News: Jets to Meet with Agents of Barton and Coles

by Bassett on February 21st, 2009 at 5:21 pm

According to Hutch, it seems that some more decisions for Jets players might be made this weekend. This attached at the bottom of Hutch’s report on Brandon Moore:

The Jets are scheduled to meet with the agents for WR Laveranues Coles and unrestricted free agent LB Eric Barton this weekend in Indianapolis.

The decision on Barton is more evident based on the talk about players like Bart Scott. I honestly have no idea on which way the team will resolve any outstanding contract issues with Laveranues Coles, but it seems like someone thinks something needs to be addressed that’s not been addressed.

PS, if you care enough, you can watch the Combine, live on NFL.com.

    What does this mean?

  2. avatar jim says:

maybe we cut or trade colesy to create cap space to keep brandon moore and sign bart scott and jim leonard….think about it…there’s a deep run of wideouts in the draft…maybe if we keep moore, bring in scott and leonard we take a wr at 17…or in the second round…we have cotch, clowney, stuckey, smith, keller and leon washington to catch passes….coles is expendable

  3. avatar Mike says:

I don’t care what they do, but i Don’t want to see Coles in a Jets jersey when the season starts

  4. avatar trevor says:

    jim,
that sounds really good for the jets and itll open opportunities for young WRs to step in. Coles is what 31 32 we dont need him anymore at 5’11″ we got speedier guys than him and its time we look at a WR corpse along the lines of

    Cotchery
    Clowney
    Stuckey
    Smith
    Wright
    Draft Pick like Harvin/Britt/Nicks

    Marcus Henry???

  5. avatar trevor says:

interest in crabtree at all anyone???

  6. avatar FreemanMcNeil says:

Let Coles walk. He’s a been bitter and disgruntled at various times during his Jets career. He cost us S. Moss by going to Washington for the $, and then wanting to come back. Just like it was with Chad, it’s time to cut ties and go in a new direction. Baker is out, so let’s dump the other troublemaker.

  7. avatar Bent says:

First of all, Jim, we can’t cut Coles because of the $7m cap hit that would bring.

What this is about is this:

First Coles – when they guaranteed the last two years, the Jets promised Coles that if he stopped complaining about his contract situation they would either offer him a long term extension or allow him to seek a trade. So this is all about that. Previous reports indicated the extension route was unlikely, so they are probably just setting the parameters for Coles to seek a trade. The team that trades for him would either have to pay him $6m or give him an extension with at least $6m guaranteed (I think at least $6m in the first year but not sure exactly how the contract was set up).

As far as Barton goes, he is a popular guy in the clubhouse and although he was never a great fit as a 3-4 MIKE, if the team will be playing some 4-3 he could still be useful as a 4-3 OLB that could backup whoever they get in to play the MIKE role in a pinch. He would probably need to be cheap though. 2-3m a year? No harm in kicking the tires.

  8. avatar droseatwork says:

If barton leaves what will I do with my jersey???

  9. Dont worry droseatwork Gholsten might go back to his #50 college jersey number……Lets hope Ryan gets VG going this year

  10. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

    Wow.
In just two months Coach Ryan has done more to better this team then Eric did in three years. With the exception of last year because we all know Mike T and Woody were responsible for the off season building.

Please if there is a Football GOD, I hope Mike T was smart enough to place some sort of back door release clause in Coles contract, and that Laveranues was dumb enough to over look it when resigning.

I hope the cry baby gets the ax more then anyone including “Mr I will help the other team win” #44 James Ihedigbo!

Come on Mike Work your magic, get rid of this bum at no cost to the Jets!!

  11. avatar JesusRevis says:

I’m not as quick to dump coles and some of you are, but if they can trade him for any type of fair value I guess i’d be ok with it. Either way, without Coles the Jets WR corps is weak.

trevor – of course everyone would be interested in crabtree, but hes one of the elite players in the draft and will likely be a top 5 pick. Unless youre suggesting the Jets trade up multiple picks to get him, its not happening.

  12. avatar pkpiazza says:

lets say the Moore rumors are true… wat are we looking at FA for a RT id we move woody inside or a RG if we keep woody outside, also who would be avalaible in the draft… we def need to get a CB in the first 2 rounds, maybe a RB if moreno is available he would be a steal, but if we need a G/T we cant get our needs

  13. avatar JesusRevis says:

There are NO good WR’s in free agency outside of Housh, so i the Jets cut Coles they would almost be forced to use a high draft choice on a WR. I want Nicks, and DEFINITELY not Harvin.

  14. avatar JesusRevis says:

pkpiazza – I doubt the Jets would cut Moore without some type of plan to replace him. Lets hope they already have a replacement in mind.

  15. Cutting Coles would be cap suicide…If we can get good value in a trade then fine but he is still a good WR is this league…..keeping him is not the end of the world. I only want Barton back as a backup to B Scott and D Harris.

  16. avatar pkpiazza says:

revis, i rly rly hope tey have someone to replace him, but tht person better not be on the roster now i.e. hunter, turner, b/c then we just downgraded out greatest strength and then we potentially lose running the ball so good

  17. avatar Igs says:

Barton? Don’t talk about Barton! Barton???

  18. avatar johnl says:

revis we were just talking about the o.line the other day. i hate to say i told you so but i told you so :)
you do know your football though so don’t take that the wrong way

  19. avatar Davo says:

AH! Now I get it! It’s NOT a rebuilding year….cut regular and solid contributors so that money can be spent on veteran (read, the over 30 crowd) players. Stick them all together, bake for 6 months and hope that the whole thing meshes into an instant superbowl berth.

    Davo

  20. avatar jetchick says:

Lets see here….Coles had 70 receptions for 850 yards and 7 TD catches in 08 . He played hurt all season and if Brett did not hurt his arm probably would have easily had over 1000 yards.

Do you guys that constantly bash Coles actually watch the games? He also make tough catches over the middle….what exactly would you have him do to consider him a good receiver. He is not a burner or deep threat…so what. He wins games for us.

  21. avatar IRA says:

I would love them to bring Barton back along with siging Scott. No way they can cut LC. They would take a 7 million cap hit. The Eagles i heard might want to trade Sheppard. Wonder if the Jets would trade LC straight up for Sheppard?

  22. avatar david i says:

Coles did nothing special last year. As a matter of fact, there were some games he completely disappeared.

Also, a lot of guys are down on Percy Harvin, but this kid makes big plays. What’s wrong with having another playmaker to go along with Leon?

I’ll take any of the top 5 WR’s coming out this year. Some if they fall into our laps and others if we slide down and pick up another pick.

Tomorrow’s combine is a big day for Jets fans to see how well Darius Hayward-Bey, Nicks and Britt run, as either one could very well become a Jet.

  23. avatar JesusRevis says:

johnl – what do you mean?

  24. avatar JesusRevis says:

I dont know what you “told me so” about, but I said I didnt want the Jets to cut Moore, and I’m disapointed about it.

  25. avatar swizzle81 says:

LC for Lito in a heartbeat.

  26. avatar raf0173 says:

Coles palyed with a bad leg all year. Each and every year he plays hurt gives his all out and then gets a bad rap for wanting the same in the offseason from the team. As for Moore, he’s not worth 7 million a year! Plain and simple, he’s good but not 7 million good! GO JETS!!!!

  27. avatar jetchick says:

Coles had 70 receptions for 850 yards and 7 TD catches in 08 . He played hurt all season and if Brett did not hurt his arm probably would have easily had over 1000 yards.

Look…numbers don’t lie. JC had 71 receptions for 858 yards and only 5 TD’s…yet there is no outcry to get rid of him….why exactly is that?

Oh I forgot some of you just don’t like LC’s off field behavior. So every time his name comes up you want to get rid of the guy. A former team captain that plays hurt and year in and year out either leads his team in receptions or comes close…OK JC had one more catch then did LC in 08…big deal.

  28. avatar flyboy says:

lc for lito would be good very good

  29. avatar johnl says:

i was saying the jets should replace either brandon moore or damien woody and put a superstar o.lineman in there to bring our status on the o.line from very good to elite…you were looking at a different direction saying our o.line was fine and we should focus more on cb and lb and wr. From what i read in newsday it does not look look like anything is set in stone anyway. i heard they in fact did not cut moore and that they are only sitting down to restructure his contract

  30. avatar Bent says:

Interesting, johnl. Restructuring makes the most sense as far as I can see. Maybe they floated the possibility to Hutch to let Moore know they won’t back down.

jetchick – I am with you as far as people’s issues with Coles are concerned. They are overblown and by and large he has been a gamer.

But come on, suggesting they should be calling for Cotchery to be cut?

He’s younger, less injury prone, earns less money, would actually cost them $3m to cut and was the NFLs most efficient wideout in the first 11 games of last season with no dropped catches whatsoever. You don’t cut guys like that.

  31. avatar dcjetsfan says:

I do not want to see Barton back on this team unless it is at a bargin and for depth. He should not be a starter at this point. A little like David Barrett, I am surprised he lasted this long as a Jet.

Whether Coles is able to get a trade out of New York, or if he plays out his fnal year, the Jets need to be looking for a #1 WR either in FA or this draft……Housh or Bodin are not great replacements this year. Braylon, Jennings, and Marshall are FA in 2010 but who know if these guys would hit the open market. So IMO , they should drop back in the first round or jump up in second and target a top prospect w/ good size and speed. Bey? Britt?

  32. avatar jetchick says:

    Bent

If in fact they don’t cut younger, productive healthy players why is Brandon Moore no longer with the team. My point about JC was his numbers are no better then Coles not that he should be cut. Fact being Coles is our number one receiver, has been, and given the opportunity will continue to play a key role on our team.

  33. avatar ramble914 says:

Brandon Moore is still with the team. His release was only rumored.

If we are stuck paying Moore $7 million for 2009 I have no problem releasing him. We could sign Stacy Andrews to play RT and move Woody to RG. IMO that would upgrade the line and save us $3-4 million on the cap. In fact, I wouldn’t mind seeing that happen anyway.

  34. avatar ramble914 says:

I don’t think there is anyway that Philly will trade Shepard for Coles straight up. Coles would have to renegotiate his $7 million contract to make it more attractive for Philly, because know body in their right mind would pay him that much money…except us.

  35. avatar Ilan says:

jetchick- Cotchery played with a shoulder injury for much of the year if I’m not mistaken.

  36. avatar Big A says:

Why be down on Barton? He was tied for the 11th most tackles (119) by a LB in the league. Scott was 54th and Harris 60th (missed a few games with injury).

I like his aggressiveness and thought the real problems with this defense was the philosophy (low risk) and Mangini 3-4 scheme.

I think Ryan’s style of defense suits guys like Barton better and that he could be a great contributor at the right price.

  37. avatar Big A says:

I like Coles, but he is beat up every year by having to play across the middle a lot. We needed to get him on the outside more and frankly, that wasn’t going to happen with BF’s arm problems last year. But, with a fresh arm in there, who knows…

  38. avatar Big A says:

As far as trading for Lito it looks good on paper, but I’d be concerned about his attitude. He may be talented, but he’s been eating sour grapes for awhile. I don’t know if that’s what you want to bring into our young secondary.

  39. avatar Big A says:

I’m hoping Coles and Moore, both renegotiate their contracts to more cap friendly numbers and that we can keep them both. I hope we can bring Baker and Barton back, too.

On defense, I think our biggest needs are at safety, not cornerback, and DE. I would use a high draft pick to get the best 3-4 DE available. Maybe a kid like Tyson Jackson (LSU 6’5″-290lb) would fit the bill.

On offense, I’d cut Franks and get a huge (6’6″-270lb) sure-handed TE that will help the power running game. It could be an Anthony Hill (NC St, 6’5″-262lb) or a Sypniewski (RFA Ravens, 6’6″-270lb). Also, I’d draft a powerful running back like Chris Wells or Shon Greene. IMO, Leon is a 3rd down back who hasn’t been used properly (see Brian Westbrook) and we need a guy that can challenge TJ or be the every down back if he’s hurt.

    Just my thoughts…

  40. avatar Bent says:

JC – Moore is a different matter, that’s all about value for money. If they can save $7m and think they can get more out of it than Moore would provide, then there is some logic to what they’re thinking. So, yes, while he is young and productive, if he’s not good value for money, the team is smart to try and maximize the use of their cap.

Getting rid of Coles is similar because if traded this saves the Jets another $5m. That’s the main reason people are calling for him to be cut but never Jericho, not just the (as we agree overblown) character issues. I realized you weren’t suggesting it, was just making the distinction clear.

Coles’ contract cannot be renegotiated to save any money in 2009, Big A.

  41. avatar RK says:

Why get rid of Coles? Exactly because he and Cotch are identical. We have a Coles in Cotchery and Cotchery is quite and not a pain the the ass baby with the media, talking about the team and management, sulking about his loyalties…totally unprofessional.

I would like for Coles to stay just because I don’t think he’s done and is a gamer but if you could get similar production for less price that is the smart thing to do. The offense looked pretty solid so you don’t necessarily have to fix it because other than the QB spot it’s not exactly broken.

Personally though I still think it’s time for them to draft a WR or RB higher up than 3rd or 4th round. I think they can get a CB somewhere other than the draft this year or in later rounds so WR then CB, OL would have to be the top priorities for drafting. If you don’t do it in a year when they say there are some good WRs then when do you do it? Same thing goes for if a good RB drops to you.

Additionally drafting a good WR would clear a couple roster spots at least. Maybe we’ll actually have the room to develop some stars like Leon has become.

Maybe the Jets draft only Defense for the remainder of the Rex Ryan tenure and he happens to be here for the next 20 years.

  42. avatar jim says:

what will trading coles do to our cap space??

  43. avatar jim says:

and if im not mistaken, shaun ellis is a major cap casualty worth somewhere around $9-10 million?? why dont a) we trade him for a pick and get that money off of our chest, then use it to maybe land a guy like haynesworth. he’d play DE in a 3-4, tackle NEXT TO JENKINS in a 46 and 4-3.. b) trade coles for a pick to possibly land a franchise QB like stafford or sanchez OR draft a WR to replace him like hakeem nicks.. and hey, with this kind of money we’re lookin at making a serious run for scott, leonhard, haynesworth, plus our 17 pick for a guy like DJ moore if we cant get a CB in FA and two more picks for ellis and coles.. either way ellis won’t be very productive next season and imagine how much flexibilty we’d have and what we could do with that extra $10 million under the cap

  44. avatar Bent says:

Jim – trading Coles saves $5m, but the other team would have to be prepared to pay him $6m in 2009.

As for Ellis, cutting or trading him saves only about $4.6m. However, they were reportedly mulling over exactly what you suggested.

  45. avatar Big A says:

Thanks, Bent. In that case, I’d vote for trading him out of the division. I don’t see the value at $6 million when (as RK says) we already have a Cotchery. Give the guys we have a shot or pick up another guy in the draft that we think can be a No. 1 receiver.

  46. avatar JesusRevis says:

Cutting Ellis and trading Coles are both bad ideas. I dont understand this philosophy some of you have centered around cutting so many players. How do you expect to fill all of these holes? Keep your veterans and draft young players to eventually replace them, but as of right now, Shaun Ellis and Laverneous Coles are both good players at their positions and well above average.

I have posted the numbers on other threads, and they show that Ellis had a more productive year than any 3-4 end in football. As for Coles, he had very good numbers given his injuries and given Favres meltdown down the stretch. Coles would start for almost every team in the NFL, yet you all want to dump him? Dump a guy who goes hard every Sunday, goes across the middle, loves to win, makes our team better, sets a good example on the field for other players. LC is a soldier, and I would want to go to war with him every Sunday. It makes me sick how quick peole are willing to give up on these guys.

  47. avatar Big A says:

JR, what’s the point of drafting young players if you don’t play them? It’s a delicate balance of ability, toughness, skill, experience, money and cohesion (within the team and scheme).

Coles is a tough receiver who still has some good skill and experience, but his ability has diminished due to injuries and his salary is just out of proportion in relation to his ability to contribute.

They say football is a business and unfortunately, he needs to face reality. In other times, his ability to contribute might not have been such an issue, but not in this day’s NFL.

  48. avatar Green dream says:

Cutting Ellis? Hmmm. Save 4 mil but that is cheap these days in the FA DE market. If you cut him it should be during camp AFTER you draft someone like Gilbert (hopefully around the 3rd rd), and can see that he can contribute right away. 3-4 lineman is not easy position to pick up but Ryan’s D maybe different.

As for Coles, he is as tough as nails and tends to make the tough catch but i will never forgive him for dropping the 4th down pass in his arms against Seattle.
He dropped A LOT of passes this year but he’s also a leader on the team for his toughness so it is a tough call. 6mm is not a breaking amount. it might for the lockerooms sake be best to eat it and let him walk next year. Again though we should draft,a No.1 type this year to groom OR really work with Clowney, then if it doesn’t work draft a No.1 next year. Coles is still a dang good player and coupled with Cotch are a top 3rd tandem in the league. Additionally if you really develop Keller you should have a Tony Gonzales type threat, look what KC did on offense back a few years ago w/o a No1 type receiver. Christ they had eddie kennison at receiver both of our receiver are better than him.

Lastly we can’t pay moore 7 mil. let him go and draft Duke Rob in the 2nd rd.
