Now that the team has made some moves on the defensive side of the ball, are there any plans to address the offense prior to next month’s draft? Specifically, are there any plans to look at free agent QB’s such as Byron Leftwich or Kurt Warner?
Also, is there any word on Jim Leonhard potentially signing with the Jets?
-
What’s the mindset towards not pursuing one of the young DE’s on Free Agency? With Ellis’ clear decline, why not be motivated to get younger there now that the other levels of the defense have been upgraded?
-
please get a word out to management that we need a tall fast WR.
-
We need to trade for Cutler!!!! it would be huge for us
-
Jay G
You are basically the only guy who wants Cutler, do you know most of his team don’t even like the guy that much, he is a huge chemistry killer and on top of that he is super arrogant, the kid is good and all but not as good as he proclaims he is, and I would take Ratliff or KC over him any day.
-
Now to more important things, what will happen to Lowery, if Ivy and Leonhard become Jets, where does that leave Lowery if Leonhard is expected to play strong safety and Ivy plays the nickel, Lowery is too got to play the dime, so how do we use him to his full potential?
-
Anyone that doesn’t like PRivs needs to hit the bricks!
-
After this weekend what is our approximate cap ?
-
If you were Mike Tannenbaum, who would your first four picks be? If I was to pick mine would have to be:
1st-Jeremy Maclin or Knowshon Moreno
2nd-William Moore or Mike Mickens
3rd-Jarron Gilbert or Nate Davis
4th-Bear Poscoe or Dannell Ellerbe -
I want Cutler too.
Chris – Ellis’ clear decline? Did you watch the team last year? He was our leader in sacks and was just as good against the run. He may be getting old, but he still has some good years left in him. Not to say im against pursuing a younger defensive end, but Ellis played well.
-
nyckage, you would take Ratliff or Clemens over Cutler? Really? Really? Wow, now that is certainly “mind boggling”.
-
What should the Jets do to improve the defensive end position? Should they look at Bertrand Berry? Should the Jets look at picking up a free agent running back like Dominic Rhodes? I think the Jets should give Clemens and/or Ratliff a shot at the QB position, but they need to pick up a veteran like Byron Leftwich for insurance.
-
If the Jets do choose to go after and acquire a quality vet QB for the 2009 season, do you think they would also go after a play-maker someone “like a” Chad Johnson with height and speed to be the teams #1 WR?
-
Just for the record I would take Cutler in a heartbeat…Still amazes he is getting killed on TJB.
I am not going to keep defending him but if we would have drafted him #4 3 years ago every Jet fan would be in love with J Culter.
We cant get him so it dosent matter but those you wouldnt want him are crazy
-
Jay G,
Cutler has the same problems that Favre did. He has a strong arm, but takes too many risks. Favre never would have won a super bowl, if it wasn’t for the Packers defense. Favre was an average QB at best, but he had a strong arm and didn’t miss games. Without the super bowl and the consecutive game streak, he wouldn’t even be mentioned in the conversation of greatest QB. Favre’s reputation was inflated by his down to earth country boy image that fans fell in love with. Like Favre, Cutler is a gunslinger that has as many great games as terrible ones. On top of his inconsistent play, Cutler doesn’t have the personality to compensate. He’s arrogant and egotistical. The Jets should steer clear of Cutler.
-
I’m all for the Jets picking up a veteran free agent QB in case Clemens and Ratliff can’t cut it. If the Jets were to make a move on a big money QB, I think it would be a fairly low risk decision to bring in Donovan McNabb. It’s unlikely and I know a lot of Jets fans wouldn’t approve, but I think McNabb is a smart QB that has big play ability and he won’t lose games for the Jets. The catch is that the Jets would have to bring in a premier wide out to lure in McNabb. I don’t know that the Jets have the assets to make a move that big.
-
I am all for Cutler over Clemens
-
ew
-
Anyone who would take Clemens over Cutler clearly doesnt watch the NFL
-
Clint.
Nicks definitely has to at least be considered for Rd 1- Maclin won’t translate to the NFL like Nicks or Heywerd Bey can.
And if Moala is available in Rd 3 and doesn’t get selected by us, then we have serious issues concerning the draft.
-
Clemens played a partial season and led a horrible team. The verdict is still out on Clemens.
-
Ellis stinks. 1 sack final 8 games, the majority of his sack and tackle totals are lumped into 4 games against horrible opponents.
-
I agree that Ellis isnt the player he was earlier in his career, and I would like the Jets to get some younger d-ends to breed into future starters, but I cannot stand ignorant comments like “Ellis stinks”. I also recall, in the final 8 games, him winning that Buffalo game for us with that late game TD.
-
Wouldnt mind culter with an attitude adjustment, ill take ratliff, and clemens…..my question is why not trade thomas jones ?hes coming off one of his best years, i dont think hes that good of a rb and i think knowshow moreno is younger, most likely the same speed as jones , knowson see holes better then jones..
As far as lowery hes insurance, he a good cb that got picked on every play because of revis, he can only get better, but is a work in progress, ivry i think is a mistake but depth….. -
if we traded Jones then that leaves us with a huge hole at starting RB that could not be replaced by any rookie back.
-
Ignorant?? Dude- you have no idea. Sure, he won the game on a fluke play that should’ve never been called…thanks. That was one of 5 games in which he actually showed up.
I’m not going to debate this, it’s clear he is about as inconsistent as you can get. I’m not saying there isn’t a place for him on this team. But it’s not as a starter. If him and Coleman are our starting ends. Then, this defense is not much better. And it won’t be the unit we need to win games.
They gave up an average of 21 per the last 10 games of the season and that needs to come down at least 5 pts for this defense to be solid and win some games. Obviously, we won’t blow the doors off folks with the Qb. So, although I like Scott and Sheppard- we have more work folks.
-
you would consider tj a huge whole , what does he do that special……i see people talking about drafting a reciever first, it take atleast two years for a reciever to get off the ball in the nfl, especially the jets with an in experienced qb and no proven #1 wr
-
You have to realize that when you make comments like “Ellis stinks” they are going to be called ignorant. I just told you we could use an upgrade, but to say Ellis stinks is a ridiculous comment, and theres no denying that. The hole Jets defense disappeared for most of the games, not just Ellis, but we also know that it could be blamed on horrible play calling by Mangini/Sutton. When you have a very unagressive defense, that doesnt use their OLB’s properly, and they are dropping back in coverage, it is going to make it very difficult for your defensive ends to get any pressure. Ellis had as good of a season statistically as any 3-4 D-End in football and youre going to say he stinks? That is ignorance, sorry.
-
When your backup running back is as undersized as Leon Washington, then yes, losing TJ would create a big hole. He was the AFC’s leading rusher, lets not get crazy and act like he is nothing special. How would you suggest replacing TJ?
-
the jets defense last year just seemed tired and playing with no heart or should i say violence
-
For me, looking behind the stats alone = an in depth point of view. I’ll rephrase it. “Ellis stinks as a starting End”. I would keep him for depth.
But what I call ignorance is looking at stats alone and insulting the folks who look against it.
So for me, your ability to rely on what you read and what shows in a box is what I think is ignorant.
-
i like knowson moreno, dont get me wrong thomas jones is 3 yards and a cloud of dust…i like that but if we can get rid of him for a Qb or shhhhhhhh LT(just saying) it would be a good idea because as good as he was last year behind a great run offensive line, he couldnt break it down the sideline for six when he should have last year when the oppertunity presented itself
As far as Ellis hes given so good years for us and still playing hard maybe Bart will light a fire under his ass, bringing him to problow form -
With Ellis’ marijuana history- yes, I think someone can bring him to ‘pro BLOW’ form.
-
You have to realize that its not about simply looking at stats, but do stats account for nothing? Are you trying to claim that I dont watch the actual games? Do you think I spend 3 hours a day on this website talking about the Jets, but dont even watch them play? We can agree to disagree about Ellis, but to say he stinks is clearly not true, and there is no denying that, whether its by looking at numbers, or looking at game footage. I never insulted you, but to say Ellis stinks is insulting to fans who have watched him play for over 8 years and seen that he is a good player. Citing stats is always part of the discussion, but never did I use stats as my sole reason for anything ive said.
-
As far as Wr one name out there Joey Galloway , what do you guys think of that up until last year because he got hurt early he was dominant speedster, maybe to just keep the ship moving?
-
I’ll take Galloway for cheap.
LT in NY? nice idea, but wouldnt we have to give SD a considerable amount of draft picks for him? Is it really worth it? LT has been looking old and slow lately, something youve been crticizing TJ for. I’d say stick with TJ and draft a back this year to contribute. Dont look at TJ’s age, instead look at the number of carries hes had. Since he didnt see much action early in his career, he still has fresh lefs.

No- I’m not saying you don’t watch. I’m saying, don’t attack my point of view by telling me he had good stats. Well, I disagree because I watch the games. I’m at them. And the guy is invisible 70% of the time. And that’s what I see. I also saw a ridiculous collapse and he was one the biggest disappearing acts. Could it be come coaching…sure but I cannot blame it all on that. We need a starting DE.
Forget 8 yrs, I know he was very good. Did he ever live up to a top 15 pick? No. But he was a solid player, who I liked and still do. But guess what, so was Eric Barton. And we moved on, right. And maybe Lowery could be a solid #2 but we upgraded, right.
So Ellis has declined. And from what I saw, especially the 2nd half of the year, as an every down End- Shaun Ellis stunk. No disrespect but I thought he was horrible. Sorry- I do. I don’t care that he collected 4 sacks in 4 games against terrible teams, or that he got over 30% of his tackles in 2 games against terrible teams. I care that he was invisible in a lot of games. And maybe it was the coaching but I attribute it more to an aging end who cannot hold up in a 3 lineman front.
-
one more thing before i go i Do not whant Snachez( or how ever he spells it ) for Usc he is a big first round risk…it pisses me off when is hear or see this on people mock drafts
nice talking to you guys, thanks
-
I dont know why you choose to say that your point of view is being “attacked”, but I can assure you it is not. I have season tickets, and I was at the games as well, but to tell you the truth, it is much easier to analyze players while watching on TV, especially since I DVR the games. Ellis didnt have a great season, but he had a pretty good one, and to say he stinks is way off. Thats my opinion, you dont have to agree with me, and thats fine. But my point was there is a lot more evidence that shows he is pretty good then there is saying he stinks, which is why I brought up the numbers.
Did he live up to the top 15 pick? I dont know, maybe, maybe not. But hes been to 2 pro bowls, and has impressive career sack totals, has played almost every game, so I would say he probably has.
And I agreed with you about him declining and to tell you the truth I dont even think we are disagreeing on ANYTHING other than the fact that you said Ellis stinks.
Also, recording 6 sacks in the first 7 games could have also been a result of strong play by Kris Jenkins which began declining down the stretch. but for the most part his tackle numbers remained consistent for what thats worth. 30% of is tackles in 2 games? Not even close.
Like I said from the begining, I would like some new d-ends, I was saying the Jets should have went after Chris Canty, so we have no disagreement there. But Ellis stinks? come on.
-
Revis.
I appreciate our debates, it’s healthy and shows good football fans. I think alot of what we try to convey gets lost in the computer translation.
So, I don’t feel attacked as much as I feel people can choose words. To disagree and then to call someone ignorant are two seperate things. But moving on…
Ellis had 60 total tackles this year.
In Week 14 vs San fran he had 8.
In week 15 vs Buffalo he had 11.
That’s not only close to 30%, it’s actually 32%!!
Now, it’s interesting to see that he had those tackles during the weak point of his season, when the sacks basically disappeared but in those games, each team ran over 32 times and moved the ball very well, so Ellis was the front man- and none of those tackles went for a loss. Also, 5 of those in the Buffalo game were assists, so they were gang tackling after 4+ yd runs. Barring a ridiculous Jauron call, the Jets lose both games.
Just sayin…
-
Yea, I see the tackle numbers, I was just looking at the individual tackle numbers, not including the assists, so I see what you were saying. Those high tackle numbers down the stretch were probably a result of the decline in Jenkins production, and the overall decline in the run defense, which inevitably led to more tackles for Ellis.

it has nothing to do with their skills, Cutler is far better than both of them put together, but it’s just they way they think and how they conduct themselves which i like about them, and I think Jets like KC and ratliff which is more for what i can say about Cutler and the Broncos
-
Listen, I usually stand by every move the Jets make because I am a die hard fan of not only the team, but also the front office, GM, coaches, etc. So I would be 100% behind the Jets if they went with either Clemens or Ratliff, but If there is any sort of opportunity to trade for Cutler, the Jets would do it in a heart beat, and I would be behind that moe.
-
IM jets fan since 1980, Im so nervous, I want a wining team, I suffered a lot with the jets every year, every year I have wining dreams but…., we need now a suer qb, please bring kurt warner or ja cutler, ratliffwill be come a jets qb, but not now, now we have to win fans confidense, win wining dreams, win a winning team, come on jets directive spend a smart money
-
My question is will Ryan focus on fixing the offense entirely from the draft vs FA — and would they select Sanchez/Stafford if either falls to 17?
FYI – been a fan since ’67, was 11 when Namath held up his finger after Supe 3, been waiting ever since. -
With they typical Jets QB types (veteran/immobile) being plucked off the market….do you think there is any possibility of the Jets making a trade for Seneca Wallace? He’s atypical of what the Jets have gone for the past couple of years but he filled in “well” for Hassleback last year and a change of pace might do the Jets some good.

Do you think the Jets should/will make a play for Jay Cutler?
