Roster Update
The Jets have apparently been tweaking their roster behind the scenes since the season came to an end. Just to bring you up to date, these are the moves they made so far:
* Resigned OLB Marques Murrell to one year extension ($460K)
* Signed DL Kareem Brown to a one year futures contract ($460K)
* Signed former Green Bay running back Noah Herron, who you may remember from two years ago when they were down to their seventh stringer but still running the ball effectively to a one year futures contract ($535K)
* As previously reported, signed RB Marcus Mason to a one year futures contract ($385K)
* Signed 6’5″ Arena Football WR Huey Whittaker to a one year minimum futures contract ($310K)
* Signed current and former practice squadders FB Jehuu Caulcrick, LB Kenwin Cummings, G Stanley Daniels, WR Marcus Henry, DL Ropati Pitoitua, DT Bryan Schaefering, LB Brandon Renkart to one year minimum salary futures contracts
Ryan Keenan was the only practice squadder at the end of the season that they have not re-signed yet.
It’s good to see guys like Murrell, Caulcrick and Cummings kept on board and although most of these guys will perhaps end up as camp fodder, you never know…
For cap purposes, any of these guys that fail to make the team will be released, but this will probably not save the team any cap space, because only the top 51 salaries are taken into account on the salary cap.
Now that the Jets do have 51 players under contract, that makes cap projections, slightly easier…now you have to bear in mind that if you release a guy and save (picking a random figure out of the air) $13m, then the actual saving will be reduced slightly because another salary will be bumped up into the top 51 to replace it (so you only really save $12.7m. Another thing to bear in mind when adding up all the cap space we might have.
Next order of business: Clowney, Ratliff and Mosley.

Still treating the ofense like a second class citizen? They’ll pay for it…
Come on? Noah Herron? Give me a break.

lgs,
This is moves made since the end of the season, unrestricted free agency signings won’t begin until march, so why does it upset you that they are signing guys like Noah Herron now? Its not like they are passing on top flight talent to sign these guys now (to minimum salaries) and why single out the offensive signings, they aren’t blowing anyone away with these defensive players either?
A little patience, if you want to complain after free agency and the draft ok, but now, its a little ridiculous.

I concur with sec208. Let’s wait not only to see who rex fills his staff out with, but also to see if JETS make any trades, who they sign in fa and who they draft. If you like rex, way too early to be complaining.
-
Sec,
You’re right, it just bothers me because I always feel like the Jets are trying to make the most out of much lesser players and live off that when it comes to the offense.
This is fine when it’s balanced out. The Patriots have had a lot of success with it. But the jets have little success with it and do it waaay too much.
When’s the last time the Jets made something out of a nobody player?
I’m not especially interested in FA. More so I want the Jets to be efficient and successful in the draft, as much on offense as on defense. It’s looking real skeptical on the offensive side. But we’ll see right.

lgs,
I’m all for improving the team any way possible, but drafting well, especially in the mid to late rounds certainly is the easier path to long term success. Right now Noah Herron is nothing more than camp fodder, his odds of making the team barring a significant injury are slim to be sure, but it is good to have this guy sitting at the bottom of the depth chart right now, a guy with at least some real game experience in case of the injury plague.

Igs –
You ask when’s the last time the Jets made something out of a nobody player?
Maybe we’re spoiled, but a lot of teams don’t get much from their drafts beyond the first day — but over the past few years, the Jets have had unqualified success in the 4th round with guys like Rhodes, Cotchery, Smith and Leon, to name a few.
If you’re talking scrap heap-type guys, remember Brandon Moore is a converted defensive lineman and is now the starting right guard. I agree, I’d like to see more, but it’s not like the team has never done it.

Cool. We don’t necessarily disagree. I’m just keeping a watchful eye, hoping that at some point them Same Ol’ Jets habits start to turn a bit. That’s a good point about Herring.
Tanny really hasn’t done so great with the day 2 drafting. We’ll see how it plays out. I’m very excited about D-Rex. But I feel like what I’ve been watching for the past 20 years was as much offensive deficiency as it was defensive. And we’ve been on the brink of greatness for quite some time… but just on the brink.
We’ll see.

R in CT,
Not to be combatative, but you can take Brandon Moore, Brad Smith off that list.
But I’m talking more about making something out of the Danny Woodheads and Jehu Culricks of the league. One of their deficeincy’s is devlopment.
But here, I do look with hope at the coming season. I’m not the pessemist you think I am, just hoping for no more of the same.

Glad to see they’re hanging onto Cummings, just can;t forget how much potential he showed in preseason.
-
Bent, Great job, as usual
Good signings. Can’t wait to see the 6’5″ receiver on the practice field.
-
Cummings and Caulcrick both have alot of potential.
Lgs, I’m with you on player development. It seems like it’s been a long time since we coached someone up that came out of nowhere. The biggest one is at the QB position. Look at our history there. It would be great to have people on our staff that can develop players. I believe we have one in Callahan. He’s a keeper for the OL.
-
lgs – why are you taking Moore of that list? He has been a very good starting player who seems to improve every year. Just because he isn’t a pro-bowler doesn’t mean he isn’t a very good player and a great value (read: very well developed) for where they got him.
-
Moore has highest grades of all the OL the past two years.
-
Yeah, you can’t take Moore off that list. He was our the best run blocker on that offensive line.
-
The draft will be the thing that determines the future for these guys. BEST OF LUCK……..and for God’s sake, work hard.

Sorry if i should already know this but what is a “futures contract”????

And signing Leon to a long-term contract before he ends up in Cleveland.
