Jets Give Sheppard a New Contract
Mike Florio reports on PFT that the Jets have extended Lito Sheppard’s deal by two years and added a large bonus next season.
Per a league source, it’s a two-year extension to a contract that has three remaining years.
He’ll get $3 million in 2009, his prior base salary. Thereafter, it’s a four-year, $21 million deal.
On the fifth day of the 2010 league year, Sheppard receives a $10 option bonus.
If Sheppard participate in at least 39 percent of the plays in 2009, Sheppard’s salary escalates by $1.55 million per year for 2010 through 2013, making the four-year package after this season worth $27.2 million.
Of course, the Jets could cut Sheppard before the fifth day of the league year, but he’d be an unrestricted free agent.
If, in the end, he stays for all five years (and participates in at least 39 percent of the snaps this season), he’ll make $30.2 million.
The bonus is wise in that it gives the team a year to determine whether he’s worth the additional investment before committing to him and the option bonus which can easily be pro-rated across the remaining four years of the deal at $2.5 million per year.

In 2010 the option is only ten dollars, awesome.
Isn’t 2010 a no cap year??
Getting Sheppard was a solid transaction, there wasn’t a corner that good on FA and although I love DJ Moore- this does allow the Jets to make a focus on one of the big Wr’s Rd 1 (Cough, cough…Hakeem Nicks!).
Now if they can go get Canty- it will fulfill the solution of adding a playmaker at each level of the defense and will really make this offseason a total success.
I was down on the front office to begin this offseason but I am very happy wi this. Still want Canty but it’s already a success but he would be a huge cherry on top.
Ii would suck if they give up a 5th and a 2nd rounder and then cut him a year later.
Chris,
Canty is not a playmaker, good player, but certainly not a playmaker.
Revis, we obviously don’t see eye to eye football related, so I’m not going to really debate the Canty scouting difference. I’ll just say- look beyond the numbers.
But if you don’t like, or feel they don’t need Canty. What’s the alternative. I think most, especially Calvin Pace and Co., would agree they need a stalwart at the End position. Ellis is aging and diminishing quickly and Coleman is a nice player but imagine how much more effective if he were the 3rd guy in a rotation.

Hey Bassett what a steal for the Jets! They got Sheppard to agree to only getting a $10 option bonus. Boy is he dumb!
….or could this be a “Type O”?
Looking at the Sheppard deal, I think the Jets will be drafting a CB in Rd2 or 3. They need a plan-B if Sheppard does not deserve the $10MM roster bonus.
Great deal….If he is great we give him his loot in an uncapped year…….if he is so-so we rescructure his deal….If he is not very good we cut him and we gave up a 5th for a starting CB. Basically a rental with an option to buy…..I bet he plays his ass off!!
Mr T is God!!!
Jerry- agreed. They still need depth at CB, especially considering at some point Lowery may be best suited at Safety.
But yes, hoping they sign a DE and go WR Rd 1, they still have depth concerns at DT, OL, RB and DB.
Chris, I dont see why you are saying we dont see eye to eye, unless we’ve had previous disagreements that I do not remember, but if you disagree with me on Canty then maybe you would rather check ESPN scouts inc scouting report on Canty, or his run down on Pro Football Prospectus, both very accurate and well-respected sources.
I do look beyond the numbers, but for starters his numbers dont show any sign of him being a play maker. I have the NFL package and i’ve watched at least 20 Cowboys games over the last 2 years, and like I just said Canty is a good player, just not a play maker.
I didn’t say I dont like Canty or that they dont need him, I have said before that I want them to sign Canty and I hope they do, so we have no disagreement there.
Canty will not come cheaply. He will get $6-7MM per, possibly from the Gmen. The Texans just gave Smith $7MM per.
Revis- yea, we disagreed a bit on the overally performance of Mr T’s 3 yrs. Obviously, he is off to a bang right now and with another good signing, or two and strong draft- this will be his best overall offseason. Let’s then hope it translate to on field success as well.
As for Canty- no hard feelings, quite possibly I rate him higher than others. Again- it’s just a perception at this point. I do think he was underused and at times not put in the best positions in Dalls and rightfully so- they have beasts at OLB. And to a certain extent, I wouldn’t want it much different here because the key focus for a strong DE in this system is a guy who will be very stout against the run and create a presence on rushing downs. Their numbers relating to sacks/ pressures/ etc. is not necessarily the ultimate grader.
But yes, glad we agree- I do think he will be very important to these defense and in Ryan’s system- if I agreed he weren’t a playmaker now; then I certainly think he would become one. With our now ILB’s, edge rushers and hopefully a well rotated Jenkins- Canty would excel similar to the ways as a Wahoo.
At this point, I would definitely sign Canty. Then draft Nicks. And then work on NT, RB, OL, DB depth in that order via the draft.
Chris, I would love them to sign him but the price tag might be too high. If they cant get Canty then drafting a D-End early would be a smart move. Coleman is average and Ellis is getting older. Plus we need a backup NT to help out big Jenkins. Overall, Id just say we need depth on the defensive line. CJ Mosely, Mike DeVito, and Pouha just wont cut it. It actually upsets me that Mike DeVito even gets snaps for us.
Devito is very good against the run Revis. Mosley isnt as good against the run but can apply solid pressure. Pouha needs to go and we desperately need seomeone to back up big jenkins.
My hate for DeVito is not necessarily based on his play. I just think he looks disgusting on the field and I want him gone.
shouldnt there be news about leonhard? he was having dinner with the jets tonight
dan, theyre probably eating as we speak
eat faster!!! and sign this guy already
Leonard should order the galaxy. It consists of chopped up chicken cutlets with melted swiss cheese(you can put your own cheese on it if you dont prefer swiss, but thats what i recommend), blue cheese, hot sauce, a touch of onion and lettuce to add a little crunch in your bite, all mixed together in a wrap of your own choice.
I also happen to know that JesusRevis(while he stuffs it a little too much for my liking) makes this “galaxy wrap” very well. Mabye if he made it for Leonard…………………
Hahahaha, The Galaxy, you are too much. It is a delicious wrap though, if I made it for Loenhard he would sign with the Jets for free as long as his contract consisted of The Galaxy everyday for lunch.
sooo, if people think that we need to draft a CB in the 2nd or 3rd round as a future replacement for sheppard then i guess no one sees lowery as a future replacement?

If you paid Mark three galaxies a day, he would lead the nfl in sacks
Mark is a bit undersized for D-End, but on a 3 galaxies a day contract he would definetely be an all pro safety. Although he did just go to the hospital for a cat scan and found out he has arthritis in his left leg, which could effect his quickness and straight line speed.
I’m hoping the Jets can piggyback on the Giants visit by Canty and bring him in for a look. Then, I’d let Rex loose on him and put a little spark in his eye about the possibility of playing in a top-ranked defense where he can be a difference.
Jeez, that seems like a lot of money for a #2 corner.
Or a number 1 corner playing in the #2 spot. every single corner in the NFL would be the #2 corner if they came to the Jets. Hell Relle is in the building
word outta denver is that cutlers pissed off about mcdaniels tryin to trade for cassel and ship him to KC/NWE.. if he doesnt soften his trade stance they should seriously consider making a run at him
Big A, as much as id like to have Canty, it’s not worth giving him that much money. Although Kenyon and Ellis are getting up there in age, they are still both solid starters and I’d rather draft a younger Tyson Jackson who won’t be as much money and could very well be just as good if not better.
I think you want to put Marc as close to the ball as possible. Your talking about a deranged, mentally incapable guy here. You want to give him the most basic instructions that you can think of so that he doesnt have to spend the entire play trying to decipher his responsibilities.
Marc has a lot of heart and mental toughness though and has shown the ability to stay focused in the heat of battle. When he lost his bike he was able to land a new one. Just send him after the quarterback, similar to what Bobby Bushay did in the waterboy. A team like the jets could use a guy like Marc.
The rest of these posters wouldnt understand because their from a different solar system.

Lito Shepard is not a #1 corner. The eagles would have never gone out and signed samuel to the kind of contract they did if he was. With sheldon brown on the roster(who started over shepard and hasnt been on the trade block since last offseason) sheppard was the third CB.
Sheppard is a solid cb, nothing special, but he makes a good duo with revis. Burress made him look like a child during his entire career with the giants before he went to a nightclub, shot himself in the leg, and ruined the giants chances at repeating as superbowl champions.
mrrrr
We’re going to have to wait and see how good Sheppard is when we actually see him play as a Jet. There is no denying he got disrespected and mistreated in Philly, even if he was in Andy Reid’s “Dog House”. Sheppard will have a lot of chances to prove himself since teams will be throwing at him all day in order to stay away from Hell Relle. Who is Andy Reid to even have a”Dog House” anyway? Maybe he should put his 2 sons in his “Dog House”
“Nothing special” doesnt get you voted to the pro bowl twice, Sheppard has massive amounts of talent.
Ive seen enough of sheppard to know what he is. He is a solid corner, and better than anyone on the jets roster not named Darrel Reevis. good trade and good pickup, but dont mistake him for a number one corner.
Come on man, you have nfl sunday ticket, didnt you watch any eagles games wearing your dwight lowerey jersey?
Hahahahahaha
like i said, lets just see what he does in a Jets jersey
Can we stop posting on the Jets blog at 10:00 on a Sunday and figure out what we’re doing tonite? Anyone going into town later Galaxy?
*Saturday
Fred, I think Canty is a better pass rusher than Coleman. Jackson would be a replacement for Ellis. Either way, we need an upgrade/depth at the position. I would probably pick Jackson at 17, if he’s there.
Big A
You dont know what your talking about….at all.
Thanks, Galaxy. Just my opinion.
Big A
Take your opinion and shove it. Its people like you that make this “blog” dumber than the bus for the down syndrome kids in high school.
Thanks again, Galaxy. Too bad you have no class. Puffed up in your conceit…
If your so smart and knowledgable, go work for the Jets FO. Better yet, keep posting here so we can see how clueless you can be, as just about everybody does eventually.
I’ll keep posting my opinion when I have time.
Thanks, again.
The people that think we should draft a CB early for a replacement to the guy we just traded for/signed really must either not be thinkers or not have any faith in the FO.
On the Lito subject though, I’d still like to know exactly what the stipulations are for the conditional draft pick.
I’m reading the conditional pick to mean that we give the Eagles a 5th this year, and depending on Lito meeting certain conditions, we give up a 3rd or 4th AND take back the 5th next year. Either way, Lito will be playing his ass off for his next big payday…
Mmmm… incentive…. good!
