Lewis: “If the Jets Go After Brett, I’m Gonna Make a Phone Call”

by Bent on February 6th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

Cannizzaro reports in the NY Post that Ray Lewis has been talking about the possibiltiy of joining the Jets, how he’d love to work with Rex Ryan and would thrive under the pressure of the big city.

But get this:

Lewis went as far as to lobby for Brett Favre to return to the Jets. He hinted that Favre returning would be a factor in swaying him to sign with the Jets since it would have the Jets in a win-now mode.

“That scenario you almost have to see where it goes to see what they’re doing as an organization,” Lewis said. “Then that’s when you can jump in and pick up where they’re going to leave off. If they’re saying we are going to go after Brett, then that’s when I am going to make a phone call.”

Hmmm…

Well, if Lewis wants Brett, then he better be willing to play for the vet’s minimum.

i know the cap situation is tight, but mr T, needs to pull a danny ainge and make this happen.

    favre could restructure, couldnt he?

  3. avatar Bassett says:

Favre COULD restructure … but he won’t.

    pennington would have – LOL

    Ewwww.

2 aging “winners”. And neither of them will help us win. Count on that. Brett sucks.

If he is back on the team im leaving as a fan.

    Just keeps getting interesting.

Brett and Ray better take major pay cuts to win a championship this year.

This is getting good. In the end Brett will stay, but getting Lewis would be a great pickup. “The Capologist” will surely find a way to make this work. If the Jets do get Lewis, this only gives Jets fans more reason to get optimistic on Gholston. Lewis is a great leader and you are getting yours moneys worth in so many ways. Ray could very well end up in Dallas, but if the money is “close” which I think it will be,the relationship with Lewis and Rex will trump the Boys.

this is just awful, i dont know how anyone can see this as being a good thing. we already let one player dictate the direction of this team and we saw how that went.

ray lewis- awesome LB, one of the best ever, but lets not continue this nonsense of signing players that dont justify their pay.

    this just wreaks of failure!

    Scott –

Go ahead and leave, man. We’ll welcome you back when they make the playoffs.

I think this would be freaking awesome. Favre is better the any of the qb’s the jets have on the roster. How quickly everyone forgets the fact the we could score points with Favre. I dont wanna hear anything about Ratliff’s pre season passes bla bla bla. Favre> the others. Ray Lewis on the jets would be incredible, ny hasn’t had a firey player since LT. This is what the jets need, they have one of the youngest Defenses in the league. His experience will pay huge down the line. Favre sticking around for another season could help develop Ratliff. Plus next years QB draft is very deep. I think this would be fantastic. And with a few restructures this can work. moving a few signing bonus’s to 2010 “uncapped season” Moore, Ellis, and other roster bonus’s could be restructured and make the room. GET IT DONE TANNY!!!!!!

  12. avatar Igs says:

Ray Lewis. Uhhhhh, did I hear a same ol’… Well at least this guy would bring some meanness to the defense, a real edge.

  13. avatar David Hildebrandt says:

Remember what happened when Reggie White came to Green Bay, Lewis could do the same for the Jets and I bet Farve would restructure his contract to see him with the Jets. The Jets are close and now is the time to go for broke.

To quote Pat Kirwan on NFL Radio. “you can’t buy leadership”. The Ray Lewis we get will be unrecognizable from the one roaming the field in Baltimore and his act will not work on this team. Kind of like the guy we had at QB this year. He’s trying to cash in. Move on please nothing to see here.

You’re right, the current Jets players like LC and TJ will sulk and whine to the media if any new leaders dare show up, just like they did to Favre. Hope you’re happy with 4-12 next year with LC and TJ and the quarterback carosel again, cause that’s what it’s going to be.

  16. avatar Ken says:

    speechless.

  17. avatar cbiscuit says:

Favre came in midway through camp, commanded mucho $, got special treatment, and didn’t work hard to learn the playbook. The result – he leads the league in interceptions, was partly responsible for the late season collapse and flies off to Miss. again to leave his team hanging. Whining justified.

This is the ultimate team game. You don’t need a better example than Favre to demonstrate that no one can walk into a locker room and become an instant leader on a new club.

  18. avatar Joe B. says:

LOL @ Ray Lewis talking like he’s already signed.

I hope Mr. T and Woody are smart and don’t bring in either of these geezers.

  19. avatar ramble914 says:

Ray Lewis is not leaving the Ravens, he is the face of their franchise, and will retire there, he’s just posturing. Same goes for Terrell Suggs, they are not letting him go either. That leaves Bart Scott, Baltimore can’t afford to re-sign all three of em, so that leaves Scott odd man out, he should be who we target. He knows Ryan’s system, and will bring the Raven attitude to the Jets.

  20. avatar Reprocity says:

Frank R, Why would Brandon Moore rework his contract? He is one of the most under paid players on the team and maybe even in the league. Without question the RG spot is and has been the OLNY spot on the entire offence that hasn’t been a question mark since he’s got here. I’m not saying he’s great but I woud put him in te top 20.

Lewis and Harris in the middle with Pace and Thomas on the outside. COULD be our best LB core ever.

  22. avatar Doctor K says:

I am with ramble on this one: Baltimore can’t keep all three LBs. Ray will get paid and Suggs will get franchised again. Bart Scott and the kid Leohard should be in our roster come August. Baltimore has a lot of tough decisions to make and they will continue to sacrfice their offense for defense. Look for them to nab a Center in the first round because their current freeagent starter will find a job elswhere.

  23. avatar Harvlis says:

Just what we need, a forty year old QB who just threw 22 Int’s and fell off the table, down the stretch and a 36yr old LB who is just looking for a payday.

We need to get younger, so that we have a future. We don’t need to live in the past. Unknowledgable fans always love to go for the aging superstar. They think, because a player has done well somewhere else, he can come in and bring the magic. Bulldink. It almost never works out. Favre had his run in Green Bay and Lewis had his in Baltimore. It took them years to make it happen in those cities. They are done, over and out.

Many bloggers badmouth our young QB’s. I have only seen good things from all of them. You win as a team. As the cap plays a crucial role in how we can shape the team for the future, the last thing we need is two huge salaries pulling us down forever. Our young QB’s will have the opportunity to show their wares behind a good O-Line with plenty of weapons. If they don’t do well – next year’s QB draft will be much better than this year’s and we can make a move then. I think that, if given the chance — a talented QB will emerge from our existing group.

  24. avatar Geoff says:

Bart Scott sounds good. Good observation. If Favre returns, we have a shot, if not we may lose a ton of 9-6 games.
