Link: Lupica on Namath’s Super Bowl

Mike Lupica descends from his dais to talk about the Jets, well the Jets of forty years ago. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an interesting read and in it he says that for all the great quarterbacks to have played in the Super Bowl, there’s something about the panache of Namath’s game.

It’s not because he was the best quarterback to ever play in the Super Bowl because he wasn’t … still the biggest star is Namath. Terry Bradshaw won four Super Bowls, Montana had his four. Troy Aikman had three. So does Tom Brady. Namath only had the one.

And somehow it remains the one.

Clemente and Namath were the only two athletes I remember who when no one gave their teams a chance guaranteed victory and delivered.

Clemente, after losing the first two WS games in Baltimore, said we will win two in Pittsburg and win it and performed brilliantly.

Jet fans know all about Namath.

To me, putting a team that no one gives a shot to on your back and bringing them home is what greatness and star power are about.

These two are my greatest ever.
