Jets Finish Lito Sheppard Acquisition

After a medical check, Erik Boland reports on his blog that the Lito Sheppard deal is done and that Jim Leonhard arrives in town tonight to have dinner with some team officials.

The Jets did not disclose the terms of the deal but it is for a fifth round draft pick this April and a conditional pick next April.

It’s not known if the deal was accompanied by a new contract or what exactly the conditions on next year’s pick are other than that it can escalate to a second-rounder.

  1. would it be wrong to hope that it is a third rounder next year instead of a fouth?? ha, I don’t think you’ll hear fans from any other franchise hope for that

  2. good now we go get a safety and the draft could be all offense.

  3. id rather have him then anyone else to play opposite revis right now that was available

  4. chris his contract is very reasonable compared to what these corners are getting now a days leonhard will be signed tonight and our defense is set.

  5. Strictly Offense this April I see and Monday if Chris Canty is still available I say go after him, Hes a player like Ngata that can move around the line and play different positions.

  6. I agree that we will go mostly offense in draft with these moves, but stoll need depth on the D Line. A big molly to backup Jenks is a must.

  7. you’d think Sheppard would be insisting on a new contract..

  8. If we can get Chris Canty, our draft needs will be very clear.

  9. We still need an in-line tight end. It would be nice to get one before the draft. That would leave a big WR as our only real need, we could go BPA after that. No FA WRs i would like for the Jets.

  10. Canty has to come cheap, if not your better off taking your chances in the draft or waiting till next yrs free agents…We need a true 3-4 DT to backup Jenkins much more than we need an end.
At this point I would say Lito is just happy to be out of philly they just extended hanson to a decent extension paying him more than lito so lito was getting buried in the depth chart…he was in the doghouse in philly….

  11. Why was Sheppard in Reid’s doghouse? Anyone know the details?

  12. If the pick next year is a conditional 2nd rounder based on playing time, we are getting ripped off. I hope not.

In any trade you have to believe the player you are obtaining is going to be injury-free and play every desired down. So why would our front office believe is worth a 09 mid rounder and ‘10 high draft choice, if:

    a) his current value is at an all time low.

    b) the going rate for draft picks is very high (see: Cassell, Matt)

    c) we expect him to play every down.

  13. I hope Mark Sanchez fas into the Jets lap!

  14. no sanchez ratliff is going to be the truth

  15. I think with the Scott signing and this trade, it puts us in position to draft a OLB/MLB depending on where Scott plays. I think our pick will be either Malaugha(sp?) or Cushing from USC. Both are strong, physical LB’s. But if Ryan decides to go offense, I think it will probably be a WR but we could get a decent one in the 2nd round.

  16. Whom ever is the QB, at least they will have a good line in front of them!

  17. I think with the Scott signing and this trade, it puts us in position to draft a OLB/MLB depending on where Scott plays. I think our pick will be either Malaugha(sp?) or Cushing from USC. Both are strong, physical LB’s. Then we move Gholston to RE and our Defense is set if we sign Leonhard. But if Ryan decides to go offense, I think it will probably be a WR but we could get a decent one in the 2nd round.

  18. He was in the doghouse because he spoke out against the samuel signing…basically he said i start or im traded and since you just spent this huge sum of money on samuel i know im not starting….Sheldon Brown was the safer of the 2…Compared to Sheldon Lito was more willing to gamble so he gets burnt more than Sheldon Brown…Sheldon is safer he does not gamble as much. Thats not to say Lito isnt a really good corner its just Sheldon was a more reliable corner

  19. MHC why would we go ILB/OLB??? We have Pace, Gholston, and Thomas at OLB. We also have Harris, Scott, and a few others at ILB. Linebacker is the least of our worries. We need a DE which I hope we can possibly get Olshansky since I think he will be cheaper than Canty. It would also be nice to get maybe Dan Campbell as our blocking TE and if we are unable to get a backup NT we can draft one. But for the most part this seems like it is going to be an offensive draft.

  20. Both SC LB’s are gonna be great pros, but a WR has to be a priority.

  21. Gholston cannot play RE, he is not big enough, in a 3-4 defense the ends are not as much the pass rushers as they are more space eaters and the “hybrid” linebackers are usually your pass rushers….Thats why good 3-4 defenses have large DE’s. The DT (Jenkins) takes ideally takes up 2 o linemen and at least one DE has to take on 2 linemen. So your DE have to be bigger and mroe physical then say a 4-3 that can have at least one speed rusher. Thats why we have so many “hybrid” linebackers on our team i.e. Pace, Thomas, Gholston

  22. Besides the mentioning of Canty there’s Igor from SD who I think is underrated. There ws CB Mc Fadden. but I’m not sure how he woul pan out.

  23. Finally someone else mentions Olshansky from SD… I have been saying his name and no one seems to want him yet he is a good 3-4 end. Though Le’sean I would not want McFadden. We obviously aren’t getting him now, but I think he is going to be greatly overpaid. Just because this cb class is nothing special.

  24. I dont see ANY reason to go ILB, but id understand if we got outside. Thomas is 30 and got all of his sacks in the first 4 games of the season, Gholston didn’t do ANYTHING last year (although im not giving up on him, and Pace is a good OLB. Giants, Steelers, Pats, all had many guys that could rush the passer.

We can’t draft based on last years draft we have to draft based on what we have right now. Yes, Gholston was the 6th pick last year, but we cant go on just giving him more chances just because he was. I havent given up on Gholston, but I think if we feel theres alot of potential at OLB thats available we should pick him.

  25. Rob, Thomas is a waste

  26. Igor got cut from San Diego because of his poor work ethic and character issues. You’re not going to want that kind of guy.

  27. We didn’t need Lito to replace Lowery. This is Tannenbaum’s pick, going for the “stars’ again. Lowey should have gotten a full shot in his second season. I,m not very surprised that Rex did not impose himself.

  28. hank… no… just no. go on the knicks blog and go spread nonsense over there

  29. Ryan will be a lot more flexible with his defenses than Mangini was. We don’t have to draft players to fit holes. Just give him football players and he will devise defenses that use their talents.

  30. Jetfavre:

    Your name speaks volumes.

  31. happy about lito..happy about bart..happy about what 2009 could bring (so far)
    Go Jets!!

  32. hank/naples, as do your posts

  33. jo2, agreed, a very exciting start to the offseason

  34. We have really improved the defense but have a net loss on the offense. The first day of the draft has to offense-offense.

  35. i have to agree: Lito over Lowery as the Jets #2 cb any day.

However, Lowery will get his shot and will be good enough…someday.

  36. we need to go offense. Why in the world would we draft another lineback.. I lik ray from usc but we have pace ghloston thomas outside and harris and scott inside.. I think we need to draft 2 receivers and a 3rd running back and a defesne end.. We must take thoss 1st.

  37. Was there a better CB in Free Agency Lito ?
I would put various incentives to improve his contract

  38. MHC2009,

Are you really suggesting we draft and ILB or and OLB? good thing youre not our GM.

This Sheppard trade is a good move, a #2 corner was possibly out number 1 need going into the offseason. Good job Tanny.

Jets will go all offense in the draft

  39. Do we get a draft pick for Vilma?

  40. SouthJerseyJetFan – Gholston is the same size as Demarcus Ware, Terrell Suggs and James Harrison who are seldomly used a Defensive Ends.

  41. DEs in the 4-3, not the 3-4. He was talking about 3-4 DEs, otherwise known as 5-technique DTs.

  42. Lito is a great pick up, we need good CB’s because of the Blitz packages Rex is going to be installing. Having Revis, Lito, Lowery with back ups in Coleman and Ihedigbo CB stable complete.

  43. I really like this deal. It is for a 5th round pick this year, plus a conditional pick in 2010. According to Boland, Jets will get Eagles 5th round pick if they surrender a pick in 2010. The JETS, according to Cimini, also extended his contract 1 year for a total of 4 years.

If the JETS sign Leonhard, then the overhaul of the Defense will be complete.

As to the draft, WRs are very deep in this draft so I see the JETS going for a RB in round 1 and a WR or TE in rounds 2 and 3. Beanie Wells and the kid from Georgia should both be available at #17.

  44. JetOssesed2:

“Lowery will get his shot and will be good enough…someday”

Don’t you see that self gratification must always be now, in a “NY minute”

  45. Demarcus Ware Terrell Suggs and James Harrison are Hybrids as I said they are what ppl called converted defensive ends that are now linebackers they are in between sizes so yes in certain situations they line up and rush the passer like traditional lineman but 9 times out of 10 they are rushing from an upright position. That is why Julius Peppers has said he wanted to go to a 3-4 team because he feels he can be effective as a hybrid linebacker. In the 3-4 the true Ends are space eaters as I said with some ability to rush the QB thats why a DE in the 3-4 is not expected to have high sack totals hs is a hold the fort type of guy with some pass rushing ability. Basically I’m saying you do not draft more linebackers when you have sufficient players in those positions…maybe some late round guys to develop but you dont waste an early rounder…esp with the money we have invested there…

  46. Alright.. let’s ponder needs as they stand now:

Safety – Leonhard will solve that.. probably rotate with Elam..

CB – got Lito, Ivy as a nickel.. lowery in the dime…

    LBs- set, inside and outside

DL – wouldn’t hurt to have depth behind Jenkins at tackle.. Need to upgrade Coleman, opposite Ellis.. Need depth there too…

    OL – set

WR – drop Brad Smith.. trade him to Cleveland (lol) probably the 17th overall will yield us a new WR. Sign Clowney too (Cotchery, Clowney, Stuckey, potential draft pick, Wallace Wright.. maybe 1 more? to start 09)

RB – Leon, TJ, free agent or draft pick at #3, Richardson at FB..probably 1 or 2 more.. Woodhead might be back in training camp..

TE – Keller and…??? we need 2 more, and make em good blockers

QB – KC, Brett part 2 (ratliff, for those that don’t get it), and who else.. a rookie more than likely…

    K – Feely’s re-signing, right? Thought i head that..

P- Hodges sucks.. who’s even out there?

    Let the debate begin…………

  47. Biggest needs are depth everywhere…lol…Big Play WR would be nice, blocking TE’s, Depth at the DL esp DT, safety leonhard will solve that…i would like to see some veteran depth at o line just a veteran min type guy. I would like to see a veteran QB signed…I actually fully believe in Clemens or Ratliff…I would like to see Clemens get his fair shot…But my thought process is better safe than sorry.

  48. Kenyon Coleman is a good 3-4 DE as he stops the run and makes tackles

  49. Jetobsessed2,

As far the WR I agree with you but think the kid we drafted last year Henry should get a chance to win the final spot..tall reciever and had a good career in college. I think he will make a good WR if developed

  50. Lowery is very game but the bottom line is he lacks the speed to keep up with WR we need to move him to safety Lito Sheppard is a good cover corner and is very good in man2 man which a lot of times we will be in if we’re going to be plating an attacking style of D

  51. Breadway12:

I guarante you that if you measure LItos Football Smarts against Lowery’s Ballhawking, Lowery wins hands down !!!

  52. hank/naples – you clearly have a man crush on Lowery. Not that theres anything wrong with that, as you could probably say the same thing about me with Revis. But youre cleary over hyping Lowery, im a fan of the kid but lets see how he bounces back this year after giving up a ton of TD’s last season. Sheppard is a much better corner right now, hands down.

South Jersey, if your biggest needs are depth then thats a good thing

  53. Jesus:
    “Over Hype”?
Just like I was about the only one AGAINST FARVE from the START !!! I’m telling you that we must SLOW down with thwerookies we have . Our suck-up GM can’t, CAN NOT evaluate the draft, therefore he must buy players. We have a staple full of rooks that we must give a chance !!

  54. e boland said we get a 5th rd pick from the eagles in 2010…mr t is the man.

  55. Jetobsessed,

Since you asked, here are the available Punters in free agency & their previous teams:

    Craig Hentrich (Titans)
    Sam Koch (Ravens)
    Hunter Smith (Colts)

Shane Lechler was set to be on the board too, but he re-signed with the Raiders on the eve of free agency with the highest punter contract at $3 million per year over the next 4 years.

  56. Hank, I wasnt trying to offend you but yes, over hype. Lowery is a nice player, I like his attitude and football intelligence, but his reputation as a ballhawk, although it may be true, was not justified based on his performance last season. He was thrown at constantly and only finished with 1 pick. Don’t take it the wrong way, like I saidI really like Lowery, and yes, we should give him a chance. But whose saying we wont be giving him a chance anyway?

As far as Favre, yes I do remember you being against the move, and who knows what would have happened last year if we stuck with Pennington, but that is a question that could never be answered.

As far as Tannenbaum not being able to evaluate talent, come on Hank; Revis, Harris, Leon, D’Brick, and Mangold in 3 drafts is above average for a GM. Trading up for Revis was genius, give the guy some credit.

  57. Lets draft a punter

  58. Juesus:

Ok, You are saying that Tannenbaum can draft, OK we’ll see, but make sure you give Rex SOME credit, OK?
Now as far as Lowerry, Take a look at what he dis last year, Have you?

  59. hank & revis –

this lito trade is great because it gives hanks little buddy, lowry, some time to develop. he was thrown into the fire last year and he struggled at times, but his upside is probably better than lito sheppard.

    i love this move.

do we get another pick for vilma? how did that play out, so he could become a FA, but then sign back with NO. i guess i dont understand why we didn t cover ourselves for that to happen?

  60. Give Rex credit for what Hank? The season hasnt started yet. LOL What the hell are you talking about??

Of course I know what Lowery did last year, ive seen every play of every game atleast 5 times because I am a physco when it comes to the Jets. I DVR every game and watch them over and over again. Lowery made some nice plays, and showed a lot of promise. I dont even necesarily think we are disagreeing on anything about Lowery, I was just responding to your comment that sounded like you were saying Lowery is better than Sheppard, which I do disagree with.

Yeah I did say Tannenbaum can draft, what do you mean “OK we’ll see” ? Didnt you read what I wrote? We already have seen, and the results have been impressive, case closed.

  61. JP losman:

See we must ” GROW ” our talent if we are to be “INVINCIBLE “. There is no ” PURE WAY ” to buy a championship

  62. hank –

who is buying anything? all teams have an = amount to spend each year

what team in the NFL is invincible or ever has been?

since when does any new tork team have time to grow their talent?

you re kind of losing me with what your saying

  63. Geeze Hank, I dont even get a response?

I am one of the few owners of a Dwight Lowery Jersey, I love the kid!!!

  64. jp, that makes 2 of us

  65. Jesus:

Guess what? I’ve had tooooo many BUDS and I’m going to watch th NFL channel. I’ll answer you in the AM.

  66. JP Losman

The new york giants have time to develop their players. Look at their FA history since the day they drafted eli manning. They had one big offseason(Pierce, plax, and mckenzie) but since then they have built the team through the draft and with minor FA signings for depth.

It seems every year the jets are spending in a big way. Not saying that the jets havent spent wisely, just disputing your point that a new york team doesnt have time to develop its talent.

  67. Nick, if you saw Igor play you wouldn’t say such a thing…he’s no joke……character issues? How come suddenly we’re hearing this. That’s SD sabotage man! He’s no Anthony Bryant, Tank Johnson, TO, Romanowski, Pac man.. what the hell do you want? He’s emotional.

  68. I simply cannot take this garbage anymore… I just simply cannot take it. The very fact that we both root for the same team, if you can call what he does rooting, chips away at the very foundation of my soul. How he comes up with and/or truly believes some of the stuff that shows up here is beyond me, it truly is.

I just really need someone to explain to me how Tannebaum is a “suck up” for trading for Lito Sheppard? How does that comment even make sense? He traded for Lito just to kiss his behind?

I also need to know how this move doesnt solidify a major trouble spot that is a our defensive backfield. You bring in a first round , All-Pro talent with top end NFL speed opposite Hell Relle and we are worried about how it will effect Dwight Lowery. I like this Lowery kid but he is not fast enough to keep up with most NFL recievers let alone be corner 1A in Rex Ryans defense.
If his majesty thinks that Rex didnt impose himself on this move, he missed the soundbite from WFAN sitting on his computer in Florida, where Rex glowly praises Sheppard’s talent and fit in this defense. The Ravens use to go after big time corners opposite Chris McAllister, does Samuri Rolle, Deion Sanders ring a bell? It’s how they consistently turned out killer defenses year in and year out. The King of Naples fails to realize that our new coach is the Anti-Mangini and fast, mean, nasty, big time players are what hes about. Not some Boy Scout meeting.
I also cannot hear another word about how he was the only one against the Favre deal. Hating a player infinitely and rooting for his demise when he plays on your team only shows his propensity for being massive jinx and perpetual failure, not the saavy master of all things Jets football.
It’s hard enough being a Jet fan, but its getting downright impossible having to stomach the grossly ridiculous rants of the short sided, last word grabbing malcontent from Naples.

  69. Eddie, much love my man, nicely put.

  70. galaxy –

come on. your telling me that the fans were not calling for fassels head when the giants were not winning, even after he lead them to a SB appearance. tom coughlin has been fired 4 times by the media since he’s been the head coach there.

and how was everyone treating eli up until his team got hot and they won a SB. giants fans hated him.

i read the post everyday. i listen to the mike franscesa dumb ass show. i read this blog daily. i watched as chad pennington got booed out of giants staduim when he got hurt. you really cant sit here and tell me any NY team has that long of a leash. dont mistake the fact that because the giants won, they were awarded that luxury.

i haven t even talked about the yankees and knicks.

and i guess when you say spend every year, you mean this year so far and last year.

  71. hank/naples I have to tell you I like the kids Lowery but it was obvious he lacks the speed to keep up with a lot of the wr’s that are out there. He got beat quite a few times especially when the rest of the league caught up with him. Lito is a proven commodity I’m not saying he’s Lester Hayes but to get a guy like this without having anyone else even up to par or better in this yr’s FA class was a great move it opens more options up for us on DRAFT day. Besides LB CB was an important position to address. Regardless u can bet if we did’nt get Sheppard we would have drafted a CB with our 1st pick
