Breaking News: Jets Release Laveranues Coles

This post will be updated frequently, we wanted to get the word out …
Word coming out this afternoon that the Jets have released WR Laveranues Coles. Coles agent met with the team in the Combine last weekend, so it was a premonition of things to come … so we’re not exactly surprised. Coles has been looking for a long-term deal for a while, but his physical style isn’t the complement that the team needs to Jerricho Cotchery. Hutch reports that it’s an amicable split for all parties involved with potential for Coles to return.
Coles, who was scheduled to earn a guaranteed $6 million salary for the 2009-10 season, wanted a long-term deal with the team. But when the two sides could not reach an agreement, they reached a compromise, giving Coles the right to find his own deal on the open market on the eve of free agency.
“We didn’t leave on bad terms,” Coles said. “It’s not out of the question that I could come back.”
From a look at the the Jets cap, no money is saved by this move, as the money was guaranteed … but who knows? Conventional thought is that the only relief the team gets is from him always whining about his deal.
Maybe there’s some clause that we’re missing. My understanding though was the the money was guaranteed unless the team traded him or gave him a new deal … the odd thing is … was there some trapdoor clause in the deal? Look at the report from the NY Post last year, clearly the deal was re-worked in some fashion according to Canny
Coles, who entered this offseason with two remaining years on his contract worth $11 million but wanted an extension to ensure he’d finish his career as a Jet, yesterday agreed to that extension. Terms of the deal were not immediately available, but it’s believed Coles had either two or three years added to his contract.
At least it’s not ugly, Hutch writes that the team and Coles left on good terms, and Coles who is quoted in the piece had only good things to say about Rex. The other silver lining is that it busts open the roster for competition.
You’d have to think there was some out-clause for the team. Maybe not, but the worst case is that there was no savings, best case, those monies were
Wondering why Clowney’s contract was waiting, on Tanny’s desk? This might have had something to do with it. At the least, it means that David Clowney has a real chance at competing on this team now with guys like Stuckey and Smith, or that the Jets might be interested in free agent WRs should the Bart Scott thing fall through or look for answers via the draft. They need a deep burner who can stretch the field, or don’t bother investing any money, in my opinion.
Thanks to Doug in Long Valley for the heads up.

1st i just saw it on nfl live
oh well hes a cry baby anyway
now draft hakeem nicks
But the team is still on the hook for his full salary against the cap, no? Do they get complete relief if he signs with someone else?
YESSS!!!! NO MORE COLESS!!!!!
How does this change the cap
Sign Houz?
wow, didn’t think they’d actually cut him. The intrigue surrounding the start of free agency just keeps growing
If they did this without any relief in the cap they are STUPID!!!! Period….As annoying he…He is not a cancer like TO talking nonsense to the TV…Unless he slapped the coaches wife or kissed her for that matter..its a horrible move…(ASSUMING no relief in the cap and if they have to pay the entire contract!!) Why pay for him to help someone else, if u dont want him to start..for whatever reason then u keep him for insurance of a major injury…HELLOOOOO this is the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE and injuries are a part of the game!!!!
PLEASE let there be some relief because I can’t imaging Tanny doping something this terrible..Lets SEE!!
i think the move has to be made, BUT, is there any question that he doesn t end up in miami?
they wouldnt cut him just for the sake of cutting him obviously there getting cap relief
I’m so pissed I couldn’t even write properly..LOL
His contract was guaranteed. We need answers!
It is my understanding that Coles forfeited the guarantee, to obtain his release…therefore I hope 6 million more in cap room
Dan,
Unless they reworked a contract, I believe the contract is guaranteed..so lets hope they did..I gotta beileve they did.
i m sure they didn t just cut him without getting cap relief. what jet orange said makes sense
madness.. I’m not a huge Coles fan, but i am a little concerned about what our offense will be like next year…
Wow. Some of these potential cuts are getting a little crazy
JetOrange, I hope your right..If so Great Move..If Not…DUhhhoooo :)
Wow, cant say im not surprised. I know a lot of people on here were asking for this but I dont know if this is the right move. How do we replace Coles now? Stuckey, Clowney and Smith havent proven they can be starters yet, so this is a big hole. I dont know how I feel about this right now, but if they are saving money by doing this move, then now they definetely cant justify cutting Brandon Moore.
How do you replace Coles?
even if the jets draft a WR in the 1st round you cant expect a rookie receiver to start. Rookie WR’s rarely make any impact. There is a weak FA class outside of Housh, so I don’t know how this spot will be filled. I’m a Coles fan, and he always played hard in green and white. I for one will miss you LC
jetorange i believe that did happen in the article on nj.com he said that he is taking a risk leaving his guaranteed money but there is a chance i could come back
I think Mike wanted to do this from the bottom of his heart, but I didn’t think he had the balls to do it, because of the money he got guaranteed last year
To back up Jet Orange’s point:
Coles, who was scheduled to earn a guaranteed $6 million salary for the 2009-10 season, wanted a long-term deal with the team. But when the two sides could not reach an agreement, they reached a compromise, giving Coles the right to find his own deal on the open market on the eve of free agency. Coles, 31, is taking a gamble , as his contract for the upcoming season was guaranteed, something unusual in the NFL. Coles, however, feels a long-term deal is more important to him than they guarantee.
From Dave Hutch’s article on the nj.com
jetorange, are you sure of that?
Did u hear that somewhere?
The article by Hutch explains everything – including the fact that he might still be back.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/02/new_york_jets_release_wide_rec.html
so thats 6 million more on the cap!
you ****ers reply quick on this board.. i’m a newbie learning the ropes.. i love it though..
I read we are off the hook for 6 mil. Maybe we keep Moore now. If this is the case I wish Coles good luck in Miami and hope we spend our 1st or 2nd rounder on a WR for our young QB.

so even better, coles initiated this divorce.
jesus – you replace coles with cotchery and you fill the empty slot with a receiver that gets seperation and stretches the feild. cotchery will take over the role coles played.
and i think we should have never traded moss to get coles back.
I think that Mr. Coles will be best off in Miami. He was a solid performer but it seemed that his greatest skill was in boxing out opponents on the side line for 7-9 yard completions. This suited Mr.Pennington’s style supremely as he always loved to finesse, outsmart, and outflank our opponents.
But now, with Mr.Pennington gone I watched all last year and thought that Mr. Stuckey was at least as applicable if not more at this point.
I’m not ‘glad’ or ’sad’ that Mr. Coles is gone…but at the same time it’s probably best for him and the team.
this could mean that the organization is real high on david clowney
Can anyone say with full confidence that the Jets dont have to pay him the 6mil now?
Ok i had to read this 5 times before i belived it. I been a big coles fan since he was a rc. but this is a smart move. The jets must have reworked his contract before they let him go.. Coles at this point is = imo to stucky… Stuckey on the other hand is young and showed me alot last year when he played. No i am not saying stuckey can be are number 2 guy but i think coles is deff not a number one guy. He is a good number 3 guy at that. I see us drafting a w.r. to play number 3 and getting a vet to play number 1. Problem is i think we have to trade cause at this point the top names are harrison, t.j., and d. henderson…… Ehhh
this opens the door for keller to have a huge year. hes an absolute beast, lets do this!
It’d be great for Clowney and Stucky to step up now. Both are shorties though..
I’m curious about Markus Henry, the 6′4″ WR they drafted last year.. i think in the 4th round? He was a practice squad guy all year, but was hyped up on draft day.
Coles leaving a hole is assuming that he would have a good season next year. From what we saw this year, he wasn’t creating separation, definitely never stretched the field or created YAC, and often dropped passes. Cotchery was the better receiver this year, and I GUARANTEE he was playing hurt.
We won’t have a true 2nd receiver, but Keller will take a heavy load off the expectations. Not to mention this mans we will run the ball more, and we will see more Neon Leon.
According to Rich Cimini’s article, The cap cost will be defrayed when he lands with another team. Here’s the link
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2009/02/25/2009-02-25_jets_to_release_wide_receiver_laveranues-1.html
I was at work all day, can someone tell me what develpments there were today with Bart Scott?
I heard he is likely staying in Baltimore?
Anyone know the details that can share with me?
this could also mean that the jets are never planning on throwing the ball ever and when rex said we were goin to run the ball he meant every down haha jk obviously
thankyou T
if report is accurate that his K will not count against the cap, i don’t see how you can find fault with this move. maybe now brandon moore stays, or did i miss that becoming official?
nothing new really with Bart Scott, jesusrevis. (that i saw anyway)
it’s time, sorry laverneus but it is
thanks jetobsessed, Bart Scott would be a huge pickup. I still think the Jets need to get a FA WR, even if they draft one early
I really hope he doesn’t come to Miami. It’s hard enough down here with Pennington!
Wow… I did not see this one coming. I’m glad and all because Laveranues out lived his usefulness. I know Laveranues and the Jets had some contract obligations / guarantees in place, but if they were going to cut him I figured it would have been next year.
The other day I made a comment about the Jets still being in a “win now mode” based on the amount of money the front office spent on players they acquired last season, and that they are likely to acquire an “above average to very good” quality QB to start during Free Agency. A guy like a Kerry Collins who is a game manager and does not turn the ball over often. With the release of Coles they just tipped there hand.
no way there going with the qb’s they have or they will address it via the draft they are not going to go after a veteran qb of the caliber like kerry collins maybe someone like rex grossman at the most
Ewwww, even the idea of kerry collins being on the Jets makes me sick. He is as old as favre, and no half as good, if favre didnt work out, why would collins?
i know it made me throw up too and how does the release of a wr mean we are going after kerry collins
Rex Grossman? I hate the idea of bringing in all of these disgusting QB’s. Go with your guys or draft someone. If your gonna go after a QB make it someone lik Derek Anderson or Marc Bulger.
Im sick of hearing of the possiblity of sigining:
Kerry Collins, Rex Grossman, JP Losman, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jon Kitna. eeewwwww
this is being teed up to be an exciting weekend, when the rest of the teams plans are realized when free agency begins…
i was just saying that rex grossman was an example of the veteran type they would even think about looking into instead of an old veteran like collins sort of like a patrick ramsey of a couple years ago
I understand, but it still makes me sick
It seems as if the JETS are getting rid of all their headaches before the Rex Ryan era begins. I say good riddance to Coles and now the signing/drafting of a tall WR who can go deep becomes imperative.
COLES is a duplicate of Cotchery. We did not need both. Why lose a guy like STUCKEY or CLOWNEY for COLES when we have his clone already on the team. Watch out for Marcu Henry! he is 6ft4 and can run routes. he is tough and acrobatic! Plus he is a lot stronger then Coles. he will go over the middle. he is a tough guy as is cotchery!
TJ Houshmandzadeh
After reading the article from the newark star ledger, it seems to me that Coles listened to his agents advice and decided to forfeit the 7mm to find a long term deal. Jets were not going to give him an extension, thus Coles asked for his release. It would make zero sense otherwise. According to NYJETSCAP.COM the cap hit is 1mm. Not 7mm.
1. This move means the jets have a lot of faith in Stuckey and Clowney.
2. Is there a little collusion with Parcells and Miami, I know Chad is lobbying for Coles. Is there a deal with Miami already in place…. Its hard to give up guaranteed money..
3. Brandon Moore> Coles
4. Is Devery Henderson a better fit for this team, can he be obtained for under six million.
they have to sign a WR. besides Cotchery noone else on the roster is good enough to be a starter in this league.
devery henderson can basically only run 1 route and its the deep route and has recently dropped off in new orleans so im not sure i would want him
Per Cimini: The Jets are on the hook for the entire salary, which will count against the cap. The cap cost will be defrayed when Coles lands with another team.
Latest on Scott…..
Although no deal is believed to be imminent between the Baltimore Ravens and inside linebacker Bart Scott, his agent said Tuesday night that progress has been made as the team has increased its contract offer to the unrestricted free agent. During ongoing negotiations with Ravens vice president of football administration Pat Moriarty, the team has raised its financial proposal to Scott at least twice, according to Harold Lewis, Scott’s agent. “I feel like we’ve made some progress, but we’re not there yet,” Lewis said. “Anytime you go north, you’re headed in the right direction. That’s good, but we’re just not there yet.”
NNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! WHAT THE ****!!!!!!!
Chad has his boy back
Ok here is a thought…..
With all the cap space the Front Office has made over the last two weeks, could they be stock piling the cash away just in case Brett Favre decides he wants to play another year this of course if the Jets acquire the players they need first?
JetOrange-
Interesting idea re: Miami… Aside from Ginn their WR situation is rather lackluckster….
He will probably resign a longer deal at a lower rate. I would rather jusst eat the money and keep him away. He is a premaddonna and a poison.
Also: Anybody want to sign Will Demps as the SS. He has Rex Ryan blood from his time in Baltimore. He is 6′0 tall and had a great year with with the Giants 3 years back.
jesus –
i resent that you wouldnt sign me
Losman sucks.
the jets are signing leonhard is a lock
david i,
well lets make sure we get there before everyone else i wanna be buyin a bart scott jersey this weekend
In life you don’t appreciate what you have until it is gone. Coles was a warrior. Forget the other nonsense, he was the toughest player on the team since C Martin.
So if Coles signs with another team a long term deal, then we lose his money off of the Cap?
That is huge. That is another 6 mill. I am guaranteed that with this crappy WR offseason in FA, that he will get a deal real soon:
SF, MIA, WASH, CIN, Philly, Cleve (maybe?)…they would all love to sign him, Detroit, Houston…
Maybe we make a serious push for Haynesworth and Scott???? Pay Haynesworth 12-15mill a year, and Scott 8-9 mill, sign Will Demps at a small contract or Leohnard. Then we need to find a gritty corner, and the Defense is stacked. All we need is Ratty or KC to not throw picks, and we run the back. The defense will score more then the Offense like in Balt.
J,
Never compare Coles to Martin. Martin was the most unselfish player to ever wear a Jets Uniform. The only one close to him was Pennington. Coles is a premadonna who cries constantly. He is 1 concussion away from retirement. He is always wanting more money each and every year. He is a number 2 receiver and always has been.
Kenny Britt
Where does Lavernes Land ? and How soon ?
My Guess: Chad has already brokered a deal with the Phins
1. Miami
2. Jacksonville
3. Tampa Bay
Coles lives in Jacksonville, maybe Carolina, what do you think ?
Ca,
Not comparing him to Martin. He played through any injury except concussion, and like I said in our earlier dialogue, GETTING PAID is the #1 motive for all players, yes they want a ring, but they want their green 1st. Maybe he is a number 2 receiver, but he was still #1 on our team, you cannot tell me that they will replace him w/ someone better, maybe cheaper.
J,
You are probably right, but I think Stuckey can grab 600 plus yards and 6 tds in a season. I think Clowney can grab 500 yards and 4 Tds. Cotchery can grab 800 plus yards and 5 scores.
The truth is we don’t need that.
Give the ball to the RB’s and throw off the play action here and there. Screen passes small dumps, and short routes. Those WR’s we have can be play makers, and don’t forget Keller. Laverneous won’t be replaced, but won’t be missed either. The defense, if they sign the right people, will make that be known. They can score more then the offense with REx’s scheme and the right people.
Kerry Rhodes and Revis Score more TDs than LC in 2009 :)
I don’t have all the facts about the contracts etc, so am once again pieceing together information from various sources to try and give my take on the cap perspective.
I have been saying all along that the only way out of this contract is if there were some type of clause whereby Coles could choose to forego the guaranteed money (for want of a better term, I called this a golden ejector seat clause). That appears to be what has happened here.
Coles foregoes the guarantee, but the money remains on the Jets cap until he signs with another team. I disagree with Hutch that it is a big risk for Coles because he can test the water and then if he can’t find a deal, then the only way he’ll get paid is if the Jets re-sign him, which obviously they would be likely to do if faced with the choice of having a 7m cap hit and nothing in return.
It’s almost as if they are trading Coles for nothing, so the new team takes on his new (renegotiated) salary and then if no team takes the bait, they are more or less back to square one.
This saves 5m off the cap, assuming the whole cost is defrayed (ie he gets more than the $6m he was due) when he signs with a new team, which I would assume is going to be the case. If he signed for less than that, they may still have a bigger cap hit. Maybe they will now retain Moore, but I wouldn’t bank on it. I still think money is going to be tight if they want to fill multiple needs.
Ignoring the financial side of things, I am sorry to see Coles go, as he was a great Jet for many years and always a gamer, although I am excited to see Clowney and Stuckey move up the depth chart, because I like their potential and saw Coles as past his prime.
I think Penninton has talked to Coles…., Miami’s got a 1-2 punch now!
Kenny Britt indeed!
IF IF IF we can sure up an ILB (ex: Scott) and a SS( ex: Leohnard) in free agency, I could see the Jets taking Britt round 1.
Not likely, however. I think the more probable scenario is scoping out a WR in round 2 – but Britt’s likely to be off the board by then.
Ca
I agree, I just do not like the haters who are worried about contracts, and the media nonsense. I am only interested in what these guys do on Sunday between the white lines, the rest of the stuff iscreated so the writers and radio/tv talking heads have jobs. I used to love sports when it was about sports, but now it seems to be more about everything except the actual game. DEFENSE!!!
Hutchinson is a great reporter, I love Boland but Hutch is just the best, we are lucky he covers the Jets
J,
I agree:
Foot ball is easy…Run the ball and stop the run..create turnovers.
You don’t need manning, or brady to win the SB. We need to give the ball to Leon ad TJ, in the pass and run game, and beef up the D.
Scott or draft
Leohnard or Demps
Haynesworth!!!
Noone is talking about Haynesworth..Tampa cleared up a lot of room today, but so are the Jets. This can be a big push for him!
Lastly, we need a new RT or RG depending on where Woody plays. Do we draft, or promote from within?
Coles is a solid pro receiver. He is getting on in years so, it would be nice if we could upgrade his spot. I like Clowney and Stuckey as our third and fourth receivers. Clowney can stretch the field and Stuckey can move the chains like Wes Welker. I am anxious to see if Marcus Henry can step up and be that big target for us. Lots of possibilities. For those of you who bash Coles — you may never be happy. We could have had a better receiver, as our main man, but Coles came up big, over and over. I have to thank him for a job well done.
I think Cimini is wrong on this one. I’m sure that the contract will be cancelled before Coles is actually released. Coles benefits by being able to negotiate with other teams with no compensation involved. With 2010 being uncapped, he will get a contract with a balloon payment in 2010 from Miami. I can hear Chad saying “pretty please” to the Tuna.
Chad,
Miami does not have a 1-2 punch. That 1-2 punch never got the jets to the promise land, so why would it work for Miami? They will still wild cat it, and LC will complain that he does not get the ball enough. His performance has dropped substantially, and he is not a #1 receiver for the Jets or Miami or anyone. If he goes there then so be it, but him TJ Housh, or M harrison are all now #2’s. They will go to the Tampas (with Bryant), Det (with C Johnson), Houston (with Andre Johnsons)
is threre really any possible scenerio in which we get haynesworth?
I can see that possiblity now:
We have opened up ALOT of CAP room.
I would rather get Haynesworth and draft a USC LB instead of Scott.
He can play DT or DE
We are releasing Sean Ellis next or trading him watch for it.
I love the Management of this franchise. Let’s rebuild now. Let Miami and the Pats fight each other for the next four years; but after that, the future is ours!
With this team…… anything is possible JP.
I am convinced now that Tannenbaum and Woody are truly insane!
Hate to be a party pooper but once all incentives, rookie cap and free agent re-signings are taken into account, I think the only way they can afford Haynesworth is if they don’t get Scott or Lewis unless the deal is seriously backloaded.
Why couldnt they trade him so they would get something for him rather than just cutting him and getting nothing?
The next guy to cut is the worst captain we ever had (mr. overated) SHAUN ELLIS!! He’s a cancer to this team and we’ll never go anywhere with him!!
Here comes Hakeem Nicks
I would rather Haynesworth over ANYONE!
Our DL would be insanely good!
If we trade Ellis, then we have the cap room for Scott and Haynesworth right?
Dont cut Ellis. Trade him. He had a good season last year and is worth a 4th rounder maybe.
Whatever, as long as he is gone!
Why would they trade ellis as opposed to cutting him if they didnt do that with coles?
How much is Ellis accounting for on the Cap this year?
Coles is 6 mill
Favre 12 mill
Baker what 6 mill???
Moore 7 mill?
Plus we shed Barton also, and then what??? We have a serious chance at Haynesworth and Scott
hahaha “jplosman” im sorry brother, but you stink!
A lot of hate on devery henderson here, and comments that he can only run the deep route. Well arent we looking for a deep threat to compliment J-Co? In case you didnt know Henderson had 793 yards with a 24.8 average. Sounds good to me
The following os from JETS CONFIDENTIAL:
It would have been plain dumb for Mike Tannenbaum to release Laveranues Coles, and take a $6 million cap hit in 2009. That isn’t what happened.
Coles wants a long-term deal. The Jets don’t want to give it to him. He has one year left on his deal, for a guaranteed $6 million. If he had been cut, that entire figure would have counted against the cap.
So Coles and the Jets reached a compromise. He took less than $6 million (we aren’t sure of the figure yet) and was granted his release on March 1.
Coles thinks he can get a lucrative long-term deal on the street.
You have to wonder if a team, like Miami or Cleveland, has a wink-wink deal with Coles. Why else would he give up $6 million guaranteed?
A team that would make perfect sense for Coles are his hometown Jacksonville Jaguars. They need a #1 receiver, and he surely would give
Coles opted out of the guaranteed money. They didnt actually cut him I think. I know what the reports say, but he is searching for a long term deal.
I really agree with Bent’s last paragraph….I couldn’t have said it better than how Bent said it, so I’m copying it here…
“Ignoring the financial side of things, I am sorry to see Coles go, as he was a great Jet for many years and always a gamer, although I am excited to see Clowney and Stuckey move up the depth chart, because I like their potential and saw Coles as past his prime.”
What about leigh bodden for CB
for ALL of u suggesting we cut or trade ellis whose the replacement?
We have a devery henderson in Clowney…NEXT..
JESUS,
HAYNESWORTH, and worst case Canty
Goodbye LC, I love how the team is cleaning house. Spring cleaning in Feb. Love the moves!!!!!!!!!!
Jerry
Well said!
CA Jets Fan, Haynesworth aint coming. And to play DE?
If Ellis was released, he would be the top 3-4 DE on the FA market. Why downgrade the position?
Jesus,
Yes DE
He plays everywhere on the line.
Jerry,
Haynesworth and Canty are not a Downgrade..
thank you jerry, ive posted the stats a millions times on all different threads, do I have to post them again. Ellis had a better year than ANY 3-4 D-End in the NFL last year. What the hell do you guys want?
Canty is a downgrade, youre crazy if you think hes better than Ellis, or maybe youve been drinking too much of the Cowboys kool-aid
Obviously I would be very happy if we got Haynesworth, I just dont see it happening, however if it did that would be the only move that would justify cutting or trading Ellis
Jesus, Jerry
Sean Ellis is going to be what 31 or 32
Where was he before last year? He had a great year because of Jenkins, Pace etc
Bryan Thomas had a decent year too because of the additions, but can you honestly say:
He is better than Haynesworth, or Canty???
I would absolutely not want haynesworth!! He will cost so much money and…
He has never played a full season.
He only plays 2/3 of the game.
We already have Jenkins.
Why not get peppers??
Jesus.
I am glad you agree. I think what they will do is make a push for Haynesworth and then trade him at the draft (ellis) if they get him.
Haynesworth and Scott should be their biggest pushes..Those guys with Jenkins, Harris, Pace would be nasty…Plus Barton is gone is they get Scott. That opens up space too.
Peppers would cost us atleast a first rounder and a TON of money..
I would rather have Haynesworth more of an impact player. Offenses create game plans because of Haynesworth.
HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY THIS:
He can play DE, DT, NT…3-4. 4-3 anywhere. He is the best DL in the league
“Why would they trade ellis as opposed to cutting him if they didnt do that with coles?”
Not suggesting it’s a good idea, but there’s a slight difference in that they had to get Coles to opt out of his guarantee before the free agency period began whereas with Ellis, the key date is whenever his roster bonus is due. Could be March 5th, could be June, not sure.
I was never diagreeing with you about Haynesworth, im not retarded, but Chris Canty is NOT better than Ellis, no chance
Me neither, but there is value to trade ellis. He had what 8 sacks, and a bunch of FF last year?
CA Jet is absolutely right about Haynesworth. If you can play any position on the line in a 4-3 (and he did) then you can certainly do the same in a 3-4. But I still say we can’t afford him or Peppers.
Jesus,
I do not agree on Canty..but that is fine:
I would rather have Haynesworth over anyone. The only other guy I would pay a ton to get would be NGATI from Balt. He owuld be amazing next to Jenx too.
LC has been a team leader and our best receiver for many years. Last year while injured he still had 70 catches and 850 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also had a QB with a wounded arm and would have put up better numbers if not for that fact.
LC is a stud and a tough guy who is willing to take viscous shots to make plays for his team.Considering we will probably have a young QB not great at reading defenses, Coles no doubt would have been an asset.
Those of you that call him a cry baby are confusing your own weaknesses with his. A man that plays through pain and plays well is no crybaby. A man that is loyal to his best friend is no crybaby, and a man that gets every last cent he can from scum bag owners like the Big Woody is doing what every red blooded American does to get a better paycheck from his boss…so what
Those of you that think Stuckey is as good as Coles are delusional, and if Clowney should develop it will be a long time before he puts up Coles numbers.
Let us keep in mind that we still have a bad offensive coordinator who has shown no sign of developing talent …let alone a game plan.
Getting rid of Coles and Brandon Moore is just stupid. I also believe you will see Baker do well with another team. I though he was underutilized, has great hands and can block.
The decisions thus far about cutting players to clear cap room have sucked. It indicates that Big Woody and Tranny call the shots here not Rex.
Clearing cap space to acquire aging players that sell seats and have one or two seasons left is a losers game. Rewarding hard work, consistency and dedication works in football and in life.
CA, youre entitled to your own opinion, but the numbers dont lie, and the difference between Ellis’ numbers and Cantys are dramatically different.
Canty – 37 tackles 3 sacks 0 FF
Ellis – 60 tackles 8 sacks 2 FF
I understand Ellis plays next to Jenx which helps his numbers, but Canty having Demarcus Ware coming behind him isnt bad either.
I would only find it fair to say Canty is better simply based on age, but right now Ellis is the better player, bar none
Well said ..Jetchick
I watch the football, not just the numbers. If it is based on numbers then you are right, ellis has better numbers. But this is the best time to get rid of him. He is a bit inconsistent, and right after a good season he has value.
I lvoe Thomas Jones too, but to be honest and I will be hated for this. This would be the best time to trade him.
I live in SD and 2 years ago I said they should trade Tomlinson for a 1st rounder and keep M Turner. Now they wont get a 4th rounder for LT. It is about timing the age and productivity and checking out the potential.
good point about the chargers and LT, keeping turner would have been the better move, and your point about thomas jones makes sense. If the Jets could cut Ellis and KNOW they are going to get Canty then I would be happy with it. my only point was that I think Ellis is a better player right now, other than that I agree with you on everything.
Agree with you on Ellis of the present.
Haynesworth needs to be the target though!
I am not surprised at all about Coles leaving the Jets. I didn’t think the Jets would keep an aging injury prone WR. I would have wanted to keep Coles if he was more durable.
Other items:
1. Leave Shaun Ellis alone. He played well next to Jenkins.
2. Trade our #1 pick for Anquan Boldin.
3. Trade our 2010 #1 for Donovan McNabb.
Why does everything with the Jets have to be bittersweet? Since Cole’s cap number is the same in being released, why wouldn’t they atleast try and parlay this into a pick, even if its just a 4h or 5th rounder. What’s the science behind this?
while i loved coles, he wasnt the same player wo santa moss. that was a great one two punch
i like the move, i think it moves the team in the right direction and hopefully they can get a player that fit with the current players
also haynesworth is not needed, lets get someone threw the draft. thats how pitt got so good and the ravens.
Sad day to be a jet fan, to find out the money was guaranteed makes it feel worse, I thought that the team just needed a compliment receiver via the draft or free agency to play with coles and cotch, I didn’t see the need to cut LC

I think they would have had to do this before the free agency window opened otherwise the option to release him would have disappeared, because it becomes to late for Coles to forego the guaranteed money.
oh, okay, but what I’m hearing is that the money is still guaranteed are they saving on cap penalties or just saving a headache? My thinking is that if they still have to pay out some of that money to coles, a pick would’ve been a nice compensation.
Thank god
We need to bring the NASTY back to our D. Either Headstompin Haynesworth or Ray Lewis. How come everyone is solely focused on BScott? No talk on Ray Lewis? What gives?
i just saw that he restructured his deal so they could release him without cap ramifications thank god let him go and lets go get somebody else who is less of a cry baby..
why because ray lewis is getting a little old and is going to demand lots of money
see ya punk, i say get rid of all the old baggage clean house
Why does everyone want Haynesworth so bad? He mainly plays the same position as Jenkins…At least that is where he is most effective….He is going to be the HIGHEST Paid defensive player in the league! So now your tying up all your money on the D-Line….in the 3-4 you need a space eater in the middle and good run stopping ends with some pass rush ability….The linebackers are key in Rex Ryans defense….Ngati is the key on the line in our case it will be jenkins….Haynesworth is most effective playing over the center! so you are essentially paying someone a huge contract to play a position that is not best for their talents if you bring him in as a DE…
Go after Bart Scott or draft a playmaking LB…..Linebacker is a great position to draft its a safe position to draft much like O-Line is…
Jim leonhard will be here and will be a good compliment to rhodes much like he was to ed reed. So you need a corner opposite revis…maybe rex ryan likes lowery? .if not he may draft that instead..I dont want to sign TJ Housch as he is going to command to much money and always started across Chad Johnson and basically either/or took the pressure off of each other…But obviously I feel a veteran wr needs to be signed just to give you that presence in the wr corps cause if not your talking inexperienced or young guys alongside cotch…I view keller more as a wr anyway.
I would rather this team spend wisely then just go out and spend more money on haynesworth…tj housh and big ticket free agents like that…bart scott is the only guy i dont have a problem spending a lil extra on….
igs – as noted above the consensus appears to be that they won’t suffer a cap penalty and may even have the option to bring him back at a lower salary if he can’t find a decent deal.
greenisgood – the reason Scott is the more popular name is because he (a) takes on blockers and (b) can cover which makes him a perfect foil to David Harris. Lewis is less of a good fit (and many don’t want him because he is older slower and more expensive).
You may be right though, that his nasty streak (and leadership) could be just what the Jets need. We’ll see.
People are suggesting Will Demps ??? Hell NOOOOOOOOOO! he was terrible with the GIANTS why do you think he lasted one year and they cut him! He was good ib B-more because he had Ed Reed behind him and a SUPER front 7. Sign the kid Leonhard and let’s go. And draft Kenny Britt
Funny thing is;
Every GM on this blog totally missed the esence of Gregory Rasputin comments. Whay don’t you all experts go back and read the true value of Coles… Like 3rd and 8, maybe 3rd and 12 or more? How will you all replace that ?
Coles is 31 and has suffered a few concussions better to let a player go a lil too early then too LATE> And Mr.T gets a lot of HEAT for some of his moves but there is one thing he does best that nobody can deny is he is a cap-ologist he knows how to manuveur numbers for the salary cap so i am sure we will not take a hit with this Coles move he did
hank i am with you, check my 1st post on this thread, my exact question was how do we replace coles?
JesusRevis, on February 25th, 2009 at 4:51 pm Said:
Wow, cant say im not surprised. I know a lot of people on here were asking for this but I dont know if this is the right move. How do we replace Coles now? Stuckey, Clowney and Smith havent proven they can be starters yet, so this is a big hole.
Very good points as usual, Bent. If Bart Scott will do the Ray Lewis dance, I’m all in. I recommend busting it out at weddings shortly after tying your tie around your forehead.
What about Leftwich? Probably can’t bust a move but he’s efficient. Or maybe Dirty Sanchez drops to 17? Would Collins come cheap? And is McNabb even a possibility? The loss of Coles would seem to me to dissuade free agent QBs from signing with us. Any thoughts on that?
dont want scott or hayneworth for the money they will command!! go get gabe watson to back up jenkins sign napolean Harris cheap then in the draft middle line backer isnt such a need and we can go and get a wr and an maybe even sign chris canty
maclins looking awfully good at 17
I think will pull off a draft day trade and get Anquan Boldin for the 17th pick. We all know Anquan Boldin is a proven commodity. Teamed with Cotchery, Anquan will make any QB look good. Haynesworth is going to be costly. Jets are going to sign Ray Lewis for the same reason Favre was signed. PSLs. I don’t like it but that is the price of bringing in a new stadium.
By the way, I was at the Nets – Phil game. The stadium is coming along. It is much bigger than the current stadium.
DARRIUS HEYWARD-BAY!!!
Well, at least Darrius Heyward-Bey is easier to spell than Laveranues Coles. Oh, apparently not.
:o)
Well this is a good move. I’m a big fan of Coles. I never watched him in college. But the first time I saw him catch a ball in preseason I knew he was special. And he did some special things for the team. Now it’s time to go. Cotchery is all and all the same player, so is clowney, and stuckey. The Jets haven’t been good to him and he needed a fresh start to close out his career. He will make an impact somewhere where he can get the right QB and the right complimentary receiver. Maybe with the Ravens lol.
Jesus;
This guy is still a great receiver and if he goes to Miami he will come back and haunt us, Just like someone i know just did and everyone on this blog bashed !!!
Greeniesgood:
Suggestion: STOP TAKING THEM !!!
I am glad that this baby was release.
Lone Jet Fan
Weren’t you Johnny Stein last year?
Coles not durable….hummm lets see here. HE had 104 consecutive starts…a record. Durable in case you might not understand is in football terms the ability to play thru pain and be productive to start in consecutive games and at a constant level without compromise . Not durable…that guy is more durable the the ever ready battery bunny dude.
Here are a few Coles things for the rest of you out there glad to see him go.
■ Recipient of Jets’ 2007 Ed Block Courage Award as selected by his teammates.
■ Ranks fifth in franchise history in career receiving yards (5,091), sixth in receptions (389), ninth in TDs (30).
■ Ranks 67th in NFL history with 561 receptions and 96th with 7,245 receiving yards.
■ Selected by teammates as a 2007 offensive captain.
■ Selected by teammates as 2006 Jets MVP.
■ His 91 catches in 2006 are second-most in a season by a Jet, trailing WR Al Toon’s 93 receptions in 1988.
■ Combined with Jerricho Cotchery in 2006 to form top-producing single-season receiving tandem in Jets history with 173 receptions.
■ Has 19 games with at least 100 yards receiving and six multi-TD games.
■ Earned Pro Bowl selection in 2003 after catching 82 passes for 1,204 yards and six TDs.
■ Set NFL record in 2002-03 when he caught five or more passes in 19 straight games (streak began on 9/29 at JAX and ended on 10/19 at BUF).
Let’s not pay the guy out. Coles was a good jet. He even played out this past season without the contract that Eric Mangin promised him went back on.
Considering we haven’t had a real SB contending team since 1998 I’m okay w/the move. Coles gave us a few memories but at the end of the day he was a tough player who’d reached his ceiling.
Let’s go get a big fast guy w/hands and change the offensive direction.
I don’t know about anyone else but I’m glad we won’t be seeing that lame ass corner fade to Coles on 1st and goal inside the 5 yd line anymore
ohhhh, jetfan, now you’re speaking my language.
Also, I never got those corner fades. I mean he caught them every now and then because he’s amazing but, i never got that.
a fade route like that to a 6′3″ or 6′4″ guy makes sense, but really no receiver on the Jets has shown the ability to make that catch to date. Maybe Marcus Henry can be that guy….though for my money you’re always better running it in from inside the 5
Hey Jet Fan..
Try reading my last post and attempting to understand it. Guys like you cheered when Coles made those end zone fade plays and won games doing it.
Guys like you follow the tide of whatever the current trend is on this blog.
When Coles starts catching that pattern from Chad when we play Miami maybe you’ll catch on .
jetchick,
I did cheer on the maybe 5% of times the pass was caught as opposed to thrown out of bounds or broken up.
I am impressed with all of the stats that you compiled. For the record, not hard to understand at all….
My only point is that Coles’ best days are behind him and he is not going to be missed.
And I can tell from your posts that you clearly are a big Coles fan…. just like a woman to get emotional and start making personal attacks when a man states a simple fact.
I for one will miss Coles. Good luck to him, but I hope he is signed by a team out of the conference. Either way, I don’t think there’s much to be gained by arguing about it. That was a good post outlining some of his achievements, JC, I’d just leave it at that.
I wouldn’t say it’s a foregone conclusion Miami signs him. After paying obscene money to Vernon Carey and a hefty chunk to Crowder, they don’t have anywhere near as much cap room as the Jets, although they probably have fewer needs and WR is near the top of the list.
Bent:
I appreciate what you say and will let it go. I do not however appreciate the condescending and demeaning rhetoric spewed forth by jetfan in regard to a woman’s emotional stability when men bring facts to the table.
Firstly what he brought is not facts just his opinion, secondly, real men don’t need to cast doubt about the emotional stability of women…only insecure men need to do that. OK enough now said.
lgs did i misunderstand you or did you say that Clowney and Stuckey are the same player as Coles?
Since LC and Jericho became the Jets WR, it became obvious that they were not complementary players, but were mirror images. Both run great routes, can make great catches over the middle, and have a knack for YAC. What they don’t have is the ability to create separation on a regular basis. They were the perfect WRs for Chad, who was generally accurate with 20 yards between the hashes. But, when Favre came along, it became obvious that these guys just weren’t good at deeper patterns.
I’ve read that Ryan wants a strong-armed QB and I’m guessing he wants more verticality to open up the running game and those seams for Keller. So, LC, who is aging and expensive, became expendable. The problem is that now he needs to be replaced. Again, the Jets have in-house possible replacements with Stuckey (who has kind of the same attributes as Coles) and Clowney, who is more of a deep threat. I like Devery Henderson, who did very well in Football Outsider’s rankings..he was ranked 17th in DYAR and 1st in DVOA. I’d prefer a taller WR, but Henderson is a burner and the Jets need a deep threat. Also, the Jets should seriously consider drafting a WR, but most WRs need a couple of years to blossom. So, Henderson could a good, low cost alternative
Sack, I agree, ive been campaigning for Henderson for a while. He may be one dimensional, which is only as a deep threat, but that is exactly what we need. With Cotchery covering shorter crossing routes and outs, and Keller running down the seams, and over te middle, it would be nice to have a guy that can run deep patterns, and despite what some Jet fans think, Clowney hasnt fully showed he can do that yet. I think Henderson would come pretty cheap, and with the addition of him, and possible drafting a receiver in the first few rounds, we can have a nice receiver group.l
The people arguing the value of Coles’ recent or past accomplishments are missing the point. He’s looking for a new long-term deal. He’s seeking big money for what he might accomplish three or four years from now. I don’t blame him. But I also don’t blame the Jets for not wanting to tie up cap money at the position for a guy who’s taken a lot of hits and had nagging injuries the past two years.
J-Revis, the more interesting question is who is the QB that will throw the ball. I’m starting to think that the only reason to clear this much cap room would be to add a vet QB along with the defensive guys and, maybe, WR. I’m hoping for Leftwich.
I see your reasoning but Rex Ryan seems pretty content on going with the guys we got, and with a coach who values the running game along with a strong defense it makes a lot of sense for Ryan to invest his money in defensive players.
I hope they are not clearing all this cap space to sign someone ike Ray Lewis just to sell PSL’s. I wish I was rich so I could just buy all of the PSL’s and then maybe Woody Johnson would make smart moves based on the best interest of the team, not himself. Actually, if I had that much money I would just buy the Jets and turn this franchise around!
honestly someone please tell me how i should feel about this. yeah i didnt like coles as a teamate. but i really think he held his own on the field he was a tough player for the most part. i feel lilke this just gives the jets another hole to fill
RK, any real fan of the Jets is a little bothered by this news because you have to love Coles on the field, but at the end of the day he is a very similar WR to Cotchery, and there is no point in paying both. Coles wasnt worth the 6 million
lavernaues should go play for jacksonville isnt he from there anyway he will either be there, or dolphins with his boyfriend chad, or in cleveland with the man-gina
how do you feel about trading down if there isnt any slips of the top players and snagging hakeem nicks? or traded up to 10ish to snag maclin thats what i think would make this team
To call my post condecending seems a bit hypocritical from someone who responded to my opinion on Coles with: “Try reading my last post and attempting to understand it.”
If a blog like this isn’t a place where Jet fans can express differing opinions without getting bashed, someone please direct me to a better place.
Otherwise let’s just get back to discussing FOOTBALL….
David you right. Honestly coles and chad both kinds look gay so i wouldnt be suprised. haha
I cant say how I feel about trading down until I actually see how the draft plays out. I couldnt even tell you what position I want to go after because it all comes down to whose available. WR? CB? RB? ILB? OL?
Well i jsut hope ILB and at least 1 other of those is filled by F/A’s… or else all these cuts are pointless to me
let this piece of crap go as fast as possible …..he sucks and always has …….
Jetfan…telling someone to re read and to better understand something is not a demeaning sexist statement. Saying women become emotional when men bring facts to the table is. Period end of this.
I am just not understanding how it is that when you have 850 yards, 70 catches and 7TD’s that you are at the end of your career…especially when your QB seems to find corner backs more open then receivers.. How do we know that Clowney or Stuckey will in fact step up, or that a rookie we draft will catch on his first year.
RK are we now bashing gay people as well. Would you have the balls to call Coles gay to his face. The friendship they have defines loyalty and honor…is that something which makes them gay?
Next season when Coles is gone lets see if all those that are so happy to see him go are still smiling.
howard
leigh bodden is a stud..is he a FA?
jetchick
coles was great for us but he’s older, slower, injury prone and can’t get seperation off the line anymore
its time to part ways…let him go Miami…that team was just a fluke anyway…
JETCHICK had the most intelligent comments by far, she is right on, a real football fan, she understands the game!
Sigh….I miss Johnny Stein…. :-)
+1 Jetchick
Oh god, jetchick is getting sensitive again. Watch out, last season she felt the need to list her height and weight during an argument with me….still not sure why she did that?!?
That being said, I do agree with her…as I usually do!
I must admit I am a little sad to see Coles go. I realize his play is diminished and he is probably no longer a #1 receiver. That probably has something to do with the Jets switching from white shoes to black. Everyone knows that white shoes make you run fast.
But seriously, Coles was a damn good wide receiver, and one of my all-time favorite players. His toughness and play-making ability will not go unappreciated.
