Coles Visits Bengals

by Bassett on March 2nd, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Although the free agent market might not be as frenzied for Laveranues Coles as he’d like with just the Bills showing serious interest so far, he’s had a second team in the running for his services in the Cincinnati Bengals.

He’d be an interesting fit for the Bengals.  Coles taking over Housh’s role and Ocho Cinco going deep, not bad …

im really worried about our WR situation for next year.

it looks more and more like our 2nd receiver will come from the draft.

    Team needs: WR, 2nd TE, 3rd RB, DT/DE, S, 3rd CB

  2. avatar gsteigs says:

that 2nd receiver your talking about i think will come from the draft and hes going to be listed as our #1

  3. avatar Chris says:

    Hakeem Nicks!

But you’re right. We need to sign a DE, draft Moala in Rd 3, draft a Rb, OG, OT and S/Cb- versatile type guy.

  4. avatar AKA....Drew says:

No suprise here….he will probably get a nice deal since Cinn will need to replace Housh quickly..

Once again a player taking a risk and will get paid but play for an awful team..

There are some WR’s out there lik D Henderson, Curry etc that can fill a #3 spot after we draft a big WR

Here’s what Chris Baker got from the Pats for anyone that still regrets the decision not to pay him $9m in guaranteed money:

Five years, $14.4 million, including a $1.5 million signing bonus. There’s a $1.2 million option bonus in 2011 and $100,000 workout bonuses each season. His base salaries are $1.6 million, $2.0 million, $2.1 million, $2.6 million and $2.9 million

Basically, they will be able to get rid of him with a minimal cap hit as soon as he has outlived his usefulness.

Is the general consensus that, of the receivers in the draft, Crabtree is the best by a fairly significant margin, followed by Maclin, Bey, Nicks and perhaps Harvin? It will be interesting to see what we do if, say, Crabtree and Maclin and gone at #17. I’d rather trade back and hope we can land at least the 3rd best of the 3 remianing WRs perhaps in late Rd 1 or early Rd 2.

Frankly, as I mentioned previously, I wouldn’t be devestated if we missed on all of them and gave Stuckey and Henry a chance to see if they can play. I might feel differently if we had a proven QB to throw to them but we don’t…

  7. avatar Jared says:

all preference, I personally think Nicks is the most NFL ready and similar to Crabtree without the fanfare

Crabtree, Nicks, Maclin are the three I’d like there, I think Harvin has a lot of the same skills as a Leon, don’t want him, and not a fan of Bey’s football production, think he could be a bust

As you can see the other teams are viewing Coles as a number two receiver. This was exactly our problem we were using him as a number one when he is not geared for that position. I know he older, but he will certainly due a lot better when he is getting a team’s second corners and not be double teamed. We still need a number one receiver for the others to do better.

I would rate my WR wish list as

    1. Crabtree ( no chance LOL)
    2. Macklin ( only because Cotch is a possesiom guy)
    2a. Nicks ( a beast!)
    4. DHB

  10. avatar CRIMSON-SE7EN says:

Hakeem Nicks without a doubt is who the Jets should target! DHB = Bernard Berrian no thanks!

  11. avatar TJBfan says:

Rumor is tj lands with the seahawks. If so one less team drafting WR(maybe)

  12. avatar LukeV says:

we all know coles is staying in the division… Its the afceast way!

  13. avatar Brabble says:

I feel like Bey would be a huge bust, when you watch him he doesn’t do anything too special except run fast. Hakeem Nicks seems ready for the NFL because he has proven his ability to catch and also break the tackles to get the yards after catch. Plus he is speedy too.

  14. avatar Le'Sean Roberts says:

Harvin, Nicks, Heyward-Bey, Kenny Britt, Tiquan Underwood

I lost all my respec for Coles when he Gave Mangini the nickname of Penguin. I thought that was totally irrespectfull. But looking back, knowing a small part of his life story, his decisions, II have come to respect the man that he is. I trully think that he is 100% loyal and a true person. I have come to respect his sincerety, and his honesty. Good luck Coles, Find happiness in your life.

    A true fan,

    Hank

LC should think about firing his agent because no one is gonna pay him anything close to what he thought he was gonna get when he went free agent.

It sucks seeing a guy skills deteriorate but he made himself expendable with all the whining and the drops. Part of me will never forgive him for that fourth down in Seattle

  17. avatar Paul says:

If Coles is so loyal, he should take substantially less money and sign with Miami. This way he could play with Pennington like he so claims he wants to.

  18. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Bent, thanks for the Baker numbers. It looks like Baker gets what he would have been paid here for only one year (had we kept him) and then makes less in the second year.

The big downside for Baker is that nothing is guaranteed except the 1.5 mil.

It appears he refused to concede on what he had negotiated with Tanny only to find out that the marketplace was going to force him to concede it.

I predict that Baker does OK in NE, given the QB and the WR. I think he will get his money. However, I suspect Tanny would have given him the same non-guaranteed deal and he would have done OK here.

Tanny’s choices to let players go so far have worked out except this one: Coles and Barton are still unsigned. Leonhard is still unsigned. Moore did not get the big deal he wanted elsewhere.

Only Baker got a deal and not for more and not guaranteed.

Tanny may or may not get the right players. But he has proven beyond all doubt in his sense of value.

And except for the guys who used Kendall’s agent, he has demonstrated integrity in the process.

Don’t worry, Coles will be back with the Jets.

He is testing his value on the market and will realize that the grass is not greener.

This is also good for the Jets because they now will be able to sign Coles fo the balance of his career. A contract that works for both party’s a win/win.

I want Coles to finnish his career as a Jet! This is where he belongs!
