Link: Prisco on Leftwich and the Jets

by Bassett on February 17th, 2009 at 7:30 am

This is why Pete Prisco gets paid the big bucks. In an article on Byron Leftwich and his eagerness to find a new home, he wrote this about Leftwich, the Jets and Jets fans.

Why wouldn’t one of the quarterback-depleted teams — see New York Jets — take a shot on Leftwich? Would a Jets fans [sic] rather have Brett Ratliff, Kellen Clemens or Eric [sic] Ainge starting instead of Leftwich? I doubt it.

Seeing as Jets fans chose Brett Ratliff over Tom Brady by a margin of 14% (wait … seriously??) in a recent Daily News Poll, Prisco is dead wrong, but I think only on the count of assuming Leftwich as the annointed starter.

Personally, I would love for the Jets to find a player like Leftwich, but with the purpose of not necessarily starting him, but to be a safety net should the youngsters crumble.

Leftwich is one of the names I’m interested in when it comes to bringing in a QB. Look at what he did for the steelers as a backup..Big Ben goes down and they kept it moving.

I would like to get Leftwich, not as anointed starter or backup…but as a QB able to compete for the starting job along with the rest.

I understand Clemens Ratty and Ainge are all guys with upside who deserve a shot, let them compete. Look at how the Cardinals and Titans succeeded when they let the veteran backup compete with the youngsters for the starting spot as opposed to just bringing them in.

I would love to see someone like Leftwich or Anderson in here. They would give us some insurance, but they are not so big of a name to automatically be guaranteed the starting spot as Warner and Garcia would. It all depends on how much Leftwich is in demand and how much he would cost. And obviously we would have to trade for Anderson.

I agree, we need a face for the franchise, we had not had our own since the possibility of Chad, but the enjoyment only lasted a few seasons before he was injury prone, not his fault, it just happened that way, having Clemens and Ratliff compete and one be the successor is what we want and need, we don’t want to go through this every year, Leftwich is good, but he would not truly be a Jet, he would only be a fill in.

omg please not leftwich…i rather get browning nagle back

Mangini will trade Anderson, but he will be in high demand, Mangini will want a back up for him and a late pick, so who would go?

Having Leftwich come in and compete for the job would raise the bar a bit. His presence would push both BR and KC. Also would add stability as a back-up. If he doesn’t cost much. And what happened to Anderson? 2 years ago he was a pro bowler, now…..? I am rooting for Ratliff.

I believe that Leftwich has had three or four ankle injuries, over his short career. Do we really have to waste a year of Clemens, Ratliff, or Ainge, to see Leftwich go down in the eigth or ninth game.

We have more than enough talent.

Noooooo. No Leftwich, no Garcia, no Anderson. If we’re going to trade for a quarterback or sign a free agent, he can’t just be a placeholder, and he can’t just be a mediocre player. He’s got to be the guy who puts you over the top, and someone who’s going to be around for more than a year or two.

In other words, he’s got to be a difference maker. Leftwich doesn’t qualify.

If we don’t think Ratliff or Clemens can cut it, then let’s draft a quarterback.

Leftwich = Slooooowest Deeeeelivery Eeeeeeever. Keep him away.

The Jets need to give Clemens or Ratliff a fair shot. How many games is that? 3? 4? 5? If the initial starter fails, the reigns should be handed to the other of the two.

Hopefully, at least one of the two play well. If not, give Ainge a try for a few games and then look for a QB in 2010.

What a shocker, another writer pleading for another ‘name’ QB. If these people ran the NFL, no name players would never develop into ‘name’ players.

Draft a QB , Cut Ainge, and run the ball. Also just keep 1 kicker and 1 punter. We do not need so many QB’s or K’s.

Is it just me or are all jets fans realizing that year after year the team is “rebuilding”? I mean seriously I cannot stand to see another rebuilding year. Yes Favre was a mistake setting us back another 2-3 years, but why not look towards making a big trade??? Or even drafting Sanchez? If it’s truly another rebuilding year then we should rebuild with a franchised QB, not Clemens, Ratliff, or Ainge, but either with a draft or even Derek Anderson.
