Cassel ‘Knew’ He Was Being Traded

by Bassett on March 3rd, 2009 at 8:57 am

Matt Cassel relates to the Boston Globe that he knew he was going to be traded.

“I was resolved in the fact that I was going to get traded elsewhere,” Cassel said on a conference call. “I didn’t know when or at what time, but [when] I got the phone call, I was very excited.”

I think we all knew that the tag was a vehicle for them to trade him, but isn’t the point of the franchise tag to keep players you intend to … you know … keep?

How is this being flaunted in the face of the league and no actions being taken on the subject?

I mis-interpret-ed the ruuu-els …

Careful how many stones you throw from the Jets glass house where John Abraham was once franchised and traded …

The NFL is modern day slavery think of all the wasted talent thats just wasting away in horrible spots in the us. Oakland Asmougha, Carolina Peppers, and it hasnt happened to Calvin Johnson, Yet and that will be another career token by the Lions(BARRY SANDERS).
There needs to be rules behind the Franchise Tag.

This was a great move by NE…..As much as I like to hate them …… they do everything right as a franchise….even when they cheat and/or massage the rules a little.

I hear San Fran is talking to Kurt Warner.

Can we just move on from the Patriots and always analyzing how they might have broken rules. I mean, it’s really pathetic as a Jets fan.

I hate every single person up there but honestly, they are the smartest people in the league. So, let’s move past it and figure out our own ways to be intelligent.

Everyone knew he was being traded. No team can keep 2 Qb’s with top 5 salaries. It just isn’t going to happen.

So- let’s get on it. Focusing on that team does no one any good. We should build a team that kicks their ass twice a year and other than that- forget they even exist!

im tired of hearing about cassel

this is not close to a violation of the rules. a team is free under league rules to trade any players under contract, whatever type of contract it is.

kyle, if you think the franchise tag is akin to slavery, what do you say to the draft? you don’t find it odd that college graduates entering their chosen profession can’t choose what city they will work and live in?

I think Cassel just mis-remembered what he thinks he knowed…(thanks Emmitt !)

the franchise tag in this situation served the purpose of keeping Cassell out of the AFC East. It let New England control where he went and at the same time gave them a Plan B if Brady wasn’t coming along. I’m guessing Brady looks up to form

And once again, Jay Mariotti is the voice of reason in the room.

    (I can’t believe it either.)

I wasnt aware it was against the rules to trade a franchise player…

Regardless of the team who did it, a team would be stupid to let a valued franchise player walk with no compensation. Therefore the tag would be warranted in this case. Heck even the commish knew Cassell was going to be traded. A team only 2 mil under the cap is going to tie up 30 mil to 1 position?

Not that I wish this, but what if Brady re-injures the knee. Then this move looks very foolish.

  13. avatar Davo says:

Heh. Yeah James, imagine if the Patriots lose their franchise QB for the year and an unknown, 2nd year QB steps in and leads them to a superbowl….sure, that could NEVER happen….could it? *gulp*
