOPLE

  20. avatar Igs says:

Well I’m nothing but happy about the D-Rex coming to town. Attitude all day. Hopefully he’ll bring some of the Raven’s personnel people with him. Somebody need to take over for Tanny, when Woody, wisely, relegates him to capology again.

    I can dream right.

  21. avatar Igs says:

Ben we’re Jets fans. 40 years of failure. If we want to complain about everything… SO BE IT!!!!!!!

  22. avatar johnl says:

i am a hugh jet fan but i just find it amazing that every team that all of our “star pick ups”came from are either in the superbowl or made the playoffs this year.so far all mike t has done is take other teams problem players away and give them money it seems.

  23. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Ben- you’re berating people over opinions and calling a grown man with an Ivy league education after a very nice spot of the female anatomy. Should you be judging? We don’t know how good a job Mr.T did until we get through at least one season we all know that. The Favre deal looked great to a lot of people too. We let the hype machine get out of control last year lets try and contain it this year.

Most exciting part of getting Ryan to me was that his HC challenged Holmes completion. That play happens all the time and we never see it disputed. If he brings that with him I’ll be happy.

  24. avatar Erik from NC says:

Congrats REX!!!! does anyone know anythink about this LB coach he is bringing here as DC? I like the fact that he is going to keep Schotty on…..

  25. avatar BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER says:

I have to agree with R in CT and better on this one. If you think abou it I’m sure that 49ers fans were pumped for Nolan and Bengals fans for Lewis. In a way, the Jets just hired them. He could just be a product of the talent.

Of course good news is that Schotty-if he is true to his supposed word-is headed out of town.

  26. avatar Igs says:

John, good point. I find Tanny makes a lot of big moves but they usually seem to be second rate. Like not making an offer for Moss one year and then picking up old man Favre the next.

I thought Gholston was a horrible pick. The Jets should’ve moved up to get McFadden or moved down for lower stakes. I can go on and on. He’s made some good draft picks. But overall I think Tanny’s a weak personnel guy.

Also, thoug I love the Ryan hiring, I’ve gotta say, as I was listening to Craig Carlton this morning and he pointed out how crazy it was that so many super bowl winning coaches were available and none of them got interviews.

  27. avatar jas says:

This is like halloween and all the candy has razor blades in it.
We get a new beginning with a guy who has actually proved he do somerthing (unlike Mangini-Def coordinator for Pats is like backup singer to Sinatra-so what) and then we make him keep the “Offensive Idiot” Shotty.

I’m done if they keep Shotty-

  28. avatar Erik in NC says:

Does anyone know anything About this Balt LB coach he is bringing in as DC? I like that Schotty will be back as OC…..

  29. avatar sadfkl says:

    WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and WOOT

  30. avatar Igs says:

I wouldn’t be so quick to deride the possibilities with Schottenheimer. i’m willing to atleast give him a year if Tanny takes a back seat on personnel. One thing that the John Gruden saga proves is that personnel choices have a great impact on your success as a coach.

  31. avatar JADDENHOPKINS says:

just to let you know rex ryan agreed to a 4 year deal to become the next head head cocah of the new york jets

  32. avatar WhoCares? says:

i like this move but does he have the right stuff for the offense? Was the d of ravens made him look good? i’ll bet he wil do 8-8 this year and 9-7 the next and then we will all be crying to fire him!!! it is like we are back in the Roman times…..one guys steps in we are all crazy and then he dies (fired) and then a new guy comes in we go crazy again….and forget about the old coach its a soap opera

  33. avatar ramble914 says:

As a Jet fan I try to be optimistic, but its hard. If Ryan is hired as the next HC, I’ll wish him and the team the best of luck. But I can’t understand how we didn’t consider a more proven candidate. There are some legitimate, proven coaches out there like Cowher (if we made a real pitch he would have accepted), M. Schottemheimer, Brian Billick, Shannahan, Holmgren, Fassel, Gruden, all of these guys have been to the SB (except MS). We have hired unproven assistant coaches the last three time without much success, I’m refering to Groh, Edwards and Mangini. I really wanted Brian Billick, I thought he had the right blend of experience, knowledge, and persona to be a real good HC for us, but it doesn’t look like it will happen, so I’ll have to jump on the Ryan bandwagon, just like I jumped on the Favre bandwagon.

  34. avatar WhoCares? says:

JADDENHOPKINS where is the link for proof?

  35. avatar ramble914 says:

    JAGG,

    What Ivy League education?

  36. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Isn’t Wesleyan Ivy league? Remembered watching something about him being one of the most well educated coaches.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wesleyan_University

I guess it isn’t, but it is upper tier. I still stand by the rest of my comments.

  37. avatar Igs says:

Well guys, if you’re so sorry. Thank your GM. i think rex will be successful. If he’s not we’ll run em outta town like Mangini. Let’s see how much he’s willing to listen to the offensive coaches.

  38. avatar Ben says:

I personally did not want gruden or most of the experienced coacheds out there (although i wouldnt have mind billick). Finding a great head coach is a craps shoot and those experienced coached were also assistants at one time. All great coached come out that way so maybe Ryan will be that next great coach. He reminds me alot of parcells for sum reason

  39. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Ramble,

What the hell does proven mean? Has ANY coach in the history of football won a superbowl with more than one team?

What worked then won’t necesarilly work now without the same personnel and players around you from your glory days of 96′. This is a league of adjustments, so I guess the rookie coaches that are in the superbowl are all of a sudden “proven” now huh?

  40. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Holmgren would have been my pick. He has gone to the superbowl with two teams and consistently produces a winner.

  41. avatar ridinmywave says:

I guess fassel and billick are “proven” coaches then….why haven’t they had a job in years,….. and it seems the teams that have overlooked them aint doin too shabby either with their “unproven coordinators”.

  42. avatar Pete57 says:

Lgs, you can’t kill Tanny for picking Gholston. He tried to trade up and down and there were no takers. He picked the highest rated guy (by just about everyone’s opinion). We were stuck in a bad spot.

  43. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Billick had a year off and Fassel hasn’t worked since Billick fired him. If Billick had found a QB other than what was left of Steve Mcnair he would have a job now. I think Fassel has lost touch with the game.

  44. avatar ramble914 says:

    Ridinmywave,

No coach has won a SB ith more then one team, but that dosen’t mean it can’t happen.

Proven means a coach with a convinsing winning percentage like Brian Billick who was 85-67 with the Ravens, he was 5-3 in the playoffs with a SB win.

He is everything that mangini is not. He gives informative press conferenses, is emotional on the sidelines, and can get his players pumped. If you don’t think being able to handle the media is important, especially in NY, you’re kidding yourself. I hope Rex can do it, because if not, he’s in for a miserable time in NY.

  45. avatar Joe S. says:

Woody and Mike…. Thank You for listening and Hiring Rex Ryan!

I think this is the First Time Ever as a 39 Year Jet Fan that Jet management hired the coach I wanted from the start.

It’s great to hear as a true long-time Jet fan that Rex Ryan wants to come to this organization without having to be 1st bribed and seduced (Like Cowher). He wants to be hear to lead this team “PERIOD”.

Jet Fans… The Jets under Ryan will finally have that identity that we haven’t had in years. The Jets will now have a “Shut Down Defensive” Identity. But I feel strongly that if they also keep Brian Shott as OC that we will also have a strong Offense. Which most teams that have a defensive ID don’t have.

I believe strongly that REX RYAN will win a Super Bowl as a Jet HC! Jet fans we will finally get that allusive Super Bowl!

Rex Ryan has some Super Bowl III bood in his veins and I would hope that he praises that his dad had somthing to do with that victory and that he was proud of that accomplishment for this Organization. That he knows that this organization and its fans deseve to win another and that he will lead this team with that one goal in mind!

Jet fans be Happy with this HIRE!

Rex Ryan will a Super Bowl for us!

  46. avatar ramble914 says:

Every HC in the NFL was an assistant at on time or another, thats a given. The unsuccessful ones far outnumber the successful ones hands down. I’m not saying that Rex can’t do it, I hope to heaven he can. But after Groh, Edwards, and Mangini, I wouldn’t mind having a guy this time who’s done it before.

  47. avatar Freeman24 says:

    Ramble,

Out of all the names you mentioned Billick was the one I wanted the least. He was an offensive “guru” when hired, that probably cost the Raven franchise 2 super bowls with his inability to field a respectible offense (develop a QB) to match the ridiculous defense that he inherited. Shannahan would have intrigued me but at the end of the day I respect this hiring AND Tannenbaum retaining control.

The Mangini decision was not a disaster, he had 2 winning seasons out of 3 and might someday still be a really good coach. Tannenbaum fielded a team with 7 (6 real) probowlers, tops in the league. Of course he manages the cap as well as anyone. I’ll trust him on this decision. Most importantly unlike Mangini, Ryan has really put in his time-paid his dues. He’s had consistent, positive results and has had a chance to grow into this oppourtunity. Mangini was thrown into the fire much quicker. It sounded like Harbough included Ryan in the head coaching process throughout the year which will have him better prepared than Mangini.
I also love that Buddy Ryan coached the 69 Jets. I’ll try any angle for another Super Bowl, why not kharma.

  48. avatar Ken says:

    YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!
    Sexy Rexy in the House!
Now for the love of God get rid of Schotty and Sutton.

  49. avatar ramble914 says:

    Freeman,

    Thats what makes horse races.

Like I said above, I hope to heaven that Ryan is successful, we as Jet fans deserve it. I’ll jump on this bandwagon like I’ve jumped on all the others.

  50. avatar Igs says:

    Pete,
Good point. Not completely true. he should have atleast had the football moxie to drop Bowens, Coleman, and Brian Thomas if he had to draft Gholston, and picked up Limas Sweed in the 2nd instead of trading up to get Keller. Great as keller is, among the 30 other tight ends on the team, he wasnnt a need pick. He was a ‘motivate/put chris baker on notice’ pick.
I gotta say, he’s made some good picks but I dislike tanny’s moves overall. He continously reminds me of Terry Bradway.

  51. avatar namath4ever says:

For the Billick and Cowher lovers man those teams sure fell apart after they left huh? No doubt its worth 10mil a year.

  52. avatar Ed L says:

hope he brings either lewis, scott, or suggs with him too

  53. avatar ridinmywave says:

    JustAgreenguy,

I understand your support of holmgren, accomplished good things just like parcells, but no one has ever won it with two different teams, new SB Winners emerge all the time.I think a coaches’ success hinges more on their scheming attributed best to the players on the team and that teams co-hesiveness rather than that coaches accilades achieved with some different team how many years back.

Would you say the dolphins would have won 11 games this year under billick, gruden. And schott etc ? Or maybe the falcons? Or he would have took the cards to the superbowl? The steelers wouldn’t be able to go back to the SB wothout cowher?

Just like players, coaches have a good stretch of years, but that is usually attained through familiarality with the personnel on the ONE team they coached and the built chemistry on that team, some other “proven” coaches got the oppourtunity to just walk into a good situation.

At the end of the day the guys(players) gotta go out on the field and perform, the seahwaks haven’t for the past couple years, it happens. As long as the players have that genuine respect from the coaches and their staff things should be good, and rex ryan has GREAT respect amongst players, including opposing players. Can’t really say the same about some of these other guys right now…(Billick, gruden, fassel)

  54. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Igs- Draft Sweed over Keller. The guy can’t catch an important ball. Way off Keller was a Waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy better pick. Now Baker and Franks can go.

  55. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I’m fine with Ryan. I liked Mangini, but he is gone. Oh well that is business. If we had to get a retread I liked Holmgren the most.

  56. avatar Ben says:

Their saying on the FAN now that the jets should have gotten Gruden. What do u guys think?

  57. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    That the media sucks.

Gruden had the 3rd lowest winning percentage (around . 510) of any coach to win a superbowl and he does a lousy job maintaining a roster.

Weeb Ewbank has the lowest, so who knows. I think Rex is better for what I want the team to be.

  58. avatar ramble914 says:

I don’t give credence to anything the FAN has to say, they sensationalize everything.

  59. avatar Igs says:

    JAGG

I didn’t say draft Sweed OVER keller. Remember the Jets moved up to get Keller. Im saying they should have stayed Pat and took Sweed. Since TE wasn’t a need position and WR was, still is, and is, in my opinion, one of the things that sunk the season.

Sweed will be big. I’ve seen him play. He drops a lot of balls. He’ll fixed that. I know you wouldn’t mind Braylon Edwards coming to the team and he had the same problem this year. Watch both of those WRs in the future. They’ll both be big.

Again, I’m not knocking Keller, but if Tanny wanted to make a big move, why not make one for a WR? See, he makes big moves, but they’re usually second rate.

  60. avatar Igs says:

Jets fit tampa 2 better right now. i wouldn’t want Gruden, but I wouldn’t want a GM situation that prevents every head coach that comes free from at least getting an interview.

  61. avatar ridinmywave says:

Francesca is the most opionated clueless face in the media. Its funny when callers make him look stupid and go agaisnt his thoughts, he gets agitated and cuts them off, what wuss.

  62. avatar Joe S. says:

WFAN’s Joe and Even have NO CLUE in what makes a HC!!!!

Joe’s comments right now prove to me that HE HAS no idea of what makes a great coach.

Rex Ryan will win the Super Bowl as the Jets HC!!!!

    What will HE say then???????????????

I certainly will remember what their saying today!!!

    These guy’s are WRONG!

BTW: Brain Shott will be the OC when the Jets will this Super Bowl!!!!!!!!!

What will they then say about Brian Shott ????????????

I will remember every word of what was said by the media in this city!!!!!!!!! EVERY WORD!!!!!!!

  63. avatar Igs says:

Woaaa. calm down Joe S. Your gonna blow a gasket. Football is a game you know.

  64. avatar Joe S. says:

lgs, tampa 2….. We played that BS CRAP when Edwards was HC!

That was a CRAP DEFENSE!!!!!! The WORST the Jets ever had!!!!

  65. avatar ramble914 says:

ESPN is reporting it’s a done deal!

  66. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Igs- I liked Sweed in the draft, but I think Keller will create more mis-matches. We still need a tall WR, but so far Sweed hasn’t show much and Edwards is like a less talented (in his prime) TO.

  67. avatar Chris C. says:

Welcome Rex!!! This is a great move by the Jets and Ryan should be able to improve their defense because their are definately some good players on both sides of the ball. I believe the coaching staff lost it for the Jets this year and I think Shotenheimer should go. Lets get a QB and WIN THE 2010 SUPER BOWL!!!
Does Ryan like the 3-4 or the 4-3?

  68. avatar Joe S. says:

[lgs, Woaaa. calm down Joe S.]

    I will NOT calm down!!!!

I am sick of the Media in this city!!!! SICK and TIRED of listening to all their BS CRAPola!!!!!!!!!!

Sources: Ryan to become Jets coachComment Email Print By Chris Mortensen

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan has agreed to a four-year contract to become coach of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources.

    NFL.com Video

Watch highlights from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 23-14 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Lawyers are reviewing contract language before an official announcement is made. A news conference introducing Ryan is scheduled for Wednesday.

The Jets made a formal offer to Ryan “about an hour” after the Ravens lost 23-14 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game, the sources said.

Ryan’s four-year contract is in line with other first-year head coaches that have been recently hired, but a Jets source said it was almost identical to the $11.5 million deal that the Rams gave New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Saturday.

“Any coach who believes in himself wants the opportunity, and it’s a great franchise,” Ryan told ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols on Sunday night.

Ryan was hired by the Ravens in 1999 as a defensive assistant and took on the coordinator’s role in 2005. The title of assistant head coach was added before this season.

Chris Mortensen is a senior NFL analyst for ESPN.

  70. avatar Fred App says:

I’m cautiously optimistic. If it works out, I’ll be thrilled, but aren’t where we were three years ago — hiring a young, bright, promising defensive coordinator with no head coaching experience?

Granted, Ryan is not as young, and has more of a proven record as coordinator. But he also has Ed Reed and Terrell Suggs and Ray Lewis and Ngata and lots of talent (and speed). If you think the Jets defense is suddenly going to look like the Ravens’ defense next year, you give waaaaay too much credit to coaching and not enough to talent.

My real concern is that by waiting to hire Ryan, we may have lost out on some good coordinators. Are we really keeping Schotty? Or, worse, bringing in Linehan? Who’s going to be the defensive coordinator? Putting together a good coaching staff is part of being a coach; it’s one place where Mangini fell short (and, judging from the staff he’s assembling in Cleveland, apparently learned his lesson).

  71. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

“Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you it is much bigger than that.”
    - Don’t remember

  72. avatar Igs says:

No, Joe, it was the worst Tampa 2 defense that the JETS ever put together. But remember what Abraham and Ellis did on that defensive line with Jason Ferguson in the middle. I actually remember that being a pretty nast defense. Especially when they had donnie ballhawk in the backfeild.

That’s the past though. I’m very happy with Ryan. The proper things need to happen in the FO to make this regime work thoug. Let Tanny be the capologist.

  73. avatar Chris C. says:

on the WR I believe the Jets will either take Nicks or Britt in the 2nd round OR they sign Chad Johnson or T. Owens if the Cowboys drop him.

  74. avatar Tom says:

Let them win the superbowl first please before we start wondering what people will say about them after they win. I like the hire but we are a long way from winning a superbowl.

  75. avatar Chris C. says:

I completely agree with Fred App. that Ryan did have great players to possibly make him look good. The Jets can not keep Shotty, but did they miss out on the good coordinators already?

  76. avatar swizzle81 says:

    Sweed had butter fingers yesterday.

Gruden is a tool and won a super bowl wih a team that Dungy built.

The idiots on the FAN (Benigno, Fat Mike) do not even deserved to be mentioned here, they are completely clueless about most things.

Anyone else see Boldin screaming at his OC yesterday, ESPN goes to even say he did not even participate in the teams post game celebration and walked out the back the door. He clearly is not happy in Arizona and would make a great fit here, if the Jets could dump Coles somehow.

Oh great hire with Rex Ryan, hopefully this works out.

  77. avatar Igs says:

1st pick – Darius Heyward Bey – big and fast

  78. avatar Ken says:

Forget about everything the Media says! Ryan is our man now, its all done.
I am happy to have a new attitude in the Jets organization. someone tough for a change and now we all need to hope things will turn around for us.
a lot is pending on the Coordinators to be. (hope they are both new guys)
what’s up with Rob Ryan his brother? i know Mangini wanted him in Cleveland, did he take the Job or did he wait to see where his brother ends up? anyone knows?

  79. avatar swizzle81 says:

Ryan should be able to hire his own staff as a HC, if he wants Schotty to stay, fine, but if he doesnt like him, then get rid of him.

  80. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Rob Ryan is Cleveland’s D coordinator. I’m glad brother won’t share a locker room. No brothers I know can work together that closely, all the time.

  81. avatar Chris C. says:

1st round pick Mark Sanchez. Check out my Mock Draft on http://www.draftkid.webs.com and start a Jets blog! I would love to have Chad Johnson with his baggage and would DEFINATELY LOVE to have Boldin. However before we talk about recievers is there anyone with a good solution at QB if Sanchez doesn’t fall?

  82. avatar George from Bklyn says:

    A few things:

TOON2388 – great George Carlin reference! His death in ’08 was one of the many things (including our collapse down the stretch) that made this past year such a rough one.

Ridinmywave – Couldn’t agree with you more about Francesca; the guy is a horse’s @ss, and his show is awful without Mad Dog (who’s show on Sirius/XM is great, btw).

As for Ryan being our new head coach, I’m excited! I liked Mangini and thought he got a raw deal, but I think we need a head coach that combines the fiery motivational style of a Herm Edwards with the game planning of a Mangini – from what I’ve read from his players, Rex Ryan is the best of both worlds.

Now that the question of our HC has been answered, the next item on the agenda is evaluating the talent both on the coaching staff and in the locker room. It’ll be interesting to see what remnants of last year’s team are still around if/when RR cleans house.

  83. avatar Joe S. says:

lgs, tampa 2…. In all years that Edwards was a HC for the Jets, the Jets could NOT STOP the RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was the worst Jet Defense EVER at stopping the run!!!!!!!!

You guy’s have a revisionist memoy!!! WOW…. you guy’s have been brain washed by the NY Media. All you comments reflect what the Media in NY have said.

You people need to start “thinking for yourselves” and not be parrorts for the NY Media!!!!!!!!!!

  85. avatar Ken says:

I would take Chad Johnson too with all his BS. look at NE when they took Randy Moss he had more BS than anyone. as long as he makes plays on the Field!!!!! eventually he will learn to keep his mouth shut. some of these guys need a strong authority and i hope and feel Ryan has it.

  86. avatar Chris C. says:

    everybody just think of this!
Rex Ryan was the Defensive Coordinator for the Ravens
    Ravens Defensive F.As
    Terrell Suggs
    Ray Lewis
    Bart Scott
    Dawan Landry
and THE JETS COULD DEFINATELY USE SOME HELP AT LB i heard that Ryan’s players liked him

  87. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Chad, Like TO and Randy (Who should be barred from the HOF for taking two years off in OAK. He was a freakin captain. Lead!) just want to win. They have big personalities and with their talent people have been kissing their butt for years. When they win they can be good team mates too.

  88. avatar Igs says:

    Chris, Nice Mock,

They have to take Josh Freeman in the 2nd if they miss Mark Sanchez in the 1st, but they should prioritize taken a QB and big Wr on day1. Maybe target Louis Murphy, who I like a little better than heyward Bey.

  89. avatar Igs says:

Joe s, i watched that team, my comments come from myself. My statement was that the jets roster NOW is more suited for Tampa 2. Not that doesn’t mean I want Gruden. Calm down. You disagree? I really don’t even feel like arguin about it. It was said as an aside to someone else’s question. Not really worh a discussion.

  90. avatar Zenlaw says:

I’m a heck of a lot happier with Rex than I would have been with the other candidates interviewed. For example, Spags may have been decent, but imagine trying to convert back to the 4-3 after the past three years. Cowher would have been perfect, but he wasn’t interested.

I wonder how Faneca and Pace are feeling watching their former teams in the Superbowl? I guess it’s not only hard being a Jets fan, but also hard to be a Jets player.

  91. avatar Chris C. says:

I really believe that they will sign Boldin or Chad Johnson in the offseason and I am a huge fan of Heyward Bey but they can’t spend a 1st round pick on a WR. They need a QB maybe a RB is Wells or Moreno is there, but I dont think we desperatly need one just yet. I could see the Jets trading up to get Sanchez if they need to. Ryan Baltimore def. coordinator 3 great LBs in F.A could sign one of them. What do you think about that?

  92. avatar Igs says:

I wouldn’t prioritze RB on day 1. Which is diff from what ive been saying the past month. Unless wells or moreno falls.

RB is the easiest position to transition to in the NFL. So RBs trajectory still rise as they come over where most positions dip. I’d prioritize takn WR and Qb though.

  93. avatar Igs says:

Boldin’s too small. Johnson’s too much of a headache. The thing about problem receivers is that they need the right environment or they can destroy team morale and other things – Plaxico anyone? I don’t beleive this franchise is the right place.

  94. avatar Igs says:

Great is they sign bart scott. Lewis for leadership but david harris already fits his prototype in the 3-4. Pace, Gholston, Thomas, Bowens, and Coleman all fit Suggs prototype, though they all underproduce.

  95. avatar Chris C. says:

    Jets Priorities
    1. QB
    2. WR
    3. LB
    4. CB
    5. RB

  96. avatar Drew says:

That Joe Beningo is a real ass. He is telling C Banks the Jets should have hired Gruden. His point…Hes a winner and Mangini had to go…His reason. When Mangini starts 8-3 you CANNOT miss the playoffs. Didn Gruden start 9-3?

As to Boldin..Wasnt he the idiot yelling at the OC when the game was on the line becasue he wasnt in the game. He was also the guy who wanted to TD (to pad his stats) late in the game against us and got knocked the F out!! He’s not that great…Keep him away from my team

  97. avatar Nick says:

    Hey Joe, your posts blow.

  98. avatar Igs says:

I’d put CB higher on that list, adding some depth on late day 1, early day 2. Maybe Asher allen.

Maybe Donald Washington late day 2, he’s got good size/speed.

  99. avatar Drew says:

I would get one of the ILB from USC to replace Barton in Rd 1. They will both be mid rounders….We can get a RB,WR, CB and QB in the 2-4 rds. We also need some depth on the O-line

  100. avatar Rharnick says:

As to the brother thing my brother and I work quite well together as attorneys. I heard Fassel talking about why George Young hired him the other day and he said it was because Young had seen Fassel improve the players he was coaching on a number of teams over a number of years. Has Ryan done that? His schemes have worked well in Baltimore with LEwis, Reed, Suggs et al. will they work as well here. I say we should have gotten someone with more of a track record of sucess. Shanahan would have been my choice after Cowher bowed out, they didn’t even talk to him. For all of those who love the idea of hiring a cordinator with no hc experience I ask you who were the most sucessful coaches in Jets history, Bill Parcells and Weeb Ewbank, two coaches with Rings before they got here, and if I can get a coach like that I go for it. Everywhere Parcells has gone and Ewbank went they were sucessful, Holmgren to. You don’t always win the ring but if you make the playoffs at least its exciiting. I’m okay with them looking for the next Landry or Lombardi, but so far it hasn’t worked nor do I trust Jet management to make the right decision. So why not go with a safe choice? I suspect money and keeping Tannenbaum in charge of personnnel had a lot to do with it. Vernon Gholston, D-Brick not to impressive so far. I’ll give Tannenbaum one more year, see if Gholston turns it around, but right now I’m not to hopeful.

  101. avatar Chris C. says:

I really don’t know much about Gruden. Is it possibly that he could be a Jets coordinator and would he be offensive or defensive hypothetical

  102. avatar Igs says:

    Drew,
i wouldn’t lament that dirty blow to boldin. it was uncalled for. Smith showed nothing in that whole game and then want to lay a dirty hit on Boldi in garbage time. what a mess.

    Chris –

we forgot aot safety. I’d pioritze it like this:

    QB
    Wr
    S
    CB
    LB

  103. avatar Joe S. says:

    lgs, you’re blind!

The current Jet talent in the front 7 is 3 -4 talent! With mega Guaranteed contracts BTW! Need to upgrade at inside LB with speed/size and an effective back up to Jenkins! Every time Jenkins was taking a needed break teams ran right up the middle. Like they were waiting for his break to call these plays.

Also 3 – 4 talent is Revis and Rhodes!

NEED a Strong Safety and another corner! Lowrey may grow into the other corrner but they need to find another corner with Revis type talent!

Coach them to be more aggressive!

That is all this defense needs! The talent in the front 7 is strong!

On offense. Need to alow for a young QB battle and let the best man win. Ratliff will win in my opinion.

Needs on Offense: A Young Drafted Receiver with BURNER SPEED and HANDS! Keep all other receivers on the team.

A Drafted Franchise Running Back to groome to replace Jones full time in year two.

A Drafted TE with all around skill. Blocking and receiving.

More quality debth at offensive line.

The Jet player needs are minimal as described above. Key is continuity on Offense!

  104. avatar BigKatFan says:

    Let the transformation begin….

  105. avatar Rharnick says:

as to those denigrating Gruden perhaps you forgot that he turned around the Raiders and reached the playoffs three times before being traded to the Bucs and winning the Super Bowl. Not to bad.

  106. avatar Drew says:

    Rharnick:
I disagree with almost every point you made…excpet that Gholsten didnt show much. I liked what we did here. I think the majority of this crazy fanbase is also pretty happy with how this turned out

  107. avatar Chris C. says:

    Joe S.,
That is way too much for just one draft… Ratliff!!? and Unless Wells or Moreno falls to #17 and Sanchez doesn’t we do not need a franchise RB just yet

  108. avatar Jdogsofla says:

If you think we waste a 1st draft pick on QB you’re insane. We haven’t even given Ratliff a chance. Or Ainge. Or maybe even Clemens again. The Farve question hasn’t even been answered yet.
You don’t waste picks in the draft if you have talent that hasn’t even been tested.
We’ll have to see what the brain trust comes up with.

If we bust on this draft thenTannenbaum needs to go. We’ll see.

See what Rex does with Vernon too. Maybe he’ll make him our strength & conditioning coach. LMAO….

  109. avatar Igs says:

Look guys, Joe s is actually bloging about the team instead of hurling insults at everybody.

Notice how every year the Jets have an average to really good defense. But we watch our offense go 3 and out over and over. Then the defense just gets so worn out and demoralized from spending so much time on the field.

Well if we don’t prioritize our offensive in the draft then expect to see that again. Remember, the Ravens at their best have always been hamstrung by a week offense.

  110. avatar Drew says:

    lgs:.
Dirty hit or not Boldin is a me player. The were stories that he wanted that TD the day he got knocked out….Plus the stunt he pulled yesterday during the most important drive the Cardinals history was disgusting. He is the poster boy for a ME player.

  111. avatar mr.die-hard jets fan says:

finally. no more good games for thigpen, fitzpatrick, and rusell. so happy

  112. avatar Drew says:

I want no part of Sanchez. I trust Carroll and he thinks the kid is not ready. I think Moreno will be there as will B Wells. I just hate to take a RB in RD 1. There are no big WR that will fall so I take the best LB/CB available. We can get way more value on offense in the 2nd and 3rd rounds

  113. avatar Igs says:

    Joe,

im through with the 3-4/4-3 conversation. As much of a mess as this defense was this year, put together with elmers glue, it was not a 3-4 or 4-3. It was a mess. But the players are still more suited for a 4-3. More lineman. Big linebackers. lots of bulk. Trusnk is even a cover lb.

Reguardless of that, D-rex is here and I’m looking forward to how the FO manipulates the personnel situation. And Im looking forward to D-rex’s 3-4.

    Drew,

I agree. More importantly, as much as i like his toughness, he’s built more like a posession guy. Fitz is your downfeild playmaker. We need a Fitz type, moss type, keyshaw Johnson type, Ande johnson type, etc, etc.

  114. avatar Drew says:

I love the fact that nobody is talking about the HC position. It seems like things are getting back to normal…..NICE!!!

  115. avatar Igs says:

Yea, but can we talk about this GM position?

  116. avatar ramble914 says:

    Drew,

You trust Carroll? Why? Because he has no other agenda but what is best for Mark Sanchez? Come on! After what I saw this season from Sanchez, I’d take him in a heart beat, he looks as ready as any college QB I’ve seen in the last 5 years.

  117. avatar Joe S. says:

How can a defense that prior to this season has NOT stopped the run since the 2000 season be a average to really good defense?????

lgs…. your comment {Notice how every year the Jets have an average to really good defense} proves that you don’t know what your looking at!

Do you remember those Ted Cotrell defenses?????

Do you remember the 1st two season’s of the 3 – 4 under mangini against the run???

    I think NOT!!!!!

  118. avatar Drew says:

lgs…We can always talk about that….lol

    ramble914…

I trust Carroll as he has built a dynasty at USC and knows NFL talent. I saw no difference between what Sanchez did and John Davis Booty did. He is an average QB in what I saw.

  119. avatar Igs says:

So they would be considered average. right Joe? Im foggy but i remember atleast 1 good defensive year under each coach herm and mangini.

But my point is more that I saw prety good defenses get worn down. So of course they wouldn’t look good in the end rght Joe.

For example. Don’t you think if our offensive situation was better, then the Chris Jenkins would have gotten a lot less reps and needed a lot less breaks and maybe not gotten injured. Wouldn’t that affect defensive numbers.

    Remember the old addage,
The best defense is a good offense and the best offense is a good defense.

Lets prioritize the offense a little more.

  120. avatar Rharnick says:

What are you disagreeing with Drew? Ewbank and Parcells weren’t the most sucessful Jet Coaches? Shanahan isn’t more qualified than Ryan? My brother and I don’t work together well? Gruden didn’t turn Oakland around and win a Super Bowl in Tampa? Ghostlon at least for this year wasn’t a bust? Your satisfied with D Brick? Tannenbaum has done a great job? Every time the Jets have chosen an unproven coach we went backwards accept with walt Michaels and I think he hcd before. Which one?

  121. avatar Igs says:

The GM situation scares me. i dn’t think Tanny knows intangibles or how to put together a team. Im gonna keep saying it all day because it’s the bottom line. Bradway, then Tanny. I’m just nt happy.

  122. avatar ramble914 says:

    Drew,

Go and check out Sanchez’s stats this year, Booty never came close. Sanchez has the size, arm, speed and smarts to be a good NFL QB. MY oponion.

  123. avatar Igs says:

I’d be happy if they took sanchez. But knowing Tanny, he’ll take a 30th CB or a 20th TE addressing no real round 1 need on the team.

  124. avatar Joe S. says:

Yes… I would agree That Favre did NOT have enoung long drives this season and his turning the ball over 22 times resulted in the defense staying on the field too long and often.

Chad always had long drives when he had a decent line to play behind!

So are we to go back to this QB argument?

  125. avatar Igs says:

wrong agan Joe. They never gave Chad the protection that he needed. When they won, he had long drives, and the defense remained dominant. When they lost he had short drives, 3 and outs and turnovers. The defense wore out and gave up big plays by the late 3rd and 4th quarter.

This has been one of the most consistant patterns that ive seen with the jets over the years.

Why argue. You’ve seen it to. hahaha. i like yo joe. you’re dedicated.

  126. avatar jas says:

    players my butt.
    we need a real oc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  127. avatar Pete57 says:

Mr. Die Hard, I had that same thought. During the season I was going crazy, looking at our defense make inexperienced QB’s look good week after week. Well, Ryan and Balt’s D made Flacco look like a rookie yesterday. I loved how Baltimore sent pressure on almost every passing play.

  128. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Igs- Don’t say that! My greatest dreams for this franchise is a roster that has some logic. Maybe even 3 RBs.

  129. avatar Chris C. says:

You can’t say that Sanchez is an average QB after watching his performance against a good PSU defense in the Rose Bowl. Moreno will most likely be there for the Jets to take, but I dont think they will take him. Tanny probably wont do this, but they should trade up to get Sanchez, their absolute biggest need!

  130. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Give Thigpen some credit. He looked good in every game after ours too. If he is available I’d take him.

  131. avatar Igs says:

    jagg

so we’re on the same page. im hoping they let soe balt people come in and take over personnel decisions or atleast have input.

  132. avatar Jerry says:

    Re Sanchez:
    1. He will be long gone
    2. We don’t need anothjer young QB, we have three. What we need is a QB coach who can one of these guys to perform like an NFL QB.
    3. The Jets will address one of their primary needs; CB, S, DE, ILB.

  133. avatar Chris C. says:

SHOTTY NEEDS TO GO. AWFUL PLAY CALL LAST YEAR. I would like to have Thigpen, but I bet the Chiefs keep him and take Orakpo.

  134. avatar Drew says:

    -Shanny wasnt available
-Dumb comarison with NFL and Law firm
-Gruden did a nice job in Oakland but then won a SB with Dungy’s defesne. He also hasnt done squat since….6 years zero playoff wins
-I’m satified with Brick so far. We could have done alot worse.
    - I tyhink Tanny has done a good job. Dont love him but he has done wonders for the cap and FA’s
    - As much as I didnt like Herm we did do pretty well under him. If Brien makes a FG werein the AFC Championsh game
    - I agreed on VG and Parcells…..

I just thought your post was very wordy and not completely accurate. Sorry bud

  135. avatar Chris C. says:

The Jets do have Ainge and Clemens, but niether of them will be a top 15 QB or help the Jets win. The Jets need to take a franchise QB that can actually start and Sanchez might be there if the 49ers pass him up, which I believe if very possible.

  136. avatar leons legs says:

    rex ryan – check

now we need to keep going

    asmoguah
    hoshmanzadeh
    let shotty go

  137. avatar Drew says:

    Ramble:

I didnt say they were the same….Clearly Sanchez will be a 1st rounder and Booty went in the 5th round. My point was he’s not Carson Palmer. Carroll probably has 3 Sanchez’s on his roster so i dotn think it was sour grapes. He was asked by Sanchez for his advice and the kid went against his Dad and Carroll and did what he wanted. Just dont love the guy as a top QB and Carroll comments only confrimed it

  138. avatar Joe S. says:

    lgs,

I would still make the case that if the Jets keep Chad as QB this season… The Jets woulld have won 12 games and would have made it into yesterday’s game. If they would have won yesterday is debatable.

I made this argument before Favre was discussed in the off season and I made it after the season.

This is not current reality and I don’t want to discuss it again.

Rex Ryan is now the guy and he will win the Jets a Super Bowl with YES with Brian SHott as the OC and YES with one of these QB’s on the Jets current roster!!!!!

Just remeber my posts from this period of time for future reference!

  139. avatar Chris C. says:

i would love the stud CB of the raiders in F.A. Houshmanzadeh is not an option they will resign him. Shooty needs to go I agree with you leons legs

  140. avatar Drew says:

    Joe S????? 12 games??

Come on. Please not the Chad argument again. The season would have looked simialr to the year we just had. 9-10 wims chance at the AFC East and a shot to win a 1st round game. Which would have been against the Ravens who would have done exactly waht that type of defense always does to Chad. Pick him off and beat the crap out of him….12 wins is a reach.

  141. avatar Drew says:

I didnt love Favre and he won maybe 2-3 games in the 1st 11 but to say that Chad would have won 12 games is a bit of a reach

  142. avatar Chris From CT says:

    my list…

    Nnamdi
Suggs or Scott or Lewis (pref suggs)
    D. landry
I think we need to package something move up and get crabtree…

  143. avatar Chris C. says:

okay who knows we could be in the playoffs with chad or we wouldnt… but it is over and done with. we need to think about the future, not what could’ve been.

  144. avatar GregNJ says:

Rex is a Defensive Guy he’s going D-fence first round… my Guess a stud Safety or CB and those are needs… Who cares for a QB in the first round; lets get this D-fence together first. I honestly believe Ratlief if given the oppurtunity and Clowney will produce for this offense. But D-Fence is going to be crucial especially coming into his first year as HC and having the background of a Defensive GURU.

  145. avatar Igs says:

    Joe

I don’t think either wold have made the playoffs because the front office refused to supply either QB with a numer 1 option at WR, wich was as big a problem this year as anything.

    Disagree?
Remember how Randy Moss made Culpepper look. Remember how T.O. mad Donavan McNabb look? Testeverde and Keyshawn? When you have a great experienced QB that doen’t have the most accurate arm… giv ehim a mistake eraser right?

  146. avatar Chris C. says:

I dont think we should trade too much for Crabtree which we will have to. And I dont think there is much of a chance of the Jets moving up to the top 5

  147. avatar Skip says:

I rank CB the highest need. If we don’t have another corner like Revis, Rex won’t be able to blitz near as much. Should be as follows:
    CB
    WR
    S
    QB
    LB
WR is second because we can’t open up the offense if we don’t get a speed guy to stretch the field.

  148. avatar jetsfan says:

do we have any money to spend this offseason?

  149. avatar Skip says:

I hear 10 mil over cap

  150. avatar Igs says:

Who cares about qb in the first round?

How about the steelers, ravens, and eagles? 3 of the 4 teams in the final 4.

  151. avatar Ken says:

Ratliff maybe great. he showed some great things pre season now we need to see what he has for real? again Cassel never played! with Bellicheat at his side look what happen. Ratliff maybe even better we need to see. and give him a chance he may blow us away we don’t know. WR a must!!!! Coordinators a must!!!
and Rex Ryan Welcome to the Jungle (NY Jets)

  152. avatar Chris C. says:

I agree that we need a CB badly, but with our #1 pick there is not a guy with it. In the second round we could maybe get Alphanso Smith and shape him into a good CB.

  153. avatar Chris C. says:

We are not going to count on Ratliff to get us far into the playoffs!!! and now is not the time to try new things and take chances

  154. avatar TOON2388 says:

G from Bklyn – nice catch on the Carlin reference – big loss this year – just gad I was able to see him live a few times before he left us

  155. avatar jetsfan says:

best possible player on the board……. weather its a s, cb, or qb

  156. avatar mobiliter says:

If Rex is coming…bring in Suggs and or Peppers. Boldin @ WR and see what Clemens can do with a decent oline. Suggs played his balls off with one arm yesterday.

  157. avatar Chris C. says:

I agree, but I would say CB QB or LB because there is only one safety in round 1 going to the texans

  158. avatar Mets/Jets Fan aka Disappointed says:

Let’s get some buzz about Ray Lewis taking over for Eric Barton. Talk about making that transition into a legit defense. Ray Lewis still has 2 high energy years in him. By that point, he would be ready to hand the reigns off to David Harris. Plus if the Jets sign Lewis, they can get the best available CB in the first round at pick #17.

  159. avatar Chris From CT says:

darius butler or vontae davis… to me are our best shots… cuz jenkins will be taken

  160. avatar Joe S. says:

Chad made the playoffs with Miami. They had Zero recevers only a TE for Chad to throw to.

This is over and done with.

Go Rex and QB’s on the current Jet roster!

  161. avatar Chris C. says:

vontae davis, but Lewis will finish his career with Baltimore, we have a chance at Suggs

  162. avatar Joe S. says:

[do we have any money to spend this offseason?]

Yes without Favre we have $14 Million!

  163. avatar Igs says:

the only ravens linebacker that fits a jets need is bart scott. forget about suggs and lewis.

  164. avatar Skip says:

We traded moss for coles because of the offense we had to deploy with pennington. coles was better across the middle and could go deep enough for weak armed chad. this year with favre, moss would have been better to have.
I hope Favre does come back, but ONLY if he has surgery to correct the arm problem he got late in the season. A strong armed Favre and a new speed receiver and my optimism would grow substantially.

  165. avatar Chris C. says:

I actually like Bart Scott better than Suggs and Lewis.
Wouldn’t things be a lot easier with Ed Reed? haha Ryan will find out that they were a lot easier with him.

  166. avatar Igs says:

no skip, we let coles go to the skins. THEN we traded moss for coles, our own former player. A parting gift from the great terry bradway and his impotent disciple Mike tannenbaum. Expect more of the same.

    joe.

    you’re an idiot.

  169. avatar Drew says:

We will have some money but not alot. We can maybe get 1 decent FA. I think Suggs might be out of the question

  170. avatar Joe S. says:

    lgs,

    You’re a blind moron!

  171. avatar Drew says:

    Read the article Mel31602…

This goes back to a point I made when they hired Harbaugh. They needed a guy that was not tight with the defense. Ryan and those players have been together for a while. They couldnt have the inmates run the asylum. You saw what happened when Billick let the defense run the team after the SB year. The team was out of control. Defebse hated the offense and so on… Ravens not hiring Rex had nothing to do with if he was capable. They needed a new face in the organization…..Which is why is works great fro us.

  172. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    Thanks Mel that was cheery.

  173. avatar Drew says:

  175. avatar Drew says:

Just read that Boldin did not celebrate with the team after the game and left the locker room before the media really could talk to him…..An absolute class act by a guy who’s team just shocked the world and made the Super Bowl….you know what everyone plays for in the NFL. I was glad he was okay biut even more happy our worst tackler knocked him the hell out. What a piece of crap player….Anybody still want this guy for huge money??

  176. avatar Igs says:

    Joe

You learned football from playing madden video games.

  177. avatar Joe S. says:

I never played a madden video game. I am not in that geneation.

You’re wrong again lgs! At least your consistant! Consistantly wrong!

  178. avatar Igs says:

    Joe S.

You certainly don’t seem to know how to read what’s happening on the field and spend a lot of time insulting people: the bloggers, the radio personalities, the weekly news. Stop insulting people and go brush up on your game watching, slow mo.

  179. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

You two make me not want kids.

  180. avatar Joe S. says:

I don’t need to brush up on my game.

I have watch every play of every Jet game for the last 39 Years and a season ticket holder since 1978.

I understand what I see on the field!

  181. avatar Igs says:

no you don’t joe. your chataracts are getting in the way.

but here, i lost my original points.

Tanny’s gotta go back to capology and leave personnel alone.
QB and WR on day 1.
tier 2 FA CB is we can afford it.
No ravens linebackers except maybe scott.
    Cut all those tweener LBs.
Cut all those extra CBs and TEs.
Shone Green or Rashad Jennings in the draft.

  182. avatar Chris C. says:

    I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH IGS

  183. avatar Joe S. says:

Back to what is needed. BTW: Mike Fransessa say’s Brian Shott, Callahan & Westhoff staying with Ryan.

    So to sum up needs:

    Defense:

    SS – Strong Safety
    CB – Revis typ talent
    ILB: Speed and Size
NT – to back up Jenkins

    Offense:

WR – Draft with Burner Speed and Hands
RB – Franchise to rplace Jones in Year 2
    OL – Quality back ups

QB – Not necessary – Next QB is on Roster – May draft another to develop buy won’t Start in 2009.

  184. avatar Ken says:

Chris C What do you mean its not time to take chances? we don’t know how anyone will turn out?! so it is a chance no matter where you go. why not check out what you already have instead of another maybe you need to waste a pick for? everyone is a chance especially with the Jets.

  185. avatar Mel31602 says:

Haha glad I can be of service JustaGreenGuy- though someone on Cimini’s blog found it first.

  186. avatar Igs says:

since the jets have had few wining season in the last 40 years, we have t be able to look at what has not been working over the long term.

1 is lack of balance when it comes to offensive personnel.

Another that applies to our QB question: The Jets have a habit of trying to develop 3rd class talent for positions that other teams tend to use 2st class talent:

I.e.” Don’t draft a 1st round QB to lead the team, sign a 3rd class and hope he developes into a franchise qb. I beleive this is the wrong formula. And most of the successful teams in the nfl would agree, especially the steelers, ravens, and eagles.

I think if you can get the rigt strong armed QB in round 1, you go with it , especially if you already have a solid line.

  187. avatar Pete57 says:

Mel, was the Steelers not promotinng Whisenhunt to HC telling? Obviously not. They just liked Tomlin better. Very similar situations.

  188. avatar Pete57 says:

Lgs, I see your point. My personal preference is to have the right coaching in place to develop a young QB over 2 or 3 years. But I agree, if we have the means to move up in the draft a get a top flight QB, then I’m all for it. I wanted Jay Cutler when he came out and last year I liked Flacco and Henne. On the other side, I wasn’t sold on Matt Ryan, but let’s see what he does in year 2.

  189. avatar nyckage says:

I hope your happy Joe S, for the past few weeks, you’ve commented how much you have had a wet dream about Ryan, now let’s hope your guy comes through

  190. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

She didn’t write it. A lot of people in Pittsburgh were furious over letting Whisenhunt go.

  191. avatar Joe S. says:

I am happy for the last few weeks of promoting my choice for HC!

Rex Ryan will be the HC on the Jets next Super Bowl WIN!

So it as been said…. SO let it be written!

  192. avatar johnl says:

i wish somebody would tell nyjets.com that mangini is not here anymore so they can write something on the hiring of rex already even though it’s not “official”

  193. avatar Mel31602 says:

Thanks J.A.G.G for your support- like he said I didn’t write the article I just found it. I think Tanny is a great GM and from what I’ve read they liked Ryan but were blown away by Harbaugh. The Rams wanted Ryan too this year so he can’t be all bad. It’s not like with Mangini and Herm where we were the only team interviewing him.

  194. avatar Igs says:

Tanny’s a lawyer masquerading as a GM. the fact that we haven’t been able to get a downfield threat in his time here says a lot to me. I’m unimpressed and doubt if the jets will have success with him around. There’ll just always be a glass ceiling.

  195. avatar Pete57 says:

Joe, just to be clear, the line goes, “So let it be written, so let it be done.” Of course from “The Ten Commandments”.

  196. avatar LAJetsFan says:

I supported the Mangini hiring, liked him for a while…and then turned on him pretty quick. But that’s my right as a fan. After watching him win some games and then blow big ones down the stretch (blame Favre all you want, but some of that play-calling was AWFUL), I was all too happy to see him get the axe. I’m excited to have Ryan join the team, since he seems to have that fire and that passion that Mangini either lacked completely or kept hidden in the locker room — give me a break, if you’ve got any fire in you at all, you bring it out on the field.

And for those of you blabbing about how we’re in the same place we were three years ago…how so? Rex has been the Ravens DC for three years. Mangini was the Pats DC for one year, and it was under everybody’s favorite defensive wizard (and did the Pats even have a DC the year before? The year they won the Super Bowl?).

So you’re comparing a star DC who’s proven successful for multiple years to a guy who basically got promoted to defensive coordinator when, just one year prior, the team had proven they didn’t even need one to win. And then we get a giddy and sign him up, pat ourselves on the back, and watch the same old disappointment play out.

I wish him well, but Rex is far superior and far more established in this league than Mangini. It’s like comparing apples to lettuce.

  197. avatar Pete57 says:

Lgs, in fairness to Tanny, wouldn’t you say our roster is alot better now then when he came aboard 3 years ago? Sure we have spots that still need to be addressed, but you can’t get everything you want in 1 or 2 years. I like our team much better now than 3 years ago, and that includes the change in coach. I give Mr T alot of credit for seeing this team needed new leadership and for firing his friend without hesitation.

  198. avatar LAJetsFan says:

That’s FOUR years of coordinating for Ryan, my mistake.

Check the scoreboard: Mangini 1, Ryan 4.

  199. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

LAJetsFan- Won’t question Ryan’s credentials, but Mangini is more established in the league. 3 years as a HC does that.

  200. avatar ridinmywave says:

Wait a min……sanchez is a top flight qb? Lol
He’s not even as good as matt leinart! Lol, even his coaches can see that…better yet his own FATHER! Lmao
And were supposed to be assured that he’ll be a better qb than ratliff?

Ratliff has shined the brightest out of ANYBODY in the preseason, not just on the jets but in the entire league! And some of you don’t wanna give him a chance and bet it on sanchez?

The best qb to come out of USC to me has been no other than……matt cassel, lol!
Not your typical 1st round draft story…..neither was brady

  201. avatar john r says:

who made all the draft picks in baltimore. i know this is a little off topic but without those picks, the ravens never go anywhere

i know ryan was involved but how much?

  202. Make it official already. Do it today and Obama can have tomorrow all to himself!

  203. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Palmer is 10 times better than Cassel. Put him on NE and they make the playoffs.

  204. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    Palmer could hit Moss deep.

  205. avatar Pete57 says:

We have good scouts, and don’t forget Scott Cohen. He’s our asst GM. He was director of player personnel for 7 years with the Eagles. He was a big part of putting that team together. I think many fans have a wrong idea of how Tanny works. He knows he doesn’t come from the player side of things. That’s why hiring Cohen was great. It showed that he understands he needs help in that area. He’s not as much a control freak as some think.

  206. avatar Pete57 says:

ridinmywave, I share your hope and optimism re Ratliff but you can’t use the preseason as a guide. If you look at the preseason QB leaders over the last 20 years, 9 times out of ten it is a backup, who never amounts to anything.

  207. avatar Igs says:

    Pete,

Based on how far the team has gone and based on performance I can’t definatively say that we’re much better off:

    1. We still haven’t gotten the passing game together. Now that’s more because of the lack of downfield threats. Yet Tanny changes QBs, dafts qbs and tries to turn them into WRs and just about everything else but draft a big downfield guy.

    2. Vilma should have been kept around to play next to Harris. why get rid of your best leader becaus ehis 3rd year is down?

    3. bla, bla, bla, i’ve said all his before. but o, the team is not particularly better.

  208. avatar john r says:

understanding talent is so important. i mean look at detriot, all those high draft picks and they come away with nothing san francisco, and oakland are the same way

the jets have drafted well in the 1st round, but what gets a team a superbowl is those late round picks. i mean rhodes was are late round hero, but he hasnt been that great in the last 2 seasons

  209. avatar Ken says:

Did i see someone refering to Carson palmer and comparing him to Cassel? with all do respect to all the QB’s out there if Palmer had an O line and a mediocre Team there isn’t a QB who could compete wiith him.
talent wise he is #1 and just like every QB in the world today. you need OLine. Brady had time to do his Taxes before getting rid of the Ball. it helped.

  210. avatar Igs says:

Thaks John R. Everyone seems to want to get around that fact.

  211. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Rhodes was good at the end of 07. Not so much this year. Lowery , Leon and Stucky were all late round contributors

  212. avatar ridinmywave says:

I’m not putting blind faith with ratliff, but he has outshined his competition and hasn’t given us fans ONE reason to doubt his abilities. You can’t tell me one thing or one aspect of sanchez’s game that outshines ratliff’s at this point.

The amount of qb busts in the first round have been uncanny in recent years. Only support of sanchez’s hopefull success in the nfl is based on his performance in his last game. So what?…Remeber vince young?lol

Fact of the matter, he is NOT worth wasting a first round pick on for the jets, he will be another project and development on ANY team that picks him, so what issues would he address for this team?…how about none! We address the RB, WR, or a defensive position in the first round, thomas is on his last legs….we have nothing but unproven young qbs on this team…no need for another one

  213. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Plus our 3 and 5th rounders went for Jenkins.

  214. avatar Chris C. says:

    John R.,
Guess what the Lions, 49ers, and Raiders all have in common other than bad late draft picks. BAD QBs!!!! Russell, Smith, and who knows about the Lions have bad QBs. Th Raiders and the 49ers have a good build around their QB, but they don’t have a good QB. The Jets have all the talent around a QB and they need a QB that can get the ball to them not Ratliff Ainge or Clemens. The recieving core isn’t bad with Coles, Cotchery, and Keller. They could use a stud WR, but those 3 should be enough for a QB. The o-line is built very well. They need a Safety a CB and a LB on the Defensive Side. Of course every year every team and every fan wants a RB, but this year we do not need it, unless all of our guys are gone and Moreno or Wells falls. It is just not a need right now with Jones and Leon. We are set at RB with Richardson blocking for them. EVERY TEAM THAT WINS CAN BLOCK FOR THEIR QB AND RUSH THE QB. Now the Steelers couldn’t block for Ben in the regular season, but in the post season they have and look where they are. Cardinals can block for Warner and put pressure on the other QB.

  215. avatar swizzle81 says:

Igs aren’t you a Giants fan as well?

  216. avatar Drew says:

Is there such a thing??…A Giants and Jets fan?? Please dont get me started..

  217. avatar mikejets says:

ITS A DONE DEAL OH YEAHHHH !

  218. avatar ridinmywave says:

I was being sarcastic when I said that cassel was the best qb out of usc, I do like palmer as a qb, but those 20 picks last year hurt as well as his little performance this year before the injury. Its not as if tj and chad left town, and yes I do attribute cassel’s success to the patriots o line and system in place, but he did make some spectacular plays this season, I give the kid that much.

  219. avatar GANGGREEN says:

The JETs are not going to draft a QB in the first round the haven’t in the past they WONT now…I see it like this CB/LB/SS they will draft the best in talent at one of these positions in the first round and even possible in the second also…THIRD round if we even have this pick I see a receiver is a need RIGHT NOW not for just the future, later rounds will be depth at RB,NT,OG,and more LB help THIS years draft will be dominated by defensice picks…YOU heard it here first LMAO

  220. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Cassel isn’t a total bum, but I think he is Scott Mitchell 08. Palmer developed bad mechanics from bad protection and no running game. Too much pressure on him since Rudi Johnson began to decline. If he can find himself again he will be a probowler again soon.

  221. avatar john r says:

first and foremost the jets dont have a QB, and if clemens is our savior, well then we are once again Fed

but look at PITTs defense. everyone of those players were drafted by Pitt or not drafted at all and picked up off waivers. someone in that front office can look a player and know that he will be good or bad.
Even look at the offense, willie parker wasnt drafted, and they picked big ben in the 1st round. going by yahoo’s depth chart, they only have 1 player that they didnt draft, which was justin hartwig
    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/pit/depthchart

now lets look at the jets. can you say that samething, no. can you tell me that kellen clemen was a solid 2nd round draft pick, no. that draft didnt have QB’s and he was the 3rd one taken in the middle of the second round. he was taken before Maurice Drew, and Greg Jenning to name a few.

the jets can run, we all know that but we dont have a QB or wide recievers and so how can a new coach solve those 2 big problems

  222. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

The KC draft had Cutler, Lienart and Young. He was the 4th taken. That list includes a probowler, a former OROY (Who is mentally ill) and a back up to a two time MVP who is in the Super Bowl. That back up lost one game in his college career btw. Come on.

  223. avatar JetsDaily says:

Isn’t it great to finally be talking about the actual team again though, and not having to worry about the HC position anymore?

Give me a Clemens-Ratliff-veteran QB competition, and I would be happy. It will be interesting to see how the staff views Clemens and Ratliff as far as QB of the future, since all their development would have gone on behind closed doors. Is the Ratliff hype legit or not? We’ll find out.

  224. avatar Igs says:

I’m a big time Giants fan also. Sorry if you don’t like it. I’ve never really understand the concept of living in a city and rooting against one of it’s teams. i live in NY. How could I hate the giants?

Now watching both of these franchises gives me a bit of a diffrent perspective. One returns to the superbowl about once every 10 years or so, one makes a playoff apearance about every 10 years and it’s usually a 1st round exit.

So when I crticize this franchise and this GM understand that it comes from a perspective of having a high level of expectations for both franchises. So watching Accorsi and Jerry Reese, definately makes me more critical of Tannenbaum and Bradway.

  225. avatar Drew says:

Lets see what Ryan wants to do and then we can address the QB issue. I unlike others am not throwing Clemens to the side just yet. He played badly under the same conditions Chad played badly in 2007. No Offensive line…..We’ll draft a QB but it wont be in the 1st round.

  226. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    In defense of KC:

Say your job is to enter files into a computer and when you get to work you have no key board (O line) and no mouse (Running game), but you still have all the files. Then everyone around gets mad at you because you aren’t doing your job. BS The 07 team was a joke and that wasn’t KCs fault.

  227. avatar Pdubbs says:

Just remember …..we DO NOT have Ed Reed, Ray Lewis or Terrell Suggs…. the good news is our defense could not get worse.

  228. avatar Drew says:

Most ridiculous comment I have ever seen lgs……I live in NY also and have never rooted for the Giants…..You cant be a fan of both….Here’s an example. Favre and the Jets crash down the stretch and your complaining in one hand and shaking your pom-poms in th eother for the Giants?

Ask Mets fans if they root for the Yankees…ask Cubs fans if they root for the WhiteSox.

Show me a fan of both and I will show you a big Giants fan that just happens to catch a Jet game. They would also be a A-Hole!!

  229. avatar Drew says:

My point exactly JustAGreenGuy. ….Clemes has not had a fair shake yet. Ratliff makes some throws against some 3rd stringers and our genius Jet fans want KC burned?? Hilarious

  230. avatar sadfan says:

    These guys need to go

    Barton
    law
    coleman
    mosley
    eric smith
    barrett
sean eliis ( or a pay cut)
    rhodes (pay cut)

  231. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

If some big passes of his last year weren’t dropped we probably would have been welcoming him this year. Schotts inability to play to his strengths wasn’t grand either.

  232. avatar Drew says:

Why would you want to cut Mosely? The guy has a high motor and makes some plays…He also doesnt make alot of money.

Rhodes will bounce back. Especially in Ryan’s defense.

I agree with the others. You can add Cole and B Franks to your list……and dont forget FAVRE

  233. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Ellis is too valuable to just cut.

  234. avatar Drew says:

Agreed if McCareins could catch a cold he would have beaten the Ravens and then who knows what happens….Still stunned Cotchery dropped that bomb against the Redskins…..

B-Schott is a mess. Not sure why he stays

  235. avatar Igs says:

Sorry Drew, I’ve watched every Jets and Giants fan since I’ve been a fan, which is about 15 years. And the Giants didn’t make very far so generally i didn’t have a good year on either end. And yes I watch both the Yankees and the Mets. To me, if you’re born and breed in a city, and you can root against that city’s team, you’re an idiot. Ny pride baby. I don’t let anyone knock my teams but me.

You got a problem with the Jets failures, don’t take it out on me. Take it on the front office. Their the ones to blame.

And you know what, the Giants are good becase their front office knows how to handle their business and the Jets front office doesn’t. That’s the bottom line.

    STOP HATING!

  236. avatar Igs says:

And when the jets crashed i was on this blog more than you slow mo.

  237. avatar GANGGREEN says:

KC could be the next MATT CASSELL for all we know…HE has had plenty of time in the system but needs the game time experience with a good offensive line, running game, and better wide receivers than he had in the past…THE TIME is now or never for CLEMENS…THE JETS need to give him the opportunity this year, rally behind him,and see how it all turns out….This front office needs to get wide receiver help this year via FREE AGENCY or the DRAFT for KELLEN to have any success this year…I have no faith in an of our receivers and I say it again I have NO faith in any of our current receivers…WE need an impact wideout or none at all…..

  238. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Cotchery’s drop against the Chiefs was bad too. KC escapes the rush and puts it right in his bread basket 30yds down field and he drops it with a chance for yac too.

  239. avatar john r says:

i am fine going with clemens this year, but for him to be successful he needs at least 1 deep threat to go with our core right now.
how do you fill that need

also can gholston play DE this year. if he can play DE, i think this d makes some real improvments.

  240. avatar JesusRevis says:

Hell yeah, I was so pumped when I heard this at work today.

Igs is a phony. go to a giant board buddy

  241. avatar Drew says:

Living in the city genius you can have a respect for the other team as I do …..but not root for them. Your argument is ignorant

My problem is hearing from a guy that bleeds Giant blue but then runs his mouth about the Jets.

Thats my point lgs I saw you all over the blog when we crashed but you also dreaming of Jacobs running your ass to the SB.

Gimme a break already…And save your silly name calling for Joe S. I my friend will just take you to school!!

  242. avatar Brian says:

I think Ryan is Ok but is he an upgrade over Mangini I am not sure. They can bring in the greatest defensive mind of all time and if they don’t have a cornerback to play opposite Revis the defense will stink again.

  243. avatar Drew says:

    Brian:

We just need a consistent pass rush….If we can get to the QB (as I hope Ryan will draw up) I can play opposite Revis…

  244. avatar Igs says:

Dag, drew ad revis, the hate is just spewing from your blood playa. I can’t blame you man. It’s been nothing but faliure all these years But to hell with yall. I’m not gonna plead my case to you. You go ahead and keep hating.

But you need to direct all that hate at your front office. I aint the reason this team can’t make it to the playoffs.

  245. avatar GANGGREEN says:

BRIAN have no fear REX will be rallying from day one at the draft to get a CB or SS so that he can play his scheme we need a good defensive back field to bring all the pressure from different areas of the field and you cant do that without an excellent back field…CB/SS/ then LB help via free agency or draft MIKE T and WOODY will support this decision to bolster there defense first to give RYAN the ability to have success his first year in and to PROVE that their choice for REX RYAN was the correct one…

  246. avatar eligoodrich says:

JAGG, Mr. T went to Umass and Tulaine. Not even close to ivy league. He majored in accounting and minored in sports management.please

  247. avatar JesusRevis says:

We can tell youre a giant fan, because you know nothing about the jets. And the fact that you claim you root for both teams just shows youre not a dedicated fan. Theres way too many people writing on this blog to begin with, if I never hear from Igs again it will be too soon.

  248. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Eligoodrich – another giant fan?

arent there any good giant blogs around to give you guys something else to do?

  249. avatar ridinmywave says:

Ok, a lot wanna doubt ratliff and say he played against 2nd and 3rd stringers…..ok he played WITH and threw to 2nd and 3rd stringers as well and had a 2nd and 3rd string o line as well…. if that’s your arguement.

And to the sanchez lovers…he performed well against a bunch of school kids and walk on players who probably don’t want to persue football as a career. His experience and mechanics are still in question (ask his peers and coach, lol). Right now he brings nothing to the team that our current qb’s don’t have.

Point being made is, I am very comfortable with an open competition between ratliff and clemens and may the best man win…ainge too.
Its crazy how a lot of you just speak with doubt, and the only remedy is to go out and siwtch things when you don’t even know what the guys already on the team are capable of. No developement and no chemistry….That’s pure IGNORANCE.

Sanchez, nor any FA retread qb from some other team assures us ANYTHING different from the qb’s that are on the team right now, NOTHING! I dare somebody to prove me wrong.

The only logic I can see in going out and getting another qb right now would be for wisdom and tutilage for the young guys, that’s it! They would be an insurance policy, but other than that, they would be sitting back and watching the show. Some of you need to stop being so impatient and antsy.

Teams without peyton manning at the helm still go out and do what they have to do to win the game. They learn to utilize and develope the weapons that are there, that’s what makes good coaches….and good teams.

  250. avatar Geoff says:

Somehow he will make our defense better. Offence wise just cut the playbook in half. We had some nice series, someone else should be calling those plays tho besides Schott, mix it up a bit.

    Steelers 34 Cardinals 10

  251. avatar oleosmirf says:

only concern i have about Ryan is that he did have 2 future HOF on his defense and a lot of other very good players so he might be overrated in that regard but hopefully Ryan can bring some players from Baltimore over here…

  252. avatar Igs says:

Save the hate for your front office!

I’m gonna keep saying what I’ve been saying, on the football tip:

More balance in offensive personnel moves, a better GM situation (a GM who’s actually played or coached football), better draft chemistry, etc, etc.

Draft a WR and a QB on day 1. Make those day 2 picks count. Get a 3rd RB that can eventually start. Yada, yada.

Change the tradition of losing on this team.

    Oleo,

I had that concern a bit myself. But after hearing some of the Balt players’ testimonies about Ryan, I’m sold. There will be many growing pains though. Dont expect a super bowl next year.

  254. avatar JesusRevis says:

Oleo – maybe those players look a lot better BECAUSE of Ryan. Ed Reed and Ray Lewis are obvious exceptions, but when I see Frank Walker starting at corner for the Ravens, and then hear people saying we dont have a corner opposite Revis, I find it hard to believe. If Frank Walker can start for the Ravens, I think the Jets can make it work with Lowery. Ryan clearly makes his players better. Im pretty sure Calvin Pace finished with similar sack numbers as Suggs, even though Pace was forced to drop back into coverage so often. Just you wait, once Ryan gets here all we’ll be hearing from him are the Ray Lewis-David Harris comparisons, Ed Reed-Kerry Rhodes, Calvin Pace-Terrell Suggs, etc. Ryan will make it work.

  255. avatar Igs says:

Kerry Rhodes will never be Ed Reed. And this is important when we talk about intangibles in the draft. Noone in the Jets secondary is a ball hawk – somebody that just has a way of constantly ending up around the ball – remember Donnie Abraham. This will have to addressed in the draft or FA. Rhodes is great but he fits another niche. I think he’s a better SS.

  256. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Olesmurf,

If you ask ANY player on that bmore defense, they will attribute their success to RYAN. Yes ed reed and ray lewis are great, but they all say its the scheming that made them look even better. Bart scott was developed and molded by ryan, the guy wasn’t even drafted for christ sake, suggs just came into his own under good tutilage as well. Other than that I don’t see any greatness on that defense. They played without mcallister all year, and rolle was spotty. That defense was riddled with injuries, but still looked good throught the year, is that enough?

And why do some of you act like we have a minor leagues
cast of a defense?? Probably the best tackle and corner in the league play for US! Pace is good, we one of the best safties in the league, ellis aint too shabby either.

Outside of lewis, reed and suggs, the ravens don’t have anything special my freind.

  257. avatar JesusRevis says:

I never said Kerry Rhodes will be Ed Reed. I simply made the point that Ryan will use Rhodes the way he used Reed. And I dont know where youre going with your donnie abraham ball-hawk comments, he only had 7 ints in 3 seasons with the jets. and darrelle revis is the best corner the jets have ever had. And what makes you think you HAVE to have a ball hawk in your secondary to be good? im pretty sure your giants dont have any ball hawks on there team, do they?

  258. avatar Drew says:

Ryan will get us to the QB….which makes opposite Revis less of a priority. Look at how B Scott, F Washington, Lehnord etc preformed under Ryan the last 2-3 years. Lewis and Reed are awesome but I am not going to take credit away from Ryan because those guys are great.

Pace, Harris, Jenkins, Rhodes and hopefully Gholsten will thrive under this guy

lgs..Your points would make alot more sense if you werent a Giants fan

  259. avatar JesusRevis says:

ridinmywave, you beat me to the punch. i agree with everything you just said.

If you ask me the jets have one of the most talented defenses in the NFL. Now its time to get a coach who can utilize that talent.

  260. avatar Drew says:

D Abraham a ball-hawk?? For the Jets?? This guy was not a good coner for us. You must be talking about the Tampa Bay D Abraham genius

His best year was 4 INTS for us bud

Do yourself a favor lgs…Do some homework before you name drop to make your points.

And have seen a guy who wears #24 for us?? He is alot better than the 2 guys roaming the corner for your G-men

  261. avatar Igs says:

Save your hate for your front office:

Yes, every championship team has atleast one ball hawk. Troy palamlhu anyone? Not nessicarily numbers when you talk about donnie abraham, but when you add up fumble recoveries, knockdowns, and ints, etc, it looks nice.

Kerry Rhodes just doesn’t have Ed Reed’s speed and range. You’d have to draft or bring in someone with reed’s skillset and move Rhodes to SS. That’s all I’m saying. Taylor Mays anyone?

  262. avatar Igs says:

Save the hate for your front office:

It’s easy to draft a good corner. They work on an island. i’d like to see MR. T put together a team.

  263. avatar Drew says:

Lets go look for a HOF safety in the draft….Great thought lgs….You should be a GM in this league.

I think you should send that post to every GM in the NFL

  264. avatar Igs says:

Save the hate for your front office:

Drew you can always feel free to meet me and face to face and further discuss your angst in 40 years of failure. I’d straighten you out real good since you have so much to say.

  265. avatar ridinmywave says:

Lol, I’m not gonna lie LGS…you shot yourself in the foot with that one(abraham), and prior to this year, kerry has shown ball hawking capabilities, but ball hawking can only be prevelant in an aggresive defense style which the jets went away from this year…so what do you expect?
Its kind of hard to read the qb when he has ALL day to throw it…you can only cover so much of the field when he releases it…and obviously if he has time to see where you(kerry) are..he’s not gonna throw it in your direction…. but force the issue on elam’s side of the field, (which so many qbs have done this year) lol.

  266. avatar Fred says:

Taylor Mays isnt going to the NFL this year Igs

  267. avatar Drew says:

Only 30 yrs old so dont have 40 years of pain like some other long suffering Jet fans….

But more than happy to “explain” how things are done…..typical blogger tough guy.

Do yourself a favor lgs….keep make believing your a badass and I let you keep yout teeth.

  268. avatar Rharnick says:

How about the dantonio’s or the Brown’s in basketball. I think brothers can work together.

  269. avatar JesusRevis says:

Wow Igs, you are embarassing yourself.

  270. avatar Igs says:

like i said, when you look at ed reed, it’s not just his interception #s. He’s always around the ball. Fumble recoveries, forcing fumbles, throwing blocks, just causing general calamnity wherever the ball is. You don’t like Donie Abraham comparison (althoguh he was feared and not often thrown at) let’s try Palimalu, Gibril Wilson, you know what i’m talking about.

Didn’t know Mays stayed this year. Good catch.

  271. avatar kc. says:

With Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan taking over as the successor to Eric Mangini, any Jets fan who suffered through the nightmare finish of 2008 (or any other of the myriad nightmare finishes of the last four decades) surely was closely watching how Baltimore’s defense played against the Steelers.

After all, the man who tells Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs and Ed Reed where to go will be doing the same with Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace and Kerry Rhodes.
Today is all about the Jets.

The issue now, of course, is whether Ryan can do what few others have done for the woebegone franchise. The Jets’ tortured history is working against him, regardless of the promise he brings with his innovative defensive schemes.

He does run the 3-4 defense, which dovetails nicely with the personnel brought in during the Mangini era. But it’s not as if he’s inheriting the Ravens’ personnel. It’s one thing to put some of the best defensive players in the game into the right position; it’s another to piece together an underachieving defense that was just as culpable as Brett Favre’s sputtering offense in the Jets’ late-season collapse.

You’re talking about going from a defense with surefire Hall of Famers in Lewis and Reed to one that is lucky to get one or two players voted to the Pro Bowl in any given year.

Even Ryan says coaching Lewis makes his job that much easier. “Trust me, it’s a heck of a lot more about Ray than it is about me,” Ryan said. “I can promise you that. He’s such a student of the game. The practices, the meeting times that we have, that’s only part of it. If you really want to be great, you’ll study the tapes and all that yourself. Ray probably puts in as many hours as most coaches do.”

Ryan won’t have another guy like him in the Jets’ locker room. Not even close. And that’s where the real measure of Ryan’s coaching will come in. When you don’t have the horses, you have to do it the hard way — with painstaking attention to detail that you hope will overcome the physical deficiencies in terms of pure talent.
Ryan does have the kind of relationship with his players that gives you some reason to believe he has the right stuff to handle things well with a new team. He believes in them and they believe in him. Even with great players on your team, they have to win your trust, and Ryan has earned it. Throw in a good measure of confidence that borders on cockiness (remember, his father is Buddy Ryan, so some of it rubbed off), and he is most definitely a players’ coach.

“For the most part with our guys [in Baltimore], we’re all on the same page,” he said. “They know when they change a call that, No. 1, it better work, and then I’ll say, ‘Give me the credit for it.’ But realistically, it’s a partnership that we’ve had for a long time now.

“When we put a game plan together, we explain our calls and explain why we are doing them. Our guys pick up on why we are making those calls and what they can expect as well.”

It’s easy to pick the hot coordinator in any year, which is what most teams do when they’re looking for a new head coach. The Jets are doing it this year. The trick is to find the guy with the right mix of teacher, leader and survivor. Ryan may or may not have the right stuff; remember, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome passed over Ryan last year before hiring John Harbaugh, a former special-teams coach with the Eagles.

But Harbaugh had the “it” factor and navigated his way through the uncertain quarterback situation that eventually put rookie Joe Flacco in the starting role right away. Will Ryan have the same good fortune with the Jets? They certainly hope so, which is why they’ve settled on him.

As Jets fans know all too painfully, there are no guarantees.

    Best of luck, Rex.

Not mostly really just the ints but prior to this year(when utilized properly) kerry used to reek havoc when he was in the box, only ones who looked better was really troy, but reed did more damage in the secondary than compared to when he played the box. Ed has the range and speed like you said…but he can get thrown around sometimes

The search rose to a new level Sunday night after the Ravens lost to the Steelers, 23-14, in the AFC Championship Game at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field. Tannenbaum was in attendance and began negotiations with Ryan in the hours after the game. The talks continued this morning before the Jets contingent flew back to Newark Liberty Airport and resumed negotiations this afternoon at the team’s new training complex in Florham Park, N.J.

“During our search, we were looking for a great football mind and a passionate leader,” Tannenbaum said. “Rex is a coach with an established track record who is universally respected by players and coaches for his skills as a communicator and his creativity.”

  283. avatar Cody says:

3- Or start a QB we already have

I can’t believe you guys have sunk to making physical threats to one another.

  286. avatar ridinmywave says:

    K.c

That was a really long post, good one, but a couple of bones to pick tho…..its not that serious from the way your prasing the ravens defense and clowning the jets. You know the meltdown on defense was merely the playcalling and aggresiveness.Pace and harris can’t rush the qb on their own tuition, if their told to drop back, they have to drop back. Their not supposed to rely on jenkins to be at the quarterback or rusher every snap, you have to gameplan outside of relying on certain players to be superman all the time. And now outside of ray lewis and ed reed you can’t tell me of any other established threats on that team. Mc callister has benefitted from that aggresive style of D while Suggs and scott(wasn’t even drafted) are a product of ryan

And as far as rex ryan praising lewis, the guys on that team return it and have said “his defensive scheming makes us look better than what we really are” while calling him the mad scientist. It takes more than two people to establish your self as a top defense year after year. Ryan has made numerous second and third stringers look good these past couple of years ECSPECIALLY this season, that ravens secondary was ravished with injuries.

  287. avatar ramble914 says:

    Bassett/ Bent

How are you letting this happen?

I would like to apologize for letting lgs getting me fired up. I just dont understand why he went down the path of challenging people because I disagreed with him.

  289. avatar Drew says:

Why do think Favre will be back now? I was thinking the total opposite. I think the Ryan hiring keeps favre away. Which is great in my eyes

  290. avatar Cody says:

do you guys think the jets will offer cassell a contract? because i cant imagine the patriots spending millions on a backup!

  291. avatar kc. says:

for the record drew…i DO NOT want FAVRE back.
I believe KELLEN will be our next quarterback,as he SHOULD. If Rattliff wins the job in mini camp/preseason…then SO BE IT! We NEED a TALL,FAST wide receiver with HANDS!!

  292. avatar Drew says:

Cody….I think the Patriots might trade him but there is no way that they will trade him to us….Plus I dont think many fans think he is the real deal.

He showed some moxie but I think he was a product of a great coaching staff.

  293. avatar swizzle81 says:

I agree Drew, I hope and think Favre will not be back next year, hopefully he will ask to be released/retire and the Jets will save 13 mil. Let KC and Ratty battle it out, they certainly cannot do worse than 22 int’s next year. The Jets should draft a QB next year if things do not pan out with Ratty or KC,. This year’s draft they need too much help at other key positions, WR, CB, Safety, ILB, not necessarily in that order.

  294. avatar Joe S. says:

NO Cassell! and NO more RETRED QB’s!

The Jets will develop their own guy.

Agreed KC. I was just suprised your feeliong was he would come back now.

I dont thnk there is a big fast WR in the draft but would love to have one opposite Cotchery.

Big year for #81 for us this year might help

  296. avatar swizzle81 says:

The Patriots plan on using the franchise tag on Cassel, according to several reports. So he is out of the picture.

  297. avatar swizzle81 says:

How about packaging Coles and a high draft pick (2nd and a 5th) for Boldin? Thats of course if Arizona is interesting in trading him.

  298. avatar Drew says:

    Swizzle81:

I made this point ealrier today but did you see the stunt Boldin pulled on the sidelines yesterday. This guy ‘s team is about to score on the most important drive in the teams history and he is yelling at the OC about getting the ball?? He also left the stadium without celebrating with is team because he didnt get enough balls thrown he way…I want no part of him

How about Devery Henderson? Big, fast just needs the ball thrown his way and he is much cheaper

  299. avatar swizzle81 says:

Yup, I saw that whole episode with Boldin, I think he is just frustrated and needs a change of scenery and there was no reason for him not to be on the field for the 4th quarter. Apparently he doesnt get along with Whisenhunt and was seeking a contract extension in the off season and was pretty much told to pound sand.

  300. avatar Drew says:

He might be frustrated but it was a big part of the game….lol

I think he is a little overrated. Isnt he just a little bigger version of Cotchery?

I think we need more speed and he is going to cost a ton

  301. avatar kc. says:

is TJ Housmanzadeh a FREE AGENT? THAT is the TYPE of reciever we NEED!

  302. avatar Drew says:

    kc….

He is but he will want HUGE money. I dont think we can afford a guy like that.

  303. avatar ridinmywave says:

yeah, to be honest i wasnt too impressed with boldin even before the whole sideline arguement. he has decent hands (not great) and is not a “go up and get it” type guy….neither is he a deep threat(not great speed)….but he does run routes well and is best with the YAC. he is like the brandon jacobs of WRs. so basically, he is a good possesion reciever and benfitted from an offense that was pass first, run second. he complimented fitzgerald nicely, but i dont hink he answers any needs for a deep fast threat, somthing we dont have. but he does remind me alot of cotchery a good second reciever(usually possesion recievers)….just like antonio bryant and t.j houshmenzada. I see alot of people calling for their names via FA, but they are all big and sizeable possesion recievrs, they all have average speed with little deep threat ability.

honestly i would rather a chad johnson or plaxico(on good behavior)…jets really missed out on bernard berrian last off season…what a shame

NEW YORK (AP)—Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan was hired as the coach of the New York Jets on Monday, a day after the Ravens lost in the AFC championship.

The 46-year-old Ryan replaces the fired Eric Mangini, taking over a team that started last season 8-3 but missed the playoffs with quarterback Brett Favre after losing four of its last five games.

The Jets announced the hiring, but released no other details. The contract is for four years, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity earlier Monday because the deal had not been announced.

Ryan, the son of former NFL coach Buddy Ryan, will be formally introduced at a news conference Wednesday at the Jets’ facility in Florham Park, N.J.

“It’s been a dream of mine to become a head coach in the NFL,” Ryan said in a statement. “Coming here to the New York Jets, where my father once coached and was part of the Super Bowl III staff, is fantastic. I look around at the facilities and the people they have in place and see a first-class organization. I’m just proud to be part of it.”

The deal was finalized Monday afternoon after Jets owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum flew to Baltimore in the morning to iron out the details, team spokesman Bruce Speight said.

“We got the right man for the job,” Johnson said in a statement.

The Ravens’ defensive coordinator the last four seasons is the twin brother of Cleveland defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. His Baltimore defense helped the Ravens to the AFC championship game and has been ranked in the top six in total yardage allowed the last four seasons, including second overall this season while leading the NFL with 34 takeaways.

“I think it’s a gain for them and a loss for us, but it’s well-deserved,” Ravens linebacker Bart Scott said. “It was a long time coming.”

This will be the first head coaching job for Ryan, who is said to be well liked among his players because of his straightforward, no-nonsense style.

“I’m very much looking forward to meeting coach Ryan,” wide receiver Chansi Stuckey told The Associated Press in an e-mail. “His reputation precedes him by the success that Baltimore has had, and I’m very excited to get started.”

It became apparent Ryan was at the top of the Jets’ list of candidates when several other teams filled their coaching vacancies and New York’s remained open. The Jets needed Baltimore’s season to end—which happened Sunday with a 23-14 loss at Pittsburgh—before offering him the job.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Rex has the expertise and instincts to build on the foundation that we have in place and take this franchise to the ranks of the NFL’s elite,” Johnson said.

Ryan also interviewed for the St. Louis Rams job that went to Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

The Jets interviewed at least five other candidates, including offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, assistant head coach/offensive line coach Bill Callahan, Arizona assistant head coach/offensive line coach Russ Grimm, Indianapolis defensive coordinator Ron Meeks and fired Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski.

Whether Ryan will have Favre on his roster this season is unclear. The 39-year-old quarterback recently said he would take several weeks before deciding whether to return.

Nicknamed “The Mad Scientist” for his aggressive and unpredictable game plans, Ryan prefers to run a 3-4 defensive scheme, which the Jets already have in place. New York spent big money last offseason acquiring players that excel in the 3-4, including nose tackle Kris Jenkins and linebacker Calvin Pace.

Ryan inherits a defense that had an impressive start with 29 sacks in its first eight games but just 12 in the last half of the season. The secondary also might need a makeover, ranking 29th overall against the pass despite Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis and playmaking safety Kerry Rhodes.

Ryan, who was with the Ravens for 10 seasons, was fired when the entire staff was let go after the 2007 season. Ryan interviewed for the job that went to John Harbaugh, who rehired Ryan.

    Juaquin Iglesias SR 6-1/201/
    Jeremy Maclin SO 6-1/200/
    Darrius Heyward-Bey JR 6-2/206/

  306. avatar ridinmywave says:

tj has great hands……but is kinda slow and not a deep threat, ive seen him win a couple jump balls but he cant run with the ball, typical possesion reiever.

i see its a pattern in the nfl in which the 1st wr is usually the fast, deep threat and then the 2nd wr is usually a the sure handed possesion reciever in which boldin and tj both are.

  307. avatar ridinmywave says:

jeremy maclin has some weels……..now THATS a deep threat, lol

  308. avatar Cody says:

i wonder if chad johnson (Ocho- CInco) lol is going to leave the bengals if so where will he go.

who would you rather have Chad or TJ

  309. avatar ridinmywave says:

honestly……chad, he’s not a bad guy nor a cancer, he’s just a clown who loves attention. When thing sare going goo, he’;s one of the most entrtaining people to watch and listen to. bengals suck and he doesnt like to lose as noone in that locker room is happy, but ive never heard of him being a problem in the locker room and he had a bit of humble pie last off season, seems to be a chnged man ever since if you ask me, lol

  310. avatar swizzle81 says:

89 catches for 1,038 yards and 11 touchdowns, and missed 4 games this year due to injury, those were Boldin’s stats this year. I think he is more than just a possession receiver, he can run after the catch and is great in the red zone. TJ is a possession receiver and I would stay as far away as possible from Ocho Cinco.

  311. avatar ridinmywave says:

he IS a possesion reciever, you basically reiterated what i said in his best attributes, which primarily defines a possesion reciever. And im not saying he’s overrated or anything but he benefitted from a pass heavy offense ….as did warner…..fitzgerald…and breaston. just ask edgarin james, lol

  312. avatar ridinmywave says:

boldin is a good reciever…but good at what he does, best..YAC. but those things dont fall under speed and deep threat ability which i see alot of people calling for this offseason.

  313. avatar Cody says:

ok then who do you think is more likely for the jets to get

    1-TJ
    2-Ocho-Cinco
    3-Boldin

(by they way i heard coles might go to miami to play with Chad again)

  314. avatar ridinmywave says:

i understand the man didnt have a good year and who knows…maybe he’s over the hill…..but i wouldnt go as far to say i would “stay far away from him”
everybody knows he’s a clown and flamboiant but hasnt been a degrading person and has behaved himself throught out this rough season and still keeping faith in his teammates abilities….you think t.o or plax could have done that? he’s not a cancer and the only fines he has ever gotten were due to touchdopwn celebrations (who doesnt get fined now)…if chad is still as dangerous as he has been in the past, i dont see why not, it would be ignorant to not want that, but the question remains……is he still that good?

  315. avatar ridinmywave says:

cody…honestly theres probably a chance none. theres other options out there that are more viable to the team, but we’ll see what the coaches and FO think when the time comes.

  316. avatar Cody says:

i think if you get good players around him he will be good. and if we get a good WR it will be easier for KC or ratliff to start

all those guys want big money, all are good, but it still remains what the team is willing to spend and on what type of reciever…..i saw somebody bring up devry henderson’s name…..that guy is fast as hell and he has made some nice strides this past season, but i dont know about him being a premier reciever, they made one out of bernard berrian in minnesota so we’ll see.
