BUZZ: Lewis 3 Years 25 Million
Posted on February 26th, 2009 by droseatwork
Adam Schefter of NFL network was just on WFAN with Joe and Kim and suggested the Jets might be looking at Lewis for 3 years with 25 million guaranteed.
He also said that if Lewis signs with the Ravens that Scott is a good possibility for the Jets. But that the two will split up.

that’s a lot of money will we have some left to fill other needs?
I do not want Ray Lewis! This would be like Favre all over again, but worse. I could not stand to have this obnoxious, showboating, over-the-hill, assh_le on our team. If we can’t sign Scott, we should resign Barton, because there might not be anyone better. Maulauga won’t be there at 17.
How much guaranteed money though? That makes a huge difference to the level of a deal, moreso than the full $ amount, sometimes.
HOZ – this is slightly less than expected. They will probably load all the salary into year two because 2011 may not happen due to the CBA so no player will have a high salary that year and 2010 may be uncapped. Therefore, the amount of cap space he uses up will probably be equivalent to 1/3 of the guaranteed money, assuming this to be correct. So it may only use up 4 or 5 million and therefore loads of space remains.
Shefter said it would all be guaranteed
ramble
I’m with you…let him stay in Balt. and sign Scott.
im sorry but there is just no way we can guarantee rayray that kind of money. i dont care if 2010 is uncapped. that is insane.
shefter cannot be correct on this
I’m OK with it if the bulk of the contract falls in the uncapped year. I would not want it to keep us from signing other quality FAs.
I think we are all missing the point, and yes I want Scott as well. Regardless of what kind of compensation Ray Lewis or Bart Scott could get from the Jets, the point is either of them inserted into our Defense would be a dramatic improvement from the Defense we have today.
I don’t know, maybe this is a sign of things to come. If there is no signing bonus, then I guess the salary would just hit the cap as and when it arises, so theoretically you could end up with salaries and cap hits as follows:
2009 – 5m
2010 – 15m (uncapped?)
2011 – 5m (may not happen)
Big risk, because injury or downfall could mean they’re locked in for three years, but you could get around that with contract clauses, perhaps.
It would also take one heck of a commitment for the owner to pay way more than the usual cap in 2010.
I’m not suggesting this is what the Jets are doing with Lewis or planning to do with anyone else, nor am I saying it’s a good idea, but I am interested to see if any teams take this approach.
I don’t want Lewis. Lewis means that its not about football, its about PSL’s. Can you imagine pass coverage with Harris and Lewis, abysmal
guaranteed is guaranteed, right? if this report is correct, no clauses are going to get the jets out of this deal. rayray is going to need a walker by year 3 of that contract, i dont care how it is structured, there is no way i want a commitment to a 37 year old rayray going on his 16th year playing the most violent position in the league.
i have come to the conclusion that mr T is leaking this to drive up the price and force baltimore’s hand. there is no other plausable reason for this
It the big money falls on an uncapped year, then it weould be a steal
He will still be a beast for the next 3-4 years.
How do we draft at 17 if this is the case? Sanchez?
No on Ray. I agree that this is like the Favre move, except with a murderer. Plus he’s old. I’d prefer Scott or someone early in the draft.
Brian311-
Basically, yes, but I’d hope it was “guarantees” rather than “guaranteed money”. For example, if a chunk of it was in the form of a roster bonus, they could cut him before it became due (or extend the deal another year and spread it appropriate). Alternatively, he could get bonuses that he forgoes under circumstances like Woody and Jenkins with their weight clauses. I think these were initially reported as guaranteed money too.
Jet Orange,
WRONG!
Lewis is about football. He is the defensive leader we need. He is a locker room changer, and can still play at a very high level.
Can Scott Play on the outside too or Harris?
If so I say get rid of Thomas and Barton and sign both:
Scott and Lewis..Play them with Harris and Pace and we have the best LB and most expensive set in FB.
“i have come to the conclusion that mr T is leaking this to drive up the price and force baltimore’s hand. there is no other plausable reason for this”
Maybe Tanny has no such intention and this has come from his agent?
Bent
That is a good and cynical thought :)
\But it would make sense
No way could Scott or Harris play OLB in a conventional 3-4 look.
However, CA has a point. Good players are good players and a coach such as Ryan should be able to use them. Conventional wisdom suggests the Jets need a coverage LB like Scott, but if it turns out they have to settle (?) for Lewis, then maybe that just means the front seven will be more aggressive and cut out the short passing by mixing up who rushes and who drops.
His age is the main worry for me.
Do you think Scott gets more then 3 years 25 mill?
Scott is probably looking for 6-7 years at a much higher rate right?
It is interesting, and I would rather have Scott, but Lewis is fantastic.
Scott should get at least 5 years. My guess is that his agent will try to get about 8m a year, although with any luck it will only take about 6m. I’ll be amazed if he gets more than Lewis’ rumored 25m in guaranteed money.
I was hoping that they could get him for less than Calvin Pace money, but since there is inevitably going to be a bidding war, I reckon it could push the price to pretty much the same level. (6 years 42m 21 guaranteed)
I hope they can get him for a bit less than that though. (5 years, 32m, 17m guaranteed?)
i dont see scott being paid more per year than that.
i see something like 4-5 year, $25-30 million for scott.
Bent….
Didnt Bart Scott play OLB and have a bunch of sacks 2 years ago…..Or did the Ravens play a 4-3 then??
I know he has played outside before
Yeah, 4-3 then.
Most 3-4 OLBs are 260+, he’d be too small. Harris did reportedly bulk up to 260, but it doesn’t suit his skillset.
A free agents 2009 contract can’t increase by more than 30% in 2010 and each year thereafter until a collective bargaining agreement is reached. So if the Jets sign Lewis, or any free agent ,their contract can only increase the following year by no more than the 30% limit.
If we don’t ign Scott, I’m 100% certain Woody will sign Rayray…Woody loves PR!!
That’s right, although I wonder if that could just apply to the salary, so that the distinction between guarantees and guaranteed still comes into play and then they could still do 5-15-5 over the three years, if the middle year included an 8.5m roster bonus. Probably not, but if there is a way to do this, I’m sure Tannenbaum is all over it.
im so torn on this issue. mostly i hate the idea of getting ray lewis because of what he stands for, his age, high salry, he killed someone. But at the same time I like the idea for similar reasons, he would bring a mean streak to our D, hes a beast, he killed someone…
Jesus – your post made me laugh…I feel the same way.
Will Harris give up his #52 for Ray? Well, Ray killed someone, so I guess he will.
Would Ray kill for his own number??
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ray lewis
