Link: Hope & Change Come to Florham?

by Bassett on March 1st, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Bob Glauber writes today in Newsday that he thinks there’s something of a different feeling this time with the Jets offseason and it’s the fact that the team is led by a confident coach.

Rest assured, the Jets are going to play for Ryan. And if they don’t, he’s going to get rid of them.

It’s the kind of mind-set that Parcells brought to the Jets from 1997-99. But unlike the iconic coach who led the Giants to two Super Bowl victories and the Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance, Ryan is at the beginning of his head- coaching career, not the end.

In other words, the Jets got Ryan at a time similar to when the Giants got Parcells – as a first-time head coach after earning respect as a defensive coordinator who was beloved by his players.

Anyone heard the latest on Leonhard’s visit?

  2. avatar subwayfare says:

I’ve been saying since his name was mentioned that Ryan is the new Parcells.

my thought gang is….what are we gonna do in the draft now?…..reciever? line depth on either or both sides of the ball? depth at running back? blocking tight end?

  4. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

all offense in the draft baby.

  5. avatar CRIMSON-SE7EN says:

The Jets need to address WR in the first. Hakeem Nicks is my choice at 17. He is a Anquan Boldin type of a player. Big,athletic, good hands. Plus he ran a nice 40 at the combine (4.49) that kind of went under the radar.

I KNOW I FEEL IT! We really are making some VERY good moves to better this franchise. In the draft,we need a TALL,FAST wide reciever with HANDS. I think we should draft Darrius Heyward Bey.

  7. avatar eross says:

im all for it, nothign better than another terp turned jet

  8. avatar Jared says:

    Please be Nicks

Bey is an overhyped workout warrior (see Gholston)

Nicks is a polished NFL ready guy, I believe Crabtree without the fanfare and inflated Texas Tech numbers

If we really are finally being smart, we’ll shun the combine numbers of a Bey and look at production on the football field, Nicks is a beast and best hands in the draft

  9. avatar Nick says:

I don’t like DHB, but at least if it’s not Britt, I won’t care.

But I really want Nicks, not only because he’s a great player, but because I have a great nickname for him…

  10. avatar ridinmywave says:

Overhyped workout warrior? where did you get that from?……becuase he’s fast? Heyward bey seems more logical, he can stretch the field, we have guys like nicks on the team already, sure handed guy but can’t stretch the field with his speed and is not a game breaker in my eyes….

The Jets set themselves up quite nicely for the draft. They should take the best available player at 17, anyone but a QB, someone who could contribute right away.

According to ESPN, Giants signed DE Chris Canty to a 6 year deal.

  12. avatar Jared says:

Nicks had more big plays ON THE FIELD then Bey, and its not even close

Just because a guy runs a 4.49 doesn’t mean he’s not a big play guy, you ever watch Boldin run over a DB and take it for a huge gain

I’ve seen Bey play for years, while a good player, I think there’s a lot of risk there

An NFL scout was on 660 last night talking about the Jets and heres what he said,

Rex Ryan wants to shore up his defense before the draft comes, so dont expect many or any signings of offensive players during the offseason. The Jets will use the draft to improve the depth on their offensive line and add a Wide Receiver in the early rounds. He also said dont be surprised if Sanchez falls to the Jets at 17 and they take him.

Take this for what its worth, I didnt have an exact quote from the scout but thats the basics of what he said. It all makes sense that Ryan would want to add all defense in the offseason, including several ex-Ravens. So expect the Jets to go all offense in the draft, and add a receiver.

  14. avatar swizzle81 says:

I am sure Igs is extremely happy right now about the Canty signing.

  15. avatar Fred says:

Giants also signed Rocky bernard. They now have 5 DT’s. Congratulations.

  16. avatar TC says:

I like the direction so far. NICKS all the way for #1 pick!

  17. avatar ronnie says:

Rex Ryan reminds me so much of John Fox from Carolina

  18. avatar bc says:

Knowshon Moreno if he’s still on the board at 17.

  19. avatar bc says:

2nd round pick a WR – Possible candidates are Brian Robiske, Mike Thomas & Jarret Dillard.

  20. avatar Nick says:

Knowshon followed by Mike Thomas could be one of the worst first day draft days of any team this year.

  21. avatar Chris B. says:

If Sanchez is there at 17, you have to pick him up. A WR is only as good as the QB and right now, I still don’t believe we have a franchise QB.

  22. avatar CRIMSON-SE7EN says:

I hope Leonhard does not go to Philly? The Jets cannot afford to get into a bidding war for a player they thought could get at a reasonable cost.

  23. avatar Jonathan says:

football outsiders do not like moreno at all.

  24. avatar Harvlis says:

I think Ryan’s Defense will be bringing the pressure. This should get the whole team excited. On the other hand, I don’t think much of Schottenheimer. His play calling has been horrible.

I would jump on Percy Harvin. He can break it, from anywhere on the field. He is a versatile weapon. The more weapons, the better. Then, I would stockpile Offensive linemen. We have no depth. To expect two injury-free seasons in a row would be too much.

  25. avatar metsman says:

    nicks round 1
    dillard later in the draft

  26. avatar jpejet says:

I kind of agree with Glauber. It feels different this year. There is a plan and pedigree with this coach, and he seems to actually know something about leadership.
Call me stupid, but I am not done on Kellen Clemens. If Justin McCarens could catch a seem pass, Clemens would have at least one more win, maybe more. I am eager to see what he is capable of doing with a coach that wants him to succeed as opposed to one that is waiting for him to fail.

  27. avatar david i says:

Harvlis…great point about the injuries and I agree to go after lineman in the draft, but on both sides of the ball.

  28. avatar Mike says:

dont draft a qb. sanchez has played only 1 year and is unproven. i think hes goin to be a bust. give a clemens a chance to show what he can do behind a good offensive line

  29. avatar JerryB says:

I don’t think you can count on Sheppard getting back to his probowl form. I would still draft a corner in the first round if one of the top two are available. Then come back with Robiske in the second round. Even though our need for a WR is greater, CB’s are more valuable. None of the WRs that will be available can be compared to the elite WRs in the league.
