Replacement for Coles already in Place?

by Weeks on February 26th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

According to Jets Confidential, New York already has a man ready to fill the empty shoes Laveranues Coles left behind.

“With the departure of wide receiver Laveranues Coles to free agency, the Jets now must find a replacement in the starting lineup…

They have Coles’ replacement already on the roster, and his name is Chansi Stuckey…

He has very good hands hands, terrific quickness and is excellent at running after the catch.”

What they say is true.

But at the same time this leaves a lot of questions such as: Where does David Clowney fit in the picture, Should New York go to the draft and Should Gang Green bring in a veteran just as back up ‘insurance’?

Glad Coles is gone! he was no big deal. wish we kept Moss instead of Coles. but now maybe we can get someone tall and fast to compliment Cotchery.

  2. avatar Jeff says:

Hes not a #1 but a goood #2 slot receiver. I still think we need to draft a receiver that can be a threat in the passing game

  3. avatar JesusRevis says:

Start Cotchery and Stuckey, play Clowney as the 3rd receiver, play Keller in the slot. Draft a WR to be our #4, and develop him to become a starter. I’m a big Stuckey fan so I may be a little biased, but I think he is going to be very successful.

  4. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

Come on, Coles did alot for this team over the years, it is going to be hard to replace him. Between Cotchery, Stuckey, and Clowney and a high draft pick we should be just fine though. It has been a great career, we appreciate all that you did for the team Coles.

  5. avatar pkpiazza says:

lets not forget bout marcus henry, he could be good

  6. avatar TheJetFan24 says:

True we can’t forget about Marcus Henry he has speed and height but is still getting accustomed to the game (and spent the season on the practice squad). At least with Stuckey he has some slight advantage over Henry.

  7. avatar JesusRevis says:

slight advantage over Henry? Stuckey had a pretty impressive season last year, nice catch total, a few td’s, what were Marcus Henry’s numbers last year?

  8. avatar TheJetFan24 says:

Alright so major advantage over Henry.

  9. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Hahaha.. agreed

to think back on the season – it was confusing (to put it nicely) how quickly stuckey fell out of favor after a very solid few games to start the season. at one point early on, he looked to be favre’s favorite target. my guess is he failed one of mangini’s pop quizzes and was buried on the bench as a result.

personally i think the guy has a ton of talent. the one thing i hope he learned from LC was toughness. fans on this blog are quick to bash LC because he complained, whined, etc but one thing you absolutely cannot question was his toughness. it takes major stones to go across the middle when you are the smallest person on the field and LC did this regularly when healthy. in that way he was similar to cherbet. i hope stuckey was taking notes and can do the same

  11. avatar P-Cat says:

Yes Coles a reliable receiver, he didn’t stretch the field. My guess is they go to camp maybe with a vet (Galloway?) and see which of the kids shines.

  12. avatar JL says:

Most WRs don’t pay dividends until year 3. I think Coles departure means more playing time for Stuckey and Clowney.

I also think we might pick up and old-timer, if the price is right.

  13. avatar I hate Doug Brien says:

More Clowney, Coles was pretty mad that they traded Chad anyway, I’m glad to see them both go.

  14. avatar ramble914 says:

IMO, Brad Smith can be a good receiver for the Jets. He has the size, speed and running ability to get the job done. His route running has improved each year, and he was the most prolific running QB in college history. I just think he needs a chance to play and get more comfortable doing it.

  15. avatar JesusRevis says:

ramble, it appears most people on this site are not big fans of Brad Smith, but I am with you. Good size, great hands, and great athletic ability. If anyone remembers when Coles was hurt and Smith filled in as the starter he looked very good running routes. I know a lot of that was in preseason, but….

  16. Can someone please tell the Jets that we need a tall receiver?!? 6’2″ or above please!!!

  17. avatar ramble914 says:

    JesRev,

I just think he needs a chance. He has everything we want in a receiver. I don’t know how any one can form a definite opinion yet when he has rarely touched the field. It’s kind of like KC, we really haven’t seen enough.

  18. avatar ramble914 says:

    Tom,

    Brad Smith is 6-2.

  19. avatar Frank says:

Was going over the top available FAs on SI.com — I’d love for the Jets to go after another DE also to play alongside Jenkins and Ellis — I lived in San Diego for several years and got to watch Olshansky play — he is very good and maybe a bit under the radar?

I like Stuckey too but I’m not sure he has enough speed to really stretch the defense… not really sure as he was always used as a middle of the field slot guy. I guess that’d be what Clowney is for as a #3 WR, but it would be nice to be able to have a field stretcher that could play out of a normal pro HB/FB/TE/2WR set and be a play-action guy.

  20. avatar ramble914 says:

I wish they would stop using B. Smith on those stupid trick plays, thats why everyone is down on him, they never work, but thats not his fault. He should be given a legitimate shot at playing wide receiver, not running end arounds.

  21. avatar JesusRevis says:

Frank, Stuckey would not be used to stretch the field, that is where Clowney has to be effective.

Ramble, yes, Smith is 6″2 and yes he has not been given a full shot yet.

  22. avatar Fred says:

I think between Cotchery, Stuckey, Clowney, LEON, Brad Smith, and most importnatly DUSTIN KELLER, whoever is quarterback for us next year will have a solid group of guys to throw to.

  23. avatar ramble914 says:

    Frank,

I mentioned him the other day on a post. He is ideal size, gives maximum effort, and can play the run. He is a little deficient on his pass rush, but would be a quality addition.

  24. avatar JesusRevis says:

Ramble, those plays were because of Mangini. I have a feeling from Rex Ryans straight forward attitude that he is not going to be using many trick plays.

  25. avatar ramble914 says:

I hope not, they never or rarely work.

  26. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Darius heyward bey anyone?

  27. avatar mannyfresh says:

Yesss!!! my cries have been heard!!!! About time they take a chanci on stucky.. He got speed. He is young. He has great hands. He is Stucky yeeeaaahhhh!!!

  28. avatar Dan in Ok says:

Marcus Henry is 6′ 4″. Let’s develope him.

  29. avatar sec334 says:

Marcus Henry might be good if given the chance. It seems our young receivers have a lot of potential…little experience. Clowney was amazing during the pre season. I know it isn’t regular play but it has to count for something. He has produced when given the chance thus far, why wouldn’t he continue to do so?
Unless he turns out to be injury prone. They know our offensive system better than any FA or Draft option. Cotchery, stucky, clowney.henry might be pretty amazing. we also have one of the best TE in the game. Keller has mad potential…looking forward to his maturation.

  30. avatar ridinmywave says:

I just saw that roy williams requested a trade out of dallas, for a 4th or so he wouldn’t be bad if the jets really feel like getting help at safety….

  31. avatar Brad says:

ridinmywave- I like Heyward too- so fast – 4.30 amazing! And he is around 6’2″. great athlete! was a former track star, so im not sure how good his hands are or his route running, but he has a nice solid muscular frame.
Also- Cimini just reported on his blog that the Jets have officially cut Moore!

  32. avatar JesusRevis says:

ridinmywave, he is the most overated player in the NFL, not worth it.

  33. avatar JesusRevis says:

A lot of Heyward-Bay fans here, I’m one of them.

    Moore just got cut?

  34. avatar Brad says:

JesusRevis – Thats what Ciminiblog is reporting – Moore is officially cut!

  35. avatar JesusRevis says:

This is very strange, why did they wait so long?

Thanks for the heads up though.

I hope they have a free agent replacement in mind.

    Stacy Andrews???

Roy Williams would be an excellent addition to the jets(of course depending on the compensation they would have to give up)

A tall, rangy target is a neccesity for the jets. Pair him with cotchery and keller and your looking at a difficult to group to match up with.

Considering the shaky situation at qb, the jets would be smart to incorporate a WR who can make up for inaccurate throws from the quarterback, a la Eli Manning with Plaxico Burress.

  37. avatar Mad Maries Meatballs says:

    did you say mustard?

  38. avatar JesusRevis says:

They are talking about the safety Roy Williams Mad Maries Meatballs

  39. avatar jetfanATL says:

    Another WR on the roster…

Everyone is going deep on Jets roster for replacements for Coles even down to Marcus Henry. I agree with those who say it will be tough to replace Coles’ toughness and production but maybe a committee can pick up the slack. anyone know anything about Wallace Wright as a WR? He’s obviously super valuable on STs but does he have any potential for catching a few balls? I never watched him in college or anything so looking for insights.

  40. avatar Mad Maries Meatballs says:

    Manning….lobs it…burress alone…TOUCHDOWN New York

  41. avatar Igs says:

Oh my god, stuckey… this is a joke. what is this guy talking about?

  42. avatar Bent says:

I’ve thought for a long time that Stuck would replace Coles when he left the Jets. He was an awesome college player – at least a third round talent – that only slid because he ran slow at the combine because he was still getting over a stress fracture in his foot.

He was excellent last year when not buried on the bench

I would like a big name like the rest of you but I am very optimistic about Stuckey and if we go into the season with Stuck and Cotch starting, Clowney as a deep threat, Henry as a red zone target and Smith as a utility guy (with Wallace Wright purely a special teamer), I would be optimistic that we would get decent production from them, with Keller one of the other primary targets. If they do add a name, great, but I like our upside here.

Clearly I am in the minority, but I’m willing to see what we have here. WR is perhaps the easiest position to trade for if they disappoint in preseason.

JetsfanATL: Wright was not hugely productive in college either, but I’d retain him just for specials and spot duty. He’s looked reasonable in preseason/garbage time over the last few years, but I don’t think he’s likely to emerge as a full time WR.

  43. avatar sec 332 row 21 says:

    just released brandon moore

  44. avatar psorlando says:

Bent…I agree with your last comment. Stuckey played much better last year than his playing time suggested. With Mangini you never knew the rationale for playing time. I too am unconcerned about the need to bring in any receivers necessarily.

  45. avatar JesusRevis says:

Bent, I agree about Stuckey. Lets give him a chance.

What a surprise, lgs disagrees! Wow! For once lgs id like to hear what you would like the Jets to do, all you do is complain and complain. Go get a tampon and when you get back I would like a list of what your whiny ass would like to do, what would satisfy you.

And dont give me vague answers like “win a championship”, “improve”

    I want a specific answer

  46. avatar john r says:

i have said this name before, and will say it again. Jeremy Maclin is talent that cannot be passed on if he is still there.

also people told me that harrell was a system QB and so will be a bust in the NFL. if that is true then Ray Lewis is a system LB who will be a bust for the jets

he has had a great career but so did farve and you saw where that got us.
