With nothing official from the team this morning, Cimini writes on his blog that things aren’t official, according to Scott’s agent as of 10AM in contradiction to an NFP report earlier this morning.
The contract is believed to be a five-year deal in the neighborhood of $37.5 million. If Scott enjoys his visit — at this point, it’s more of a formality — the deal will be finalized.
“I talked with (GM) Mike Tannenbaum last night and through the night,” Lewis told the Daily News. “We got close enough on the parameters to make it worth it for Bart to take a trip up there. It’s the players’ decision. He has to say, ‘I love it, I want to be here.’”
One website, NationalFootballPost.com, reported it as a done deal, but Lewis said “that’s absolutely not the case.” By the end of the day, though, Jets coach Rex Ryan is expected to have his man.
The Jets are also waiting to hear from Steelers G Chris Kemoeatu, whom they made a $4 million-a-year offer to early this morning. He’s weighing an offer from the Steelers, too.
It means that the Jets were willing to budge the $500K per year that the Ravens weren’t which is making Scott happy.
So the big fish for the Jets are Kemo and Scott. If my math is right (which is rarely is), including expected rookie salaries and cap escalators, those moves might still leave the Jets in the $13-15 million range at a minimum of useable space for free agents … it all depends on what the guaranteed money is and what the first year of salaries look like … generally they are low.

Why in the world have we not brought in Dominique Foxworth?…..
-
does that number include the $5 mill to revis?
-
Both these guys are coming. And they are great great moves…now let’s focus on Canty at DE. That would shore up all weak starting positions.
Draft Wr/Cb in round 1 of the draft and work on depth the remaining rounds.
It seems that Rex is having a voice and that is definitely a good thing.
-
we should make a run for dre bly
-
The Jets are not one of the 4 teams Canty has scheduled to visit.
-
foxworth is far and away the best cb available… bly is a scrub
-
I dont see the Canty thing working so Im starting to believe were targeting a D End for our #17 pick
It looks like Tyson Jackson from LSU will be available then and many project him as a 3-4 DE.
-
hmmm.
so which direction do we head with the extra cap space?
there’s not a qb worth overpaying. do we go after a corner, and if so which one?
-
We r not a 3-4 anymore.
we will play 4-6
-
no to bly!
Ivy or stick with lowery
-
I highly doubt we run a base 4-6 it will be a base 3-4 with the 4-3 and 4-6 used situationally
-
Jackson is overrated, I definitely don’t see first round value from this kid. For a lighter guy at End, eventhough he’s 290- he’s 6’4, so he’s got a trim build, I would expect more quickness. He also gives up on a lot of plays and that reminds me of a guy we drafted last year, a move I don’t want to repeat.
I think his fit is definitely as a 3-4 end but I think he’d be a serious reach at 17.
I also think Orakpo and Johnson are solid but they may be off the board and I also think they are 3-4 Olb’s- definitely Johnson, which we don’t need at all. They could become what Gholston should’ve been.
I still like D.J. Moore at 17. But they could fill it via free agency I suppose but please not with Foxworth. Right now the glaring 3 need positions (Assuming ILB and G are fulfilled) are DE, CB and WR.
I think we need to really cement starters there, a guy on the rise- especially on defense who can fit in with Rex. I like Elam coming back and I think he can be versatile and mix it up on 1st/2nd down but I ultimately like Lowery back there next to Rhodes.
If the Jets grab a Cb, I like a guy like Karl Paymah as opposed to the Foxworths, Boddens of the world, then Hakeem Nicks would be awesome.
But definitely DE, WR and CB come to light if these moves are made. And I think if we can sign two via FA- the other can come in Rd 1. But I feel Canty is almost a must and would definitely fit in perfect.
-
The next move we make should either be for leonhard or for a QB/WR those should be the next options… Ray lewis will only be looked at so the PSL’s will be sold for next year
-
Bent:
Did you see the report that the “Skins signed Heynesworth to 7 year $ 100 million (thats right one hundred) contract. That comes out to slightly over $14 million per year. This is the year of the trenches. It all starts there.
-
Chris,
Yea i cant say ive seen much tape of T Jackson, just based on what ive read in mock drafts, I definatly like Orakpo and Maybe out of Penn State. Orakpo should def be off the board at #17, but i think maybin is too small for 3-4 de right?
If Jackson is a reach at #17 but hes the highest rated 3-4 DE on the board we might have to grab him. I do like DJ Moore out of Vandy too tho. Im not completly set at getting a DE with our first pick but i think we definatly need to upgrade that position.
We should leave K Coleman on the team for subbing and in case of injury but id like to see another starter there
-
canty is going to look to cash in that’s probally the reason why the cowboys didn’t lock him up.
-
Bassett, ZING! Nicely done. No hank/naples, this is just another year of stupid and irresponsible spending by daniel snyder. 41 m guaranteed to haynesworth- absent a thuderdome no-capped future, that is a gigantic, enormous risk — or as some may say ginormous.
-
so says hank at 11:00 am, almost 6 hours after the new broke
-
Sure Scott brings a very physical game to our D, but stopping the run was our strongest asset last year. WE DON”T NEED HELP THERE. We need big time help in the pass. IF, and IF he comes over, what are we doing with Thomas, Gholston, Barton, Trusnick and Spencer ?
-
Any word on Jim Leonhard?
I was sure he would have been signed by now -
Hank,
Barton is a FA and will not be back, trusnick and spencer? who cares? Thomas and Gholston are OLB’s Scott will play inside and take bartons spot.
We could always get better at stopping the run especially when big jinx was too tired or hurt to play last year. Plus from what i hear Scott is very good at covering TE’s etc.. which was our biggest problem on D last year. Short passes, TE’s etc…
-
thomas and gholston are a olbs, bartons a free agent,, and the other two are backups……if you didnt know those things you should keep your opinions to yourself
-
EddieC:
My comment top Bent was not as a “News Flash”. This is a follow up to our conversation yestersay that I feel this year the guys in the trenches will see deserving $$$$$ jump across the board, althought $100 milion ????
-
So according to Wikipedia Bart Scott is already a Jet
-
Bart Scott sign the freaking contract. Destiny compels you
-
Scott is exceptional at covering TE’s and RB’s out of the backfield, he upgrades every facet of our defense Hank.
-
Another small thing about the B Scott situation is that both him and VG are from Detroit. Hopefully Scott can mentor VG.
-
EH:
We can always get better at everything right? But our team was 7thform the top in rush D and ( I believe) about 7th from the bottom in Pass D. Now, tell me which one will you throw the BIG bucks at?
-
Any word on the anquan boldin situation. Not that I think the jets were ever after him but now that coles in gone?
-
Hank,
Look game-by-game at the stats. By the end of the year, with a worn down Jinx and an aging Barton behind him the team was getting ran over. I was at the Buffalo game (which we should have lost) and when Fred Jackson is shredding your defense, at home, then you have problems. To say that signing average to slightly above-average secondary players is more important than locking up the #1 LB free agent is absurd. If you make a team one dimensional by stopping the run, then it’s much easier to defend against that team’s offense.
-
3 OLB- forgot to mention Pace- with BT and VG
3 DE- Ellis, Coleman, and Devito- team was high on him last season, hopefully he continues to improve and impress,
ILB -Harris and Bart Scott would be great in the middle
DT- Jenkins, Pouha, mosley
With these guys being the main players playing in the front seven, we will have many options to bring in different looks to confuse the opposing offense.
Cant Wait!!! -
I cannot be more giddy .. Scott will be the best Jet linebacker since .. well .. me .. Lance Mehl .. .
please let this be true ..also like Moore at #17 ..
-
we work on our secondary we will have 1 of the most complete defense in the league especially if we can move gholston to de.
-
WEEI in boston is confirming Bart Scott to the jets……
-
Always thinking ahead Bent, Faneca’s contract is only guaranteed through next year right? At that point they can cut him whenever they deem necessary. If the Jets are able to pull off these 2 signings, they will set themselves up quite nicely for the draft.
-
is it official bent?
-
They better get as many defensive studs as possible because…
You cannot attract a proven receiver without a proven QB.
Our RB situation is thin, TJones over 30, Leon the only playmaker.
Our O-Line will be a bit worse next year with Faneca(Most sacks at his position), and Woody aging (36 years), and Moore gone, as well as Baker’s blocking.
Our front office has a Fantasy Football feel to it.
Good teams do not throw $$ at the free agent market, they target and sign players that will fit their team.
We are very similiar to Washington, and Oakland, in the free agent world, overpaying players that their current team deems not worthy of the $$. -
Ham.
Yea, Maybin is really a 235lb guy. I think I’ve read he’s bulked up a bit but that quick weight is only going to slow him down and I think he is doing it more to impress the ‘number lookers’. He for me is a project but could be very good. If I running a team, maybe Lions, Chiefs, etc- I’d take a shot on him early 2nd rd and work him into an Inside Backer who can move around and create mismatches. Almost like a smaller version of Justin Tuck.
He’s got a ton of athletic ability but he won’t translate to the NFL the same way he did in college. He’ll need to be re-invented a bit but it could work. Just not sure he’s what the Jets need.
Watch tape of D.J. Moore. Truthfully, I think he can be every bit as good as Revis.
As for Canty. He’s going to get a contract very similar to Scott’s. I’m thinking 5 yrs $35-40m with about $15mm guranteed. The Jets can make that work. Also- the Cowboys are not scared of money. If they want this guy, they’ll keep him. They are letting him go because they have Marcus Spears, people inside the organization like Hatcher and they have a very good rotation at OLB with Ware, Ellis and Anthony Spencer who they really love- any of those guys can put a hand down as well. I also think they like the versatility of Ratliff. So, they are not shying away from him because of money, I think they just feel he is disposable as this point.
-
J,
Tell me the wisdom of keeping EVERY SINGLE PLAYER from a team that went 9-7 last year? Please enlighten me. You are right, god forbid we try to get younger, better alternatives at any positions, lets just stay the course with “Our Guys” just because they were on the team already. Brilliant.
If you are comparing the signing of Bart Scott who will be the QB and leader of the entire defense for us, for slightly less than 8 mill a year, to the signings of Haynesworth ($41 mill gaurunteed to player that hasn’t played a full season yet) and D’Angelo Hall (10 mill a year for a player that has been jettisoned by 2 teams including the Raiders in the last 12 months) then I am going to insist Bassett implement mandatory drug testing on this site before you are allowed to post.
Good point though, about teams targeting players that fit their team and signing them, wonder when the jets will learn to do this? Oh, wait, it seems they have already, or were you not around last year when we signed the best LG on the market to replace one of the worst, traded for the best available NT to replace a gaping hole and signed one of the best OLBs on the market in Pace to fill another one. And we are at it again, ILB, check, RG, check, safety and corner soon to follow I’m sure.
I realize you get a relationship with the players on the team already, but seriously, grow up.
-
Brendan:
I agree with you on Jinx, but you fail to see that Harris was out most of the year and was not 100% when he did come back. With him rested and healthy, stopping the run WILL NOT be a major need, specially with Rex resting/scheeming Jinx this tear.
Maybe you misread my comments, I said spending the BIG bucks there is not as important. NEVER said for us to sign an ” average to slightly-above average DB. Lord, we all know we have tooooo many of those !!!!
-
hank/naples: Were you serious when you asked what the Jets are going to do with Barton, Spencer and Trusnik?
-
Now we need to sign Leigh Boden.
-
Sec108,
You got me all wrong.
I could care about the players, no interest in anything except the Gameday. Last year we signed an aging overated guard who gave up the most sacks at his position in the league!
Signing guys is great, results are what I am looking for, so tell me what was so great about Pace, he dissapeared, Jenkins was a stud for 11 games then he dissapeared, we could not get a yard on the ground to get a 1st down with “The best guard” as you say.
I have no problem getting rid of players that do not produce, but why sign a guy like Moore to big $$, and then cut him? Consistency Wins Championships, Free Agent Signings sell tickets! and newspapers. -
According to ESPN Sportscenter and John Clayton…this deal is DONE
-
it’s official
-
NICE!
5 years – $40MM
-
Electric Ham
Tyson Jackson would be perfect at 17, let’s hope we get him. -
J,
you sign a guy like Moore to a new deal because he was underpaid, with a big roster bonus due this season as a decision point on the player. They obviously tried to rework his deal and it didn’t work out for the usual reason, the player believes his value to be more than the team deems him worth (see Coles, Laverneus).
I just don’t get the reaction to it is all, he was a decent player, nothing more, nothing less, the idea that we cant replace is crazy, if we get Kemouate from Steelers I will be more than happy with the whole situation, its the nature of the beast in the NFL.
I agree to an extent, target your core guys on the team and keep them together, I think we have done that, Kerry Rhodes and Cotchery got new deals last year before they could hit free agency, this year they will likely re-up Mangold and Leon, and next year I bet we redo Revis, D’Brick and Harris too.
You were wrong about Woody, he’s not 36, will be 32 this season.
-
sec108, I agree with you and would like to add it’s not only who you sign, but what scheme do they thrive in?
Example – Hall to Oakland last year, he went from a cover two, to a man to man. It’s not that he was a bum he just couldn’t thrive in that scheme. So they sent him packing.
This is why the Scott move is key, it’s the scheme.
-
hank/naples: I love harris but he has already had 2 injuries that have kept him out of significant playing time. Besides, are you comfortable with Spencer or Trusnik starting opposite him?
-
Awesome move. But gentleman, Leigh Bodden is a terrible cover corner, he will only survive in a cover 2 and Tyson Jackson is not the guy you want. We need a pro-ready player, which you can get at 17. And there are enough positions if need and enough players that can fit, IE: Hakeem Nicks, D.J. Moore, or Heywerd Bey. If there is one spot in the draft where Rd 1 is weaker, at least for true players at their position it would be DE. That’s why I think Chris Canty is so crucial…
-
Sec 108,
Sorry for my incorrect age w/Woody.
My point is that the teams with a stable ownership/Front Office seem to have a plan. Our front office resembles a drunkin sailor at times. No rhyme or reason for some of the signings/cuts.Love Scott, hope we have a Ngata to play in front of him, and a Lewis, and a Suggs to play next to him. That is why they call it a TEAM game. I hope the D plays well because our offense is going to hurt to watch. 1 Playmaker Leon, maybe Keller.
-
J- players like Ngata are a result of the system. And I think Rex will do a better job with Jenkins. Although I think Jenkins is entirely overrated because of fatigue/ injury/ etc, it’s clear he is dominant when in the game. I think with a rotation at NT, possibly drafting a solid guy in mid rds- like a Moala out of USC, we’d be fine. Also- I think Pace will be very productive at OLB assuming we can get a big bodied run stalwart at DE…Chris Canty!!!!! And our corners- obviously Revis will force Qb’s to hold onto the ball and that will create turnovers. I’m really not worried about the way Scott fits in. He knows the system and we have plenty of playmakers. I agree we need a starting end and reserve nose but that can be easily acquired given the right moves.
-
Chris,
Ngata is a stud in any system , he cannot be blocked one on one, and is as athletic for his size as anyone in the league.
-
J,
I really don’t get the gloom and doom from you. Jenkins will be every bit the player Ngata is and then some, what we really need is a player like Kelly Gregg (the other NT/DE) the Ravens use judiciously to keep the line fresh and consistensly stop the run.
As for the drunken sailor bit, stop believing everything you read, the Jets have always been portrayed negatively in the mainstream media (the very reason Bassett started this site) and last year was no different. The PLAN was to fill the holes we had in free agency and trades, our needs were LG, NT, OLB, RT, so we went out and got the best available players to fill those holes and paid them handsomely (Faneca, Jenkins, Pace, Woody). Did we overpay a bit? Sure, but we had needs and we addressed them, this was defined as “desperate” by the media, mainly because it was the Jets. All worked out to varying degrees by the way. Faneca wasn’t his pro bowl self, granted, but he was playing with a new guy to either side of him for the first time in his career, and he is still one of the best pulling guards in the game, a big reason TJ shined this year. Jenkins did get hurt and fall off (with the rest of the team) after 11 games, sh* t happens, can’t predict injuries, he was a beast when he was in there, and judging by what Haynesworth just got form the skins he is now officially a bargain. Pace started off well and dropped off in sacks reportedly because he was asked to cover alot more later in the year, I’m sure Rex will put a stop to that. Woody was adequate, all in all I was happy. This year we seem to be following the same plan, figure out what your needs are, target the players that can best help you and sign them early, even if you have to overpay a little. Bart Scott and Chris Kemeoatu both make sense to me, nothing desperate or drunken sailorish about it.
Maybe its just me.
-
Sec 108,
Nice retort.
Results in my opinion are only worth mentioning if team had something to show for it, I have been watching this team for 40 years.
I want to go to the Superbowl to watch the Jets, not interested in nice seasons anymore, my time is running out. Not sure how old you are, but yours might be running out as well. LOL -
J,
I am not that young either, born months after the Jets only Superbowl appearance and victory unfortunately, I have been a season ticket holder for many inept seasons, believe me. I want results as much as anyone, but I guess we just have differing opinions of the front office and their approach, fair enough.
If you are as old as me you remember the the Leon Hess/Steve Gutman era? I know Woody isn’t the Mara’s or the Rooney’s but I consider this regime a major upgrade.
-
Sec108
I definitely agree that the Front Office has some made some good moves but there definitely has to be a focus on age. Assuming Kemoeatu comes as well, the moves today are tremendous.
To get players that are very solid and get them at what should be their perceived prime- is a great win.
But these ‘regime’ still needs to prove a lot. Because there has been blunders on players, money, draft, etc. Been some key wins but you need to win more than you lost and both off and on the field- this group has yet to do that consistently. I think this can be the changing year and although I’m still skeptical- I’m not quite sure I’m sold yet but we’re off to a good start. A key DE signing followed by drafting a CB, or WR in Rd 1 and then solid depth in the later and I think we should have a positive year ahead. I love the coach and I also think Mr. Ratliff may have some magic.
-
Sean;
My mention of Barton, Spencer and Trusnik was not regarding $$$$$, I know the last two are making squat. I’m questioning playing time to allow two Guys, Gholsten and Trusnick, that have tremendous upside to develop. We now have 8-9 linebackers and only, and with Rex you really don’t know, four can/should play at a time. I assume that Harris, Pace, Scott will get 70 to 80% of playing time with 5-6 others spliting about 20%. If you do the mth, that’s not really much time to do much. And we still have to address our Pass D BIG time !!
In answer to your question, to be honest, I would have loved to give Harris Trusnik for a while and Pace Golston for a while but now, we know Scott will be in the THICK of things.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Scott in the locker room, that’s where he will make his biggest impact !!!!
-
Sec108,
The mere fact that you mention/compare Woody and T, to Hess and Guttman is scary enough.

Well, Ryan is def. not shy about getting “his guys.” Here’s hoping that he gets Kemo and Scott, because if he can’t it leaves a couple of gaping holes. I have faith in Ryan. Cautious faith that he has a vision and can enact it.
