Coles Passed on by Phins?

by Bassett on March 1st, 2009 at 8:54 pm

colesWill the Dolphins pass on Laveranues Coles?  It looks like they might.

Money is almost undoubtedly an issue. Coles gave up the final year of his contract with the Jets, amounting to $6 million, to become a free agent, and there’s no doubt he’d like to recoup a large percentage of that amount with his next team.

Buffalo seems to be a better fit for Coles, where he would complement a true No. 1 guy in Lee Evans. Coles visited Buffalo Friday but there has been no more talk of visits since then. Calls to his agent, Roosevelt Barnes, on Sunday went to voice mail and were not returned.

Chad looked fine in 2008 without his binkie.  Why add him back to the roster now?

Although far from over, it might be interesting to see how this plays out.  I respect Coles a lot, but his desire to get larger money on the open market might not pan out the way he anticipated.  Sadly, he’s just  another veteran possession-receiver in this league now.  Although it’s a thin WR free agent class, there might not be a lot of teams who are willing to break the bank for his services.

Thanks to Michael M. for sending on the link.

complete smokescreen and move to try to get him to lower his price!!!

  2. avatar ronnie says:

marvin harrison and coles are bringing each others value down.

  3. avatar jetobsessed2 says:

great use of the word “binkie”… lol

  4. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

if he’s looking for more than 6 mil guranteed it might be a long wait

  5. avatar steviek says:

it’s going to go down just like baseball — there are going to be some veteran free agents playing for a lot less money than they expected or not playing.

  6. avatar BigKatFan says:

Coles has at most 1 season left in him. He should just retire.

  7. avatar Jason says:

I think Coles group really overestimated his value. The trend in the NFL has gone away from WRs like Coles. Teams look for big wideouts who can work the sidelines and can go up and get a football. LC needs to go to a team that already has that and be a complementary piece.

  8. avatar Rich R. says:

He can always come home again…although it’ll be at a hefty discount.

  9. avatar Fred says:

His disloyalty is reallyy starting to get annyoing

  10. avatar JesusRevis says:

BigKatFan, 1 season left? he should retire? thats an ignorant statement. He had a pretty good year last year for us and hes the type of player whose skills will never get old, he could play til hes in his late 30′s, easy. I dont want him back, but he would be a good pick up for another team.

  11. avatar patpat says:

BigKatFan could be right…the skill and agility is still there (which makes him great to watch), but hes a wayne chrebet story at this point i think. all it takes is a couple good hits and hell reconsider his future. you cant keep playin if youre gunna keep getting knocked stupid all the time

  12. avatar Nick says:

Pretty sure it was said that he was more interested in a long-term deal than a pay raise.

  13. avatar jp losman says:

i wonder how much of these questions marks surrounding coles will disappear once housh signs a deal. the three team that miss on TJ will have to be looking coles way by monday. while housh is an elite talent, coles is not really that far behind. the age is similar and the way they are used is similar.

i see coles as more of a “poor mans housh” anyways.

  14. avatar swizzle81 says:

Haha, do not want him back, not even if he comes back crawling.

  15. avatar TheRealRK says:

John Clayton said on SC a few hours ago that the Dolphins made Coles an offer but the the price was lower than he wanted and if they go higher he’d like to sign with them. That’s the only report I’ve seen or heard that has the Dolphins interested. He also said if Housh signs with another team, the Bengals could be interested in Coles

I like Coles always have but his costant complaining about everything from the hard practices to his contract got so exhausting to listen too and the fact is his production is not at a high level anymore. He’s a good possession type receiver, but not a guy you can’t replace especially if you are in need of a #1 guy like the Jets are in need of. I wish the guy the best but I’m not all that upset that he’s gone

  16. avatar Harvlis says:

I don’t want Coles back, at this point, but I would want him out of our division. Cincinnati sounds good to me. I have always liked him, as a receiver. No Jet fan should hold any animosity. He played his b-tt off for us.

Here is one more video on him you will be surprised.

He is number 90 on his highlight videos.

  19. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

It’s truly sad to see how Coles pay-day strategy crash back to reality. Back in the day his stock would have risen in FA, but that time has long passed. He is not the quality player he once was.

Truth be told between his contract complaining, lack of interest for any QB other then Chad, any team would truly be stupid for letting him on the field. Not to mention the numerous concussions he has experienced over the years.

IMO because of those concussions Coles has become a liability, and only a team without humanity would let him play. I for one would not enjoy seeing him get another concussion.

Who knows how many more he can take? It could be the next one which could cause him to permanently wear a helmet asking people “Have you seen my baseball”?

  20. avatar No Farve no problem says:

We should go after Jarron Gilbert!!! He will be the successor to Ellis!!

My original post didn’t go through here is another one.

These two are a little bit long but you can see some versatility.

Here is a funny video of him!!

  23. avatar No Farve no problem says:

Jarron Gilbert would be a nice addition to our defensive front if we lose Mosely to free agency and Ryan could use him inside and jenkins standing upright with Ellis or Coleman on the other side.

  24. avatar JesusRevis says:

Gilbert is way too small to play NT, but could play end

  25. avatar wayne80 says:

I have nothing against LC and would like to see him back (albeit with a hugggggge discount for these shenanigans) ….draft someone else at 17 and well be fine

  26. avatar jim says:

what are the chances of getting back coles for a discount?

  27. avatar No Farve no problem says:

    Jesus,

The formation I just mentioned was A SCHEME executed by the Ravens last year and with jenkins playing behind the line, standing up like Ngata as a linebacker and the two ends playing inside on the line. THE JETS CAN DO THE SAME WITH SIMILAR PERSONEL.

  28. avatar ronnie says:

with the defense that jets are planning on having, it is imperative we get a very good punter because we’ll be having a lot of field position battles.

Here are the availible punters from the beginning of the offseason

Lechler – was resigned by the raiders, one of the best putners in the game
Chris Hanson – patriats, not a good unter
Sam Koch RFA No way he becomes availible
Michael Koenen – Great punter but franchised by the falcons
Hunter Smith – dont like him that much….hes coming from playing in a dome.

Looks like we’ll have to wait for training camp and hope one of the other punters get cut.

  29. avatar David says:

hes gonna try to come crawling back and i hope tannanbaum is smart enough to say hells no

  30. avatar JesusRevis says:

No favre no problem, Your first post which I was responding to was a lot less specific, and I thought you were saying Gilbert would be playing nose alongside Ellis and Coleman on either side. Your last post was much more specific and now I understand you were referring to a specific scheme.

  31. avatar JesusRevis says:

Also, there are some rumors floating around about the Jets trying to trade or Braylon Edwards. Dont know how serious these reports are or if there is any truth to it, but it was mentioned in newsday and has been mentioned on websites around the internet. I have seen reports involving David Harris in the trade, and other reports involving out 1st round pick. Its probably simply rumors but it would be an interesting idea.

  32. avatar Triple B says:

JETS-Fan -4-Life & it shows. Accurate, unemotional, a true game student! Coles held the JETS for ransom coming back from Washington & was catered to. More of the same expected, tho Coles isn’t so precocious anymore, playing from memory now. Like a once great boxer who sees the openings yet can’t make the knockouts as the counter-right is baring down. He’ll land on his feet better than the recession crowd. Sadder than a wilted, unwanted alter bouquet – yet w/ a necessary dose of humility. Maybe he can bury the old-women-over-the-phone-nagging. Remember LC, you’re still a young man, ba-a-a-aby – don’t waste you’re time…

  33. hes gonna come crawling back and thier gonna SIGN him

  34. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

Thanks Triple B, and your analogy of the once great boxer is very accurate.
