Jets Interested in Robert Royal? Please No!

by Bassett on February 28th, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Lisa Zimmerman of Sirius Radio broke on her blog yesterday that the Jets are inviting Bills Tight End Robert Royal in for a visit with the team

… with a hole at tight end, the team is bringing in Robert Royal who played the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills and was with the Redskins for four years prior to that.

I knew it was a thin TE class, but damn. I didn’t have really high impressions of Robert Royal, but a quick look to my 2008 Pro Football Prospectus has this to say about Royal:

One of the worst starters in the NFL at any position. Royal has hands like patio blocks, fumbles too many of the passes he does catch, and gets flagged too often to justify his rep as a blocking tight end.

It goes on to say more, but it doesn’t get better. A look back to 2007 praises his prowess at his “wide variety of drive-killing abilities.”

  1. this actually made me laugh! lol…anyone like that shouldnt be playing in the NFL

  2. avatar BigKatFan says:

I saw Robert Royal play once. He fumbled away his ONLY catch of the game.

  3. avatar jetfavre says:

this was my only worry about sexy rexy… too defensively oriented… this move would make me sick to my stomach

  4. avatar Fred says:

hes gonna be a backup TE… I dont see how much he could possibly mess up.

  5. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

he’s a bum i take my chances on a rookie in the draft

  6. avatar klecko says:

chris baker will be in the pro bowl if tom brady is healthy.we never used him right.now royal flush! come on

  7. avatar jetobsessed2 says:

    that is hilarious!

  8. yea there are better options for a backup TE…remember backups are 1 injury from being starters you always want a guy that u trust to start as a backup….so Fred thats what he could mess up..lol

  9. avatar JetOrange says:

The TE that I’m looking at is Will Heller out Of Seattle, Size, no vertical threat , good blocker, a little Special teams. Sean Ryan is looking for a job, I wouldn’t mind Sean….OT Wayne Hunter was a TE in college, I say that because the Ravens went with six OL at times last year

Myers from the daily news says
“Vilma signed a five-year, $34 million deal with the Saints on Friday afternoon with $17 million guaranteed. Tannenbaum put no protection in the trade language that would account for the Saints signing Vilma once free agency had started. While the Saints technically did nothing wrong, their behavior violates the spirit of the deal. The Jets should file a grievance with the league office.”

Do you guys think that the Jets can make a deal and not give back the 4th round pick they owe the Saints??

Is Parcells the only one that realizes that there is a human aspect to this game. This is why HE AND Belichick quit once Woodypecker bought the Jets.

TENNENBAUM HAS NO IDEA ON EVALUATING NEW NFL TALENT !!!!

  12. avatar FernandoQ says:

I remember Tanny interviewing after that deal was made, he showed respect for NO and said he trusts them to do the honorable thing, funny thing is Tanny would NOT pull a stunt like that , one that will bite the GM in the butt down the road because now u know not to expect professional respect from that guy. Techincally they did no wrong but NO should not accept the 4th rd. Pick for violating the spirit of the deal which Yes! Means something to these GMS!

I would love to hear T’s opinion on what just transpired …

  13. avatar Fred says:

what exactly did NO do wrong?

  14. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

COME ON TANNY AND REX dont do this dont get Bart Scott, Lito Sheppard, Jim Leohnard and then turn around and get him I want Bubba Franks back before this joke.

  15. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

reports say we get a 5th rd pick in 2010 as part of the lito trade.

  16. avatar joe says:

the geeks hatred o f robert royal is something you ought to apply brainpower toward. watching him on the field, royal is really tough in individual matchups, and is a good guy to throw to when nobody else is open – like 3rd down

  17. Hi all, Don’t freak out yet. Haven’t heard that they signed him, just that they were talking to him. I’ll let you know if I hear any updates!

  18. avatar Nikolas says:

A bad GM is one who breaks the Bank and throws around money and draft picks to get above average talent, while for players like Pennington, Vilma, Coles and Baker can get nothing in return.

  19. avatar JesusRevis says:

That wasnt exactly an endorsing run down of Royal, if its true I really hope they dont sign him.

Hank are you taking over as the new leader of the “we hate Tannenbaum crew” ?

Cant evaluate talent? LOOK AT THE PLAYERS HES DRAFTED IN 3 YEARS AS GM!!!!

And dont give me a list of the guys who didnt pan out, because every team has those, but Revis, Harris, Leon, Mangold, D’brick .. thats 3 pro bowlers and 1 alternate. HOW MANY GMS DO YOU THINK CAN SAY THAT THEYVE DRAFTED 3 PRO BOWLERS AND 1 ALTERNATE IN THE LAST 3 DRAFTS? Please look it up and then get back to me, because you will realize you are wrong.

Enough with the negative Jet fans, if youre going to cry go to a mets blog

  20. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

I don’t want this guy even if they put super glue on his hands!!

  21. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

shutup Joe and I like how Lisa said dont freak out…YET. lol

  22. avatar david i says:

    Tell him Jesus!

Tanny was one game away from being NFL executive of the year. Since he wasn’t, that’s why Mangini is in Cleveland and no longer boring us to tears with,”we’re just working the process”. I would rather have Tanny doing what he is doing, which is everything possible to fill the holes every year, than one who sits around on his ass and pontificates about the draft. I’m all for Tanny doing what he’s doing.

  23. avatar JesusRevis says:

Exactly, how can people complain about a GM who does everything he possibly can to make the team better.

  24. avatar JerryB says:

As soon as the Saints traded the #2 to the Gmen, you knew they weren’t going to extend Vilma before the new season. I blame Tannhy for not including that in the trade agreement. He just paid for the lesson.

  25. avatar Big A says:

Is Robert Royal an upgrade over Franks or Baker? I’m not so sure that either of these guys couldn’t have done a better job. What kind of money is Royal looking for?

  26. avatar Olaf says:

OH GOD PLEASE NO ANY! BUT HIM I WOULD TAKE ANTHONY BEHCT ANY DAY OVER HIM

  27. avatar david i says:

All that matters is that Royal is a good to very good blocking TE. When you think about the fact that the team is going to be an aggressive D and a strong running game, this would make sense, as long as the financials are reasonable.

  28. avatar Michael M says:

Maybe this is the window James Dearth has been waiting for! Lol

  29. avatar ramble914 says:

Welcome back Nikolas! How Ya been Pal?

No need for hank to take over the “we hate tanny club”, Nikolas is back.

Still crying over Chad are ya? Time heals all wounds.

  30. avatar JesusRevis says:

    The Vilma Trade:

The Saints were taking a huge risk in losing Vilma by waiting til Free Agency started to re-sign him. Tannenbaum figured the Saints would re-sign Vilma before free agency and not take the risk of losing him. The Saints got lucky that they were able to keep Vilma, and this was not a bad move or a mistake by Tannenbaum.

  31. avatar JesusRevis says:

Nikolas, Hank and lgs should form there own blog where they can complain all day long and have an endless supply of tampons to share.

  32. avatar JerryB says:

Since they had traded their #2 to the Giants, the Saints would have owed the Jets their #1. No way would they do that. I’m sure that they had a contract worked out with Vilma before they let him go.

  33. avatar david i says:

    Jesus

I’ll donate the first box of pany liners to their cause.
    LOL!!!

    All good fun!

  34. avatar JesusRevis says:

Haha, yeah its all in good fun.

I’d like to see 2 threads on this website in the near future – 1. dedicated to re-signing Leon Washington 2 – discussing any possibility of trading for Jay Cutler.

  35. avatar DSmizzle says:

Chris Baker is really solid bad move dropping him when not absolutely necessary. He will be very good in NE.

  36. avatar Angus says:

As a Bills fan, I can tell you Jets fans that you’d get:

    1) An excellent locker room guy
    2) An average rapper
    3) A player that the bills previusly over-paid for, even if he didn’t make much from us.

As division rivals, surely you all know how bad he was for us.

As a backup, it’s not so bad, as he’s a good blocker, despite what the original article says. Just don’t try to make him a pass-catcher!

  37. avatar Big A says:

Hey Angus, thanks for checking in. I think the Jets need something more than just a backup after losing Baker and not having a veteran QB.

  38. avatar JesusRevis says:

were not looking for an excellend locker room guy or a good blocker, but the idea of an average rapper sounds intriguing.

  39. avatar Le'Sean Roberts says:

he should be faster than baker…that’s a start

  40. avatar DSmizzle says:

Baker had good speed … he had good everything really … good athlete in all respects and knew how to play the game of football.

  41. avatar The Real Kyle says:

You forget that Baker is a bum. He has all the talent of the world, never lived up to it. He won’t even make the team come camp.

  42. avatar DSmizzle says:

Baker aint no bumb he’s been a quality NFL’er his entire career you don’t know the game little boy (Kyle).

  43. avatar James in TN says:

Baker had to go because his game didn’t live up to his mouth.

Jesus, I just wish we had got Cutler in the draft, good point.

Also, This FO just went out and got us a LB with a high motor and a great CB. I approve of the moves. I hope Ratliff is the starter when it’s all said and done.

    GO JETS

  44. avatar Kyle "The Young Jet" says:

Hmmmmm Average Rapper……This interests me get him tanny.

  45. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

why do we need an average rapper? why do we have to get average anything? lets get a good TE that can BLOCK and pass an occasional catch. this guy sux.

  46. Yeah, welcome home, Nikolas. I figgered you moved tothe Miami site. I missed not reading about the Jets lack of chemistry because of Tannebaum’s bone-headed moves. Weren’t you the guy wearing the lampshade on his head and doing cartwheels during that last game of the season? You really showed us and the Jets FO, didn’t you?
    LOL

  47. @ NE, Chris Baker = the next Mike Vrable near the endzone.

  48. Robert Royal is a winner! U all are losers! He rolls and if u have a problem with it go 0-17!

  49. avatar TRexxFan says:

Any word on what the Baker terms actually were with NE ? Did they pay him what the Jets were scheduled to ?
