NFL Combine Check In

There’s a bunch of interesting stories coming out of the Combine, we’ll have a roundup tomorrow morning, but here’s some of the biggest stories so far:
Caution with Crabtree — Michael Crabtree, one of the most talented prospects at Wide Receiver in the country might have seen his stock fall due to his stress fracture. If you’ve ever watched Crabtree, it’s easy to see why he’s so highly rated, but the fact is that team’s might be hesitant to take him early in the draft with his injury concerns … could he fall to the Jets? It seems unlikely.
Andre Smith’s Unenthusiastic Approach — Alabama’s Smith was potentially heading for the top spot in the draft. After an issue with an agent before the Sugar Bowl, and showing up to the Combine out of shape without an agent, Smith withdrew from the Combine promising to be in shape and prepared for his Pro Day. With this many questions about him, it seems unlikely that he will go so high in the draft.
DHB’s Blazing 40 — Maryland WR Darius Heyward-Bay ran the second fastest time at the combine for a WR since 2000 with a 4.30 40 yard dash. Somebody just raised his draft stock …

There were a ton of WR’s who ran fast today. We will be able to get a quality guy in RD 1 or 2 in this draft.
Suprisingly the RB’s were slower than expected. Wells and Moreno both ran plus 4.55.
Heyward-bey is looking better and better at 17
SAY NO TO PERCY HARVIN!
Darrius, ohhhh he’s sooo dreamy!!!
Who is your dream pick at 17 lgs?
Sanchez threw the ball pretty poorly today. Still love this guy lgs??
Heyward-Bay. The Jets were hamstrung with the DBrick draft. But these 2 years their in a position to make the sexy pick. Last year they screwed it up. This year breath some life into that offense!!!
what turns me more off to crabtree than anything was that at Texas Tech he was listed at 6′3 but when he went in for his physical by nfl scouts he is listed a little over 6′1 and everyone thinks he isnt going to be fast. i know field production is huge but just from the weekend watching the combine i would say i would rather have Darius Haywood Bey hes bigger and also has had the fastest 40 time among the wr’s that have run and thats including Harvin..
I want a WR, my draft board:
Crabtree
Maclin
Heyward-Bay
Nicks
The Dream pick at 17 is Rey Maualuga
Junior – I dont think speed will be a problem with crabtree, it is disappointing that he is not as tall as expected, but he is still a game breaker with good speed.
Drew, I know you get off on antagonizing me, but I didn’t make up the rule that say you take a franchise QB if he’s available and you don’t have one. Not my rule. So…
Maclin to me has Peter Warrick or Desmond Howard written all over him and Harvin is just a less durable version of leon washington dont need him dont want him Hakeem Nicks must run well to warrant a first round pick at 17
The thing is there’s s many great, surefire athletes in this draft that it would be really hard for the Jets to screw this up. But I know if there’s a way, Mike Tannenbaum will find it, ooooooooooooh!
If Sanchez is available at 17 it would put the Jets in a very tough spot. ITs hard to pass on a potential franchise QB, but Rex Ryan seems pretty set on going with the guys we already have.
Surprisingly Ian Johnson the running back from Boise State for the past 15 years had a 40 time of 4.38 which i think is the fastest for running backs.
Anybody know what Rashad Jennings ran? WHere you getting the numbers from. Im at work. lol.
I pray Sanchez is picked before 17 dont want a slingshot for an arm in a gunfight in the swirling meadowlands winds
I hope the same thing junior
norb ran better than 4.45
* No RB ran better than 4.45
Ian Johnson on his first run ran a 4.38 just watched it live.
Rashad Jennings ran no better than 4.6 – they only listed the top 10 performers at each position, and Jennings was no on the list
I think Sanchez is going to drop like A Rdogers did. He needed to really quiet some critics today and only created more with his showing this morning. Only a handful of career starts at USC and threw poorly today
Jennings either didnt run or was +4.6 becasue he’s not in the top 12 of RB
The top 10 WR ran sub 4.45 and 10 all outran the fastest RB (Ian Johnson’s) 4.45.
Big WR draft this yeat
this is what im seeing
Peerman, Cedric 4.45
Johnson, Ian 4.46
Sheets, Kory 4.47
Brown, Andre 4.49
Brown, Donald 4.51
Williams, Javarris 4.52
Goodson, Mike 4.54
Scott, Bernard 4.56
Coffee, Glen 4.58
Lucky, Marlon 4.59
Wells, Beanie 4.59
Heyward Bey ran a 4.30
If its like 4.8 he’s no longer one of my draft darlings but anything 4.65 or higher is fine because of his size.
That’s a nice 40 for Donald Brown.
Jarret Dillard had a higher vertical jump than Calvin Johnson. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Moreno ran pretty poorly today also. Except for D Brown every top RB ran slowly.\\I cant believe how fast the WR’s were. They dominated the RB
Moreno was always slow. He was never valued on speed. He’s quick and he he
s a banger. Like a smaller version of that guy from Buffalo.
He ran a 4.55 and a 4.6 though lgs… at 5′10 214 that slower than I thought.
Last year guys like J Stewart & Mendenhall who are much bigger ran low 4.4’s.
Passing on Rodges didn’t work out too well for San Fran.
I hear you Drew, but even as a freshman everybody knew Moreno was slow, but still special. I’d take em. The guys does everything.
in a perfect world i would like maualuga in round 1 and Robiskie in round 2
Hakeem nicks ran a 4.49 which just jumped his stock
Heyward-Bay is fast, but speed is really the only reason anybody is talking about him. He is not very strong and not a good blocker. I think he is too much of a risk for an organization that can’t have another first round pick disappear.
GM,
If it was just speed I wouldn’t feel comfortable touting him as a round 1 guy. Heyward-Bay was dominant in college. He’s actually looks bigger than 6′2″ and now this 40 to add to that. Check his stats. He’s been a good, strong, WR. He reminds me of Andre Johnson from Houston.
Hasn’t produced as much of the downfield stuff as I would like to see from a franchise WR.
gm – heyward-bay did 16 reps which was 9th best and his vertical jump and long jump were both top5. this guy is the real deal
Heyward Bay played in a system where they ran the ball alot and the qb wasnt anything to brag about where as Crabtree played in a Run n shoot offense and never ran the ball all while having a qb who at one point was considered for the heisman trophy contender
If anything, DHB looks smaller than 6′2″. He was a good blocker in college though. He just doesn’t have a whole lot of production. Some of that can be blamed on his porous QB play, but he wasn’t ever a guy that seemed to want to take over a game. Very talented physical specimen, but reminds you a lot of Vernon Davis.
So 9th best in reps for WRs means first round? Come on… He is lacking as a football player…he has been called a one trick pony for a reason. He’s a vertical threat, and at this point, nothing else. Every year, there are players that are overvalued because of their combine performances, and DHB is one of them.
I thought Robiskie and Britt really looked good. They ran good enough 40’s and caught the ball really well. I know he’s more of a possesion guy guy Robiskie is a dominant route runner and catches everything. Dosent hurt his day had been in the NFL for years. Love to see this guy wearing green…..
Robiskie is the pick we need in the 2nd round DHB I like but we cant take another guy thats a combine star. We need FOOTBALL players Robiskie I like and with the 17th pick if we get a cb that would be good wr is deep this year we can wait til the 2nd or 3rd round
I don’t know about you people but I would take a LB at 17 unless Crabtree Falls to 17 or Malcolm Jenkins, both are unlikely, another person I might look at if he falls that far is Sanchez
why would the jets draft another quarterback, what are they gonna to with the other 3 quarterbacks they have that are still in their 20’s
Jets shouldnt even go near another quarter back, if they do draft one go for a different quarterback we dont need another pocket guy, draft someone that can move like Pat White, 4.4 40 time lefty and he has a cannon, can make plays with his arm and legs
I just dont belive Sanchez is a franchise QB. Didnt love him at USC and dont love him now. It will be brutal if he is there at 17. It put the Jets in a horrible spot. I would let him pass but …..I can see it already.lol
koss,
We have P White on our roster already. His name is Brad Smith
WE DONT NEEEED A WR it would be nice but we need other positions more……….. unless we get a great value dont draft a wr till the 2nd or 3rd round at best we need a CB and a QB First!!!!
no way muauluga falls but would love him
oh and pat white has a much stronger arm then brad smith tired of the whole brad smith thing he is not developing its been over 3 years come on let him go to cleveland with mangina lets get Robiskie in round 2 white in 3 or 4
NO QB’S IN THE DRAFT PLEASE!!!!!
Jennings ran a 4.49 his first time but then ran a 4.62 his second time. Due to the significant time discrepancy, they asked him to run a third time and he ran another 4.62.
Hayward-Bey is fast, but speed doesn’t make you a great WR. I think he is more of a track star than WR. I want to see the DL and LB’s perform tomorrow before making a decision on who I want. Did anyone see Josh Freeman? He has a cannon arm.
And another thing. Pat White was really impressive throwing the ball. He also ran a solid 4.50 and 4.49 in the 40 yrd dash.
the jets are gonna need MLB from either the draft or free agent now that Bowens is gone and Barton could also be gone
Yes gm, 9th best in reps does mean something when youre an already highly raked prospect and you ran the fastest 40 time. Considering most of the WR’s who were atop the list for reps are not even considered 1st day selections, reps doesnt really mean that much. I just pointed it out because Heyward-Bay was ranked in the top 10 for every category. Very impressive for a guy who ran the fastest 40 and is aleady a highly ranked prospect.
So 9th best in reps for WRs means first round? Come on… He is lacking as a football player…he has been called a one trick pony for a reason. He’s a vertical threat, and at this point, nothing else. Every year, there are players that are overvalued because of their combine performances, and DHB is one of them.
Josh Freeman will be the best NFL QB of the bunch, just my opinion
Brian Robiskie looked great today. He did everything right. Ran a 4.50, caught everything that came his way, has nice size, 6′3. I would definitely take a look at him for the 2nd round.
lgs its funny how you consistenly criticize Tannenbaum, but his resume is much more impressive then most GM’s, especially given that he has only been a GM for 3 years now? He has been good in the draft, good infree agency, and great in trades. I dont know why you say he’s gonna “screw it up”
the jets already have a fast receiver in clowney his 40 time at the combine was 4.37 which is faster then macklin and harvin so i dont think that a wr is the right pick at 17. You either can pick cb vontae davis there to compliment revis and that could possibly trigger a move to safety for dwight lowery which would be a good thing because he could be used more effectively that way especially in the run game considering he was tied for the team lead with 5 forced fumbles. Another move would be to pick one of the inside linebackers that are available hopefully rey mauluga
Junior – Nicks already ran and ran well. i think it was slightly under 4.5. Scouts seeing this are defintely going to take notice and it will probably secure him a first round pick. His size and hands combined with solid speed will intrigue a lot of teams.
Thanks Bobby, sounds good to me.
How can people say that we don’t need a WR? You’re happy with that production from last year? Come on???
I like Robiskie…
if the jets dont draft a corner they could try to get deangelo hall who is a free agent
I’m a fan of always drafting defense unless you have pressing need on offense. Personally I dont think the Jets have any huge needs on offense other than QB, (but im pretty sure Rex is gonna og with one of the 3we got) so id be happy with a lb or corner. However, both of the top 2 corners will most likely be gone by our pick, and other than muauluga (who will most likely be gone by our pick) I dont like any of the LB’s. It is truly up on the air where the Jets are gonna go in this draft, we’ll have to wait and see.
listen all of the wr’s in this draft offer something to the table but defense wins
what about lauranitis i know hes not the most athletic player but i can see him being available at 17 and maybe it brings a little stability to gholston playing with a former teamate.
And Crabtree is on 6′1 instead of 6′3″.
and no i dont think we need a wide receiver if clowney doesnt get hurt in the beginning of last year we are not having this conversation
the only reason i am not big on big 10 guys is due to the fact that there not allowed to report until classes end and that means he misses rookie camp and all the other crap and with a guy like laurenitis he is going to have to learn to play in a 3-4 and that means meeting time he will not get due to ncaa rules
I will be very angry if the jets drafted laurenitis
Dan, you sure about that? What’s his pedigree? Weren’t we unable to make this small speedy guy thing work with Santana Moss? You think him a Brett would’ve make something happen.
Wrong. Mark my words. The difference in the Jet’s fortune this year depends on them getting a big time WR and actually having a downfeild game. WR is the MOST important position for the Jets this offseason. Remember I said it. That’s the key to everything else working.
laurinitis is a high character guy. i would like him.
lgs
david clowney is not small like santana moss
Moss 5′9″
Clowney 6′1″
lgs I agree with you to a certain extent but teams dont need great WR corps to be great teams. Outside of Arizona, the rest of the teams in the playoffs had similar talent at the WR position as the Jets do. I agree that we shouldnt bank on Clowney, he is unproven and his size and what happened last year may be an indication that he is an injury prone player. I disagree with you on Santana Moss, as a large part of the problem was he had Chad Pennington throwing him the ball which negated his ability as a deep threat. He has truly never played with a QB that could enhance his talents as a WR. Put Santana Moss on the colts or patriots and he will put up elite numbers.
I also find it hard to understand how you could say WR is the most important position for the Jets this year and not QB. Isnt QB ALWAYS the most important position for any team?
laurinitis is overated because he plays at ohio state, hes a white lb, and his dad was a pro wrestler. no thank you
Lgs, what has sanchez done for you to think he is a franchise QB? Just curious. Why wouldn’t you want to wait for next year and draft a much better QB than him?
Dan,
there’s a reason why Sanchez is a first round grade. I’m not gonna argue it. If he falls and the Jets pas on him, everyone in the league will be looking at them going ‘Hmmmm, and you wonder why you can’t win a superbowl…’
Koss,
if you beleive Clowney is six one, I got some magic beans I wanna sell you.
Revis,
I agree with you about Moss. But if that’s the case, why did your other beloved GM draft him?
You’re also right about the playoffs teams, not all right though. I speaking specifically to how the downfeild game figured in the fall of brett the Jet and our passing game this year.
Dan, it’s redundant to ask a Jet fan to wait for anything. For what has a Jet fan ever done than wait?
clowney isnt as small as santana moss hes listed at 6′0 and if you dont remember he wasnt even activated until week 14 or 15 because of his injury with his one and only catch coming against the bills week 15
When I say WR is the most important position because relative to our specific situation. If the Jets bring a QB, with the same offensive talent and defenses are still keying in on the box because our passing game is a joke, that QB will fail, whether it’s Tom Brady or Tommy Maddox.
Now that being, I still don’t pass on a franchise Q if he falls.
Brett fell off because he didnt care about the Jets. I cared way more about the team then he did, no question.
I agree that the Jets dont hav a legit downfield threat, I just dont see any free agents that are godo enough to spend money on, and drafting one, rookie wr’s usually make litte to no impact, unless your Randy Moss
dan,
exactly my point. He’s produced nothing. And he’s 5′10″ at best.
looks like the pats are signing fred taylor
This fascination with Clowney needs to stop. He hasnt done anything for us. preseason games dont mean $h*t
LOL.. DAN.. Don’t tell us to wait
we have waited 40 years, we are not in position to wait
The time is now!! not next season
I think Brett was never an incredibly accurate qb, and he was given second rate receivers and no time to develop chemisry with them. ANy QB comes into the same situation. Cotch has the best radius on this team and that says a lot about the potential of this group.
clowney is really 6′0 which is what he was measured at at the combine and there should be a little hype about this guy he showed in the preseason that he could run the deep route on several occasions and use his speed
Favre didnt collapse cause he didnt care, he collapsed because he was OLD. He did what old QB’s do when there skills are diminished and just couldnt put it together for 16 games. If its a 12 game season were 8-4. It was a classic case of the once great player that time just caught up to.
With that being said Heyward Bey running a 4.3 is pretty impressive at his size. Correct me if im wrong but he s in the 6-3 210 lb range. Id like to find out what his vertical and bench reps were but a guy with that kind of size and speed combo at wideout is what the Jets are sorely lacking. Its gonna be interesting to see what they do with that pick but there are gonna be a lot of impressive players when the Jets go on the clock at 17. Cant wait for free agency!
Wow, that’s the the smallest 6 foot guy that I ever saw…
igs
y r u on this blog? all u do is bash our GM who rly isnt tht bad of a GM
There’s a size discrpency. Noone seems to knor if he’s 6-2 or 6-3. He looks big on the field but so does crabtree.
Eddie – look above, i posted Heyward -Bays numbers above
Because all your GMs do is make me miserable!!!!!! Year after year!!!! I hate em I tell you!!!
here it is
heyward-bay did 16 reps which was 9th best and his vertical jump and long jump were both top5.
lgs, youre simply wrong about tannenbaum, theres no otherway to put it.
heyward bey’s 40 time might be skewed a little because he actually was a sprinter and has a background in track so it definitely improved his 40 time
A track star that was dominant WR in college. Gee why would I want that???
he has only been GM for 3 yrs dude, how could u have made ur life so bad…
wat moves did he make tht make u hate him???
dan, even if heyward-bay knows how to run a 40 it doesnt matter, hes fast plain and simple
Only 3 years, making a lot of Bradway type moves, like dumping moore. Brdway depressed me.
you make a lot of comments without and examples or facts to back them. How bout listing some of these “bradway type moves” you claim tannenbaum made??
didnt say he wasnt fast im just saying that its possible that someone like macklin is just as fast as him with a football in his hands
AGAIN!!!!!!!!!! MOORE IS NOT CUT THEY ARE RESTRUCTERING HIS CONTRACT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
trading up to get Darrelle Revis who has proved to be an elite shutdown corner that every team covets
trading up to get David Harris who was clearly undervalued by other teams
trading only a 3rd and 5th rd pick for kris Jenkins who is an elite DT and made the pro bowl in his first season as a 3-4 NT
making the right decision in not trading up for reggie bush and instead landing a franchise LT, in d’brickshaw.
trading a disapointing john abraham for a 1st rd pick which netted us a pro bowl C, nick mangold.
trading for thomas jones which cost us next to nothing, and he wound up being the starting rb in the pro bowl!
making good free agent acquisitiong which addressed needs, faneca, woody, pace, richardson.
Tannenbaum has done a great job lgs, youre out of your mind
so says newsday anyway
dan, so what if maclin is fast too, all im saying is heyward-bay is clearly fast, his 40 time isnt skewed like u said
i was just going to say something about moore because on the jets website he is still listed on the active roster and was confused by that
Why should I make a list. We’ve had this argument millions of times Revis. I know Moore aint cut, but if he doesn’t restructure…
Enough trying to psychoaniyze me, lets talk about Heyward-Bay. I hope we get em. But I never get the sexy pick so I’m not betting on it.
so if he never ran a 40 before he would have gotten the same time of 4.3?
dan,
everyone practices 40 and hires trainers specifically for their 40
Hakeem Nicks! Hakeem Nicks!!!!
i know that but a guy who is experienced in coming out of a 3 point stance and running 40 yard dashes is going to have an edge over someone who isnt comfortable in coming out of a 3 point stance
lgs, you dont have to make a list, i just chose to make a list because it proved you wrong. you cant just continually bash tannenbaum without any justifiable reason. I happened to give several reasons why he has done a good job, i choose to back up my points with facts, and evidence.
Dan, everyone practices running 40’s since they all know it can make or break their draft status. It seems youre trying to claim that heyward-bay is deceiving people, its not like his practice is going to change his 40 time from a 4.5 to a 4.3. fast is fast
dan, how many decimals are u suggesting that heyward-bay could possibly gain by practicing running 40’s?
probably around 4.40 instead of 4.30 a tenth of a second could be the difference of someone getting out of there stance
revis, moot point, i’m not havimg this argument. I hate the jets GMs Bradway and Tanny. Eff em.
ok so 4.4 is still fast, its irrelevant whether or not he has experience running the 40. you cant disguise being fast or not
lgs, you have the right to hate whoever u want, and i agree with you about bradway, but tannenbaum has done a good job
yeah i agree, Tannenbaum done a good job except the part when he hire Eric Mangini
mike89, cant argue with you about that one
Ohhhh can you feel the love tonight?
I love the jets
I think we put way to much emphasis on 40 times. They all train to run the 40 and how often to receivers run straight 40 yard patterns?
We need to look at route running and separation. Good route runners create separation by making crisp cuts and having better footwork than their defenders.
I watched about 12 hours of the combine and I was most impressed with Robiskie as were the NFLN commentators. We don’t need break away speed, Larry Fitz doesn’t have elite speed, he is a great route runner and has amazing hands.
Combine stats are ok, but it’s more about studying film and seeing how they play during real FOOTBALL games.
Igs, you might disagree with a few things Tannenbaum has done, but some of the main points you make about how he wastefully traded up for Revis and Harris are lost on almost all of the other posters here.
Its odd, because you’re clearly a knowledgeable fan, you just disagree with the majority opinion that Revis’ success had justified that trade-up to guarantee he didn’t get picked by other teams. The jury is still kinda out on Harris, but he has shown enough as a 3-4 LB that the trade for him is also hard to put on Tanny’s list of failures.
In recent memory, the true failed experiments have been Kendall, Baker, and maybe Moore. I’d put the Favre trade on the list, too, but it was worth the shot and they didn’t get killed on that trade. I personally would definitely put the Gholston pick on that list, but I’d be criticized for doing so too early.
But you seem to focus on trading up for Revis, Harris and Keller. Most people here think those were good moves… so while you’re entitled to your opinion, it doesn’t matter how well you articulate your points if people disagree entirely as to the merits of the argument.
This isn’t meant to knock your knowledge, just to let you know most people don’t view those moves as failures.
I think what you’ve been focusing on
What I’m trying to say is that you are putting more value on what the JETS traded in order to move up for those respective draft picks.
As other posters have noted, the Jenkins trade was dynamite. Additionally, the Pace signing has worked out pretty well. Faneca improved the line, and probably more importantly, helped the development of Brick and Mangold. Even Woody was good, which I didn’t expect because he’s fat and has stubby arms. I don’t have too many gripes with Tanny.
I like to start with size, speed, power and agility and work down from there. If a receiver excels above the rest in these areas, then let’s see if he can catch the ball fluidily, has football sense, is a student of the game, is a team player, etc. I, for one, am not going to count a good performance at the combine against them, just because of the relatively few busts in the past. I want to see what Darrius Heyward-Bey, Brandon Pettigrew and Rashad Jennings bring to the table after their excellent combine times and scores.
drose,
I agree I watched some of the combine and I also thought Robiskie was the most pro-ready, skillful WR there, he also had a very good senior bowl. There is way too much emphasis on the 40 time.
draft Jarret Dillard in the 5th round
thats the only wr u need
Mizzle, my dislike of Tanny doesn’t just go to his moving up. I’m not even particularly mad about revis, because there was a lot of logic as to how to use revis. It’s a lot of other things. Ive had this argument with you guys so much but it’s a mixture of factors, not just that:
-The Pete Kendall incident
-moving up for Keller
-even considering cutting Moore
- I waited for ages for a top notch QB, when I finally get 1 it’s a 40 year old has been.
-Refusing to get just one of those WR last year – I mean couldn’t we have taken a shot on Adarius Bowman atleast? I mean come on.
-It’s starting Jacob Bender
-signing a thousand aging TEs and DBs
-turning away every experiencd head coach after Mangini
-Hiring a guy that had DC duties but Belicheat refused to name DC
-drafting tweeners when the Jets suck at drafting tweeners
-keeping stupid brian thomas hanging around
-making brad smith a WR (He’s a scrambling qn guys!!!)
-Etc, etc
And all this to just add to the crap i went through with that freakin frakin idiot Terry Bradway. So when Tanny screws up, he’s not learnig on the job, he’s carrying on tradition.
Robiskie I like. But would you rather hav Amani toomer or Andre Johnson???
Fact of the matter is jets need to pick up heyward bey, seeing that he would be the perfect compliment to cotchery to spread the field for years to come. And I hope some of you near sighted fools who say we don’t need a WR understand that coles is not going to be here beyond next season…and while I do like clowney, he is still unestablished and we need a tall big body WR, haven’t had one since keyshawn. I think it will make a hell of a lot diffrence for our offense, it would be a good nucleus for our young qb’s to come up in.
Robiske…is alright, but can we please quit with the possesion recievers!?
I figured some of you fans would get tired of the whole “reliable, but no big play ability” recievers….
I’m sorry lgs, you made some lame points on your dislike for tanni, maybe 1 or 2 decent ones in the possibilty of cutting more and the whole kendall fiasco but other than that…..c’mon fam. At the end of the day your definately enititled to your opinion, but he’s still revered as one of the better gm’s in the game today after just 3 years….I’m just sayin
lgs, thanks for finally giving some explanation for your opinions. I hope you do realize though that Terry Bradway was never very popular among Jet fans, and most of us agree with you about him. Also, Mangini is to blame for a few things you mentioned, but I guess since Tannenbaum hired him it is essentially his fault. I still have no idea why you keep harping on the fact that the Jets didnt draft a WR last year, considering it was a weak WR draft, and they chose to draft Keller instead. I dont know who all these “aging” tight ends are that youre referring to, other then Franks I cant think of another one. I know Keller will prove you wrong, and I hope youre still posting on this site when he does.
When you don’t win, I’m sure that there’s plenty of blame to go around. I think Mr T is doing alright compared to the rest of the league. He has room to improve like every other GM. I did like when he traded up to get Harris, Revis and Keller. I think those guys have quality above most of that years crop and is betetr than drafting more marginal players. I hope he continues to draft those impact players and supplement through free agency.
I can only pray that Crabtree drops like a rock! in the draft!! If by some miracle he falls too #17, I will dance butt ass necked in Time Square……..I”M.NOT FRIGGIN’ KIDDING!!!
I would love for Crabtree to drop, but it’s not realistic. Maclin may not even fall to 17. I would wait till round 2 to get a WR. Heyward-Bay is too much of a risk in my opinion. He is too much of a trackster instead of a WR. Remember Johnny “Lam” Jones? Obviously this isn’t a 2nd overall pick, but it is still round 1 and I would hate to draft Bey and him turn into a bust.
As to Sanchez, McShay thought he had a good workout. SI’s Banks says mixed. If the FO and CS think he could be the franchise QB, I say get him if he falls or even go up a bit to get him.
While I am prepared to go into battle with our existing guys, that still doesnt substitute for having visibility to a true franchise QB.
All this talk about drafting the right guy in the first round doesnt really matter, it never matters with the jets, the last first round pick that made a major impact that helped the team was our 3 pick in the first round back in 1965.
Face it this is the jets we havent won a superbowl in 40 years and itll probably be more 40 years till we win another one, anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.
with the jets its the same thing over and over again, they find a way to take our money, piss us off and make us miserable. each year the same thing in a new way.
I gotta admit that I’ve fallen in love with Hakeem Nicks. I was hoping he might be around in round 2 but its looking like he won’t. What other traditional WR was as productive playing in a running offense? At 17, I wouldn’t take Sanchez. Aside from Stafford, this is a weak QB class and in basically any other year maybe none of the other QBs would be getting first round grades. Flacco went in the first because he impressed in workouts and had a fine college career at Delaware where he started quite a few games. Sanchez has not impressed as of yet in workouts and had only one productive year in college.
At 17, the options have to be a CB (Vontae Davis looks like the option right now), Maulauga/Laurinaitis, Moreno/Wells, or a WR (maybe Nicks is moving up into this range considering his college productivity and impressive 40 time). I would not go QB, both Freeman and Sanchez would be hard pressed to be as good as Clemens over the next two years. Why not wait for the solid class of 2010 QBs?
lgs,
Heyward-Bey was dominant in college? Really? You must be thinking of somebody else. 42 receptions and 600 yards is dominant? He only had 1 game over 100 yards. Maybe it was the whopping 5 TDs that has you mesmerized.
I too am hoping Rey Maualuga falls to us.
