Jets Re-Sign Abram Elam

by Bassett on February 26th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

NYDN Rich Cimini also reports that the Jets have extended Abram Elam, the team’s hard hitting strong safety. Elam fits the physical role that the team needs at safety and will likely, with the lowest tender (allows the team to match), proves that the Jets haven’t put all their eggs in one basket when it comes to little Jimmy Leonhard and think that Elam could be a competent contributor in the new scheme.

EDIT: CAP INFO FROM BENT

It’s not quite as straightforward, as Elam is a restricted free agent.

Strictly speaking, he just signed a 1m tender, which means the Jets or any other team could still negotiate a long term deal for him.

If another team does that, the Jets have the right to match it, but because the tender is so low, they will not get a draft pick compensation if they don’t.

If nobody else makes him an offer, the Jets will be able to retain Elam for one year at the salary of 1m and then he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Are you kidding me? This guy made two plays the whole year. Albeit they were monster plays, but two plays. He so slow I bet Jenkins could outrun him. Seems like kerry’s woes will continue if they actually keep Elam around…

  2. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Hes a good enough player that makes no money. You can have a great player at every position…He can be a nice backup and mioght even play some LB in Ryan’s schemes

  3. avatar Scouse Jet says:

Is it that Elam has re-signed, or just that we’ve offered him the minimum so that we have the possibilty to match any offer he’s made, or keep him for that money if he gets no other offers?

  4. avatar Scouse Jet says:

Right you’ve just answered my question in your edit.

    Thanks

Why in the world are the Jets releasing Brandon Moore?

Cimini is also reporting the following:

The numbers show releasing Moore a dumb move
    February 26, 2009
Barring an 11th-hour turnaround, the Jets will release RG Brandon Moore at some point today – and that would be an incredibly foolish move.

I know, I know, I discussed this the other day, but now I have obtained a copy of Moore’s contract, and it reinforces my opinion that it would make no sense to cut him loose. According to a clause in the contract, the Jets have the right to convert his $7 million roster bonus, due next week, into a signing bonus. Unlike a roster bonus, a signing bonus can be pro-rated for cap purposes over the remaining years of the contract – in this case, four.

If the Jets make that simple move, they can have Moore on their roster this season for a $2.6 million cap charge, as opposed to $7.85 million (that would be with the roster bonus). Obviously, such a move would increase his cap charges in 2010, 2011 and 2012, but as they stand now, those numbers are reasonable:

    2010: $918,000.

    2011: $4.25 million.

    2012: $3.0 million.

I don’t get it. Maybe owner Woody Johnson, feeling the PSL pinch, is reluctant to cut a $7 million check. Why else would you give away one of your most dependable starters?

    lgs,

Since you dislike the Jets so much why don’t you leave and never come back. I’m sick and tired of hearing you ridicule every move the team makes. Go to the Giants blog and be happy.

  7. avatar Electric Ham says:

I like Elam he made some great plays for us, I dont think this signing will deter us from still signing leonard elam will just be a situational backup player for us, he has a knack for the big play which is always good to have

  8. avatar Bent says:

Come on igs, Elam made at least three plays. Didn’t you watch the Rams game?

  9. avatar ramble914 says:

    Big W,

I agree, if we can re-do the deal for $2.6 million this year, then it makes no sense to cut him.

  10. avatar Bent says:

Big W – Cimini is saying nothing new here, we already were assuming he could restructure in exactly this way and Hutch in fact reported that Moore was prepared to do so.

Also, I am not certain Cimini is correct that the whole roster bonus can be converted. I understand Moore’s deal has to be reworked to comply with the CBA opt-out so they would need to extend it by a year, so it’s less straightforward than he makes out.

This isn’t just about this year. The Jets obviously feel they can get someone who will be of better value over the next few years and in weighing up his value, they obviously take into account whether he is a problem behind the scenes. Maybe they intend to build the line through the draft, which is cheaper and could get them a player with better upside.

    Ramble914,

You could be a fan and not drink the koolaid, if the team had a history of making good moves it would be 1 thing, but…..

  12. avatar ramble914 says:

Granted, I’m just sick of his constant whining on every issue. Never anything positive to say.

  13. avatar J says:

    Ramble 914,

I have been going to games since 1970.
They have the best headlines from Jan through August, then they actually have to play.

  14. avatar ramble914 says:

I’m 46 and a fan since 69′, you don’t have to tell me.

Everyone knows that the Jets are the masters of the off season. This is when we shine. lol.

  15. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

Can we say back-up to the soon to be arriving starter?

  16. avatar swizzle81 says:

Rex would probably only use Elam on downs when there is an extremely high chance of a running play being called, which is Elam’s strength. Elam is also an excellent blitzer, which would force teams to account for him when he is close to the line of scrimmage.

  17. avatar Igs says:

lol. Okay Bent, 3. I’ll give him that. But he disappears a lot. You don’t have to be Adrian Wilson, but come one…

    Ramble, ???
Should I just praise everything the Jets do. I mean 40 years, you gotta start to ask some questions. I’ve spent a lot of disapointed Januarys, so… this is a place for me to voice my opinion, I’m going to voice my opinion. I’d be more in favor of dropping the vet that has reached his ceiling and picking up a young guy that has more upside to be a low priced backup. I’m not for keeping dead weight around.

Drew makes a good point. Maybe Ryan can find some new ways to use him so here’s hoping…

  18. avatar Tish says:

It strikes me as odd that we read that Moore would be cut soon and yet he is still on the roster as others go. Is this a simple ploy to merely push him to accept a renegotiated price? Deviously interesting.

  19. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

lgs – while we’ve got you in a “hopeful mood”. Can you list for me your three most positive and favorite moves that the FO has made in the past 2 years?
