Free Agent Focus: CB Ron Bartell

We’re throwing stuff against the wall to see if it sticks. With free agency looming tonight, here’s some players that might interest the Jets …

In a kingdom of the blind, it’s the one-eyed man who becomes king. Bryant McFadden is the guy everyone is talking about overpaying, but maybe Bartell, who is young, a good size for a corner and looks to be free and clear of the Rams could be a threat to the throne.

The Denver Post is reporting that Bartell will likely see “five-year, $40 million contracts with $18M or more guaranteed.” Which means about $5 million TCV/year … about what I suggested the team spend yesterday. He would be a solid number two for the Jets, and give them flexibility heading into the draft.

Here’s the scoop from ESPN’s scouting data.

Very good size for his position and is a good overall athlete. Aligns square in press coverage and uses his hands well to disrupt the release with adequate flip to accelerate up field with good speed. Good body control with adequate quickness to mirror. Above average recovery speed on crossing and vertical routes downfield where he can open up his stride and make up ground. Good reach and long arms to extend as the ball arrives. He has good overall quickness and body control for his size. When playing off, he will usually shuffle early. He can get turned, forced to open his hips early by good routes. He’s not a physical run-support CB. He will close quickly on screens, but is not considered a willing and physical tackler.

  1. not so bad. Could be interesting.

  2. why have I never heard about this guy? oh yeah, scout.com gives him a 2-star rating, the same as Deltha O’neal and (gulp) Justin Miller.

    dear god no….

  3. Dont know too much about him, but his #’s look good- a lot of PD, a couple Int., has good speed- combine 40 time 4.37. I know sackdance hates this move, he doesnt want to invest much in the CB’s and i hear his point, but if we arent able to get Bart Scott, we better get a CB that can cover to go along with Revis, and Lowery.

Also looking at the 40 times of CB’s in this draft, most of their times were pretty high, mid 4.5’s and up, so ive lost some interests in picking any too high. Lowery has good cover skills, just lacks speed, he ran his 40 in the 4.55 range. So makes no sense drafting another CB with same speed that will struggle to keep up and cover NFL WR’s.

  4. Another prospect. I also like Leigh Boden. He’s 6-1, 195lbs. fast, and a good tackler.

  5. oh yeah, they also gave david barrett the same rating. bartell could be our new overpaid, underachieving corner. yay

  6. I am very unsure about corners that come from Cover Two Schemes…

  7. Bartell reeks of “David Barrett”… Not sure the Jets should be wasting their limited funds with this option.. I could be wrong though

  8. D.J. Moore as the 2nd Corner…any questions?

  9. No need to sign a corner unless they actually do plan on sending Lowery to FS or SS. Get a day 2 guy and rookie FA to mix it up with Lowery. Save your cash.

  10. I like D Mcfadden better than Bartell…. he is tougher and has played in nasty weather and big games

  11. Cory Ivy will be the other CB next year…

  12. david i,

I hope you’re wrong there. Corey Ivy is a good 3rd or 4th CB but I don’t like him as a starter. He was behind McAllister and Fabian Washington last year and scouts inc has him as a 58 overall…compare that to McAlister’s 78….

IMO I’d rather draft a CB with potential to eventually be the number 2 guys with Revis…maybe sign Ivy for depth, but we’re in trouble if he’s the #2 CB on our team

  13. Eh, I dont know about this guy, who here has actually seen him play? Why pay 5mil a year for a corner that no one has heard of? Stick with Lowery and draft another corner early.

If the Jets are going to sign a corner, sign a veteran like Mcalister to a cheap contract.

  14. I know how the Jets like to sign some Steelers every now and then, just want you to beware of Bryant McFadden. someone is going to give him big money because he was on a No. 1 defense that won the Super Bowl. This is a guy who could never beat out Deshea Townsend, and when he got hurt this year, William Gay started four games then rotated every two series with McFadden when he returned. That rotation continued right through the Super Bowl. So do not break the bank on this guy. He is just okay. Just like several of our other CBs were last year.

  15. Bubby, I agree. I dont like any of these FA corners which is why I just said if the Jets are going to sign a corner it should be a cheap veteran like Mcalister.

  16. get this guy.. we must get bartell.. leonhard, scott, bartell… would be great and we should try getting rid of ellis and getting canty.. an ideal offseason.. and this guy is younger and shold come cheaper than mcalister

  17. cheaper than Mcalister? I doubt it. Bartell will have many more suitors lined up because of his age. Look for mcaliser to sign a similar deal to what the Giants gave Sam Madsion 2 years ago.

  18. JesusRevis

Werent you the guy who slammed the giants when they signed madison? And claimed that he was horrible and washed up?

Now you want to sign a similar player? Ironic.

Mccalister would be a great pickup for the jets. Familiar with the system and can help the jets bring along lowery at a pace that is fair to the player. He was thrust into a spot last year that he simply wasnt able to succeed in.

McCalister, a solid 2nd or 3rd rd pick and lowery to go along with Revis should improve the jets piss poor play in the secondary.

  19. Bartell looks like a stud. Found the following video of him online.
