Jim Leonhard Leaves NY Without Deal

NFP’s Matt Bowen is reporting that Jim Leonhard left Florham Park without signing a contract.

What’s not to say is that he doesn’t have an offer, but probably that he hasn’t signed it. Leonhard has more than one option vying for his services (Eagles are interested too) and I’m sure his agent is urging him to take a look at every team. I do hope that he chooses the Jets, but it looks like he’s not going to do it without a thorough investigation first.

Tip o’ the cap  to Jason from NYJetsCap.com for the update.

  1. wtf!

  2. I’m sorry to say, I personally don’t believe he will return.

  3. bart scott all over again i say we move lowrey to safety were he’s a better fit anyway.

  4. I’m really not concerned about Leonhard not signing rite away!!! If he has other offers, it only makes sense too listen!!! In the end though, “He Will Be A Jet”!!!

  5. i hope he’s able to sign..I dont know how much of an asset he’ll be ( i dont know much about him) but if he allowed reed to have that much room to roam, i’d love rhodes to have that sort of freedom

but lowery is a nice back up plan

  6. y not take a look at jermaine phillips isnt he much better in coverage anyway or does he cost to much i mean i know leohnard is 1 of rex guys but isnt phillips better

  7. This dude is a want, not a need. I think he’ll go to the Jets anyway.

  8. no worries, maybe they’ll just end up drafting Sean Smith in the 2nd round

  9. Elam is fine if Leonhard wants to play hardball we have many back-up options and he is not a game changer.

  10. bad bad bad news, the guy played under Rex and he wants to visit other teams? just like Ivy left without signing, the both of them won’t be playing for the Jets, bad bad bad news

  11. how much would phillips cost us u think?

  12. This is absolute agent work at its best…The agent knows other teams are interested but Leonhard and his agent know there is only 2 places he could excel at….Here or back at Baltimore.

Calculated risk by Leonhard and his agent. He will either crawl back or sign with another team and suck!!

  13. we got the Raven we need in Bart Scott…. Jim Leonhard would be nice to have another Rex guy, but I’m ok w/Elam and Smith opposite Kerry…plus Lowery is always an option there.

  14. Awesome. Probably has to do with us not being able to guarantee him a starting spot, so look for us to bring one in from the draft…

  15. I don’t know if I’m okay with just elam..and definitely not smith. Rhodes complained about who he was lining up with all year long.

  16. Hopefully the Jets do not sign Ivy, they have seen enough retreads throughout the years at CB.

As for Leonhard, this is his agent trying to up his asking price, although he is a good player and many of us would like to see him in a Jet uniform, he has only started 1 year and I could see a team like Philly over paying for his services. Lets not break the bank on this guy.

  17. Just becuase he left without a contract doesnt mean he wont sign with us.

  18. Nobody ever heard of Jim Leonhard until Rex got here. Dont over pay for a 1 yr wonder. He is great against the run but we need to shore up the pass D. Move Lowery. Much better athlete and the ball finds him.

  19. I’m sure that he believes he owes it to Ryan to give the Jets a shot to match any offer.

  20. Two Things Ivy is coming back for another visit and I didnt expect Leonhard to sign yesterday anyway he has alot of other options and in my opinion it would of been dumb if he didnt look at all the options..
But He wanted to sign so I expect him to be a Jet, unless someone throws Albert Haynesworth money at him.

  21. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast/0-6-1/Dolphins-not-interested-in-Coles.html

LC won’t be continuing his bro-mance with Chad.

  22. Unless the Jets were going to overpay, (and we don’t wan’t them to) it makes sense they will want to see what’s out there. The only way they sign right away is if we want them so bad we don’t let them leave.

  23. Well here we go again.

  24. i think either way wed b ok. without leonhard or with itll be fine

    LBs are perfect

now nobodys been talkin about the hole at DE. wow am i the only one who thinks we should of signed chris canty. hes perfect

    DL- B+
    LBs- A
    Secondary- A-

    As of right now

  25. As I expected npobody is going to pay Coles what he would have made as a Jet this year….Huge risk for a 31 often injured WR to take…Typical Coles, over estimating his value. I hope he comes crawling back and Mr T tells him to take a hike.

  26. MUST DO: we should shore up a good sized massive DT through the draft in a late round maybe 6th or 7th and get a mediocre DE in FA along with what i think will help.
SHOULD DO: do those two things and look to get a good DE in the draft in an early round

    first 3 rounds should be a WR,TE,DE

  27. I think lil jimmy is just getting a big head. If you think about it we. REALLY dont need him. He isnt all that. He had like 2 ok games and 1 great one.

  28. Tyler Lil Jimmy wanted to sign his agent just ADVISED him to look elsewhere for more money, I think He will be in a Jets Jersey soon though. Dont worry its like a more extended ersion of the Bart Scott situation.

  29. i still say we need a superstar o.lineman to take our line to elite status

  30. Trevor- if you think no one notices the hole at DE- then you haven’t seen one of the dozens of threads I’ve posted this one. I even submitted an “Official Get Chris Canty” column.

But doesn’t matter now, he’ll be playing in the stadium but for blue and white.

    Canty signed with G-Men, 6 yrs $42mm.

What now for D-Line?? I understand that the backers are good and will be solid against the run and our secondary may be able to cover anyone but how effective will we be on 1st downs with this line?!

I hate to put a sour spin on this offseason, because I have been surprised but this is honestly a huge mistake. The Front Office needs to seek a resolution and I sure hope Tyson Jackson isn’t the answer- especially considering I’d like to see Nicks, or Heywerd Bey come to us Rd 1.

  31. Also- the DT to get is Moala from USC. Just a beast and should be there at Rd 3. Would be an absolute steal. Cannot wait to Rd’s 6, otr7 considering we don’t have a viable option behind Jenkins. We need a good rotation to keep him fresh on 1st and 2nd downs.

Canty would have been perfect. Could have then possibly went Nicks, Duke Robinson and Moala in the 1st 3 rds, shoring up depth at Wr, Ol and DT which would’ve have been huge.

This Canty thing really was an abortion, I’m sorry.

  32. AKA Drew-

I think Coles may have gotten some bad advice from his agent. After he was released Coles said” “I look at it as a long-term thing,”… “It’s something my agent and I talked about for a long time. I trust my agent. He’s been in my corner for a long time. He gave me his opinion. He said he truly believed we could get a long-term deal on the open market and I took his word for it. I want to go somewhere where I can finish my career. I don’t want to bounce from team to team. I hope to play another three or four years.” His agent also told him that Santa Claus was real and the Tooth Fairy would pick up he money he gave up. I hope for his sake he lands with some team, but he may have kissed 6 Million goodbye

  33. Trevor, what are you smoking? There is no such thing as a good massive DT available in the 6th or 7th round. They are all gone on day one.

  34. Unless LC has changed agents, he’s done pretty well for him up to now.

  35. would you guys trade a late round draft pick to the cowboys for safety roy williams or wait and see if he get released.

  36. Williams couldn’t cover his his head with a hat!

  37. if you all had multiple job offers, wouldn’t you look into all of them, or at least a good number of them. Or would you just go to the 1st company and sign on. Jim isn’t going to make a lot of money (in NFL terms), and I assume his contract isn’t going to be a 5yr deal. The man has a really big decision to make, give him some time. Rex likes him (a lot), Jim likes Rex. Right now the Jets have the upper hand, unless someone throws a ton of money at him or a long term deal (neither should happen) you gotta figure he’ll sign with NY. Relax.

  38. People have been overating Leonhard from day 1. He’s a nice player, but hes nothing special. In the end I believe he will wind up with the Jets but dont knock him for hearing other teams offers.

Leonhard will sign with the Jets, be patient.

  39. If Coles doesnt sign with anyone does that mean we will be forced to take him back for the $6mil??

  40. let leonhard go
    move lowrey to saftey
    or maybe draft patrick chung

  41. No way on Roy Williams. He is not the kind of player we need. While he maintains his status as a big hitter, he has struggled in coverage. At this point we already have the poor man’s version of him in Abram Elam. I am not worried about Leonhard leaving without a deal in place. Tannenbaum always gets his man. Ryan definitely seems to have a certain appeal to him that his players like, this is a good sign. He will be ours. Oh yes, he will be ours.

Think how nice our secondary will look on paper. Revis and Sheppard at the corners. Rhodes and Leonhard at Safety. Possibly Corey Ivy playing as the nickel corner, Elam backing up the Safeties on running downs, with Dwight Lowery getting a look at both DB positions in certain packages. I would feel pretty good about this if it is what we end up with.

  42. Whats the word on Ivy? People are saying hes signed but I havent seen it anywhere

  43. i like jermaine phillips the best i know hes expensive but hes the best out of all the options n i also like sean jones from clevlend

  44. im actually happy…..i think lowery would be better back there anyway, i wasnt to sure about both leonhard and ivy coming here…..figured it would stunt lowery’s growth as a player….we dont need em both..just one i guess…..and i would rather ivy, so that swipe can take his rightful postion along side rhodes

  45. you guys all say that our LB’s are solid i only see 2 proven solid LB’s harris and scott who are the other 2

  46. nvm totally forgot about pace and thomas

  47. i wouldn’t mind having abe eelam blitzing because he’s good at that and making big plays but we’re missing something special in this guy, he’s got potential and fits will in ryan’s defense, the more ravens the quicker accustomed we get to ryan’s D… but eagles are very shrewd, they let dawkins get away something tells me they overpay this guy or let him breeze by, i think he’ll stick with rex and sign with us….

  48. Chris,

Your draft hopes are right on! I’m a big nicks fan myself but DHB is another option to look at ! I. Think Nicks has Boldin like skills, he is gonna make some team reaaaallll happy! Great hands and big heart! That guy doesn’t take a play off !

  49. Canty got way too much money from the Giants. The Jets couldnt have afforded to give him that type of money and were better off without him for that price.

I like Moala from USC too, but I dont know if he will be around in the 3rd round, if he is then that would be a big steal.

  50. ok this guy got 526,000 for last year, what is he looking for in a contact. if the jets can get him for around that, than i think it is fine, if we are going to give him over a million, i think that is carzy.

i mean i dont know anything about this player besides the real basics, but i have to think he is not a pro bowl, and so is not worth that much

  51. Thats fine,go get Sean Jones instead. Will be more expensive but he can sure HIT!

  52. CAN YALL SAY James Butler

  53. there are way better options then Jim Leonhard i think we should go after someone like jermaine phillips or Sean Jones or James Butler all better options then Jim Leonhard i know they dont know the D that rex is brigin but all are better then
    Jim Leonhard……RIGHT OR WRONG

  54. I guess after the bart Scott episode every FA thinks thy can come in and play hardball to get what they want. Glad to see Tanny sticking to his guns.

  55. Everyone needs to relax. The only kinds of signings that get wrapped up in a day are the big-name big-money signings. When you’re a guy like Jim Leonhard, you don’t jump all over the first deal you are offered, because it’s not a 5 year $30 million+ offer. It’s probably more like 3 years and $8 or 9 million. Give the guy some respect and let him do what is best for him and his family.

And for the people saying to stick with what we have..umm, no? Eric Smith is one hit away from snapping his own neck, and I could beat Elam in a foot race. Someone mentioned don’t sign guys to stunt Lowery’s growth, well wouldn’t switching positions for a 2nd year player be doing the same thing?

I’m all for signing Ivy short-term to play over the slot guys, and Leonhard would be a great addition because he’ll be playing full speed from the get-go and not hesitate. The Jets didn’t just go into this offseason with one plan of action, every plan has contingencies, and those contingencies have contingencies, so stopppppp worrying.

  56. Don’t see why so many people want this guy so bad. We have Lowery and pretty much a full draft to play with. Why are we crushing on a 5′8 safety who played one good year?

  57. JAGG, Amen brother!!!! Lowery and Elam as a backup. Let lowery be a cb in the nickle and let either Lito or Revis play in the slot. Are we man crushing on a 5′8″ safety? No one had time to throw the deep ball against Baltimore. Draft a safety since you don’t need a starter.

  58. Guys its not just his skill level, but he can help the other players learn the system quicker. Lowery can’t cover anyone so he wouldn’t work at safety, but why not him compete with Elam, Competition always helps and he has talent.

  59. JIm Leonhard has verbally agreed on a contract with the Jets. It was just stated on the Evan Roberts and Joe Beningo show on WFAN

  60. You all need to settle down. You just got one of the best saftey’s out there. Leonhard was ranked 6th in the NFL last year for punt returns yards also. Also ranked 4th in tackles with one of the best defenses in the league! Do not underate him! He is not just a 1 year stand out. He just needed last year to prove what he can bring.
