Link: Boomer on Jets Moves

Jane McManus was covering the Rangers last night, and spotted Boomer Esiason and asked him some questions about Tannenbaum’s moves so far this offseason. Boomer told her that “Mike Tannenbaum is a star this time of year.”

Hmm … let’s just hope some of his stardom wears off on the team come January & February next year. Check out what else Boomer had to say on Jane’s blog.

Heading out, be back in a few hours …

  1. If there is one person I trust when it comes to Football it is Boomer. He was against the Favre trade and is usually right on with analysis. I have been happy with our off season. Hearing Boomer agree is reassuring.

Please stop trashing Mr. T. He has learned on the job and has made good acquisitions. His drafts have netted us some quality players. IF, and there is a major IF, Ratliff works out he will have found a undrafted FA to play QB. So let’s go easy on the inability to groom young talent.

I have never understood why Snyder never threw his money at the good talent scouts. That seems like a good way to invest your money in the team.

We have had some great pics in the draft so it seems Bradway is a pretty good scouting.

  2. I read that the word out is the jets are not taking a QB. If so ,i hope that Rex took a look and is happy. If he doesnt like what he see and they dreft a QB no crying big babbies!!! im for who ever they take. Heyward-Bey would be a great pick.

  3. scout

  4. wtf is the news with Ivey and Littly Jimmy?????

  5. Yea this is about the time we praise Mike for his great moves, and about January we are gonna regret these moves, I’m not saying we will just remembering what happened last year, and Jets didn’t meet our expectations, right now we have a team built for a wild card birth, the reason why I don’t think a division winner because Brady’s back and the QB is a question mark, but if we don’t make the playoffs next year don’t be surprised

  6. Sanchez is dropping… Every scouting report I look says the same thing. If the only knock on a guy is that he’s inexperienced and had a lot of good athletes around him, well, I don’t think of that as a knock at all:

Mark Sanchez Scouting Report by Raj

Pros: Has the size and athleticism you look for in a quarterback. Tremendous mechanics and footwork. Steve Sarkisian (USC’s former offensive coordinator) said of Sanchez that he is the hardest working quarterback he’s ever coached. Is a true student of the game, and shows that attention to detail and leadership quality that you look for in a franchise signal caller.

Cons: Has not had enough experience at USC as a starter. Durability could be an issue with him. Has a great offensive line and is surrounded by many playmakers, so some may wonder how he will fare upon adversity. Does have a tendency to hold the ball to long at times in the pocket. Will definitely benefit from another year at USC to show NFL scouts his potential.

Overall: A great NFL-prospect that seems to have the ability to make all the necessary throws at the next level. Some NFL scouts have even compared his quick release and delivery to Troy Aikman. Although, it obviously remains to be seen if Sanchez lives up to that kind of billing, he projects to be a early to mid-first round draft pick if he chooses to declare.

  7. Anybody read Glauber’s piece this morning? I have to say I agree with him whole heartedly. There is a certain feel this team already that Ryan brings. It feels like its change for the better. For something good. For something special.

I think the debt Joe Willie owed the devil has been repayed by Favre.

After 40 years in the desert, I think we are close to the promised land.

  8. I’ve been watching the Ravens-Steelers OT replay in slo-mo keying on Scott. His pass defense is A+. He fills the gaps quickly on running plays but when an OL gets his hands on him he can’t get off the block.

  9. tread lightly with that promised land stuff. We’ve had a great offseason so far, but we’ve had great offseasons before and we’ve had enigmatic, fat, attitude-ladden coaches before. So none of tis is really new for me. But It’s great. But don’t buy your superbowl tickets just yet. None of it matters if we don’t do something at WR.

  10. Why dont we make a push for ANQUAN BOLDIN? Judging from the Card’s playoff run, it seems this guy’s itching to be a team’s sole #1 WR (as opposed to 2nd fiddle to Fitzgerald). We’ve got the money/draft-picks to make an attractive offer.

  11. Draft Hakeem Nicks

  12. Problem with Bolden is that he’s not a number 1 receiver. When he was younger he could pull it off but as he gets older all that muscle and rough play will bring him down to earth as a possession-wise. Which is okay, but not worth the huge contract he’ll want.

  13. since we have a thousand possession WRs

  14. Can anyone reset the score here, with Lito, Bart and Moore in the fold, where do we stand on the cap? By my math we still have 14m left: 8 for Bart, 3 for Lito, 4 for Brandon (off of 29m to start), is that right?

If so, I imagine we are looking to spend about 4 of that on Ivey and Leonhard. Lets just say that happens. I wold imagine the next move would be to lock in Leon to a long term deal and take care of the rookies, that should just about cover it. Anyone see more room to make any other significant additions?

  15. Yea, we have just enough money for a sign and trade blockbuster deal with Andre Johnson.

  16. All quiet on the Jets fron this morning… I thought the Ivey and Leonhard deal would be done already.

Huge snowstorm for us East coast guys supposed to be rolling in!!!!!

  17. I am probably one of the few that would welcome LC back. I hope he goes to Buffalo instead of Miami. Buffalo has no hope of beating the Jets next season. I think there are only 1 or 2 WRs in the draft that could be a No, 1 in their rookie year.

  18. LC just doesn’t remedy the problem though. If he doesn’t land somewhere it would be nice if he could come back for less money. I think he’s better than every WR we have now, but has a lower ceiling than any of them.

Rarely is there a starting WR in the draft. Crabtree aint even that, but you can get some surprises. I hope we take a round 1 (Heyward-Bay) or round 2 (Britt, Murphy, maybe Robiskie) or atleast make a big aquisition in FA.

  19. nevermind FA, a trade…

  20. Anybody know what draft pick the Jets get now that the Saints resigned Vilma?

  21. Butch we’ll eceive their 3rd rounder.

Whats the status on IVY and specifically JIM LEONHARD

  22. Theres this wide recever ……….6′4″……..207 pounds……..and he’s already on the roster……..Marcus Henry might be the guy to step in next to cotch at wide receiver……..just think of the chemistry he must have with ratliff being on the scout team this year………maybe something like a coles pennington connection when pennington got the nod over testaverde…..He was hurt most of the preseason but when he played he was impressive….coles leaving is only going to help us this year…..clowney and henry i think will get it done for us….The jets will draft DE and OL in the first 2 rounds……..

  23. Sorry……typo….not OL……RB……dont know what i was typing…

  24. Don’t forget boyz…we must sign a field goal kicker and punter too….

  25. Leonhard arrived last night. His official visit is scheduled for today (Sunday).

  26. No rookie WR’s every step in and become #1 WR’s. Unless your Randy Moss, but the superfreak only comes alone once every 1000 years. The Jets can win with their receivers now, they just need to draft a wide reciever in the first round who they could groom to be their number 1 guy. I would be happy with Crabtree, Maclin, Nicks, or Heyward-Bay. Robiskie is a real good player, but not #1 WR stuff.

David i, I read Glauber in newday today, surprisingly optimistic article from a guy who mostly disagrees with the Jets moves, but you cant help but feel Rex Ryan is bringing a new dimension and attitude to this team. I have a feeling we are going to have the meanest defense in the NFL, maybe not the #1 or #2 ranked defense, but an elite one that will be knocking guys around and creating fear in opposing teams.

  27. bozzie, a punter a pk will acount for a combined 1 – 1.5 mil against the cap

  28. is leonhard a jet yet what’s going on?

  29. The Jets have Punter Reggie Hodges under contract for next season, so we do not need a punter.

  30. I disagree Jay, yes we have Hodges but we need an upgrade at that position If we can get someone like sam Koch to consistently pin teams inside their own red zone, it will be a huge asset to our attack style D. But, thanks to crazy al davis, it might not be so cheap to get a koch or hunter smith.

  31. We get the Saints 3rd, but we have give up one of our 2 4th round picks.

  32. I would be in favor of drafting a punter. We definitely need an upgrade over Hodges.

  33. how did the saints get out of owing a first round pick? I understand they let him become a FA. But how is it different. He signed a 5 year contract

  34. they had to re-sign him during the season for it to become a first rd pick

  35. Interesting update by Cimini on the Sheppard contract:
UPDATE II: Interesting details are trickling in on the Sheppard contract. It’s a complex, but clever deal by GM Mike Tannenbaum that protects the Jets if Sheppard is a bust.

    Some tidbits:

    • Technically, there’s no guaranteed money in the contract. Sheppard will make $3 million this season, the same he would’ve made with the Eagles.

    • In March, 2010, there’s a $10 million option bonus. If the Jets decide to pay it, a new four-year, $27.2 million kicks in.

    • If Sheppard is injured and misses considerable time, the Jets can get out of the deal after one year and they wouldn’t owe the Eagles a draft pick in 2010. If that’s the case, all it would’ve cost them is a fifth-round pick in the ‘09 draft. One person familiar with the deal said it could amount to a “one-year test drive” for the Jets.

    • The conditional pick in ‘10 can rise to a second-rounder, but only if he hits an 85% playing-time plateau AND receives the four-year extension. And if that does happen, the Jets would get a fifth-rounder back from the Eagles.

    • If Sheppard makes 85%, but doesn’t receive the extension, the Jets would owe a third-rounder to the Eagles and would recoup a fifth rounder.

    • Obviously, there are a number of different scenarios, and I won’t bore you with them, but this is the essence of the trade. Bottom line: If Sheppard stinks, it’ll be a one-year deal for $3 million and would cost them a fifth-round pick. If he becomes a full-time starter, the Jets probably will have to give up a second- or third-rounder in addition to this year’s fifth and they’ll have to pay him roughly what this year’s top cornerback free agents (the Colts’ Kelvin Hayden and the Ravens’ Domonique Foxworth) received on their just-signed deals.

  36. The Jets cannot win with this receiving core. They can do some things but eventually the door to the playoff’s gonna shut on them just like this past season. You can’t have a situation where defenses can just key in on the box. Bad idea. That’s basically what did Favre in. Look at the diff between the Ravens with and without a downfield threat.

  37. I disagree. As long as you can complete the intermediate zone passes at a high percentage, you can keep the safety out of the box and get the LBs moving backward.

  38. dade county..

i see you bringing up henry and his size……but he has not proven his worth obviously. just because your big doesnt mean your a down field threat….and he’s not really that fast…off the line at least

  39. Jerry, we’ve been saying the same thing since we traded keyshawn.

I wouldn’t bet on Henry either. Just being big aint gonna cut it. That chemistry he may or may not have with Ratliff will change when he’s getting pushed around by NFL CBs in real time.

  40. draft percy harvin

  41. Jerry, thanks for posting the contract details. That’s a great contract for a guy where you’re concerned about his motivation.

  42. We were able to move the ball at will between the 20s last year. Our offensive problem was scoring touchdowns in the redzone. We just need a big receiver that can jump as a #3.

  43. Percy Harvin = Santana Moss that can run the ball. We’ve done that already also. Not ideal but I wouldn’t cut ,y wrist over it.

  44. we have to take a QB in the first round, especially if sanchez is available.. thats a no brainer, and even if he’s not the brass would be thinking long and hard about taking josh freeman, which i expect them too.. he has all the tools and impressed everyone at the combine…. we have to get kenny britt in the second round, maybe even trade up.. and to make this good offseason a great one we have to sign chris canty or ron bartell (and leonhard)

  45. Jerry, i’d modify that statement by saying, “We were able to move the ball at will between the 20 last year until defense figured out, since we had noone that they could take seriously down the feild, they could key in on the box and there was nothing we could but keep trying to do the same thing. Hence the offensive impotency after Tennessee…

  46. zjim, I agree. As much as I want the round 1 receiver, especially DHB, I’d take a QB if he falls. That would be the prudent thing to do.

  47. Jerry B:

That’s a great break down…thanks. Shows Tanny has some out clauses.

For all the Tanny bashers out there, you have to give the guy credit where credit is due. Over the past few years, he has revolutionized deal making in the NFL, as he has made moves and negotiated creative trade and contract clauses, so everyone is proteected and wins. That is why the Vilma deal with Saints will not be made an issue out of, as that is exactly the reason why Tanny left the clause in th for making moves in very creative ways. Also perfect for DRob with Denver last year. We needed his ass off the cap and the deal with Denver allowed us to get rid of him w/o being scortched by carrying the cap hit. In the end, we did not get anything out of it but cap relieve, but neither did Denver. They got a trial run on the guy w/o risk. Now we are doing the same with Sheppard.

  48. there r 2 nfl players missing from a day on the water in florida 1 is from the lions the other is from oakland the coast guard is still looking for them i dont know much more my prayers go out to them and there families

  49. Leonhard has an offer from the Eagles, and has received interest from the Broncos in addition to the Jets.

  50. The Gmen just signed Canty, 7 yrs $42MM

  51. that’s 6 years $42MM

  52. I would think that Leonhard would give the Jets the chance to match any other offers.

  53. why werent we interested in Brian Dawkins before he got scooped up by Denver? He is a motivator and an absolute monster. Not to mention he didnt cost an insane amount of money. Yes hes old. But anyone who knows this guy knows that means nothing. Obviously this is an after thought. but anyone agree? with him I dont know if even tom brady would be bent over and taught a lesson when they play the new smash mouth jets. thank you sexy rexy!

  54. and they say the giants dont over pay for F.A.

  55. Jet favre Dawkins age IS affecting his play. He signed a 5 year deal, meaning we wouldve had to give a 35- year old safety who is getting physically beat up by his own physical play and mentality a long-term deal. I’d rahter have one of Rex’s own who is much younger, knows the system as well as anybody, and at this point good be just as valuable as Dawkins.

  56. just on fox news corey smith n marquis cooper r the missing nfl players no sign of anything not even the boat . its also a 21 ‘boat owned by cooper not that big u think he would own something a little bigger

  57. Fred. A man can dream. haha. Just the thought got me excited maybe i am thinking of dawkins in his prime. but like i said. just an after thought.

  58. Jay….whatever we do….

WE SHOULD NOT DRAFT PERCY HARVIN!!!

i beg any of you to tell me one florida WR who has ever been better then average in the NFL.

harvin is too small…and will get hurt…alot…with regular use on the field.

period…. let someone make the “sexy pick”…and yeah u might get a few hilite runs / reverses….but nothing reliable on a game to game basis. LOCK

  59. still no news on Ivy and Leonhard, I am worried about that, both of them should have been signed by now, it’s taking a long time especially since both of them visited the Jets already

  60. I agree, stay the hell away from Harvin, small and injury prone. Jets are in very good shape, but if they lose out on leonhard it would be bad news. Without him, the Jets will have to find a solution at ss, since we can’t go through another year of musical chairs in the secondary.

  61. FIRST off,let me START by saying that I am so HAPPY with Tannenbaum,Rex and co. I think they are doing an AMAZING job “cleaning house”(coles& a couple others) and getting GOOD/QUALITY players via free agency. IF Vernon Gholston can find himself, this could be a “SPECIAL” defensive unit. Its going to be “VERY” good one regardless. That being said,we filled a couple BIG holes on the defensive side of the ball,NOW its time to get Kellen/Ratliff some weapons on the OFFENSIVE side. I think we should take Darrius Heyward Bey with our 1st pick OR if Chicago grabs him before us then we should get Percy Harvin. I know he’s a liitle short and I have been screaming for a TALL,FAST wide reciever with HANDS,but he is a serious PLAYMAKER and should probably not be passed on. J-E-T-S JETS! JETS!! JETS!!!

  62. Gotta be Nicks

WR’s usually don’t do much as rookies, but Boldin did and Nicks has that type of game, real physical and best hands i’ve ever seen

People need to go look at his tape, he’s ready to play year one

Bey is the Gholston version on offense, a guy with average production who blows up at combine, STAY AWAY
