Roster News: Jets Resign Wright, Add CB, Further Salary Cap Clarification
A couple of roster moves to pass along:
The Jets have re-signed special teams monster Wallace Wright to a one-year contract extension for 535K and have also signed CB Marquis Cole to a minimum level (310K) one year deal.
The undrafted twenty five year old Cole is very raw but has incredible speed (reportedly in the 4.18 to 4.25 range for the forty) and has been on several practice squads, with time spent at Oakland, Tennessee and New Orleans.
Wright has been one of the best special teamers in the league for the past three years after the Jets picked him up as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina.
In cap news, Hutch admits he was starting to doubt his own story, so he sought confirmation from a league official who unequivocally confirms that the Jets are about 15m under the cap, with the only unknown being whether the cap will actually be slightly less than $124m (presumably because of the final cap adjustment re: bonuses).
…but it’s not about who’s right and who’s wrong…

Verr nice … this gives the jets the ability to
1) Sign a few free agents (depending on how marquee they go) to start and/or add depth (ILB, S & QB potentially)
2) Re-up a player like Leon Washington (supposing he’s willing) before he hits free agency next year.
3) Potentially give the Jets space set aside (thus no more cuts or restructures) to sign their rookies to fair market deals.
PS — Thanks to biebs who sent this to me, but I was unable to post in time …
wow that guy is fast.
sadly speed isn’t the only thing that makes a good football player
Maybe Hutch should do a little homework before running a story?? Whatever…..like I said before I trust 2 people with my cap data…Mr T and Bent
I pity the fool who trusts me with their money!
drew what do you mean, he’s the one the whole time who has said the jets have a vast amount of money to play with?
What the hell, a 1 year deal, that means we gonna be doing this again next year, why not just sign him to a 3 year deal, and I’m still waiting on the news of the Ratliff and Clowney resigning
nyckage,
Ratliff has apparently received a 2 year extension already, although it has not been widely reported.
Yeah, Drew, Hutch hasn’t made any mistakes. I’m right with him. The difference between the numbers we know about and the position as confirmed by Hutch is obviously unannounced restructuring of contracts (probably Pace and Rhodes).
kage – Cimini reported that the Jets quietly resigned Ratty for two years last August, but the players association has no record of this, so for now that’s unconfirmed. We’ll give you the news as soon as it’s official.
Bassett – I’ve come to the conclusion that the Jets don’t need ANY cap space this year (and maybe not next year) to re-sign Leon, because they can extend his current contract so that the money kicks in at the end of the 2010 season.
AKA……Drew -
What are you talking about? Hutch had it right all along and only triple-checked because other people have had varying numbers and because idiots like Mike Lombardi are insisting that the Jets are a billion dollars over the cap.
I’ve posted this several time before but i’m going to post it again. The Jets NEED to re-sign Leon Washington NOW! He has been our team MVP practically every year, he wins games for us. Now its time to reward him with a new contract, I’d say up to 5 million a year is more than fair. If he hits the open market we will never be able to retain him. GET THE DEAL DONE NOW MR T.
Oh, and re-sign Revis while youre at it
Asomugha just resigned with the Raidaahhhsss. So cross that one off the list!
My Bad….Apparently Hutch got this one right….lol
Good looking out boys….Thanks for quickly correcting me…lol
I think the JETS are trying to save Cap room to sign LEBRON in 2010…..Sorry I usually take this blog seriously LOL
no need to resign rellerev yet.. they have two more years and then two buyback years after that … so basically he can’t see FA until 2013
Again, my reason for not signing another CB was proved with Ashomuga’s contract: $45.3M over 3 (!!!) years with $28.5M guaranteed. With the holes at ILB, SS, RDE and WILL (plus DL depth), signing Ashomuga would have made the CBs great at the cost of the rest of the defense. No need to test the CBs if you can run the ball or dink and dunk to the TEs and RBs.
Bassett, thanks for the clarification, but as you can tell by my user name I am a HUGE Revis fan and I wanna see him retire in green and white. Good to knowhe’l be around unil atleast 2013.
JesusRevis
I agree 100% my man. I am also a huge Revis fan, and have been since his days at Pitt, and would like nothing more to see him retire in Green and White. Also lets give Leon some dam money, he definitly deserves it.
I trust Hutch’s cap #s. I would still like to trade coles for lito shephard and then sign or draft a tall speedy WR. Nicks from UNC would be an excellent 2nd round choice.
I like Nicks too, but i’d be surprised if hes around in the 2nd round.
Well, I had predicted 10m a year with 30m in guarantees for Nnamdi, but I am shocked that the contract is so short. Why not just give him a longer deal that pays the same money through the first three years?
I wonder if that was the team’s or the player’s decision.
Could it be the economic climate that made the team keep it that short (but if so, why not make the contract longer as mentioned above because they can still get out of it after three years).
Alternatively, has Nnamdi demanded this so that he can get another big payday under the new CBA…and if so are we going to see many similar deals which are shorter but with higher than expected non-guaranteed money?
By the way, the Raiders were listed along with the Jets as being in cap jail in Lombardi’s article, so how on earth will they manage to afford this? (Unless, perhaps, Lombardi was wrong)…
Could Lombardi possibly be wrong? Oh my GOD!!!!
What is this fascination with and overvaluing of Lito Sheppard? He’s a mediocre cornerback, and we’ve got plenty of those already. Plus I’ve been reading people wanting to trade a 1st rounder or Coles for him? Excuse me? The Eagles couldn’t GIVE Sheppard away last offseason, now you want to ship a first rounder or Coles to them? Um, someone tell these people it’s not 2006.
Joe B – I havent seen anyone suggest we trade a 1st rounder for Sheppard. He is better than a mediocre cornerback, and he would be the 2nd best corner on our roster.
