How Will Things Play Out?

So with the news that the Jets have offered Rex Ryan their head coaching position and that he’s expected to take it, let’s take a quick look at how things might happen from here.

Offensive Coordinator: Stories have been leaked that Schottenheimer made a power play to the press to posture for the job of Head Coach, but it was to no avail. Schottenheimer’s camp has floated that he is willing to stay in New York, ironically after realizing that there wasn’t anything better out there for him. Ryan might yet meet with Schott and they come to some agreement on staying or going. Common sense would indicate that Ryan should get the chance to sign off on Schott, but rumors last week were otherwise, that Schottenheimer was in the package for the new head coach, take it or leave it. It’s potentially one of the reasons that Woody liked Ryan more than Spags. It remains to be seen whether in fact Ryan and Schottenheimer can see eye to eye and whether or not Schottenheimer is asked to stay.

Bill Callahan is an obvious internal choice of someone who could run the team’s offense. Callahan ran the Oakland offense before Jon Gruden’s departure to Tampa. Callahan’s team had one of the worst offenses in his first year, but in his second, the group progressed to one of the league’s best, where it stayed for a number of years.

Hue Jackson, the Ravens’ QB coach is another name thrown around, but there are unsubstantiated reports that Jackson has taken a job with the Bengals already.

Defensive Coordinator: Adios, Bob Sutton! No one’s sure what will happen here. Will Ryan call the defensive plays and not need a DC? Will he hire someone who he trusts implicitly and runs his system? The best guess for who would be the new Defensive Coordinator is Mike Pettine from Baltimore, who Ryan has called his “right hand man.” Internally from the Jets, the best option might be Jim Hermann, the team’s linebackers coach. Look to see if the Jets name outside and inside linbacker coaches this offseason … mirroring the Ravens method.

Special Teams: Rex Ryan would be crazy to let Mike Westhoff go. Westy and company has consistently put out a top-third unit for the Jets over the years.

Favre: It’s hard to know whether Ryan’s hiring will have any effect whatsoever on Favre’s decision, which seems likely to be made in a vacuum, much like the rest of Favre’s decisions whether on or off the field. When we last heard from #4, he sounded like a beaten man, but $13 million and those competitive juices along with a new coach who he might get along better with might make him want to try it one more time. A new coach might be less willing to put up with Favre’s absence from offseason conditioning programs, so we’ll just have to see how this plays out. Even Brett Favre doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Team Philosophy: This is totally fluff and I know it until we see it in action. All I have to go off of is the evidence from his players and from his own mouth. It’s hard to say how things will change exactly, but expect Ryan to allow his players to be themselves a little more. Ryan most likely didn’t temper Ray Lewis or tell him to tone his act down or face team sanctioned fines. Ryan seems to get that football is full of visceral emotions and seems to know when to use those to his advantage and when to lay off. His players all speak very highly of him and his coaching style, and are bittersweet about his leaving. Look for a team that is less afraid of what they say, but more concerned about playing with purpose and not letting their teammates down.

gholston.jpgRoster: As it stands right now, the Jets look to be $7 million over the projected cap, so don’t expect a lot of big name moves this offseason. Unless Favre walks away or the Jets are willing to cut him, and they can trade or cut some other larger cap numbers, there’s just no room to allow for a number of Ravens players migrate to New York. The team might look to pick up one or two defensive players with potential to start, but this team is largely frozen in terms of personnel.

It might be a long shot, but can the hiring of Rex Ryan help get Vernon Gholston over the bump that was his rookie year? Ryan is long known as a coach who schemes to his players abilities, and is willing to work with those players to do more. Gholston hasn’t shown much, but if anyone has the ability to squeeze ability out of the player, it just might be Ryan.

Exactly Basset VG needs to play and Rex should be the man to do it.

Its amazing to think how much VG influenced the firing of Mangini. It may be more than any of us think. The fact that Woody paid this kid 50+ mill or whatever it was and that he didnt see the field definatly ticked off WJ, as it would anyone. This kid needs to start for us and we need to get rid of BT.

Let Ryan assemble his own coordinators and get the look that he wants. We wanted to start from scratch so let’s start from scratch- let’s not half bake this overhaul. If Schott stays (or worse, Sutton), then it’s pretty much the writing on the wall for the next Ryan era in NY. Game planning and play design was dreadfully inappropriate during the latter half of ’08 as well as ’07; that’s a responsibility that falls in the coordinators hands.
Also, if either coord stays, it’s evidence that Tannenbaum and Johnson forced Schott and Sutton on Mangini because they were unwilling to buy out their respective contracts.
Hopefully Ryan can convince Jackson that Cincy is a much more backward and stale franchise than our own (sometimes people forget how bad something is) and bring him here. Jackson did a great job coaching WRs Ocho-Cinco and Houshmanzadeh during his time in Cincy and helped Flacco develop into one of the best young QBs in the league. Here’s the guy who has experience coaching every offensive specialty position. Imagine him working with Stuckey, Clowney, Keller, Henry and Ratliff.

You really don’t know anything about what Brett favre is thinking, so why include the slam. YOU are operating in a vacume about Brett Favre’s decision, HE is not.

  4. avatar Chase says:

Not that it would happen, but… is it even possible TO cut Favre? Wouldn’t we need to put in place some safeguards to help prevent him from going to Minnesota and costing us a boatload of 1st round picks?

  5. avatar klecko says:

i find this coaching move disturbing, they should have promoted sutton.Anyone can clearly see he was held back by mangini.

  6. avatar McSec332 says:

Hopefully they let Ryan pick his own assistants. Gotta trust your people and as far as I know he doesn’t know a think about Schotty.

What do you guys think of trading a 2nd round pick for Anquan Boldin. Dude is a beast, is signed for another three years and will likely be dealt from the desert because of his constant griping.

Wouldn’t think of a whiny player like this being a possibility with Mangini but now it’s a whole new ballgame… and we’ll need someone to replace Coles in more ways than one

  7. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Chase- We just can’t trade him to an NFC north team.

  8. avatar Bassett says:

Chase, no stipulations or poison pills if the Jets do cut favre. It’s more PR than anything. If the Jets don’t want his $13 mill on the books, the best way to insure it is to cut him, as he proved last year, he could just not sign his retirement papers or go for reinstatement and throw the salary cap into chaos.

he can go back to the Pack and get a nice big hug from iowachick.

    Bassett- Haha

Ryan will turn VG into an animal…. hopefully… I believe he will.. I also want to see Sutton fired ASAP… Our D should without a doubt be in the top 5 next year… If they Keep shotty I have no problem with it but it should be witht the thining that if he doesnt produce a top 10 offense hes gone… with or without Brett Favre(hopefully without)… As far as personel goes for O i hope the rid themselfs of Favre, Coles, and MAYBE even Cocth because we have alot of number 2 recivers behind Cotchery and cap space witch could be used on a tall serious reciver like Ocho Cinco, or some one with a similar skill set and body type… For D all i want to see is us drop BT and VG become the monster he is supposed to be…

  11. avatar Ken says:

Klecko please confirm you were kidding about Sutton!

  12. avatar Ken says:

Sutton Held back??? its more as if he was locked out of the game. he was on a different planet than the rest of the Team. i know you were kidding. right?

  13. avatar Lou says:

it’s obvious the guy was being sarcastic.
    hint 1, his name
hint 2, everyone knows sutton sucks

  14. avatar gh says:

Sutton def needs to go and so does Schott. Favre stay retired. . . . . .again. Def need a tall wide receiver. Ratliff ’09!!

  15. avatar Lou says:

actually, scratch the name hint..lol.. was thinking of something else. but it was still sarcasim.

  16. avatar seanmac31 says:

That was lovely, klecko. To those who were asking, all klecko was doing was parodying your Gholston arguments. Gholston had plenty of chances to show he could play, and he did absolutely nothing. He did nothing in preseason and he did nothing in the regular season, either standing up or rushing from a three-point stance. It’s hardly Mangini’s fault that he sat a player who did nothing to earn playing time.

(And for those of us who watched Gholston spend much of his career at Ohio State doing nothing…let’s just say this year wasn’t a big surprise.)

  17. avatar brian311 says:

one small thing – if favre does retire, we get a 7th round pick from GB

  18. avatar Steve in China says:

Klecko – Great post! I love the sarcasm.

Just replace Sutton with Schottenheimer and you’ll see the beauty of his post. Some people (probably his agent) keep suggesting that Schotty is really a talent, and that he was just “held back” by Mangini. Then why not say the same for Sutton? Haha.

    Again, great post.

I’m SO glad that we hired Ryan! It was definitely the right move. Now, let Ryan assemble the rest of the coaching staff as he best sees fit.

If Schotty’s ego is so damaged by being passed over for head coach, then he should try to get a job on another team. (If he can.) Bye, Schotty! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Go Jets! Long live the Rex!
