Breaking News: One Moore Starter to be Released
Posted on February 20th, 2009 by Bent
Hutch reveals that Brandon Moore is to be released by the Jets, a move he says will wipe another $7m off the salary cap because he was due to receive a $7m roster bonus (although Jason’s figures from nyjetscap.com were $5m).
Moore is expected to be highly sought after in the free agent market, but the Jets obviously thought his cap number was too high to justify keeping him on the roster.

now why the hell would they do this. B moore is a good-soild LG. he has great cemistry with the rest of the line. we are being pound-fooish here
+ he’s only 28 year old. I just don’t get this move
i dont like this move at all…didnt we run the ball most effectively on this side??
This is retarded.
Ughhhhhhhhhhh. Why? I understand the bonus thing, but guess what? He deserves it. He was with the team for a long time, and before Faneca got here was the only lineman with a mean streak. Teaming up with Woody, he made up half of a very good power-blocking tandem on the right side. Someone will need to do some really good spinning of this story in order for me to accept this as a good move (because, honestly, who is left in FA that we need this extra $ to sign? We only have one starting ILB spot). And I don’t see him resigning for less when he could’ve just restructured. Jusssssssssst when I think we’re gettin our act together, this happens.
Clearly some Ravens defenders are inbound- we’re clearing space for them. While the organization should keep the Pete Kendall fiasco in mind, guard should be one of the easiest spots to address in the draft or free agency.
Hope you’re right Seanmac. We just messed with our greatest strength
I am so sick of the Jets.
If they go an sign a bunch of Ravens players, they are once again trying to copy a team.
this would be a flat out horrible move!! All it does is create another hole onsted of plug one up!!!!!
dumbest move ever, add RG to the list of offseason needs, atleast you could have traded him and got a 2rd rd or possible a 2nd rd pick for him
this is a terrific move IF we get a superstar o.lineman to replace him…i have been saying for weeks now that we should be improving our line from very good to elite status
We will have to look elsewhere to plug the hole;
Duke Preston of the Bills, Elton Brown of the Cardinals, Jahri Evans of the Saints, Tyson Clabo of the Falcons, Kynan Forney of the Charges and Chris Kemoeato of the Steelers.
WOWWIE WOW, WOW!!! The Baker release was understandable, but letting moore go, after we finally put together one of the best O-Lines in the league, is BAFFOONERY!!! All I can say is, we better be “BIG” players in the FA market, and in the draft!!!
This is what I M to the I is going to do. I’m going to sign Bart Scott and sweet talk the hell out of julius peppers and the panthers or D Nabb and the phili eagles. Put up my first round pick and Vernon Gholston to try and pry either Peppers or McNabb. We need a KILLER defense or stability @ the QB spot with star power for 5-6 years.
Why can”t we dream if this was the case. HTe same way the Knikcs are clearing money to make a run at Lebron and or Wade, WHY CANT THE JETS DO IT. SHOW SOME G-DDAMN CREATIVITY. LET US, THE FANS DREAM, FEEL MORE CONFIDENCE OF MEETING PRESIDENT OBAMA.
this isnt offical or anything, hutch’s source is a guy who apparently has inside knowledge of the teams moves… we’ll kno later if this is for real, i highly doubt it, moore might have been the best G for us last yr
Well tazzerlrik, he couldn’t have been that great if you don’t even know what position he plays.
But in any case, people shouldn’t whine about bringing in a bunch of Ravens players. It wouldn’t be a bad franchise to copy, but we’ve yet to bring a single Raven player in as of yet. Just wait until it all plays out. I mean, who knows. It’s very possible that we may end up re-signing Moore anyway after he tests the market.
I recall that Terry Bradway and Mr.T made the decision that Anthony Clement could be an NFL lineman. I hope that the brain trust does a better job when they attempt to replace a solid, if not outstanding player.
is this really that bad of a move guard is one of the easiest positions to fill as it is the easiest position on the line to play so how bout we just trust rex in the decisions he is making so far im sure they have a plan
Why can’t we trade some of these players instead of cutting them?
Guard is important. It is vital.
JayM,
No one will make a trade before the roster bonuses are due.
Fact of the matter is moore is the best option right now at his position, bonus or no bonus…and if you ask me, one of the best in the league, so this move will never make sense to me and no one will be able to convince me otherwise.
sure its vital but 7 million dollars in a roster bonus is a lot of money to give out to a guard
We don’t have a single O-Line back-up and they are getting rid of a starter. They trained this guy to play RG, he has the best season of his career, and instead of negotiating or trading him — they toss him into the gutter. Sounds like another brilliant front-office move, like keeping Schottenheimer.
Namath definitely made a deal with the devil to win that Superbowl. Jet fans have been cursed since then. We take abuse, even in the off-season.
is it possible to cut him and then resign him so he doesn’t get his 7 million dollar roster bonus?
mabey just mabey favre changed his mind already and they need to free up 13 mil right away!
unless there’s some kind of agreement to sign him back, I’m really not happy with this move. Why is Rex gonna go talk about how good our O-Line is and then they go and cut our longest tenured player.
….wait, is this a rebuilding year for the Jets?
@Dan – yes, it’s possible, if they resign him to a restructured agreement, however, he’s a free agent now and can test the FA waters. Unless, of course, he agreed to take a cut and will sign a new contract within the next day or two.
Davo
man davo i rly hope so, if not this is a rly bad start to rex’s start, kinda hypocritacal as he talks bout running the ball, and then cuts our best running blocking OL
thanks i think that is a definite possibility
terrible move. yes moore was due a big bonus BUT he has a reasonable contract for the next couple of years. stupid, stupid move. here are the numbers from jetscap.com
Moore can be paid roster bonuses of $200,000(2007), $620,000(2008), $5,000,000(2009), and $2,000,000(2011). Base salaries for Moore are $1,060,555(2004), $455,000(2005), $770,000(2006), $1,800,000(2007), $1,000,000(2008), $620,000(2009), $760,000(2010), $2,000,000(2011), and 2,750,000(2012).
essentially we had a very good right guard, 28 years old, life long Jet, for a total of approx 15 mill thru 2012, and an avg of about 2 mil against the cap from 2010 thru 2012, sheer stupidity to release this guy. shortsighed and dumb.
Wait a minute…Woody DOES have the money to meet the cap, right? I mean, that’s not what the cuttings about, is it?
Davo
my guess they are falling in love with Herman Johnson, the man is 6′8″ 382 lbs. still i’d keep moore. get him back, c’mon
Totally agree with Liam…his cap number was high for next year, but after that was very managable. This is a terrible move unless they plan on resigning him again for a longer term deal with less of a cap hit for 09
is this even a credible source… and yea lets hope they resign him b/c outside of duke and the G out of LSU there is no one in the draft and only dahl in FA would be an upgrade anyone else would be a downgrade
you guys are crazy, smart move, look at his salary compared to other guards in the league. He was going to get to much money.
everybody calm down, moore was the weakest link in our oline
he might have been the weak link but who r we gonna get to replace him????
If this is true, I wonder if the Jets now have plans to move Damien Woody back inside to right guard where he’s spent the majority of his career and then go after a true right tackle…
I’m a fan of Moore, but he is only a guard. And this isn’t a repeat of the Kendal situation, because Kendal was a much better player than Moore was, and the Jets also traded him either during or right before training camp if I remember correctly, way too late to find an adequate replacement. The Jets still have all of free agency and the draft to find a replacement for Moore.
Moore was not the weakest link in our line if anything it was faneca… We ran the ball great to the right side, leading rushed in the AFC…. remember Lil Leon breaking big gains when he ran up the middle?? what hole was wide open??? I dont like the move at all and they wouldnt just cut him and resign him they would just restructure the contract internally.
And actually, we should be looking to the Ravens for our solution. They have a free agent in Jason Brown that is considerably better than Moore and would be more than worth the contract.
well the draft is rly deep at Tackle this year if we move woody make inside where he used to play
I like this move. moore was held up by being sandwiched between mangold and woody. 2 years ago he was probably the 2nd worst of all the lineman. it was pathetic watching his fat ass run around like an idiot
I’ll reserve judgement until all the moves (cuts, FA signings and draft) are completed, but this is a very risky move. The O-line is the most solid unit on the entire team. One that we don’t have to worry about at all. Moore was better than solid. I think he actually outplayed Faneca most of the year. Granted Faneca may pull better, but Faneca gave up more sacks and Moore opened up bigger holes, which resulted in bigger plays (longer runs). See Leon’s big runs as proof.
I really want to know what acquisition they have in mind and if it is really worth breaking up the chemistry of what is supposed to be the foundation of this teams philoshy next year….running the ball and playing great D. At least with Moore, we knew we had the running the ball aspect down pat.
GUESS WHAT. LETS LOOK @ WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE @ SEASONS START.
i dont know what there trying to do with all this cap room unless there trying to bring in jim leonard ray lewis and bart scott.. hopefully we dump coles and pick up a different reciever.. housh boldin or ocho cinco
I DON’T LIKE TANNENBAUM NOR WOODY.
Not in love with this move but he ius just a RG. It is the easiest position to fill on the OL. Looks like the fun is about to begin
First the jets have a good core of 2nd string OL, second it could be “if” it is true that he is cut, it could be that they will resign him with a new contract, long term, and get in a better position with the cap in order to sign the FA’s they think will be available on the defensive side of the ball. The Jets are not going to leave themselves vunerable at the QB position with a weak line, and yes Woody could be going back to his original position and the Jets draft a OL if all the defensive needs have been met. Lets just wait and see where it all leads and revisit this subject before preseason.
Jets only have TWO, thats right TWO backup offensive lineman. Now they have one. And if you want to include practice squad its 3. Thats not exactly wat id call depth.
If he really was cut, it means that the Jets could not reach an agreement on restrucuring his contract. Judging by what free agent guards have gotten lately, he won’t be back.
He will be wearing a Brown’s uniform next season.
I wouldn’t be suprised if the Jets went after either Duke Robinson or Herman Johnson in the draft. They could start at RG this year and then mold them into LG’s once Faneca is gone.
Well this was a shot in the dark.
Although I am not sure about this move, a 7 mil roster bonus for a RG is kinda high. I agree with earlier comments about the possibilty of moving Woody to RG and finding a RT. It is still way toooo early to judge the roster when free agency did not even start yet. In Rex I trust.
I had wondered why the Jets were kicking Andre Smith’s tires.
Jake, you make a good point Mangold an D’brick are still young and with a younger guard in place maybe the Jets line will look even better in a few years.
you do not do this without a plan in place…
Things are getting interesting.
Same ol’ Jets…
Let’s draft a run first coach and get rid of our best lineman that developed in our system. Smart. Why haven’t we been to the Super Bowl in 40 years??????
Same ol F#@*ing Jets.
Obviously the jets have a plan. We have a wohle lot of money to spend so im retty confident we’ll get a replacement,
We had a whole lot of cap money to spend last year. And the Jets have obviously had many plans. I have’t seen one yet.
You wanna know the plan. Reference the Pete Kendall situation. You got a right guard, doing a workman’s job. Wants to get paid like a workman. They fire him. offensive line gets ran over all season. They pay a crap load for a veteran that the steelers don’t even want anymore. I’m sick of this crap.
Unreal…if Cimini’s number of ~$17 mil in cap space was correct before we released Baker…why is this a necessity?
I just don’t get it, there’s no restructured contract that can keep him with the team?
Cimini reported that they wanted to get Moore to restructure because of the pending $7M, but he wouldn’t figuring if he forced the Jets to cut him he’d be looking at a pretty good pay day in FA.
he’ll probably get alot more than $7m upfront. pretty much a no-brainer on Moore’s part.
got to say, i was dead wrong. thought the they would be up against the cap and there wouldn’t be many changes. as usual, not all the moves will work out but have to like the aggressiveness in remaking the roster and not expecting automatic improvement of a 9-7 year.
is this a reliable source? what’s hutch’s track record?
because this seems like a terrible move to me. the o-line was the single strongest unit on the team. and for all of you who are saying it’s so easy to find a guard, i’d like to point your attention to 2007. it was real easy to replace kendall, right?
Igs why don’t you stay rooting for one team then and stick with the Giants.
neauone,
“The Jets have a good core of 2nd string OL.” This is the NY Jets Blog. What team are you talking about?
Hanger,
You would think there is a plan. After they kept Schottenheimer and Sutton — I am not that sure. Every time this blog talks about us cutting a player, everybody thinks they will end up in Cleveland. If this doesn’t work out — Tannenbaum will end up in Cleveland.
swizzle, why don’t you spend more energy on figuring out why this team can’t stop creating its own holes instead of using it to hate on me.
nooooooooooooooooooooooooo………………….nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…………………………….no? whatever our 09 season is sunk anyway…………rookie coach……..rookie qb…….maybe we can open up the new stadium with a winning record not this year………we can beat the pats at home and pretend its like our superbowl
been there… done that
As part of the PSL process we we will sign ray lewis…. this org is a joke… be wise and save your money
maybe they’re making room to bring in scott, haynesworth and 1 of the above mentioned guards hitting the FA market…if this is the case…im all for the move…think about it…keep ellis and and build a monster defense…just my thoughts
maybe we might have enough to get leonard or bell…
Sometimes I think most cyber GM’s in training miss the most important HUMAN element. When the real GM’s are nego with the player and agent it’s “like look all you have to do is come in here and show and prove you have what it takes over a 2-4 year period and come the 5th year you’ll get a GREAT roster bonus,Because shucks you would have really earned it”Yeah right.C’mon people B.Moore more than earned it.From D-line in college, undrafted FA,NFL europe,Jets pratice squad all while learning how to become a O-lineman.Then a sit at the table. The grown folks TABLE not that kiddie anymore. You all here would’ve been waiting for that money you Smith&Barney the ole fashion way by EARNING every dime of it.Now you want to pull my chair from the table.Everyone stop take a deep breath count to 10.Now tell me how all of a sudden money management is fair..Yeah I know, well Dax.I never thought of it that way.
Okay, what’s out there in free agency that Jets feel they need to unload Moore?
Why are we we diggin’ holes instead of pluggin’ them?
I don’t see a better free agent guard and we’ve got zero depth, so Jets must be thinking draft. Therefore, I’ll further deduce, Jets must have free agents in mind to plug ILB, CB, SS.
Hopefully, we’re picking up Sexy Rexy’s Ex’s!!!
I might be the minority here but i actually like this move i mean he was good but did anyone think maybe damien woody slides inside and we go and get ourselves one of those offensive tackles in the draft the way its looking they say andre smith is sliding due to the fact that he doesnt even have an agent or started preparing for this draft they said on nfl network so with his stock sliding i could see them looking ot maybe in round 1 and i gues it would go along with Rex’s philosophy an all weather team woody belongs inside anyway…
…Again, Jason Brown is infinitely better than Moore.
woud love if they got Duke Robinson in round 2
Move Woody to RG and lets pick up a rookie RT in the draft!
Andre Smith? Whoa. I never even considered that could be a possibility.
One of my favorite college players to watch of all time.
“is this a reliable source? what’s hutch’s track record?”
It remains to be seen, but Hutch has been honest and open about his sources and information throughout the process and clearly isn’t the type of guy to run a story he doesn’t believe.
Hayneswrth? are you guys kidding me. If this goes down it will prove to me that the ruts the Jets have been stuck in the last 40 years is a permanent one. wtf???
If last year taught us anything, it’s that the Jets are not afraid to make the big moves. Look for the Jets to sign Albert Haynesworth, Bart Scott, and possibly a CB or Safety. Moore can be replaced pretty easily.
I am with the few who never was that impressed with Moore, I think he is mediocre at best, and as some have suggested, a better scenario may be to move Woody inside and find a RT.
But, sinse nothing has happened yet, I’m going to reserve judgement until I see how it all pans out.
Again…I dont love the move but Moore is he plays the easiest position to replace on the OL. He does not protect the blind side and is a pretty good run blocker. Seriously we can find a guy that can do just as good as a job for probably half the money…..Again. I dont love this move but the Jet bashing and overreaction is hilarious. We can move Woody to RG and get a RT or go get a big time run blocking RG in the draft….Calm down boys!!
Just catching back up with things … was on the road last night … I guess he’s totally unwilling to restructure his deal, meaning he knew free agency was a better choice for him. I hope the can re-sign him, if not, it’s a stupid move.
bad move in my opinion … if they are as far under the cap as hutch seems to think they are … which would lead me to believe that his numbers are flat out wrong
Cutting Brandon Moore is a mistake. If they sign Ray Lewis, I’m gonna scream.
This will surely add more intruige to the jets FA and/or draft day. Now we can throw in RG/RT as a major need.
If this is true and Moore is cut, I would be shocked if any of the top 4 OL prospects (J. Smith, A, Smith, E. Monroe, and M Oher) would be available at 17. I think the Skins at 13 are worried all could be gone. Couple guys should go at the back end of 1st round(Britton/Unger???).
I would assume they are eyeing up a couple lower cost UFA options but should they not land one, they will need to draft a RG/RT replacement within the first two rounds. No one wants another “Bender” experience.
Bad move if they cut him
Basset- I couldn’t agree more. I like it when you express your opinion. Must be tough being a diplomat and a fan.
I just dont get it. This makes me sad
