Assistant Coaches Moving Away From the Jets

Yesterday, the Browns announced hiring four more former Jets assistants in defensive line coach Bryan Cox, defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson, defensive quality control coach Andy Dickerson, and assistant strength and conditioning coach Rick Lyle on Thursday. This now makes at least five coaches, with former Jets QB coach Brian Daboll already noted as the team’s new Offensive Coordinator.

Also, Jim Herrmann who was the Jets linebacker coach (and coached David Harris in college) has taken a that same job with the Giants.

  1. As long as we keep Westhoff, I don’t care about the rest.

  2. Cleveland fans must be thrilled to get this “A” team. They understand “it’s all about the process”. Good riddance.

Time will prove Mangini is at best an average coach.

  3. Honestly no tears shed over those guys going to the Browns. Also, I am relieved to see Jim Herrmann go, a completely overrated coach. He has done mediocre work at best with our linebackers. And David Harris should be just fine without him, indeed when Harris burst onto the scene his final year at Michigan Herrmann was already coaching with the Jets.

  4. The anti-Mangini crap needs to STOP. The more crap you talk about this guy, the better of a coach he will be, and the more times he will knock us out of the playoffs.

I don’t know know about you, but I think we’ll see the word “Mangenious” in the New York Papers in the future.

Eric Mangini has a lot of potential to be a great head coach, that is why Bill Belicheck was so upset that he took the Jets job. There is a reason Belicheck didn’t want to work for Woody Johnson. Woody Johnson is a COACH KILLER.

If Rex Ryan can get something out of our players, I’ll be as thrilled as the next Jets fans. However, I am not going to get my hopes up when clearly 90% of our team under achieve on a consistent basis.

  5. Kyle…

I said Mangini was (at best) an average coach. You disagree?

  6. I don’t believe that 90 % of our players under acheived, but there were a select few that did. The biggest was Gholton, but I still have high hopes for him in a new sheme. But, If 90 % of our team under achieved, then there sure does look like we have a lot of up potential. Rex, with his personality, will be just the guy to get it out of them.
As far as the coaches that are departing — most of them probably were told that Rex wanted his own team. Good luck to Mangini, he tried his hardest. Look for Rex hiring a lot of his old group.

  7. Mangini will be a better coach in Cleveland than he was here. Mangini is smart and he will always out work you. He has learned from his Jet expierance, reflected, and changed a little. He has more control in Cleveland, less pressure, low expectations. You will see a better mix on defense, with more pressure.
9-7 his first year, 10-6 in the second (eliminated in the first round of the playoffs), and 11-5 in his third year, earning a Cowher extension of 5 years at 10 million per year…

  8. Kyle:

I definitely agree with you on Johnson. He IS a coach killer and by extension Tannennbaum is a $uck-up disgrace !! You can see a rift comming between these dirtbags and Ryan by Johnson’s declaring his “love” for Farve and Ryan’s non-commital. He doesn’t want to bother Farve now but can’t wait to shove him down Ryans throat. All in the name of wanting to win. What a meddling hypocrite. I’s all about $$$$$$$ to this guy

  9. Hank, think you’re being too hard on Tanny and especially Woody. The man spent $140,000,000 last year on the team, and if you listen to him he wants to win. It’s obvious that Tannenbaum has improved our roster and I give him and Woody BIG credit for realizing that the team needed a change in leadership and they wasted no time in getting the guy they think is the right fit. Ryan’s HC career will play out and we’ll see how smart that pick was 2-3 years from now. But if you look at the overall picture:

Tannenbaum/ Woody got rid of Herm, and got a good pick for him (Leon) . That was a great job. They Mangini was the guy, and they were wrong. But under Tannenbaum as GM, the team has 2 winning seasons out of 3 and made the playoffs once. Last year the FO knew that the main weakness, as far as being a legit playoff contender was the QB position, and Tannenbaum got Favre, something no one believed he could do. At 8-3, and coming off 2 impressive road wins, he looked like a genius. But Favre got injured and the coaching staff did nothing. They should have either sat him down or coached around the injury. They did neither, and add to that that the team was completely uninspired during that stretch and that is why Mangini was fired, and deservedly so. As the team is constructed now we will most likely have a winning record next year, and if we get consistent QB play we will probably make the playoffs. I like our owner and our FO.

  10. Also, I’m not sure what you’re looking at, but I see NO HINT of a rift. You are really reaching there. To me Ryan seems completely comfortable with the idea of Favre returning. He answered all those questions very well. What did you want him to say?

  11. Favre venting warning!!!

Favre played through the level of injury he had on and off through out his whole career. You don’t have that start streak in the NFL if you don’t play hurt. Stop giving him a free pass. Someone showed yesterday he has been horrible in December for the past 3-4 years. Why would anyone want a guy who cant win when it matters anymore? Why would anyone pay 12-13 million for that? Tannenbaum didn’t do his HW on Favre. Am I on crazy pills here or are people in denial?

  12. They did coach around the injury hence all the short passes against Tenn and the Pats.

  13. JAGG, I’m not even saying I want Favre back. But I have to be fair. The last 5 games he could not get the ball downfield. I know what I saw. Why would they even call for a deep pass? If we ran the ball every play against Seattle we would’ve won that game. My comments are not about giving Favre a pass, it is to look at the entire truth. The coaching staff did a horrendous job on both sides of the ball.

  14. Jagg, then what happened to those game plans after Tenn? You’re correct about that game, Favre threw short passes almost every time, and we ran the ball more than we passed. Even you would admit Favre looked great in those 2 games. Where was the gameplanning after that?

  15. I’m not applauding the coaching, but the man who played the largest part in losing the Seattle game still works for the team. Winning Seattle means nothing we needed two wins. 40 passes in the snow on the road.

  16. Jim Herrmann did such a great job with Gholston that the Giants just had to have him. Great pick-up.

I agree with Dennis, as long as Westhoff stayed on to run the Special Teams, that is all that counts. Westhoff, with a full pre-season to prepare and an aggressive head coach pushing him, will have our special teams leading the league this year.

Tannenbaum needs to get him a punter and a kicker who can get the ball into the end zone on kick-offs (even if we have to keep two kickers).

  17. Defenses figured out Favre was limited. They concentrated more on stopping the run and our defense couldn’t stop the run with Jenkins run down. Favre also stared down single recievers allowing opposing defenses to make plays, get us off the field and get our tired defense back on the field. Our defense won us IMO more games than our offense in the first 11 games. When the defense went the team went.

  18. Assuming that favre does not return next year, what do you think our options are for a QB. I feel that Ratlif has alot of potential and although i could see the jets wanting a veteran QB right now, i would love to see them give Ratliff a shot.

  19. We have to give Ratliff and KC have a shot at it. I don’t care if we have to change from one to the other 8 games in. We cannot risk letting a gem slip through our fingers.

  20. JAGG, if we beat Seattle we would’ve had a chance to win the division against Miami.

  21. I agree about Clemens and Ratliff. I’m sure I am in the minority but I would be very comfortable going into the season with Clemens named the starter, and Ratliff #2. And like Jagg said, if by mid season Clemens has a problem, give Ratty a shot. I would add to that, if there is a QB available to us in rd 1 or 2 that the FO really likes, then we get him, and groom him for the future, and that future could be the 2010 season.

  22. I’m aware, but I wasn’t disappointed by Mangini or even Sutton/ Schott in that game. Miami took away the run and Favre gave them the ball 3 times. The defense got beat for touchdowns but only let up 17 points with a depleted Jenkins. That game should have been won. Favre should walk the plank for that one. Int on an F’n screen.

  23. Tannenbaum was so preoccupied with whether or not he could trade for Favre that he didn’t stop to think if he should.

Just slapped him on a plastic lunch box and started selling him

    To paraphrase a movie

  24. JAGG, no doubt Favre was horrible. At the same time did you see the emotional level of the entire team? No one was fired up in the least. The Phins were very fired up and crazy. Our team looked just like the head coach. Very matter of fact, nothing important really going on,. Looked like they were just playing out the string. The saddest part is, even with Favre’s horrendous day, if Mangini had the “team” ready and fired up, we would’ve won.

  25. BTW, Kerry Rhodes stated in an interview that the team as whole was very flat at the end of the season. That’s the HC

  26. How can you be fired up as a team when your QB is digging you a hole once the game starts? Team captains are supposed to fire people up too. Where were they? Where was Kerry Rhodes all year? Favre’s speach wouldn’t inspire or pump up anyone.

  27. Belicheck left for NE becacuse kraft offered him whatever he was asking, and NOT because Woody is a “coach Killier” Woody had just bought the team, and nobody had a clue about him.

  28. Kerry Rhodes doesn’t deserve a right to express his opinion. Elam made more impact plays.

  29. His lone INT was on a hailmary from JP Losman.

  30. JAGG – Rhodes’ year was disappointing, but I will be posting about this in the near future, so stay tuned. I am confident that he will have a more impactful year next season, but you’ll have to wait for my post to see the (possible) reasons why.

  31. JAGG, you obviously just hate Favre. There are 2 seperate issues here but you want to make them connected. Favre played bad, and the coaching staff did a horrible job. Now in my defense, if you want to connect the 2, then it’s more the coaching staff’s fault because:

    Bad coaching WILL make players worse, BUT;

Bad players CANNOT make coaches coach poorly.

And if somehow the coaching staff did things they shouldn’t have because of Favre’s play, then that’s all the more worse for them.

  32. Actually he also had a pick and 50 yard return against the Rams…(although, in a 47-3 win, perhaps that’s like hitting a home run when you’re 10-0 up in the 8th).

  33. and as a member of the team Rhodes can express his opinion, of course. C’mon JAGG, that’s a ridiculous statement. Rhodes is absolutely qualified to comment on the mental and emotional state of the team, just like any other player.

  34. Bent- I did forget the 2nd INT and fully expect him to bounce back, but after that pay day I would have expected more. I’m actually a big fan of his. If I were him I would be low key.

Pete- Favre is a bum. It isn’t 1995 and he stares down WRs. I don’t hate him he is just a football player. I hate his contract and impact on the team.

Good execution can bail out bad coaching
good coaching can bail out bad execution

No one did their part. When the coaching was good execution was horrible and when the coaching was poor execution was horrible. Schott still has a job.

  35. In the world I’m from if you mess up and let people down you keep your mouth shut and work your butt off to not let it happen again. I don’t get paid millions in my world. Any leader should be trying to inspire. I never saw him doing anything in the game or on the sidelines.

  36. Jagg – hindsight is always clearer than foresight. At the time of the Favre trade, Favre had just QB’d a 13-3 team that almost made the SB (yeah, I know he threw an INT to end the Champ game, but do you throw out a 13-3 year because of that play?) and Chad looked horrible the previous year, throwing about as many picking 6’s in 9 games as Favre did all this year. I, for one, don’t blame Tanny for making that move. On top of that, look at how Johnson is still drooling over Favre. Chances are that woody was pushing tanny to make that trade if he could. Not about PSLs and Jersey sales? Complete f*#king BS! Do I want Favre back? Hell, no, but it still was a gamble worth taking at the time and if you insist on blaming tanny for that then you also have to applaud him for getting Jenkins and Pace in FA and drafting Revis, Harris, Leon, etc.

  37. NYC, good points

  38. I do applaud most of Tannenbaum’s work, but if you spend enough money you can do almost anything. I would have considered Jake Scott over Faneca due to age, but that is semantics.

Favre’s 13-3 year was helped by a very good team and he still played poorly in the late months. We need a guy who plays well in the cold. I have a couple of Packer friends who were clamouring for Rodgers. We didn’t have a similar style to the Packers offense and in previous years Favre was shown to be winding down.

When I heard Favre wanted to come back I thought whatever team grabbed him would be suckers. Then it was us. I don’t think it was all Favre’s fault. Just as always a QB is the lynchpin of the team with him and Jenkins playing poorly we were doomed.

  39. Plus he was on the cover of Madden.

  40. JAGG, at least we agree we would like to see Clemens and Ratliff play.

  41. I feel as if favre’s speach before the miami game says it all! how can the team get excited and pumped before a huge game when their leader says “if we win we win, if we loose we loose” “lets just play jets football, what ever that may be”…..COME ONNNNN, i want to see someone like drew brees fired up before every game and we need that. Favre is not dedicated enough to this team and it will be a hugee mistake if he comes back.

  42. Disagreeing is my fav part of blogging. Allows you to see all sides better.

I wanted to see them last year (against a weaker, easier to learn against schedule) and believe that one of them will be able to lead us. How far only time will tell.

  43. JAGG – you make some good points, but not sure how I feel about “but if you spend enough money you can do almost anything”. Wonder if Daniel Snyder still agrees with you on that? If you add the word “intelligently” between the words “money” and “the”, then I’m on board.

  44. Good point. Snyder is a schmuck.

  45. I still give the coaches credit for integrating all of the new pieces as well as they did (god knows the Redskins never could) and for what our new staff is saying about Gholston, maybe having him benched wasn’t such a bad idea.

  46. Kyle!
take a breath, belicheat didn’t leave because he tought woody was a coach killa. He left before even earning anything about woody. An owner kills a coach by not providing what he needs! see new practice complex, not spending to get the type of players the coach says he need, again see last year spending spree, and meddling in the everyday coaching decisions(se Dallas) if the players were underacheavers then it falls on the coach to get those players to live up to their potentials.

  47. we have to see what KC can do. declare an open competition in camp and have KC and Ratliff battle it out. if another vet like Leftwich or Carr can be obtained for a min contract, then do it and throw him into the mix. more importantaly, they need to get a QB coach that can groom young QBs. the thought of schotty doing this for KC or Ratty scares me.

  48. brian;
i find it ironic that someone who ripps the oc. you would actually call for the signing of Carr? Leftwich? yes woody should have hired you as the OC.

  49. Pettine sure seems like a breath of fresh air as DC after Sutton, though to be fair, with mangini’s tight-lipped policy, who knows what Sutton was really like. And if Mangini was holding back Schott, was he doing the same to Sutton? Don’t read this as me wishing Sutton was still DC, I don’t.

  50. Every Coach we have other than Westhof can go with my blessings. every Coach on the Defensive side of the Ball especialy. L A T E R!!!! don’t let the door hit them on the way out.
