Edgerton Hartwell to the Jets?
Take it as hearsay, but I’ve been told that that former Ravens & Raiders Linebacker Edgerton Hartwell might be signed by the Jets.
As far as football, Hartwell is a solid run-blocker and a smart player, but what he isn’t is fast and he’s struggled with injuries throughout his career. This likely makes him a rotational backup to fill in for the Jets inside, especially in goal line / running plays.
When you are a writer, they say “start with what you know.” If this rumor about Hartwell is true, then just like most coaches in the league, the new coaches are starting with what they know on defense, which is fine by me. The difference of Hartwell or Brad Kassell doesn’t mean a lot to me.
From remembering by weekly dose of E!’s The Soup, I remember that Hartwell (who’s wife is on Real Housewives of Atlanta) also enjoys wearing speedos and beading with his wife and her friends.

Good training camp player
Better than Kassell, four years in the Raven system, where he excelled, can be a teacher.Gets the big contract then gets hurt, bounced around, Oakland cut him last year in Training Camp, if he’s healthy he will be a contributor…
Perhaps a nice, cheap Barton replacement… Why not?
Matt C, we already have an EXPENSIVE Barton replacement, named Bart Scott, Hartwell would be battling with Kenwin Cummings and Jason Trusnick and the like for a backup spot
Who?
HE’S A LB OR TE?
Didnt we just let him go…….except his name was Eric Barton??
C’mon now….Another slow footed run stopper? No thank you!!
HE’S A JO…lol
Stupid question, but Edgerton Hartwell is the same person as Ed Hartwell right? The LB that started for the Ravens a couple years back?
this might work out. if he can play inside AND outside.
Sec 108- any defense needs depth- Didn’t Harris go down for a while last year with a decent injury? I see no problem adding an experienced, veteran backup. Worst case scenario he gets cut and everyone moves on
Matt C,
I have no problem with depth, just that when you said a replacement for Barton, who WAS a starter I thought you had bigger plans for him.
If Ryan knows the guy and wants him, that is OK with me. I would venture to say that REX knows a bit more then any of us do about the player.
It’s always good to have a solid run blocking linebacker on the squad.
To me, there is just no such thing as too much depth, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Other than the obvious need at wide reciever and no proven quarterback, what has me most concerned about the ‘09 season is lack of depth at LB and the defensive line. Is another slow footed linebacker (Eric Barton 2.0) what this team absolutely needs? No, not necessarily- But with no David Bowens, and total unprovens at back-up, I say stock-pile whatever we can at LB and D-line

I wonder if Bent ever tasted that dish on http://www.eonline.com/on/shows/thesoup/. It’s British, Isn’t it?
There is no risk witht this move why all the negativity? This is a calculated move for the Jets. Hartwell will play cheap just to get on a roster, he knows Rex’s style of play, and wont be asked to do anything except spell Scott or DH in certain packages. If he can still play a little he can be a valuable bridge gap to our younger LB’s and if he sucks then we just cut him. Id rather have an older Ed Hartwell then watch Cody Spencer (Mangini guy) get pancaked or chase a RB around like an idiot

Spotted dick is kind of outdated over here. They used to serve it as a desert in schools, but it kind of got phased out in the eighties.
Not really my bag, I’m afraid, although the comedic value of its name is not lost on me.
Not sure how it’s relevant to Hartwell or any other comments to this post, but hey.
Bent:
Thanks for the warning. I’m also lost on how it’s connected to Hartwell.
