Trade for Derek Anderson for a 3rd round pick that escalates to a second if we make the super bowl. Then let all three quarterbacks fight it out. If not get Chris Simms or Byron Leftwich.
The Jets need to work on the defense first and foremost. There are no excellent QB’s out there this year that can fill a starting role. I think Clemens will start unless they pick up a FA.
i think the defense will be just fine with a change in scheme. Lots of talent on that side of the line. As has been mentioned plenty of times, the Ravens’ defense was great even when their starting corners were injured. Belicheat gets great defensive play regardless who is back there. Between our shutdown corner with Revis and a bunch of ok players, we’ll be fine.
Where we REALLY need help is at WR — Cotchery is a good 2nd-3rd WR but Coles really is overmatched trying to be a #1. We need a guy who scares the defense with either height and ball skills (like Vincent Jackson in SD) or speed (like Steve Smith) or preferably someone with both (like Fitzgerald). That will open up SO many things for us. As we saw with the Giants when they lost Plaxico, one playmaker can completely change the way a team is defended. A double on a great WR will equal less guys at the line to stop the run, probably a linebacker alone on Keller, etc.
Re the QB situation, I definitely don’t want Derek Anderson. Big contract, unproven despite his one good year. If we could give up a 5th or later for him, maybe.
no no no no recievers, we are going to be a running offense until clemens or ratliff show us other wise, moreno at 17 would be a steal, same with wells, tht is if we get scott from balt and leohand, filling 2/3 needs on D and then we go CB in 2nd round like smith out of wake or d j moore
I’m all for giving Clemens and Ratliff a shot this year. However just listening to him speak does not make me (and probably the front office) feel like he is confident enough to take over. He should be saying stuff like “I’ve benefited by learning how to win from my predecessors”, “This is my team”, “These are my guys”, “I’m prepared to lead this team”, “We have established chemistry”, “I’m going to prove to the fans that I’m ready and that they were wrong”, “I’m not going anywhere until the front office gets rid of me because I’m the future of this team”, and “I will lead this team to victory”.
San Diego went 14-2 in 2006 w/o a Wide Receiver that could be considered close to a #1. That does not mean I do not think we should try to upgrade our receicing corps. If Clowney can emerge as a deep threat, I truly believe this offense can be much better than the 2008 offense – and that is with KC behind center
This team will not be fine with Clemens at QB. His 8 starts in 2007 yielded the worst QB rating of any starting QB in the NFL. Expecting him to improve to even a competent NFL QB is the classic triumph of hope over experience. I wish I had the database, but I’d be willing to bet that only a very small percentage of 1st year starting QBs with numbers like KC ever went on to be productive NFL QBs. I just can’t emphasize how awful, dismal, terrible and horrendous his numbers were and he didn’t look like an NFL QB..skittish in the pocket and running every time the rush came close. Plus, he does not have prototypical QB size…he’s under 6-2. Why anyone would think that KC should be my beloved Jets’ franchise QB simply escapes me.
remember… wr’s typically don’t make a big contribution until their 3rd year.
better at looking for wr’s in rounds 2 or 3.
plus didnt they make promises regarding coles’ contract? haven’t heard a peep about that yet.
Eli Manning had worse numbers (55.4 passer rating) than KC in his first year. I don’t think he’s great, but he did win a Super Bowl. Matt Hasselbeck had a 70.9 rating in his first year as a starter. I could go on…
Hey Frank, Derek Anderson would not have us on the hook for any of the guaranteed money, that would all hit the Browns cap, if he sucked after one year we could cut him and owe him nothing.
are-tee, everyone brings up Eli, who was the no. 1 pick in the draft. The Giants had to continue letting him play. But, Eli also showed flashes of competence, like the Pittsburgh game. If KC were 6-4, with a bloodline like Eli and the Jets made a significant financial commitment, I’d say then spend whatever it takes to make KC a bona fide QB. Hasselbeck was better…was he the WORST? And, I could go on, too. Ryan Leaf (39), Akili Smith (55.6), Alex Smith (40.8), Joey Harrington (59.9), Cade McNown (66.7), Heath Shuler (59.6), J.P. Losman (64.9).
Also, it’s really a myth that 1st year starters who are good QBs struggle like KC did. You’ll find that most end up with QB ratings that were okay, like over 70…many are over 80, and some even over 90. Plus, KC was a second-year QB, not a rookie. So, comparing him to Eli, who was a rookie, isn’t really fair. How many 2nd year in the NFL and first time starters sucked like KC? The only one that I found was J.P. Losman (64.9)…is that who we want as a model for our franchise QB. Even Brees (to whom KC is often compared) had a decent 1st year as a starter (his second year as a pro)(76.9), he just regressed his third year and broke out his 4th year.
But, my criticism goes way beyond stats. He was an incompetent QB. 5 tds to 10 INTs, skittish in the pocket, too willing to rabbit, etc. He was just terrible out there. And, blaming the OL is an excuse…one that many 1st year starters have, too. Favre, like KC, was a second rounder and took over a 4-12 team in his second year as a pro…all he did was make the Pro Bowl with an 85.3 rating. I’m tired of excuses, I want results.
Kellen Clemens is not an NFL QB regardless or what any of you say. i have never seen a more nervous and flustered qb in the pocket in my lifetime. Although he might be the best qb on the roster right now. Sanchez would be dumb at 17 hes not a first rd qb, more like an early second or real late first. D. Anderson might not be a bad choice especially if it will only take a 3rd rounder to get him. Hes got an absolute cannon for an arm. Although if the jets dont get help at reciever that wouldnt even matter
Clemens sounds like he gets it and knows how to prepare after working with Pennington and Favre. Remember, his body of work that everyone is judging him againt, only consists of a half season’s worth of games behind a horrific offensive line during a dismal year. He is now in the system for three years, has a good O-line in front of him and a solid running attack, with a respectable defense to help keep the score within reason game in and game out. I’m all for giving him and Ratliff a shot in camp.
Kellen showed alot of competence in that Baltimore game(think Rex forgot?…me either) AND he did it behind a GARBAGE offensive line. If everyone says he looked skittish in the pocket, thats because he was RUNNING for HIS LIFE all the time.
i saw on espn todd mcmoron has the jets taken sanchez at 17…
ok thats great so instead of having just three inexperienced nfl qbs we now have 4…. we BETTER NOT TAKE A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND….
we have needs at cb and wr that need to be addressed as well as an inside lb which will hopefully be filled by bart scott….
receiver or safety …qb’s are much better next yr….colt 2010
Trade for Derek Anderson for a 3rd round pick that escalates to a second if we make the super bowl. Then let all three quarterbacks fight it out. If not get Chris Simms or Byron Leftwich.
JEFFDOLINI,
Thats the better option. I would hate to see a new QB just coz we dont have stability on that spot.
We need to find a way to get Malcolm Jenkins in the draft. Trade up into the top 10 and try and get a book-end for Revis.
If he drops to #17 – K. Moreno (RB) is a steal!
The Jets need to work on the defense first and foremost. There are no excellent QB’s out there this year that can fill a starting role. I think Clemens will start unless they pick up a FA.
Clemens, with our running game, will be just fine.
Get him a real #1 WR (not Coles) and Clemens will be fine
i think the defense will be just fine with a change in scheme. Lots of talent on that side of the line. Thats one way to get the team, the fans, and the organization to feel confident in you, just to get the job. Then you need to prove it!!!
go with the qbs we already have.tall receiver like kenny britt in the 2nd and cb in the first .

SackDance, what if a guy was 6′4″ but had a massive forehead (LOL)
DSmizzle, I’d be concened with a 3″ forehead and an ostrich neck, so his release point makes him 5-10.
… and sausage fingers …

KC was playing behind a terrible OL.
Hey Frank, Derek Anderson would not have us on the hook for any of the guaranteed money, that would all hit the Browns cap, if he sucked after one year we could cut him and owe him nothing.

ps…what round was Kerry collins drafted in?…..what round was Doug Williams drafted in?….Tom Brady?….Kurt Warner?….etc etc etc
Kerry Collins was a 1st-round pick.
