Quote Machine off to a Rip Roaring Start
Some quotes from Rex’s presser this morning. He had more interesting soundbites in the first two minutes than Mangini did in three years. He’s delivered on his quotes in Baltimore. Here’s to hoping he can do the same thing here in New York … plenty new quotes added after the jump.
On coaching the Jets …
“I can’t tell you how excited i am to lead this organization … I plan on being here a long time.”
Thanking his wife …
“There’s only two kind of coaches wives … [we've been together for] 22 years … their’s Ex ones and Great ones … and i know what you are thinking … man did you outkick your coverage … and you’re right … [I guess I'm] a great recruiter.”
On his staff …
“What can you expect from a team that has myself as a leader? Number one, I am going to surround myself with the best people I can find … [other subordinate coaches] are gonna work with me, not for me. There’s a lot of talented guys here already in place … Mike Westhoff … Bill Callahan”
(no mention of Schottenheimer)
On his first new hire …
“We just hired Mike Pettine, who was with me in Baltimore … as our defensive coordinator … we don’t want to pump him up too fast … but he’s a star in this league.”
On his teaching method …
You’ve heard of KISS philosophy (keep it simple stupid) but we’re going to have a KILL philosophy .. keep it likeable and learnable. We’re going to make mistakes, but we’re going to make them full speed. We’re going to be an attack team, on both sides of the ball and special teams.
Why New York …
I was blown away When they [Johson, Tannenbaum, Cohen] came down to meet me, I knew this was where I wanted to be. I know the pressures … and expectations … that come with this … but coming off a nine win season .. we can win immediately.
On Favre …
I think Brett Favre is a great player … I got whiplash watching him go up and down against us … I know the kind of talent he has … I would guess anyone would want him as their quarterback … everything will be looked at … sometimes you don’t have your best game for whatever reason … I know the respect that I have for Favre is great.
Timeframe on Favre …
Quite honestly I can’t tell you that … I’ll talk to four of five players each day … so when I get to “F” [we'll talk.]
On why he’s qualified …
It gets done at all levels … you’ve got the right guy.
On Brian Schottenheimer …
I’m going to be meeting with Brian soon. He’s got a great reputation … I want to sit down and visit with him. If anybody knows what Brian’s going through … it’s me. I know the sting of not getting a job … but I am better prepared because of it … when I got over myself, I realized it was a great opportunity.
Brian’s an outstanding coach … he’s here already … I’d be doing myself a disservice if I don’t [talk to him.] He’s one of the top coordinators in football … I’ll give him this opportunity to say no or yes.
On his style of defense …
“Read and react is for somebody else. We’re going to attack … you’re going to see the fur fly. We’ve got some unique guys … the big guy inside Kris Jenkins, some great OLBs … a ballhawk free safety and the best corner in football.
On Vernon Gholston …
This wasn’t a guy who wasn’t productive in college … he was very productive … you see some things in his game and I say “I would like to coach this young man” … because I don’t think he’s even scratched the surface … [there's going to be a committment from him] but that being said he’s going to have to humble himself …
Ryan then spoke about Terrell Suggs and his affirmation of him after he was already labelled internally as a rookie as a bust. Ryan noted how he helped make him into the player he is.
On the fans …
I have high expectations of our fans … I want to challenge our fans … I think our fans are part of our defense in particular … I know the jet fans … this is a great marriage … the style of defense that we’re going to play with our fans … woo! It’s gonna be rough!
On interactions with his players and his team defense meetings …
I will honestly be able to tell you that our corner will be able to tell you what Kris Jenkins will be doing on each and every snap … [conversely] Kris Jenkins will be able to tell you where Kerry Rhodes is … it’s all eleven doing things together and doing it in an aggressive fashion … it’s going to be accountability to each other … not wanted to let each other down.
On personnel & coaching decisions …
I can’t tell you exactly. Personnel? Mike will have the final say. We want to have a joint effort … coaching and the scouting department … we’ll formulate our plan on what players we want and Mike will go get him … Mike has final say.
On coaching, there’s not been one time, that there’s been any pressure to hire a certain coach. There just happens to be great coaches on this staff that I want to keep.
On talking to his father (famed Coach Buddy Ryan who was an assistant on the SBIII team) about his new job …
He said “that’s my team … don’t mess it up!”
Message to the league…
The Jets are coming …
You take a swip at one of ours, we’ll take a swipe at two of yours.

I think I just had a wet dream listening to this guy. This the kind of guy you need to lead men. Completely fired up!!!!
Don’t you LOVE what Rex had to say????
Attack… Attack…. Attack…
A SHUT DOWN DEFENSE is on the way Jet Fans!!!!
I expect than you’s from all!
Favre is OVER ad DONE with! A young QB wil be developed!
Wow.
What a breath of fresh air.
Wants to make the Jets into an ELITE, championship team.
Lead us to the promised land, Rex. You’re impressive already.
so does this mean sutton is donezo?
It seems pretty clear replacing Mangini with Ryan was a great move by Tannenbaum. Interesting he didn’t mention Schottenheimer. It would be great if he names Callhan OC.
haha now i find it really hard to believe that there wasnt a bounty out for hines ward this guy is so aggressive and he said basically if you take out one of our guys were going to take out two of yours which i think sounds like a bounty!!! which is fine with me hit to hurt
Bassett, keep the quotes coming. I’m sure I’m not the only one unable to watch or listen to this right now.
Sutton is gone and I’m excited. Yay!
“The Jets are coming with everything we got and we think it’s more than you can handle.” Rex Ryan.
Damn I cannot wait for next season already, not to jump to any conclusions, but it sounds good so far, love his mentality and I can only imagine it will rub off on the players.
FIRED UP!
omg, were gonna kick some ass!!
“I am going to surround myself with the best people I can find . . . [w]e just hired Mike Pettine.” Really?!?! He is the best you can find? Someone with no DC experience. So now we have a green HC and a green DC. Well at least we didn’t just fire a coach, in part, because he was too inexperienced.
“You take a swipe at one of ours…. we WILL take a swipe at 2 of yours”
I love it!
As I said in the other thread, after listening to Ryan, I have to say I really like what I’m hearing — especially about the defense. Hopefully that will carry over to the other side of the ball, too.
I also like the way he addressed the fans immediately — calling them out and calling on them to be part of it. Nice touch!
I’m starting to feel optimistic again, which as Jets fans we know is dangerous.
BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER,
Last time I checked the Ravens did a pretty good job with there defense, especially there LB Corps, plus this guy has been an assistant for several years, who else would you recommend then for a DC?
R in CT – Fight it! Fight the urge!
But honestly, I love Ryan’s mindset. Hopefully it wil be contagious to the rest of the team in ‘09.
“Hey NFL the Jets are comming”
I Love It!
BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER,
Shut up man, who should they have gotten? Stop being so pessimistic and appreciate that weve got the next great coach
im loving it.
he spoke about offensive and defensive balance
He is not a good looking man, but he just may have outkicked my coverage. I’m available Rex
BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER….
Just looking to rain on the parade bud? Ryan is bringing the guy who learned under him for the last 5 years. Thats how it works in this league.
i liked when he called revis the best cb in football let hope he can really help vernon
great press conference.
lol at BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER trying to find the one quote to pick on. did you want romeo cronnel as DC? who the hell did you want?!
I wish I was close to Astoria Queens so I could smack these to sarcastic idiots on WFAN in the neck. I cant tell you how much I hate Joe Beningo and ridiculous theories
I like him already!
I like the D coordinator pick. He probably was high on the Ravens list as Ryan’s replacement and he knows Ryan’s system. I think it was a good idea.
aka drew
I agree 100 percent. Beningo is a moron
Impressive…….can’t wait for the season to start! Comment to BLAMESCHOTTENHEIMER We all want Ryan to bring in his style of defense, who would be better than a coach from his system? I welcome the move.
If Schott is going to stay, he will have to be aggressive. It will be interesting to find out , what kind of Offensive Coordinator he really is… Okay Schott no excuses
Holy crap…I’m walking a little taller. I’m with you Rex
Can’t wait for the draft and free agency.
Not to give Schott a free pas, but I also think that he should have another year. I think if he gets his fundamentals down, he could be a revelation because he’s smart. Ironically, if he does really well, then someone will swoop in and steal him, then we’ll be starting over on offense again.
So they def. would have to have an OC in training.
With Ryan as the coach now i can see him drafting defense in the first round to add another corner along with the best corner in football
My point is that he will be in over his head without an experienced staff for him to lean-on. Giving the new DCs inexperience, this puts more pressure on Ryan. Weren’t some of the criticism against Mangini that he was over-his-head and did not have an experienced staff to rely on?
He still has Callahan. Who has done it all in this league.
And Westhoff.
Plus he calls Pettine his right hand man so im pretty sure that he knows the defense that he runs pretty well so if he had to get away from the defense for a little pettine will be fine on his own
Nice, nice words. But Ryan doesn’t win me over until he kicks Favre to the curb.
Then I will get fired up for next season.
We’re going to be an attack team “KILL” “KILL” “KILL”!!
Wow I’m stoked, (time to adjust my pants) this guy just made my day!!!!
I even love how he doesn’t consider Shotty a talented guy like Mike Westhoff, and Bill Callahan who are in place already!!
The writing is on the wall Shotty…..
Na-Na-Na-Na, Na-Na-Na-Na, Hey-Hey-Hey, Good Bye!!!!
if that doesnt make you wanna run through a wall for this guy… you have no heart…. man i really hope this works out for him and especially us…. i cant wait to see the blitzin we will now be doing on defense …he looks great so far!!!! go jets
YA, J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! The first move of the offseason will be to cut Baker and Barrett and allow Farve to move on. This will leave us with roughly 17 million in cap space. This gives us room to sign Ray Lewis and then get ready for the draft. Go Jets!
Mangini was handed Sutton because he was “experienced” and for continuity. I’m glad we won’t be making that mistake again (at least on defense).
Dan, I disagree
One thing about Ryan, he knows exactly how it feels to be a great defense on the other side of a sputtering offense and to just to get worn down.
I think he’ll spend atleast 1 of those day 1 picks on a offensive player. Hopefully its a stud receiver – Heyward Bay in the 1 or Louis Murphy in the 2.
Maybe a a QB??? Dare I say??? A new regime a new QB?
Jefff, where’d you hear that?
WOW!! He didn’t say “it’s all about the process”
(makes snoring noise)
What a relief. This should be a real change from Mangini.
I Love this guy! he is what we need. I do hope he speaks to Schotty and Schotty does not want the Job! at that point I say we got it all.
GO for it Rex!!!!!!
“That’s my team … don’t mess it up!” Any chance the front office can re-hire Buddy as the team enforcer!!!
The Jets are coming …You take a swipe at one of ours; we’ll take a swipe at two of yours.
Wow……
…. Did you hear that NE?
Let the countdown begin!!!
I feel like most bloggers hate the WFAN radio types. I happen to like beningo. Yes some of his theories are very pessimistic but its meant for entertainment.
He never got hype when the Jets were 8-3 and he appeared to right. To his credit he always felt mangini would screw it up and as many of us think, he did!
I like what he said during his press conference. This guy seems alot more vocal than the previous genre.
In all honestly im hoping he can attract one of the 3 line backers over from the ravens actually im hoping he brings bart scott over then goes and gets me a corner in a draft in round 1 hopefully this works out for us but i will take a wait and see approach
Reminds me of Parcells… shape and attitude, lol.
He already got rid of Bob Sutton after like 1 or 2 days on the job. That’s gotta be a good sign of something. I do like the cockiness Rex has, at least our team should be crazy/entertaining.
Rex just made me shiver in excitement, he’s the man.
Mangini’s “process” and “complementary football” can go to hell.
Let’s start measuring the boxes for Cassel/Brady and Pennington…
It sounds great. I will continue to pray he doesn’t have to keep the owner’s son, Shotty.
That way he can truly reshape a boring, emotionless team into his own attacking image.
glad he’s keeping westhoff and callahan they def. deserve to stay
sigh…I miss the “It’s a process” and ” It’s all gameplan specific” stuff. (NOT!)
I guess this KILL , KILL, KILL stuff will have to suffice for now…
lol
yeah, he definately showed suton the door yesterday in what i was reading.
but as far as this press conference……….
whoa!…im won over, the main thing you want from your HC is passion, desire, and killer instinct, rex sounds like the type to go for it on 4 & 10, lmao.(not that its good) but its like a bill bellicheck mindset in which you want to put your foot to your oppnonents throat when their down, something we completely lacked for YEARS!!!
and as far as his credentials…..they speak for themselves….as his team’s production and what he has gotten out of players (bart scott, terrel suggs)…….im am GLAD we didnt jump to shanahan or gruden…”the proven” caoches….whatever that means…..how about you tell that “proven” garbage to the two rookie coaches in the superbowl right now.
UFA, Bart Scott anyone?
Really glad about Westy.
Joe and Evan, these guys are sportcasters. They know what they’re talking about.
Sometimes Jet fans get caught up in their own world and refuse to look at reality.
Perfect press conference – I love this guy! I do think, however, that he basically said its shotty’s job if he wants it. He said he’d give him the chance to say “yes or no”, so it sounds like its up to him.
Loved the quote about the “jets are coming” and if you take on one of ours we take on two of yours.
I love the DC selection. The only experience required is experience in REX’s defense – that’s what he has!
I just feel like this guy is taking pride in being a Jet. How rare!!
P.S. I love how he referenced the “best corner in football”. I think we need to draft another blue chip corner, give Elam a chance to shine in this aggresive system, sign Scott and allow Rhodes to do his best Ed Reed impersonation. Throw in a tall #1 receiver and I am stoked! No wonder his players loved him!
Hey Bubby-
The game plan specific thing works great for Beli because he’s a brilliant coach (like it or not). The problem with our idiots was that their game plan specific plans were always for a different game.
First four rounds he’ll pick 3 on defense and one lightning fast WR. After that he’ll fill remaining holes relying on scouts to find the hidden jewels.
So true, jas…. and the difference was that Beli could adjust on the fly, but Eric and his staff would rigidly stick to a broken game plan for all 4 qtrs.
i dont know about the kerry rhodes and ed reed comparisons…i like kerry at SS. i would rather see lowery at FS beacuase of his ball hawking abilities and he did amas 5 FF last year…which is ALOT.
If you look at ed reed’s attributes and palomanu…their both little guys with a ball hawking menatlity…ed reed is basically a great CB playing safety. Kerry is a GREAT safety…lets not forget not possesing the finnese of ed reed, but he is alot bigger and physical. He more than doubled the reeds tackling number last season, and has more of a nack for sacks and FF, than compared to running around the secondary.
im sure ryan will know how to evaluate and know what to do with the personnel
To all the people and sportscasters that wanted a “proven” coach – - – If they are so proven why are they unemployed?
Wave,
That’s how it would play in my ideal scenario.Rhodes is built like a SS. He doesn’t have the range of an Ed Reed.
one down fall i think at the safety position last year was that we had similar players back there……physical……elam, smith, and kerry are all physical guys who dont have that much of gret speed….but the thing is elam and smith dont have the ounce of talent kerry has, so their expendable.
i think we need a smaller, faster ball hawk who can close the gaps on passes quicker to compliment kerry…..not another physial body who probably isnt even as fast as kerry.
Right. Abram Elam is easily the slowest safety that I have ever watched in the NFL. Rhodes is perfect to cover TEs and play in the box sometimes.
Lowery should be on the feild at all times at FS. he could be special.
Is is Training Camp yet..Im ready to run through a wall already..how badly does our fanbase need this !!! sexy rexy….I seriously have a man crush already
Damn I’m at work and can’t hear the press conference. I am liking the attitude I’m reading about but he’ll have to convince me on the field. Also, I know that all the draft picks were mangini picks so we’ll have to see how he does with that. Bradaway and tannenbaum ain’t exactly my dream team for the draft.
We’re going to need another plane for away game to fit Ryan’s and Westhoff’s balls!!! Keep Bryan Cox as an assistant please!
IMHO any evaluations about our players is difficult because of the crack pot schemes the idiots ran on both offense and defense. Good example was last night someone posted a complaint about the pass blocking. Maybe correct, but it is so linked to the play structure, scheme, game plan that we don’t know how the ineffectiveness of the receivers (don’t blame them either-did you see the ARI offense-always open) affected the o-line or the QB.
I truly believe the entire team under performed due to the overall schemes and game plans (ie-pass rush).
The Jets are $10 million over the projected 2009 salary cap, and Baltimore has proven players with knowledge of Coach Ryan’s 3-4 system. Now is the time Mike Tannebaum needs to show his value by showing how he can manage money. He needs to start reworking the player’s contracts, and cutting those underperforming players since Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs are scheduled to be free agents this year. If Mike can do that, maybe Coach Ryan can entice either of them to come to NY. I think it would greatly improve the Jets Defense not to mention improve the current Jets players’ transition to Ryan’s system.
lgs,
dead on! im actually salivating at the idea of lowery and kerry in the secondary together.
im sorry but lowery got burnt off the line too much for my liking, but i still feel like he has great skills and would be a great to rome the secondary and sometimes stuff the box because he is physical as well. with that we can probably concentrate on offense in the first round of the draft.
and with kerry beside him…..thats money!
i see kerry really thriving in rex’s sytem. despite bieng in this lackadaical jets defensive squad since being drafted and everybody getting on him because of the TEAM’S lapses…..he is undoubtedly top 3 when it comes to safties.
if you compare kerry rhodes satistics throughout his first 4 years to palomanu and ed reed, id say he has been alot more productive than those guys(except for reed’s int’s, lol) and kerry has yet to scratch the surface…and he’s a BIG guy who can run.
screw the superbowl, i cant wait for next season
can we drop thomas and bowens and coleman?
I heard somewhere that Cox followed Mangini to the Browns.
sign a vet cb in lito sheppard or aso…and in the draft we can trade up to get crabtree….or take wells or moreno at 17
lol. Wave, you’re on the money. I’d still rather see a CB come from a solid day 2 guy or a FA.
Jeff Dolini:
“The first move of the offseason will be to cut Baker and Barrett and allow Farve to move on. This will leave us with roughly 17 million in cap space. This gives us room to sign Ray Lewis and then get ready for the draft. Go Jets!”
Actually, cutting ties with those three frees up $19m of cap space, but the Jets are already $10m over the cap and will need at least $4m to pay their rookies, not to mention re-signing or replacing their free agents. Those moves basically don’t get the Jets anywhere near the $17m of cap space you mentioned. Closer to $5m…
I don’t think the Ravens will let Lewis hit the market. He is also getting up there in years, although his leadership would be invaluable.
I agree in trying to get Lewis, but not Suggs. I can’t believe that every scout in football wrongly evaluated Golston. I am convinced that Rex will develope him into a Suggs quality OLB. We already have the other side, so I wouldn’t waste the money on Suggs.
Dag…. imagine that… Crabtreeeeeeeeee…
SKIP
For the same reason, Lewis would only be a leadership pick.
You kow there are other FAs than the Ravens linebackers.
Igs:
“can we drop thomas and bowens and coleman?”
Can we? Yes. Despite the dead money it would create, there would be a net $4m cap saving.
Should we? Open for debate.
Note: I assume you mean Kenyon Coleman. If you meant Drew Coleman, then the net saving is slightly lower (only by about £400K though).
I meant Kenyon Coleman. For the money, to be backups, I’d rather have some young guys with higher ceilings. And something needs to be done about that RE spot.
Pouha should bouce also.
I think trading for a top 5 pick and taking a receiver is pretty ill-advised. Crabtree is by far the #1 in this class, but he’s no Calvin Johnson or Braylon Edwards.
I think we’re sitting pretty at #17 and will be able to get a quality defensive back or linebacker there – or someone like jeremy maclin – who is studly in his own right. I wouldn’t waste trading more picks. We have 8 draft picks this year lets make use of them wisely!
At least The Jets went out and put a quick stop to our pain. Though we will not forget the end of our dismal season, at least we have great hope going forward with a “win now” mentality.
-Rich Kotite
Why would anyone want Schott back? I’m dead serious. All those people who want him back, please tell me why we need this guy.
Naaaaa Drew,
I dont at all expect the Jets to get Crabtree. But I can dream right. Dependng on the price it would be smart move. It would change the entire dynamic of this offense because for once, defense couldn’t key in on the QB.
I’d love to see Louis Murphy in round 2.
the salary cap goes up every year …lets wait and see..who didnt like tannenbaum..?
i gues drafting
mangold, brick, leon, rhodes, jerricho, Revis …were all bad picks ..come on i have no problem with the GM..lets be excited for a change…I can t wait to go next year…wasnt saying that 3 weeks ago..
I would cut Drew Coleman for $1 savings.
the way devito has stepped up pouha is definately exendable…i didnt even realize he made that much money
wow I feel like I just watched Rocky and want to go out and hit someone! And here I am again so easily sucked in….
Bart Scott is a fa and he is in the middle with Harris would be fantastic i’m hoping he cuts the fat off this team and brings in players i know i might be passing judgement on players but these are the guys i want to see go
1.Eric smith= completely useless
2.Abram Elam= not smart enough
3.Ty law=old
4. c.j mosely= doesnt fit the d
5. mike Devito= marginal nfl player
6.David Barrett= old and slow
7. sione pouha
players i would love to have!!!
1. Gabe Watson=this man can play nose behind big jenk and learn
2. Lito sheppard or Dunta Robinson= good cbs to play opposite Revis
3.chris canty=a 3-4 defensive end and can play
make this happen draft me mauluga and im a happy guy
Junior,
I agree with everything accept for drafting Mauluga. he’s a thumping MLB. Where exactly are we going to use him?
Devito’s a young guy too right?
Right next to David Harris
Barton is a goner unless he comes cheap so a ilb is a need
Round 1 – CB/LB
Round 2 – KENNY BRITT (6′4″ 205 – probably more by the combine)
Britt is a freak and would be a STEAL if he’s available by our 2nd rounder.
Yea, but Mauluga’s not a cover guy. Yuo need to put a cover guy next to harris. Which is why Barton got burnt all over the place this season. If they go LB, the Jets should take Laurinitis. He’s a character pick too.
yeah devito is a young guy…
and junior, what logic is there in saying that mosley doesnt fit our defense?? he was effective last year, young guy and can play the tackle in a hybrid defense and play a DE in the 3-4…if anything he is VERY valuable to us right now…as is devito
as for the rest of your list…..yes, they can find the exit…or maybe keep elam as a backup…he IS cheap…making 10.00 an hour on the field, lol
and maluaga would not be a good fit for us to echo lgs……he is better suited for the 4-3…..but if brandon spikes were coming out this year, i would do any and everything to get that man on this team!
Devito i watched him never hold his ground at the point of attack last year and just was overpowered throughout
as for mosely he man film dont lie and stats dont lie when jenkins burned out last year he had a real oppotunity to show he belings on this team and he didnt
BRING IN GABE WATSON ASAP!!!!
If that is the case where mauluga is not a cover guy then go get me kushing i dont want laurenitis not because he is not a talent but because we will have the same problem like gholston he wont be allowed to be at any of the ota’s until the college year ends and i dont want that again kushig can come right in and start right away
I’d drop Elam and give the backup spot to an undrafted FA or a day 2 pick. I’d consider dropin CJ Mosley too and do the same.
wow… I’m sold
Cushing is an OLB but he is versatile enuff to play the middle. 17 would be a reach for him unless he has an amzin combine.
well we can agree to disagree..mosley is not a natual NT and is still developing……i remember those guys getting penetration…you dont…thats cool.
but lets not forget the fact that it didnt seem like anyone got penetration last season not more so on their capabilities, but more so the factbthat there was poor scheming and blitzing packages and no attack.
wha bout trading for carlos rogers… the skins are desperate for pics(they have 4) and hes a solid corner who just lost pt cuz of hall and random bs… i think we can swing him on the cheap and he would do well as a #2
Good point wave.
Cushig’s 40 is on the high side and he’s not really a cover guy either.
The perfect guy is Jason Phillips from TCU in round 3. I’ve been pushing this a lot the past two days, but here is my wishlist again. I’ m in love with it right now:
1st Round – Mark Sanchez – QB 6’3” 225 – USC
2nd Round – Louis Murphy – WR 6’3” 205 – Florida
3rd Round (Projected For Coles) – Jason Philips – ILB 6’1” 234 – TCU
3rd Round (From Saints) – Rashad Jennings – RB 6’1” 232 – Liberty
4th Round (From Redskins) – Robert Ayers – DE 6’3” 270 – Tennessee
5th Round – Kevin Barnes – CB 6’1” 188 – Maryland
6th Round – C.J. Spillman – FS 6’0” 194 – Marshall
7th Round – Greg Isdaner – OG 6’4” 315 – West Virginia
Free Agent – Ramon Foster – OT – 6’6” 325 – Tennessee
Free Agent – Greg Carr – WR – 6’6” – Florida State
Free Agent – Fui Vakapuna – FB 6’1” 254 – BYU
I told you all…. Rex IS THE GUY!!!!!!
NOW let the QB Battle on the roster begin!
I’d love to pickup Rogers. Good catch.
i’m going to say that he brings in a guy like dwan edwards he is a raven and a free agent who would be cost efficient so dont be surprised to see him at de or backing up one of the other 2
Julius Peppers says he wants to play in a 3-4. But does he strike you guys as a 3-4 DE. Not the Jets could afford him?
Blaeschottenheimer,
Rex said he was going to be fully involved with the Defense. Also the new DC has been with Rex 7 years. He should know the Defense backwards and forwards. What did you want him to do, keep Sutton?? After all, he has experience.
dont want Sanchez !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
besides the fact he isnt falling to 17 Rex Ryan is a defensive minded first guy so even though tanny has the final say on the whole thing expect this team to go defense defense defense
Junior,
I disagree. As I said earlier, Ryan knows what it’s like to be a great defense and have an offense that sputters. he also talked a lot in his press conference about offense supporting defense and visa versa. He said that he wants to attack with the D and attack with the offense. I feel he wont ignore the offense.
Whenever you talk to a guy who is defensive minded they all say
if you score you might win
if they score they might win
if they dont score you will definetly win
I have a good feeling about this… which might be considered bad because I have a good feeling about every season.
We’re going to attack … you’re going to see the fur fly!
You had me at hello…
X’s and O’s give way to attitude and leadership.
I have to hand it to Tannenbaum for making a pick that would
make the die hard fans salivate.
I just watched the interview in its entirety on the Jets site. I am pumped!! I wish we could go out on the field right now and shove the ball down someone’s throat!! I am curious how guys like Coles will adjust to the new coaching style, but Ryan seems like the kind of guy who will cut the deadwood if it is necessary.
carlos rodgers would be a good pick up, what do you guys think about lito sheppard, he’s a pro bowl caliber corner and is the odd man out in philly.
to anyone doubting rex’s offensive philosiphy, he has the right mind.
i just heard him on espn saying he wants to establish an “all weather” offense..meaning that rain, snow etc. shouldnt be an issue to their style of play and through establishing the run.
he seems big on that. he also took note to the caliber of players on our o-line. good news for those who hated that stupid west coast trickery foolishness that marty tried to pull in the denver game and against the seahwaks…run the dam ball!
and save the trickery and reverses for games in miami and nice weather, lol.
“Julius Peppers says he wants to play in a 3-4. But does he strike you guys as a 3-4 DE. Not the Jets could afford him?”
Actually, he said he wants to play OLB. Gap control would be an issue on the line, wouldn’t you think?
Maualuga is a tremendous athlete…and Harris did play in the MIKE role as a rookie. On the whole, I think they could play together, but the defense would need to be a more aggressive attacking defense (which most of you are hoping for anyway).
Cushing is as versatile as they come (I’ve seen him both at DE and safety at times) and a local kid to boot.
Shepard would be a good pickup. He’s smallish but he’s a solid cover corner. He would be a good pickup. Only 27 years old.
Bent,
Good point. That’s exactly why I asked if he striked you as a 3-4 DE – gap control. he also seems too big to play OLB unless he exclusively rushes the passer a la LT. It could work.
Cushing’s not the fastest guy, but he is mad versitile. He’d still be a reach at 17. A 4.7 40 LB playing safety is much diff in college than it is in the NFL.
Mauluga – That’s all good and well but why would I spend a high draft pick on a player that I already have. Harris is already that player. The middle of the Jets D got burned up and down because Eric Barton coulnt cover anyone. Teams just moved up the feild 10 by 10. Naaaa, you gotta be efficient with your draft picks in the NFL.
I can’t compare Rey to Harris exactly. He’s faster and a lot more reckless (which can be good and bad). I personally think he’d be wasted taking on blockers, but if paired with a guy like Harris, they could share the load, but yes, the Jets right now need an inside backer that can cover, primarily because the outside backers can’t.
I never suggested Cushing at 17, but he has impressed me in the past. I would be concerned about his durability because he missed a lot of time.
I personally would like either a big WR or a Qb with pick #1.
But bent what do you think about Laurinitis if they go LB?
Igs – Jeremy Maclin is the guy. Although he’s not huge (6′1″), he’s a play maker who runs a 4.3 forty. He should go right around our pick, too.
i like Maclin. But I’d still prefer someone bigger. He’s like a faster, more dyamic version of Cotchery. Last time we went to the NFC championship we had Keyshawn. I want that receiver.
I wouldn’t be mad at it. But he wouldn’t be my first choice.
Here’s the bottom line, Ryan is going to bring respectablity to the Jets Defense, and will be recognized as one of the “Elite” defense’s in the league. The players are pumped, the FA’s are pumped, the fan base is pumped, and Coach Ryan is pumped, and should the Jets draft on the defensive line of the ball this year, the players coming in are going to be pumped. PUMP IT UP!!!!!
Igs- But I want to go to the AFC championship
lol. Yeah I meant AFC. Remember Vinny and the jets?
I like maclin too……santonio holmes reincarnated. He’s a definate deep threat.
I wouldn’t say he’s small tho, somewhat bigger than a lot of recievers at 6′1(none of our starters are 6′0….steve smith is 5′9 for ex.) but I can’t ignore a need for a BIG plaxico, moss, johnson, fitzgerald type of reciever.
[...] The Jets Blog has full coverage of Rex Ryan’s news conference earlier today. The indefatigable Brian Bassett wrote: “He had more interesting soundbites in the first two minutes than Mangini did in three years.” A few excerpts: [...]
nickytlibs-
Thanks for the post about Shotty.
I’ve been posting the same thing for 3 weeks and no one ever answers.
The best I got back was an indirect it wasn’t his fault-it was everybody else who messed his offense up from Mangini to the line to the QB and on and on.
As my father used to say about things like Shotty-it’s not his fault!
OH REALLY.
True. I saw him play once this year. He was unstopable. Now Steve Smith doesn’t count because he’s secretly 6′7″.
I’m not sure that Maclin would be that much of a leap over Cotchery. may be nice on the other side of him.
maclin has desmond howard/peter warrick written all over him
I said it before and I’ll say it again –Kenny Britt is the guy to target, and I think we can get him in round 2. The kid is a straight up beast. He’s fast, physical, a good route runner, and can get up and go after the ball. I’ve never seen him not out-run a defender in pursuit. Plus, we can still get our DB/LB/DE in round one.
Basically, he fits the mold we need to fill to a T, and he’s under the radar from high profilers like Maclin, Harvin, LaFell, etc. Britt is just as talented and may have the biggest upside of them all.
Then again, I’m a Rutgers guy, so I could be a bit biased…. heh
Yeah, that’s no lie, steve smith is probably the most talented reciever in the league besides fitzgerald.
But I would love maclin if the jets decided to part ways with coles, but then again, I’m not too keen on an all “young” wide reciever corps. For guidence and intelligence you need some type of leadership.
We can say who we don’t like or want traded but Coles is the ONLY veteran reciever on this team and I think that goes a long way as far as smarts and wit on the field.
Drafting an ILB like Mauluga or Laurenitis would depend on whether we signed one of the Ravens free agent LBs. Cutting Favre, Barrett and Barton would leave enough cap room to sign Ray Lewis, if he wants to follow Ryan. Would you rather have Favre or Lewis? BTW, anyone who thinks Mauluga can’t play PD hasn’t been watching much USC football.
I’m not in favor of cutting Thomas. He has all the tools and just needs a kick in the ass. He was “inspired” during his contract year, then slacked off when he got the $$$. I think Ryan can get him back on track.
I’m also in favor of keeping Schotty. He spent the last off-season developing an offense to fit Clemens. Then came Favre, who didn’t like pre-snap motion, and didn’t know the system or the terminology. Schotty was the good soldier. He was the hot OC in 2006 and did not suddenly lose it. Clemens, playing behind a solid OL, should be fine in Schotty’s systrem.
Thomas’ gotta go. Too much money wrapped up in that position. Unless Gholston moves to MLB???
I’d love for the Jets to get Kenny Britt. I think Cotch has enough maturity to hold the lin when it comes to leadership. True about Coles. But there just soooo many possesion receivers on this team. Oy.
Pace, Gholston, Thomas, and Bowens are all the same player. By pay, Thomas should be a starter. But so should Gholston and pace.
I’d put Gholston and Pace on either side. Harris in the middle and draft Jason Phillips as my cover LB.
THis way I can cut the fat and the payroll.
Cotchery > Coles. Laverne has lost a step and is a whiner AND sucks up a lot of $$$$. Cotchery is our go-to possession, 3rd down type receiver. I love Stuckey as a slot WR and he’s only going to improve. I think Brad Smith is serviceable, but start-worthy. That leaves a big whole for the other starting WR. Throw Clowney in there too as a deep threat.
Cotch – mid-size, possession, reliable
Stuckey – smaller, slot, shifty
Clowney – small, fast, deep threat
??????? – big target, deep threat, red zone target
FILL IN THE BLANK!
Good catch.
I’d only add that, unless we get an incredibly accurate QB, I like Clowney as a slot guy.
We gotta get tha red zone guy. I mean it’s been soooooo long. Darius Heyward-Bey reminds me of Andre Johnson and Braylon Edwards because of the size/speed/hands factor.
You don;t save a penny by cutting Coles. His salary is guananteed. Besides, his toughness sets an example for other players. He plays as long A HW Cn walk.
OOoooooo Jerry, I forgot about that guaranteed salary. What happens if he’s traded. Do they incur a penalty?
Right on, Jerry. Forgot about that.
Well, Coles can stay… I GUESS.
You’re right about Coles approach. While toddler-esque at times, is pretty damn tough, and I give him credit for that.
I still think we need to add that mystery WR and work him into our starting rotation though
Yea. Opposing defenses have 0 respect for the Jets passing game. It’s sickening. I’d still trade coles depending on the risk/draft # factor.
I can’t wait for camp!
Idunno, cotch IS a reliable guy, but as far as leadership, wit, wisdom and smarts on the field, I don’t think he is anywhere close. cotch is a very quiet and is more a go out and doesn’t have that much experience compared to coles.
Rexy is the man; as someone above said, he’s the Big Tuna come again…so now that we’ve fixed the DC problem here’s what’ll go down next time Rexy meets w/Shotty:
Rexy: Hey, Mike T likes you – you staying or going?
Shotty: I can script a TD or FG on every opening drive.
Rexy: I repeat, you staying or going?
Shotty: I can script a TD or FG on every opening drive.
Rexy: I got that, but why the F&% else should I keep you around?
Shotty: I can script a TD or FG on every opening drive.
Rexy: Don’t you have anything intelligent to say?
Shotty: Mike T likes me! I like when Brett throws deep!
Rexy: Well F&% that, I’m coaching, and it’s my way or the highway – we’re gonna RUN people over and control the clock! Hit the road Jack.
Here’s an idea. We keep Shotty for the first drive then send him home (that should keep his dad (tanny) happy. Then we let a real OC coach the rest of the game.
Jas-
I’m glad we are on the same page. Enough nonsense with this guy, get rid of him and move on.I’m sure Rex has someone in mind already for the OC job that can do a much better job than Schott.
I’ve been watching the senior bowl practices. If Brian Robiske is available in the second round, he’d be a great red zone receiver. 6′3″ and a coaches son. He could contrbute immediately.
This may be an over-simplification, but I believe that Rex’s reputation in the NFL will allow us to pursue a free agent or 2 (i.e. Scott) on the defensive side of the ball and get them here at relative value since they want to play for him.
This will allow us to focus on offense in day 1 of the draft.
Coles cannot be released without us having a $7m cap hit for his guaranteed salary of $6m and $1m of remaining bonus, but he can be traded if a team is willing to take on that last year of guaranteed salary. This would give the Jets a $1m cap hit for the remaining bonus and therefore they would save $5m overall.
Igs – Gholston doesn’t have the skillset to be a middle linebacker at this time. Right now he’s an edge rusher with a year of experience of being a backup outside backer in a passive scheme.
Jerry – I like your post. I see MLB as our biggest need. The Jets should absolutely address this through free agency if they can (Lewis or Scott would do this), but then approach those guys as priorities in the draft if they can’t get either – which is far from a given. However, I have one nitpick: “Cutting Favre, Barrett and Barton would leave enough cap room to sign Ray Lewis” in isolation would only get the Jets $7m under the cap and they need at least $4m to sign their rookies, let alone re-signing or replacing their numerous free agents. Lewis (or any other big name) will require many more cuts and restructures, but it is possible in theory without completely decimating the roster.
Back to Igs: If they can’t address this need through free agency, Animal Jr. (Laurinitis) is also a solid player. Maualuga, to me, may be a better fit because he will make impact plays, although if his work ethic remains a concern, Lauranitis may be the safer bet. Either would be a huge upgrade in coverage, although Lauranitis is better in that area, albeit that Maualuga again has a knack for the big play. Where Rey has the edge is in his ability to shed blocks, although if the likes of Jenkins, Coleman and Harris do their job correctly, either could thrive. As I said earlier, Rey can be reckless (which can be good and bad). Whether both or either will be there at 17 (or if I would trade up/down), is something I don’t have a handle on yet. I do think either could pair with Harris effectively.
Hi guys. I’m a Ravens fan. Jets got a great guy. There’s no one in baltimore thats not sad to see Rex go. The guys honest to a fault and its not talk. you will have a good defense. As long as you have corners you’ll be middle to bottom of the top 10 first year and rex will not consider it good enough. We were 6 in 07 and it looked like the guys dog died. No corners it can get ugly sometimes, but regardless you’ll get to see Brady knocked around. And he rotates constantly, everyone plays and no one will wear down. Also, heads up for Bart scott, he’s free this year. Guy can cover and hit like a brick wall, he’s better than Ray now, but Rays our face.
thats good to hear, zach. i was hoping we could sign bart scott. maybe we could free up some cap space
