Buzz: Is It Really Up to Clemens & Ratliff?

by Bassett on March 4th, 2009 at 10:58 am

Still catching up on yesterday’s nuggets …

Hutch wrote on NJ.com that the Jets are likely out of the veteran quarterback market.

One can argue that the Jets are taking a chance by not signing a veteran quarterback, but Ryan insists the organization is ready to go to battle with either Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff. The thinking here is that a Jeff Garcia or Byron Leftwich would be only stop-gap measures and the Jets need to find out if one of their current guys is the answer.

Just like the Jets were ready to do battle with Pennington or Clemens. Oops.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Last summer the party line was all about Clemens and Pennington and their battle, while deflecting any interest in Favre until they actually got him. In theory it’s a good idea to let the youngsters battle, all I know is that I’m not letting the front office shine me on this offseason all over again.

  1. avatar Pat says:

All I hear is “Clemens and Ratliff” but why is there never any mention of Erik Ainge? He’s a solid prospect, with good size and arm strength who played in a tough SEC conference. He also has a year in this offense under his belt.

So why is he always ignored when it comes to QB conversations?

  2. avatar Mike D. says:

    Pat,

Erik Ainge was a 5th round draft pick for a reason, he’s still incredibly RAW, was suspended last season for taking banned substances, and should not even be considered in the starting QB discussions.

Kellen and Ratliff is what a training camp QB competition is all about. I think there’s a solid player between the two of tehm and if they both end up sucking then we’ll go all out to get the face of our franchise in April 2010.

  3. avatar Pat says:

Mike, I understand Clemens and Ratliff are the more polished of the three. However, don’t give me the argument that he was a 5th round draft pick.

Tom Brady was drafted in what round? How high a player was drafted is meaningless. I still think he can emerge as a darkhorse — he has all the tools.

  4. avatar D$ says:

    Give Kellen a shot.

  5. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

I don’t understand why folks cannot distinguish between panic that inspires the team to sign the best available, that is to say one of the more expensive, QBs who has so far failed to perform and the patience that will be rewarded during training camp when we pick up a cheap vet.

Obviously, except for Kurt Warner, all the available QBs who have proven their worth (and some who have not) are tied up in contracts with team.

The dregs are available. Some of these previously unsuccessful QBs may well be able to play better than RatLens. But there is no assurance that they will have any more success here than they have not had elsewhere. And, any signed in the next month or two will command higher salaries than if they sign once training camp has opened and they realize they will be lucky to just have a job.

Hence, the smart move, the one we are witnessing, is to let the marketplace squash their value so we can wait and pick the best available cheap vet as cheaply as possible.

IOW, I predict the Jets will pick up a vet, unless Sanchez drops to us, much later and for a minimum salary.

GIVE RATLIFF A FAIR SHOT WITH THE 1ST UNIT NOT THE BACKUPS.

  7. avatar Gary G. says:

    http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/football/story/931488.html

Makes me feel a little better that we have the 17th pick, one pick over the Dolphins.

At least it will cost the Dolphins something to move ahead of the Jets if they want to steal a particular wide receiver before us.

That alone should give the Jets every incentive to let it be known that they are interested in every possible receiver in that area of the draft.

  8. avatar Rich R. says:

Pat, we’re not really comparing Erik Ainge to Tom Brady, are we? At the end of the day, Ainge may not even make the roster, let alone win the starting job.

I still believe at some point a veteran QB such as Leftwich or Garcia will be added to the roster to compete with Clemens and Ratliff for the job.

  9. avatar Mike D. says:

No, its not worthless. How often does a “Tom Brady” come along? Please.

The most recent QBs to win a SB:
    - Ben Roth – 1st round
    - Eli Manning – 1st overall
    - Peyton Manning – 1st overall

QBs get drafted based on their skill set and how likely they are to become a successful player in the NFL. Ainge was not rated very high and rightfully so, he couldn’t even keep the starting job during his tenure at U of Tennessee.

  10. avatar Pat says:

Of course I’m not comparing Ainge and Brady! I’m saying you can’t discount a player because of where he was drafted, that’s all.

  11. avatar J says:

This team is designed to beat up the opposing offense, and chew up the clock on the ground. We do not have home run hitters except for Leon, a quality QB benefits from good skill players, which at this team we do not have enough of.

  12. avatar blee says:

So is everyone against drafting Sanchez if he falls to us at 17? Would you rather go with a raw WR like harvin or DHB?
Or buff up the D more w/ a player like DE Jackson?

  13. avatar johnl says:

we need to move up in the draft and get a great o.lineman….kellen or ratty will do fine.

  14. avatar Mike D. says:

johnl, you do know we resigned Brandon Moore. there’s no way we’re drafting a offensive lineman.

its going to be a WR in the first — kenny britt or hakeem nicks (preference) then a 3-4 DE in the 2nd round. bank on it.

  15. avatar frank m says:

We need to find out what we have in the mini camp and then look at What is available in the draft. We need to draft a big qb with a good arm. Cavanaugh can work with him.
We should have taken Cutler when we had the chance.
Contrary to what the jets want us to believe . Fergusen Jenkens is not a franchise left tackle. he is not even close.

  16. avatar VCD says:

Or a NT like Ron Brace in the 2nd.

I’m a fan of either DHB or Britt (if Maclin is unavailable) in the first.

  17. avatar starz31 says:

I don’t know much about kenny britt or hakeem nicks, can you elaborate?…you don’t think Maclin or Bay will be available with our pick…I would like one of those two.

Harvin is very raw…he’s not really even a WR…they used him all over on offense. He’s also not the “prototypical” WR we’re looking for. Teams are still unsure how to use him because he’s not established enough as a WR to be compared to a Santana Moss type.

  18. avatar Lox says:

I think the best move is to grab a play-making WR at the 17th spot. Either Maklin or Heyward-Bey. IF Crabtree drops out of the top 10 (very unlikely) – we should make a move for him.

1st round is typically where #1 wideouts are found and this draft is deep with them.

Avoid Sanchez in the draft – what makes him a better prospect than Clemens or Ratliff? He is just as a big a risk.

  19. avatar JerryB says:

If Sanchez is available at 17 I would trade down with the Vikings (22). Based on the trade chart this would give us another 3rd round pick. With 4 picks in the first 3 rounds, we could fill needs at WR, TE, DE & DT with players that would contribute this year.

  20. avatar klecko71 says:

if sanchez is there at 17, there will be teams who want him worse then us.

hello to a trade down and picking up some extra draft picks….

unless the WR we are dying to have is there of course.

  21. avatar JL says:

Unless they’re gonna bring in Donovan McNabb, I’ll take my chances with Clemens and Ratliff.

Do you really want a retread like Leftwich or someone of his level? There are reasons why this tier QB is available — they SUCK.

If we can’t make another big splash at QB, then let’s find out what we have!

  22. avatar ken says:

I agree with Ryan 100% i am sure we have a QB in the House.

  23. avatar starz31 says:

I think it should be an open competition in camp…I think Kellen has the tools to be successful. He’s been holding the clipboard long enough and will finally get a chance to play with an O-line and a running game…two things he did not have in 2007. Chad didn’t fair well either in 2007.

Yes, its a risk going into the season without a proven QB, but I think these two guys have talent and they wont be worse off than Jay Fielder, Ray Lucas, or Patrick Ramsey. (Fielder actually looked good in his lone throw )

  24. avatar subwayfare says:

There’s a difference between this year and last when the Jets took the last minute, one-year flier on Favre. Last year it was widely concluded that Pennington was going to beat out Clemens and the organization was skeptical of Chad’s ability to stay healthy and get a team deep into the playoffs.

When #4 suddenly became available it provided an opportunity to cut ties with a QB who, due to his injury history, didn’t inspire long-term confidence. Throw in the PR opportunities that come with signing an all-timer and it seemed worth a shot.

This year there’s enough excitement and PR with the new coach, who many expect to win with defense. His team went deep into the playoffs with a rookie QB last year. It’s a situation that’s as good as any for giving one of the young QBs on the roster a chance to prove his worth.

I just don’t think the scenario is comparable to last year.

  25. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I think my boy Kellen Clemens is going to suprise some people this summer. The kid has got talent….Everyone forgets that KC ripped up the preseason 2 tears ago just like everyone’s favorite back-up Ratliff did last summer.

  26. avatar JerryB says:

Every QB is unproven until they get a chance to play. Favre (a 2nd rd choice like Clemens) and Brady spent a year+ on the bench as “unproven” QBs before getting their chance.

  27. avatar ED says:

For the tenth time: we need a vet. Huard or Simms would be cheap, both are solid back-ups, and they wouldn’t threaten Rattie or KC. Pull the trigger! What if we have an injury of two? The whole season is gone…again. We NEED A VET.

  28. avatar JerryB says:

    Ed,
Why do we need a loser. There are no winning vet QBs on the market. If a QB has a proven record of losing,I don;t want him.

  29. avatar Dean Barbella says:

I really hope it’s up to Clemens & Ratliff, though Jets would never tip their real intentions – hense, Brett Favre last year.

I feel that Clemens has the arm and the accurracy to make every throw (even in December). He had 1st round worthy success with the Oregon Ducks and played well without an offensive line, running game, weapons or a defense.

Imagine what he can do with this team?! And, he knows Schottenheimer’s playbook!

The best QB trade this year will be the one that we don’t make. Let the competition begin!

  30. avatar JerryB says:

BTW, anyone interested in the full 7 round draft order can find it at http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d80eef17e&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true. The only changes will be when compensitory picks are added.

  31. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Just for all of the Ratliff fanatics out there…….

Clemens 2007 Preseason stats against 1&2 string:
    30 – 41 369 yrds 73.2% 4 TDS 2 INT 112.2 rating

    Ratliff’s 2008 Preseason stats against 2&3 stringers:
    32 – 47 490 yrds 68.1% 4TDS 1 INT 122.6 rating

I am all for people loving Ratliff but lets not forget about Kellen. The guy was never given a fair shot to win this job with legit talent around him

  32. avatar sackexchange says:

i think clemens or ratliff will be fine.. sanchez doesnt have the arm remember woody johnnson said we will not go on without a solid arm again meaning after penningtons are. which is what sanchez has and he only has on solid year at usc as starter. as far as drafting a receiver its an alright idea but not in the jets best intentions, one it in most cases takes a wr at least a year to get off the ball as a professional, 2 we need depth at DE or NT and after about the 20 th pick in this years draft those positions will start to be slim, so i say draft d-line first round……the jets drafted in the late rounds last year a tall fast receiver what was his name?where is he ? he look decent and i thought he was going to make the team last year but thought mangini had his favorites

  33. avatar Bent says:

Before anyone asks – there is absolutely no chance the Jets get any compensatory picks.

These are done by weighing up UFAs signed against UFAs lost and after all the guys we brought in last year, there is no way they’ll get a pick.

  34. avatar LAJetsFan says:

Why is everybody talking about Kellen Clemens as if he hasn’t gotten a “chance” yet? He ripped it up two preseasons ago? Seriously? That’s what he’s got going for him? I remember him playing two REGULAR seasons ago and playing like a second string QB. Why is that something to get excited about?

Honestly, performing really well in preseason doesn’t mean anything to me. Ratliff did amazing, big deal. It’s no different to me than watching a draft prospect kick butt and take names at the combine and then do nothing in the NFL. You’ve got “workout warriors” and you’ve got “preseason Pro Bowlers.” Clemens tore it up, did he? Nobody’s talking about how big a relief it was to get Chad back in there after Kellen Clemens had his shot two years ago.

They me rephrase that: Kellen Clemens has already had a chance to show what he’s got…and the best I can say is that he wasn’t awful. Now, I’m not saying dump the guy and not give him a shot. He deserves another shot, absolutely. Let the young guys compete. But we need to add another youngster to the mix, someone with a little more potential. And maybe Clemens comes out and wins the starting spot regardless. Great, whoever the coaches decide gives up the best chance to win, I’m all for it – be it Clemens, Ratliff, or somebody else. I’d feel safer, though, if that “somebody else” is a top QB prospect in this year’s draft rather than just Erik Ainge.

  35. avatar sackexchange says:

wow lajets fan check your stats, clemens had a better first nine games the eli manning did his first nine games and i think but not sure eli has a superbowl

  36. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

Clemens and Rtliff competing for a starting job sounds ok, but we need another veteran to come into the mix (for CHEAP $) and get the fire lit under them.
Anyone will do, Huard, Grossman, Simms whatever, they are intended to be a back up. Keep in mind that we are two injuries away from a third string QB. 2005? 1999? should we throw a season away because were too cheap to sign Huard to a veteran minimum? no way!

  37. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

LAJetsfan- Peyton Manning would look horrible behind the O line in 07. QBs cost a lot. I’m not against drafting one in the first, but if he can’t beat out Clemens or Ratliff we wasted a lot. I wasn’t relieved when Chad played Tenn or the Pats in 07. I was tired of watching 3 yard dumpoffs and every incompletion Chad had at Tenn was an INT.

  38. avatar LAJetsFan says:

And for everyone who wants to put all these big, offensive holes on the back burner in favor of drafting players for defensive depth…we’re filling our defensive holes with quality free agents, guys with some proven experience and talent in the NFL. I think that’s good and that’s the way to go. I’d be happy to draft some potential back-ups in the later rounds, 2nd round the earliest. I think it’s wise, however, to get some offensive power in the first round (assuming, of course, someone of value is available: one of the big QBs or WRs? someone like Wells or Moreno?).

In the end, I think we should go with the best available player in the first round, which will most likely be an offensive playmaker. But if they’re all gone and there’s an awesome defensive dude staring us in the face, grab him.

  39. avatar sackexchange says:

i agree with vinnywasthebest except grossman, and im high on simms, simms would be a perfect fit to come imn and copete with clemens and ratliff… it wouldnt be that big of a confidence killer to clems, rat that farve was

  40. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    nugent signed with tampa.

  41. avatar J says:

3 Yard completions are fine as long as we get the W. Some of the best teams had a dominant D and an offense that was boring. No mistakes on O and we will be alright.

  42. avatar 96debacle says:

Clemens has that black cloud of the 2007 games hanging over his head.
Point- he was the worse starting QB in the NFL that year.
with that being said he had no running game or OL. due to those two things he was throwing on the run. its hard to read defenses for the first time and get up to speed in the NFL for a rookie QB when your constantly running around.

we have to find our franchise QB and that means starting somewhere. right nowwe are starting in house.we have 3 QB to evaulate and still have a draft coming up. signing a QB in free agency is still not out of the question.

its not a very comfortable feeling when you are unsure who your starting QB is but if your serious about finding that Franchise face you have to evalute the talent. this may take more than this year. How many Truelly Franchise QB’s are starting in the NFL?

  43. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    LA Jets fan……

My point was everybody is blowing Ratliff from his 08 preseason numbers…I was just showing that KC did just as well the year before…. Plus Chad finishes 2nd in the MVP voting in 2008 and is dismantled behind our OL in 2007. To say that KC got a fair shot in the 8 starts in 2007 is ridiculous. Were you watching those games?

He was running for his life as soon as he snappes the ball

  44. avatar LAJetsFan says:

sackexchange – I don’t recall saying that Eli Manning had a better first nine games than Kellen Clemens, did I? Besides…what exactly does Eli getting better and winning a Super Bowl have to do with Kellen Clemens? They have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Clemens has just as good a shot at falling flat on his face this season as he does at playing well. In fact, the odds are probably more against him than for him.

That’s moot, though. I never said don’t give Kellen a shot. I said, repeatedly, that he deserves every chance in the world to win the job. So does Ratliff. I just believe, rather strongly, that if we have a chance to draft a top prospect at QB this year in the first or second round, we absolutely should, just to add to the competition. Because, in my mind, it’s risky business banking on Clemens and Ratliff alone, since one or both of them would have to overachieve in order to perform any better than adequate.

Then again, with Rex Ryan’s as our coach, we may not need a QB who’s any better than adequate. We could be the Ravens with Trent Dilfer this year and win a Super Bowl, who knows?

  45. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

THE REASON I SAID GROSSMAN WAS AT LEAST HE HAS A FULL SEASON UNDER HI BELT AND PLAYOFFS TOO. I DEFINATELY THINK HE SUX WITH A TINY CHANCE OF REDEEMING HIMSELF. 3RD STRINGER ALL THE WAY. BUT CHEAP.

  46. avatar sackexchange says:

no i said that its fact

  47. avatar sackexchange says:

clemen had a better first nine games without a o-line that eli had his first nine with a tiki barber led nfl rushing line ..this is fact

  48. avatar sackexchange says:

heres some stats for the clemens haters
at Eli’s first 8 games and compare them to Kellen Clemens…

  49. avatar zenlaw says:

Subwayfare makes an excellent point why the 2009 season is very different from 2008.

I’ve said this before but it bears repeating….

KC and Ratliff both benefit from knowing the Jets’ offense rather than a vet, who would have to learn the system. Also, KC and Ratliff benefit from having learned under Favre for the past year.

The Jets need to start either KC or Ratliff and if that starter fails due to injury or lack of success, try the other. This way, heading into the QB-rich 2010 draft, the Jets will know whether either of the QB’s currently on their roster are keepers.

  50. avatar sackexchange says:

hmm he had his chance to shine isnt that what you said …so what you are saying is that you would have givien up on eli also…..Clemens will be just fine

  51. avatar LAJetsFan says:

I agree that Clemens didn’t have it easy in 2007. The starting position wasn’t handed to him on a silver platter. But at the same time, that doesn’t give him a “pass.” Granted, the O-line was terrible, but talent is talent, and his first impression wasn’t what any of us hoped it would be.

I don’t hate Kellen Clemens, though, despite what you may think. I’m rooting for him. And I know the first pick is valuable and expensive, and when you spend it on a potential franchise QB, there’s a ton of pressure to succeed with that pick. I completely understand that. I want to give Clemens a shot and see what he can do, and I want to give Ratliff an equal shot. Ainge, too. Why not? We’ve got young guns, let’s evaluate our in-house talent.

That doesn’t make me any more confident than I should be in our QB situation, though. It’s a big fat question mark right now. And when you’ve got a big question mark for your starting QB, you shouldn’t ignore a top QB in the draft.

Mind you, I don’t think the Jets should in any way trade up to get a QB in the draft! I’m not enamored with any QB in particular, I’m not determined beyond reason to draft a QB. Like I said, with the moves we’ve made, the smartest pick seems to be a “best player available” pick right now. I just believe that there’s a chance a top QB prospect may be the best player available when we pick (or a WR), and it’d be a risky, gutsy move to pass on one and put all of eggs in Clemens’ or Ratiff’s basket.

  52. avatar LAJetsFan says:

sackexchange – I’m NOT giving up on Kellen Clemens. Really, how many times do I have to say that I want to give him another shot? If I’d said that I wished Tanny traded him or cut him, then I’d understand why you want to bash me for giving up on him, but I’ve said in every single post that he deserves a chance to WIN the job. When push comes to shove, let the best man win.

  53. avatar Gregory Rasputin says:

I Definitely agree with NOT signing another quarterback.

It’s time to find out what we have and let the chips fall where they may.

IF anything…It may turn out over the next couple of years that we have too much talent at quarterback!

Let’s continue to build the defense. How about some better help for Jenkins…?

  54. avatar sackexchange says:

LA i do agree with you that ratliff is going to push clemens and deserves a shot also…im under the impression that Aingee isnt that bright, and lacked alot in football knowledge…..that was just rumor at a jet practice at rutgers

  55. avatar jetfanATL says:

coming a little late to the party but wanted to throw in my two cents and agree with Pat. Not saying that AInge should be the starter or anything but here are some thoughts….

Eric Ainge actually had a much better college career than Tom Brady did…..started all or part of 3 seasons, holds several UT records, played hurt (one downside was that he was always hurt)… if you all recall Brady was a part time starter at Michigan as Drew Henson was there at the same time. So the argument that he is a 5th round pick seems moot to me…

As for being raw, how can a guy who has 3 years starting experience in the SEC be considered so raw while Ratliff started one year at Utah and is apparently considered the answer by a lot of folks on this. I’m a serious fan but not a guru of QB mechanics or footwork, etc. Please somebody educate me on what Ratliff has that Ainge doesn’t….always looking to learn more about evaluating players

Honestly I want the best Qb to start next year. KC in my mind has the physical skills to be good, but not sure he makes decisions quick enough and has the mental part. Ratliff looked great in preseason last year, but everyone agrees that it was promising but not the same as facing opening day 1st team D’s… Ainge admittedly would be a dark horse, but I’d be interested in seeing what he can do. Biggest thing we can do to hurt the team is to bring in a washed up veteran….. maybe QB in the draft is the best option….

  56. avatar LAJetsFan says:

If we end up going with just the three guys currently on the roster, it’d be great to see AInge come out of nowhere and show what he’s worth. It’s a shame, though, if those rumors are true.

I’m excited, either way, to see who’ll be starting at QB for the Jets. I just wish it were less of a question mark.

  57. avatar Marc says:

Ignoring the Eli comparisons for a second. What about Drew Brees? Everyone thought he was a bust, and he had multiple seasons of playing time to be considered a bust. It is way too early to give up on any of these guys, because they haven’t even been given a fair shot. Let’s not forget that Clemens did not even play a lot in college, so he was an exceptionally raw prospect coming out.

  58. avatar LAJetsFan says:

I think the one thing MOST of us can agree on is this: no veteran quarterback signing! I agree that there’s nobody we can bring in who’ll do any better than what we’ve already got.

  59. avatar Marc says:

I don’t want to bring anyone in, because i want to see what these guys have… I do think that it’s absurd leftwich is still available. The guy was a high draft pick, proved he could win in the league, and is removed from his injury problems.

  60. avatar blee says:

The fact that the coaching staff is evenly split on clemens and ratliff says a lot about clemens.. sadly.. I’m sure the coaching staff isnt just basing this on ratliff’s few preseason snaps..
The fact that Ainge has been mentioned to have a chance is saying something about clemens and ratliff as well..

All 3 are marginally average QBs.. chance to succeed, but not really too much upside..

I like what Sanchez brings.. and his arm is not as weak as everyone is making it out to be.. He’s not chad pennington.. he has at least a Romo arm..

I’d be for getting Mark Sanchez.. accurate on the run, quick release, people saying he’d be top 5 pick next year..

I’d also like a good WR like Maclin if he falls.. maybe Darius Heyward-Bey if he’s there..

  61. avatar Marc says:

The organization could simply be saying they both have a shot to get both guys to work their asses off. Even if they believe that Clemens is the guy over Brett, competition brings out the best in individuals.

  62. avatar Bent says:

    LA Jets fan:

Ratliff is a little more polished, having had the extra year with Pro coaching. Ainge always tended to fall apart a bit when pressured. He was mainly drafted because of his good measurables for his potential, not for how well he played in college, where overall he was a disappointment, as some people expected him to develop into a first or second rounder, although I expect the injuries slowed his development. Technically and in terms of being able to run a pro-style offense, he is a little raw.

On the other hand, Ratty went undrafted because he didn’t have enough of a college resume that teams knew enough about what he could do.

  63. avatar bc says:

Let Clemens,Ratliff & Ainge battle it out in camp. Personally, I don’t think Ainge has a chance only because of his inexperience.

  64. avatar JEFFDOLINI says:

What is the problem with signing a veteran quarterback to the minimum salary and allowing him to fight for the job? It hurts no one. It is a win win for us, either they make the team or they do not and we cut them with practically no money owed. BRING IN A VETERAN TO FIGHT FOR THE JOB! Do not draft Sanchez, trade down and go reciever first then OL and DL.

  65. avatar Steve in Philly says:

Sometimes I feel like Tannenbaum WANTS us to sit around and fight about QBs every year. How many years have we been doing this now? I’ve been posting here for at least 3 years and here we go again- QB drama diorama. We just gotta trust that Rex will fix all this- just as we said we’d trust Mangini to fix it years back after Herm dropped the ball. Sometimes I just wish I was a Steelers fan… lol… sheesh.

IMO a veteran QB will only inhibit the development of either Clemens/Ratliff. One or the other has to get regular season game experience to develop their skills and to gain confidence. Though I do agree that we shouldn’t draft Sanchez.

  67. avatar ED says:

I disagree bc. If Rattie and KC can’t beat out Simms or Huard, they don’t deserve to start.

Clemens won 3 games running for his LIFE! Should have been four if that stiff McCarins didn’t drop a TD pass.

Clemens was victimized by a LOT of drops, too. I guess the receiving corp was use to Pennington creampuffs.

After a year of Favre fastballs, I don’t think Clemens will be plagued by as many drops.

I am a big proponent of the need to find our franchise QB. I don’t think this is somthing that needs to occur this year, however.

Let’s say there are two franchise QB’s in the draft this year in Sanchez and Stafford, and 3-4 Next year in Tebow (I know the negative arguments here), Bradford, Jevan Snead, and Colt McCoy.

I know its fluid – but by division I think the following teams could be in the the market over the next two years.

    AFC West
Mostly all set here – after the Cassell trade. Oakland is a small ? but will likely give Russell a shot.

    AFC North
Only Cleveland might be interested in a QB, but with Quinn / Anderson it probably wouldn’t be a high need.

    AFC South
Houston would likely be in the mix, with a maybe to Jax.

    AFC East –
    Jets, Bills definate need.

So the AFC Summary is Houston, Jets, Bills this is a need position, with possibles to Cle and Jax.

In the NFC there is a bit more need.

NFC North, the Bears, Detroit and Vikings are in the market.

NFC South, Panthers, and Tampa are in the Market

NFC East – Only Washington is a possibility.

NFC West – All 4 teams will likely be looking for a QB – 2 as backups and longer term replacements (AZ, Seattle) and 2 definate needs.

That totals around Ten QB needs for the NFC.

So given this, Where do we think we will finish this year relative to the teams who don’t take a QB this year in the draft?

I think we should be thinking about a QB in the 2010 draft, and – frankly, if Brett or Kellen doesn’t stand out in 09, there should be ample talent in the draft (and given a poor year from the QB, we will likely be in a decent position to snatch up one of the top 2 in 2010 Draft.

    Thoughts?

  70. Im a jet fan since 80s, Im very disappointed with the jets, I suffered a lot, if the jes go with clemens am out of the jets forever, we have to bring to our team mens like, cassel, warner, or brady queen, please bring a good querte bac and then raliff its gonna be the future, I dont like clemens, or in the last case bring cutler, we need a victory dreams, or birng back pennington, pennington its better than clemens, sell clemens and thats it

  71. we lost cassel, cassel wil be the future in the nfl, I think the next year we are gonna hve a good defense and a bad qb, cme on clemes our qb???, no no no, please

Cassel is not a great quarterback he was just on a pro team. KC played with a terrible team when he played his 8 games. He had little protection and not much to throw to. We have a much better squad right now, with our intense O-line. If we focus on a WR in the draft, hopefully getting Hakeem Nicks, KC will actually have a team to work with. Someone like Nicks works well because he can catch inside, and then there is Clowney and Cotchery to try and get open deep. To say that KC being QB is something to promote you to no longer like the Jets is fairly ridiculous.

I strongly believe everything Clemens has gone through begining with his collegic leg injury, taking over from CP a lack luster offense with an O-line resembling swiss cheese, to backing up our Favorite Farve has groomed him for this momment, he talented, smart, of extremly high charicter, and I think now relizes this is it, his time is now, and I think he will capitalize in a way that will put a smile on all who bleed green and white. Kudos to him for his perserverience. I forsee him becoming a solid, smart, starter. He may not become one of the leagues elite, but with the way our D is coming together, I don’t think he will have to be.

If that brick handed dope JMcC could catch a ball, he would have been 4-4 as a start.
